The Gate Islington
Lovely restaurant and the food is delicious.
Wonderful vegetarian restaurant with great choices for us vegans. Very pleasant ambiance; a real fire was lit, very nice. Great food and drinks. Chilli margarita was top notch. Wish I lived nearer to this great restaurant; I’d be here every week
It was our second outing to a vegetarian restaurant so slightly dubious. There was no need. Great food at a reasonable price service great, staff attentive without being intrusive, hubby loved it and he is hard to please. I have already recommended to a friend.
Amazing place. Great food. Fabulous staff. Have just completed my 20th trip.
One of the best for vegans in the UK and my meat eating partner gave the thumbs up too
A firm favourite vegetarian restaurant a few mins from Sadlers Wells theatre and Angel tube station. They need a change of menu as I have had the same meal 3 times now! Pity they don’t take opentable d8ning cheques.
Service was OK. Could have offered more bread with the terrine.
Food is good as usual.
Great to have a real veggie restaurant very near to Sadlers Wells theatre and Angel tube station. Allow an hour for 2 courses if you are going to the theatre and always book first as it gets busy. The aubergine schnitzels are always yummy! Portions are generous. It does get noisy when it is full. Looks are downstairs so could be a problem for disabled folk?
Greater with a smile , very buzzy as it was Mother’s Day. Lovely cocktails, food was so tasty and presented so beautifully.
Exquisite food, good menu. Service was good. Ambience was great but not amazing but overall the food is amazing which is the main thing.
One of the best meals we had in London. I’m a vegan and my daughter is not, and we both had an amazing meal! My favorite was the mushroom Wellington! Oh my goodness! I recommend to go a few times to try it all. Unfortunately, I live across the sea or I’d be back as much as possible! Highly recommend this adorable and delicious place!
Excellent food with flavours that melded well with one another (the chaat and the plantain starters and the red Thai curry are particular favourites). The only trouble was the non alcoholic drinks options seemed to run out early on so please stack up on them! The food would have gone down well with elderflower :)
Beautiful place, Food was great, staff professional.
We had good time.
Hi, We're glad to hear that you enjoyed your food and service. We hope you are able to join us in the near future :)
Met my vegan friend here for a midweek dinner. We thought it was a vegetarian restaurant so were pleasantly surprised when we discovered The Gate was doing ‘Veganuary’ and every dish on the menu was vegan. The food was absolutely delicious and we wanted to try everything! The atmosphere and service were also both excellent. I have already booked to go back here and have been recommending it to all my friends!
Thank you so much! We're delighted to hear you had a great experience at The Gate Islington and look forward to seeing you again soon!
I love to eat at this restaurant. On this occasion the food was great but quite a few dishes were no longer available on the menu. Arrived late so not much time before the restaurant stopped serving.
Hi Chris, Thank you for your review. Glad to know that you love to eat at our restaurant. It will be great if you can visit us a bit earlier next time to really have time to enjoy your meal :)
Unfortunately after I had made this booking through the OpenTable app and received an email confirmation, I was called by The Gate Islington and told that in fact no table was available, which was disappointing and meant I had to find another restaurant with availability.
We were visiting Sadlers Wells and wouldn’t eat anywhere else.
Fabulous vegan menu. Our party of four, none of us vegan, but aspire to be, was delighted with the choice and found all the food delicious. The aubergine parmigiana a triumph.
Service was a little slow, not very welcoming and seemed rather chaotic on our arrival at 12:00 Sunday. Fortunately the standard of the food made up for this.
Waiter was new And was clueless about the menu! Carafe of wine was brought to the table without glasses, after asking three times they were eventually brought over. Two of the four main courses were lukewarm and had to be returned, when they came back the other two had finished their meals.
The Gate is definitely somewhere I will be visiting again. The service was fantastic, despite them being very busy, and the place itself is lovely. The food is wonderful, amazing portions, so much variety, but I will definitely remember to ask for no coriander next time!
Excellent food as always and a very considerate waiter - I was dining alone and he made sure I was well looked after.
We were really excited to try the Gate based on a friend’s recommendation. Whilst the food was beautifully presented, the taste did not deliver. The food was quite heavy and the tastes were not as refined as we had hoped.
Great food, good service! Bit chilly at times as we were sat next to the door but otherwise no complaints and would recommend!
This was my second visit to this restaurant. My first experience was wonderful from food, to service. However, my subsequent visit was disappointing. I had booked for 3 people but my husband was unable to come. I arrived at the restaurant and was seated. After being seated , I explained that there will only be the two of us. After about 10 minutes, the waiter asked if I wouldn’t mind moving to another table to enable her to join two tables together, to seat a larger group. Of course, I agreed and has happy to move. Having them sat me down at a table of her choosing, she comes back to ask me if I could move again for the same reason. I explained that this was inappropriate, unprofessional and embarrassing and that I was not going to move. At this point, I’m still waiting for my friend to arrive. Following on, my friend arrived. As we proceeded to order, most of the items we had hopped to chose from the set menu had finished. I appreciate it was a Sunday and it appeared to be a very popular restaurant. The food did look delicious. However, you would expect a restaurant to give you advance warning before sitting down to allow you to consider an alternative restaurant. I should also point out, that was no discussion or recognition of the poor experience when we paid the bill. Just not acceptable!
Great food and service as always
If you like proper veggie food, then this is the place to go in North London...and only a couple of minutes away from Sadler’s Wells theatre. Best to book as it gets very busy pre theatre time. Aubergine schnitzel is delicious.
Booked for pre-theatre meal and wanted to experiment with a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. We were not disappointed. The menu was innovative and tasty. I was truly delighted.
Disappointed as noisy and had to send food back to be heated up. Bathrooms were not very clean and flies so don’t think I will return which is a shame.
We pre-booked before going to Sadlers Wells matineeand have eaten here previously. This day was unbelievable...completely understaffed with nearly a full house and everyone waiting for food and people arriving and being turned away even though there was space. It was chaotic with no obvious manager around. In the end we gave up and left to go somewhere else. It’s a Shame because we know the food is good but service/management on this day s complete disaster.
Very disappointed with the meal. The food we ordered was not exciting as the dishes did not live up to description and not executed very well. It was definitely overpriced for what we were served.
To add to this, the service was incredibly slow.
It is also surprising that the restaurant markets itself as a vegetarian one, and yet (mostly) all of the food is in fact vegan. The choices were therefore a lot more limiting then what you'd expect.
There are many more vegetarian and vegan restaurants in London which offer much more exciting food and definitely better value for money.
everything about THE GATE is good. Pleasant staff, delicious food, nice relaxed feeling to the whole dining experience.
Two carnivores, two vegetarians, four happy diners. I'm one of the carnivores but the Pad Thai was bursting with so much freshness and flavour that the addition of chicken or prawn would have been an irrelevance. The pea sauce with the arancini was excellent, my wife and one of our friends both declared their Thai Red Curry to be excellent. It does get very noisy when it's buzzing so may not be ideal for a quiet, intimate dinner. But if you want vegetarian cooking that makes you forget you're eating vegetarian the Gate is the place to go.
All The Gate restaurants have very good vegetarian food. The food I enjoyed, but there is a problem with the venue. It is very noisy, and this is attributable to (1) the non-dampening type surface/walls, and (2) the fact that the staff operates in a manner impervious to the noise they are creating. Someone taking away the dirty dishes was busy clanging/bangin them without reserve. Someone at the counter seemed to be cleaning a filter, and banging this loudly against a metal basin. NB: a few times during our dinner we could barely hear each other around the same table. Nice food, but this is certainly the last time I venture into this restaurant.
Gourmet and vegetarian are two words which are rarely seen together, but they are here! The food is high-end vegetarian and absolutely delicious, even for a carnivore such as I.
Service was friendly but it was often difficult to attract the waiters' attentions, not because they were busy but because they seemed so relaxed and laid back. But that was a minor issue and I would definitely return to this restaurant, and to their Hammersmith branch where I have dined previously.
While its great to have an extensive vegetarian menu and the food was nice enough, it lacked subtlety or interest. For the price the standard of cooking needs to be much higher. The hard surfaces make it very noisy even when only half full. I remember when it opened and it was smart - its quite tatty in places. The waiter and the service was excellent as was the bread.
Overall a great night, and the food was fantastic, but we got the sense that they were up against it, as the service was very slow and quite random at times. For instance, it was quite a hot evening and we hadn’t been asked if we wanted anything to drink for at least the first twenty minutes. People around us were also asking if they could order food. We would go again though hopefully the service will be better next time.
The prices were high, so I'd expect at least very good food, but it was average at best. There were very few waiters, so slow and unattentive service. The place was also extremely noise with plates being banged against each other when being collected from the bar for the kitchen, and there was even shouting among the staff. I'd definitely not recomend, was a poor experience overall.
This place is absolutely amazing!!!! The food was delicious, the service was excellent and it’s in a great location. Will definitely go again.
Ideal venue for pre theatre at Sadler's Wells, especially if you or one of your party is a vegetarian. Rather oddly we were told that having the set menu without a desert was not possible, which is weird given that the dishes on the set menu are also on the a la carte. Generous portions certainly don't leave you hungry.
I've eaten here a number of times and have always had a good experience.
