Ideal venue for pre theatre at Sadler's Wells, especially if you or one of your party is a vegetarian. Rather oddly we were told that having the set menu without a desert was not possible, which is weird given that the dishes on the set menu are also on the a la carte. Generous portions certainly don't leave you hungry.
I've eaten here a number of times and have always had a good experience.
Small and compact restaurant that serves delicious vegetarian food. I am not a vegetarian but love eating here as food wonderful.
Food is always interesting and great quality, but you need to be patient as it takes a while to arrive. New lunchtime menu is a good idea.
Great service. Delicious food.
Excellent vegetarian food showing that you can drop meat and dairy without dropping taste or quality! We need more places like this to show people that vege and vegan food is not a step down. Would recommend anyone to go, but it is quite pricey - so save it for a special occasion!
Creative and tasty vegetarian dishes, and wonderful service from engaging staff. Great value for money.
warm welcome and great service added to the delicious range of vegetarian food on offer: each dish was distinct (so many previous vegetation venues have had a sort of 'generic' base to differently named dishes) and worth ordering again. good wine list and an eagerness to help made everything flow smoothly. would definitely recommend
Great location for pre theatre dinner. Food was very good if a little on the dear side but that's not uncommon for good quality veggie /vegan diners. Service was friendly and efficient and apart from having a draughty at my back it was a very nice evening.
Best veggie meal I had all month, made me actually contemplate permanent vegetarianism. Tacos were great!
Very interesting menu with an impressive array of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Awfully slow service.
Nice experience & setting. I've been here 4 times over the last few years. The food is good, and its a lovely place to dine, staff are nice enough, but sadly the food and all up exeperience is moderate to good, rather than great, which I know it has the potential to be.
We were a large party and they looked after us really well. Will definitely put on my list of good places to go in Islington.
Been here before so knew what to expect. Unfair to pick out any one employee, however, Miguel from Portugal was our server for the meal, he didn't put a foot wrong. Try for a table at the back, up the steps. On a Friday evening people were having to be turned away it was full !
Lovely meal as usual but what we have noticed is that there used to be a lunchtime menu with options under £10 but all the lunch options are much more expensive. We now plan to look for a different venue for our lunchtime work get together.
Very disappointed with the experience. The food was very average and the service not brilliant either. Far too expensive for what you get.
Miso aubergine starter divine , followed by hot spicy thai curry fortunately light on tofu(i'm a solid carnivore) but delicious combination of mushrooms and okra. Beautifully presented. we should have stopped there the desserts though again very nicely presented didn't match up to the superb flavour of the starters and main. Great pre ballet restaurant being so close to Sadlers Wells though the very relaxed service had me fretting for time, albeit needlessly. Thoroughly recommend and will return without doubt. thanks
This place is one of my favourite places to eat and spend a great time with people. I came here in new years eve and everything from the service and food was absolutely perfect.
Would love to come back more often this year because I'm never disappointed.
We enjoyed our evening at The Gate. Fabulous to have creative vegetarian dishes to choose from with most of the mains also being vegan. The starters were a bit pricey although delicious. Staff were great particularly as we asked to move from near the main door as it was cold and a little breezy so bear that in mind when booking! One little gripe was a waiter clearing the food off plates whilst still at the table and piling them precariously and leaving them!
The ambience is a bit so so - it’s a big space and rather dimly lit. Could do with a bit of thought as to how to make it all a bit more inviting.
Definitely worth a visit.
Food is wonderful- good size portions, well seasoned, and, as you might expect, packed full of veg!
Where the gate falls down is on service- it's not rude exactly, we were just not made to feel *that* special. When we arrived they tried to seat us next to the door in an empty restaurant, service was short with us/really quite slow and the waiter at the end was rather pushy for an additional tip considering service charge is included on the receipt...
Still, wonderfully close to sadlers wells if you're going to see the ballet and a great menu!
We had a delicious set of starters and one of the mains was exceptional/ the Roloto— the other just very good — mushroom risotto a bit too heavy on the mushroom and in need of a complimentary flavour. The service left a bit to be desired — hard to get waiter’s attention, also he at one point delivered with a flourish two Christmas Crackers for fun — which was delightful — but then about 30 seconds later took them back saying “you did not order from the right festive menu to get these”. Given crackers cost about 20p each I was surprised he would create such a disappointment for us. He saw our reactions and returned with one cracker for us to split but it really took the festive mood out of the air. Later he brought us the wrong bill and then returned to say without apology (almost accusingly) “this is not your bill!). Odd. Advice— please advise your wait staff to be a bit more liberal with the customer centric focus (especially given the level of restaurant this is).
Lunch so lovely and quiet. Food as delicious as always. Creative and beautifully presented vegetarian food.
Good food but very loud and painfully slow service. The staff are quite friendly. Just bring ear plugs and try to get here about an hour before you think you might be hungry.
Lovely food, great service, more than accommodating for the baby at our table 😊
What a fabulous lunch we all had with great service and attentive waitstaff. Seriously good selection and delicious imaginative combinations. The sharing platter was a good call between the 3 of us and delighted that they included the mizo glazed aubergine. Again the Aubergine Schnitzel was one of our favourite on the mains and the chunky herb polenta chips were so crisp and such a treat. No hesitation in recommending this restaurant and looking forward to our next visit.
I really wanted to love this place. My partner is vegetarian and I am eating less and less animal products.
Unfortunately the food was below average. Unimaginative and boring. My starter was cold, which came as a surprise. I am not a great cook but I could've easily cooked any of that myself. Add to that the cost of £88 for two starters, two main courses and a caraffe of wine. Not going back.
Took my dad, we're both vegetarian. He was blown away with the choice and the food. He said it's the best restaurant he's ever been to.
We went for 2 course lunch. Really tasty Roasted Vegetable Wellington with all the trimmings and my friend loved her Sweet Potato and Chickpea Burger. The desserts of Chocolate Brownie and Coffee and Hazelnut Cheese Cake were divine.. Shame we didn't have enough room to finish it all! Fab place, definitely will go again!
This is a great place for vegetarians, who get a proper menu to choose from, with interesting and different dishes, instead of just one or two items added in as an afterthought.
i found the food good, but nothing special. The miso glazed auberfine was fine, the Wild mushroom risotto cake no. Risotto was not well cooked and didn't survive the pan fried treatment
Nice place - very good food, just it was unbearably hot in there - we should have said something as staff were otherwise very attentive. Just lacked a bit of a London atmosphere to me - could have done with a bit more of an earthy, maybe ethnic feel?
absolutely gorgeous food.
Really nice atmosphere and good service. Food was tasty. Prices are very reasonable.
Lovely place and lovely menu. As a non vegetarian, this works for me and my veggie partner.
The overall service was initially very rushed and then non existant. Dessert needed to be canceled as it took so long.
Starters are immensely overpriced for what they are. Mains were the right portion size but again overpriced.
It was worth a shot but cannot see a return visit
Overpriced with relatively small portion sizes. Food quality still OK. The restaurant itself lacks character and the waitress did not want to accommodate comfy seats despite the fact we asked for it due to me being 8 months pregnant.
With so many options to choose from, this place was vegetarian heaven. The main course was delicious as was the dessert. Service was acceptable but sometimes a bit abrupt and we had to flag down the waiter a few times to try to order.
Fabulous as always. Took an American friend and she was blown away by the quality of the food. The food looked stunning and was extremely tasty. Every dish on the menu appeals so it is quite hard to choose. But the Mediterranean tart and mushroom risotto cake were excellent.
Good place, good service, reasonable prices, good location.
Maybe they were short-staffed ? There was a table laid out for a very big party of 30 or more ....maybe the waiters were overstretched. A member of staff was very apologetic and pleasant when, in answer to his query, we said the service had been a bit slow. I had had to actively attract a waiter's attention several times. The food was less good than on a previous visit. A dessert of a smallish slice of basil and strawberry tart seemed rather excessively strongly flavoured with basil, was unaccompanied by any form of cream, and seemed overpriced...I think it was £8, though my memory may not be accurate on that and the online menu doesn't seem to include desserts, so I could not check. Overall it was a mediocre experience.
