The George In Rye
There were quite a few communication issues resulting in all our food arriving at the same time/extra food etc. The food was generally under seasoned. The 'tempura' was really just like ordinary batter plus the sizing of the items battered was too big.
Service is included however when we enquired as to whether this actually gets to the staff we were not confident it would but it was too late to remove it from the bill and leave cash as the table had been closed on the system.
The whole thing was a bit sloppy and felt like like a return to the previous century.
I love this place, the food is consistently good and service is great!
Service was slow, not all dishes came up together one dish arrived 15mins after all the others. The greens were floating in water and had not been drained correctly?
Overall a very poor lunch although very costly. Sheppard pie was £20 and only enough for a starter portion
Fabulous lunch, great service
Food was tasty, service good and reasonably priced.
My son said it was the best steak that he had eaten for a long time, if not the best ever tasted in fact !! When it gets busy they seem to run out of lobster, the squid and the scallops were a good alternative and the large gambas looked very appetising. Quite lively at lunchtime as it was a bank holiday, when busy, it is difficult to hear conversation.
We were a group of four: my husband and I, 34 year old daughter, 92 year old mother all fish lovers and we were not disappointed- oysters just outstanding for freshness, scallops delicious, hot lobster salad sublime, fish and chips and and mussels very good. What we hadn't expected were desserts of such amazing quality- the rhubarb pannacotta was out of this world
Food was good, scallops especially delicious! The staff were brilliant, we had several young children with us and the staff were patient and made sure we were well looked after.
Reasonable food, but not exciting. Excellent service.
Service was brusque. Not good value for money.Hoof down the high street was much better.
Unfortunately the gin and tonic had no gin but the waitress did apologise and rectified it
We didn’t think the food was of the standard expected of the establishment and having eaten last night at the Landgate Bistro the food and ambience was far superior for a similar cost
Sorry to say we can’t recommend The George
Lovely restaurant overall but the service on this visit was very slow and almost non existent. Food was ok but no fresh fish and the lobster was out of season
Lovely food, really nice staff and plenty of them, always there if you needed anything. Very pleasant meal.
The lovely staff make this restaurant the very best. They are helpful, friendly and professional. So rare these days...
Food was the best, as was the wine.
The lovely young lady who served us knew all about the menu and was able to answer our questions fully.
Will go again!!
I had the lobster and it was delightful and the service was excellent
Lovely selection of food and drinks. Warm and attentive staff. A super place to enjoy a delicious meal.
Very limited menu for dinner ,there was very little that I could eat .No bread served unless asked for and obviously paid for My warm lobster salad was stone cold . It was reheated up and was slightly more pallitable .Breakfast was slightly better, but the bacon served was streaky , which I would never serve. Service was good at both dinner and breakfast .
Great food, fabulous serice. Would definitely go back.
First visit to The George and we were not disappointed. Hotel is tasteful and has a nice relaxing vibe and is obviously very popular.
Meal was to celebrate my husbands birthday and we all enjoyed our food.
They surprised him with some banoffee tarts which was a lovely touch.
Breakfast in the morning was good too. Can’t wait to go again.
We enjoyed our meal at The George. Lucy took great care of us and made sure all was as it should be. The food was lovely and full of flavour. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Just what we needed after a day exploring.
Breakfast was amazing
Had the big hamburger for supper which looked amazing but underneath was burnt quite badly,
Lovely ambience but the squid starter was cold, the bread accompanying the potted shrimp wasn’t charred but burnt and the salmon main was lacklustre. The steak wasn’t worth the money.
Lovely staff and love the atmosphere but very underwhelming food.
Good food and wine at reasonable prices. Pleasant service.
Superb tasting menu for the Scallop festival. Six courses with matched wine for £75 might sound like rather a lot, but the dishes were interesting, delicious and matched with equally interesting and delicious wines. We will be back in October for the Wild Boar festival!
A little more flexibility shouldn't be difficult and would go a long way. We went during Rye Scallop Week, and asked for the 4 course option from the Scallop Week tasting menu. Were then told that this would oblige us having the oysters (which we didn't want) and would exclude two of the other dishes on the menu (which we did want.) All apparently in the name of "getting our quantities right in the kitchen." So we went a la carte instead, with 2 scallopy dishes. Ceviche very nicely done. Belly pork with scallops was tough and chewy and was heavily dominated by the pernod jus. Then a waiter came and poured the rest of our (generous) wine decanters into our glasses unbidden - DON'T do that please!
Unlikely to return, certainly not for next year's Scallop Week as there is so much choice in town.
Lovely meal, so very well prepared and presented. Don't really know if I needed a special 'risotto spoon,' so maybe a little too too fussy, but friendly service and nice menu options.
Great service. Enjoyable experience
Food was delicious, Prosecco was superb and the service was second to none, especially the french waiter... so attentive but not over bearing. You didn’t even realise your glass had been refilled. Excellent
Whole meal spoilt spoilt by chatter from open kitchen including profanities. I did give this feedback to the waiting staff on leaving.
There is a good selection on the menu and the dining room is reasonably well laid out for a meal for two, you are not sitting too close to the next table. The only problem in Rye is finding a convenient car park when you go to the George.
Not up to usual standard. Slow service and really poor starters, the squid being over cooked rubber and the batter sliding off as they were too soggy
Lovely meal, really helpful especially with food choices and options for my pregnant wife
We booked this restaurant for the lobster. We were given the menu whilst waiting for our table and decided on lobster. Waited 30mins to order, only to be told they didn't have lobster! Very disappointed and spoilt our overall expectations & excitement. However, restaurant gave us free squid starter by way of apologies, and alternative options were delicious. Very good quality.
Met here for midweek lunch with our friends. It was quiet but that was ideal for us all to catch up 😊. Food was delicious- 2 of us had the scallops, one had salmon and one the steak, all enjoyed our choices. 3 of us had desserts - one had crumble, one the rich chocolate dish & one had ice cream. I could only manage a coffee. I would recommend this charming Rye hotel/restaurant/bar as a great place to eat & drink. The Chilean Sauvignon Blanc was excellent too.
had a lovely night at the George with my wife, we ate at the Grill restaurant which served very delicious food.
It's a great place to treat yourself and Rye is an interesting place to wander around too.
We will definitely be back.
The menu lacks vegan and gluten free options together - there aren't any offers to amend the meals either. Many people these days are finding out that eathing both is not good for the gut. Just a thought. Note, I only come to the George as my Father likes it otherwise I'd go elsewhere with better options.
great good as always
Our second visit to the George, another special occasion my husband's 60th Birthday.Every thing about visit was perfect ,excellent delicious food well presented, atmosphere amazing, and staff too class.Thank you looking forward to our next celebration.
After drinking and eating in the bar areaon several occasions this was our first visit to the restaurant.
The meal was fabulous, the table was very couple friendly the staff were suitably attentive with no feeling of being rushed out of the door despite it being after 10pm. Indeed paying the bill was the only time we couldn’t get a swift response!
The Chateaubriand steak to share was exceptional and both the muscles and the scallops starters we’re equally high quality. The lighter Pinot noir worked for both starter and main course alike.
Calculating the value we figured we could buy and cook for £75+ so paying £120+ seemed very good value.
Enjoyable evening meal, very good service and good atmosphere.
