About

The Gay Hussar can be said, without a shadow of a doubt, to be one of London’s most famous restaurants. A long time haunt of top politicos and media types – well, it is in the centre of swinging Soho after all – this fine restaurant has been flying the Hungarian flag over the English capital for more than fifty years now. Cosy and comfortable but certainly not without elegance, The Gay Hussar’s dining room is anything but generic with higgledy piggledy rows of books lining the room and endless caricatures of notorious public figures fuelling thousands of conversations. An interesting range of authentic Hungarian dishes and matching Hungarian wines complete this unusual experience.

Interesting menu of Hungarian dishes, very traditional vibe and service was a bit limited but worth trying if you want something different.

A delightful experience, and a privilege to see Martin Rowson's many sketches. How sad the restaurant is closing.

Went out for a celebration with my missus on a Saturday evening.
Good location in the central, easy to access from anywhere.
The design is a bit behind but still solid.
Very friendly staff, professional service.
The food was really delicious and authentic Hungarian.
I can only highly recommend the place.

Great place! As a Hungarian I can say that the food is great quality and completely authentic- as close as it can get to my grandmas cooking! Strongly recommend. Was very positively surprised!

It's a great restaurant: food and staff are just perfect.
Goulash is a real treat.
Don't try any dessert....if you don't want to be addicted

Had another lovely meal at the Gay Hussar, great fun - the owner is such a character and all the food and wine was lovely. Great little place and makes a change to have something so different.

Very poor service, average food, manager made a bizarre and offensive comment to one of our party during a friendly conversation just after we arrived. Used to really like the food and atmosphere here but will be unlikely to go back.

I am very familiar with Hungarian food and this restaurant falls very short of the mark. Nothing that we ordered even resembled Hungarian cuisine and barely qualified as acceptable for institutional food. But actually the service was worse than the food..Our server -not Hungarian-really could not speak English and he was the only server! Such a disappointment,

I enjoyed the ambiance and historical context although no politicians plotting coups sadly. I was surprised not to be given the pre theatre menu given we arrived at 6 and found the staff less than enthusiastic .

Fantastic food and a great choice of Hungarian wines. Very friendly service. Fabulous decor and setting - a real gem within the busy world of Soho. Would recommend a table away from the door as it's a bit draughty. Has an old gentleman's feel to it with lots of great Labour party caricatures on the walls.

The key to a restaurant surviving is certainty by returning customers that they will get what they want. I have been going to Gay Hussar regularly since at least the 1980s, possibly longer, I'm too old to remember. Enough said?
Actually no. If it is your first time, leave enough room for the cheese pancakes.

My parents have been wanting to come to The Gay Hussar since theyoved to London 6 months ago. We finally made a reservation and we are all glad we did. Everyone's food was outstanding. I had the chicken pancake and the serving size was generous, and the food was delicious. The staff are all friendly and funny. Definitely give it a try.

We were a bit disappointed with our evening to be honest. They offered us a table with obviously dirty seats, and then, after we were found another, brought us a wrong starter. The food was ok-ish....it’s comforting and filling but you don’t come here for subtlety! Service was ok, but overall no need to return given the many other places in London.

A real genuine London gem. Frequented by the political and media elites for decades. The interior is testament to its heritage. One of my favourite restaurants.

I'd long intended to visit this famous eatery, and I was not disappointed. We met for lunch, pre-theatre and the service was excellent. It has a lively atmosphere and the walls are covered with cartoons of politicians and media people who have dined there.
The Hungarian menu was extensive and the food brought quickly. Other diners were also very friendly.

Another fab meal at The Gay Hussar. Only downside was we were a group of 7 and were seated upstairs instead of in the main dining area downstairs. There was no one else eating up there. The food and service was however fantastic. We had a variety of dishes and everyone was happy with their sections. I had the fish terrine and the venison stew which were delicious. We will return but next time I will want ot make sure we are seated downstairs .

What a find. The genuine article, with authentic Hungarian dishes with all the flavours you would want to find. The Brassoi Ermek is to die for!! Fantastic service. Quick throughput. ideal for that pre-theatre dinner. Don't forget to round it off with the unique taste of Tokay wine with your dessert. Definitely one to remember and put in the faves list.

My Son had been there and as it was my birthday and we were spending the day in London he recommended it. I would visit it again and have no problem recommending it to tourists and they should have it on their list of possible restaurants to eat in London. Look forward to another meal there.

Unusual decor although a little tired looking. Food was nice, staff explained some of the dishes. The Bulls Blood red wine was lovely. If you want one of the deals remember to specifically book it. There's quite a few so I thought I'd wait til we got there so my friend could choose, but apparently you can't use any of the deals unless you've said online which one you want. Bit odd since I had actually booked ahead.
