The George Inn
Food was excellent service bit slow had to go to bar to get someone to take our order
Very lovely evening and will return again.
Friendly staff food was superb and the atmosphere was just relaxed and jolly
Thank you and will return again
The food was amazing here and that’s what would make us come back. Unfortunately the experience was ruined by a rude waiter who was quick to rush us out and did not look after us properly at all. We had to wait 45 minutes for our food to come out. Poor choices on the dessert menu. But the food was excellent!
Always a lovely meal here. Repeat customer again and again!
We had a lovely meal and the staff were friendly and helpful. We have been to The George several times now and have never been disappointed.
Fish was frozen and mushy and the salad was swimming with oil.
Food was very nice. Staff were friendly but service was a bit slow.
We come to the george every year on our anniversary and it's always lovely. This year was different, nearly an hour waiting for three portions of chips and two sandwiches. When the food eventually arrived the chips were fries not chips which I wouldn't mind except it was £3.50 per portion and you could get the same amount on the 99p menu at MacDonalds. Hubby ordered BLT and got a club Sandwhich which was over £8. It's changed completely. I didn't order any food for my daughter as I refuse to pay £6.26 for a children's meal. She is only two and there were no other options. Sorry The George, we loved you once but after having a not great meal last year aswell we won't be back.
Staff were exceptional. Due to a family crisis I had to ask restaurant to hold my table for over an hour, which, they did without hesitation. Staff were attentive and friendly. Food was delicious and piping hot. I had never visited the George before, it was a last minute choice before visiting The Festival of Lights at Longleat, but, I would definitely visit again. Thank you George Inn for a very pleasurable dining experience, hope to see you soon.
Food was mediocre and expensive. Lukewarm starters, main acceptable.
It was the first time that we had been to the George and found it very friendly and cosy. The food was good but we would have liked a bigger selection of sweet. The décor could have been more Christmassy but the atmosphere was good. The staff were very friendly and our waitress was lovely. We would definitely be going again maybe to try the Sunday menu. All in all very good.
Food very good as usual and arrived piping hot. Good to have a local pub with classic dishes well cooked and excellent prices. Lovely desserts, too!
I realise that you had a big party going on but that should not mean ignoring your ordinary diners which is how we felt. The food was great but having to go and find staff THREE times to get service during our meal was appalling. You asked !!
Spent the night in the Hotel side and evening meal, very nice, good quality with friendly staff.
Service was really slow, food was burnt and not what we ordered. Ordered a pie and was told it would have no top on it which was fine but came as a stew with bumplins? I have been to the pub a few times and this was an awful experience.
Lovely location and rooms, dinner would have been lovely except for the extremely slow service
Very welcoming, happy to accommodate special dietary requirements. Good food and service.
Avoid the room at the North end of the building as the fire fills the room with smoke unless the windows are open, so you have to put up with cold draughts and traffic noise from the A350. When this happened, we were offered a different table elsewhere in the building, and luckily there was a table available.
We always have the Steak, Ale and Mushroom Pie. It's better than homemade!
The George Inn still has a pub atmosphere as opposed to a restaurant, which we prefer.
The George is a great pub and one we always stop to eat in on the way home from Longleats. The famous steak and ale pie is simply a winner. I have it every time now! Great draught ales too for those not driving!
A great place to meet up with old friends and enjoy a delicious meal in pleasant surroundings.
We stayed at the George Inn for 3 nights and used the restaurant for the three evenings. We found the food very good and staff helpful. We would use again if we were in the area.
Adult meal was good but lacked any vegetables. Children’s food was very over cooked almost burnt. We were charged £2 for a tablespoon of baked beans that were missing from a child’s plate.
Warm and well decorated pub. Very inattentive staff. Will not be returning.
Menu choices were very limited on Sunday evening with three attempts to find a meal that was available in the kitchen.
The food was nicely cooked but lacking in veg
Lovely food and great location. Only knocked a star off as we had to ask for our bill 3 times. Will be back though.
The food was very good and portions generous. We booked earlier than last time and service was quicker. Servers were friendly and helpful.
Great food, excellent service. Very good value. Highly recommend.
We greatly enjoyed our lunch. The food was very good and the staff could not have been more helpful.
we stayed over at the George inn, and also ate there that evening. The menu was varied, and we all found something we liked.
The portions were excellent, even thou i ordered a small portion i still had trouble eating it all. We didn't need to see a dessert menu as we were all too full.
Highly recommended for food and their accomodation
We decided to visit based on the menu looking as though the chef knew how to cook. Unfortunatly this wasn't the case & the food really let it down. The venue itself is lovely & has riverside seating. Had we gone for the garden menu (burgers etc) then it may have been different but we chose to sit inside & order from this menu.
My partner had a vegetarian aubergine dish which had been plonked on a plate swimming in a tin of chopped tomatoes. I had the fish cakes in Panko (not) breadcrumbs with poached egg & hollandaise. The potato greatly outweighed the fish, it had been blitzed so much it was mushy & lacked any kind of seasoning whatsoever. I asked for a wine list but no one came back to take my order & we were probably served by 5 different staff members throughout the meal. Coincidentally no one came & asked how the meal was until I went to pay at the end. I wouldn't reccomend to any of my friends which is a shame since the location is lovely.
The food is always excellent, but the service is often slow.
Went to the George Inn for a Wedding Anniversary meal on August 8th. Best meal out for as long as I can remember, starter, main and dessert. Waitress was very efficient and friendly (cant remember your name sorry!)
Just need to do something about the dodgy salt mills!
Disappointed that with an early evening booking so many choices were unavailable. July 27th @ 19:00
Food was expensive and not that special, quite a lot of food was missing such as ham, beef and couple of other things, realised afterwards that something was missing from my ploughman’s! Were charged for potatoes when they were part of the meal! Poor and disappointing
The staff were helpful, changing the table around for us to accommodate a bigger group than booked.
The food was fine, but not great.
It took a while for us to receive our food, but it was all served at the same time which is good.
We weren’t asked if we’d like desserts 🤷♀️
Value wish it was fine.
Sadly the men’s toilets were a mess, not necessarily the George’s fault, more likely someone left a mess and didn’t bother to tell the staff.
Overall I’d recommend it, mostly because there’s so little choice in this area, but I don’t feel I’ll be rushing back.
Overall this was a very pleasant experience. What I didn't like was the non-availability of a number of items on the menu. Part of the enjoyment of a meal out is pondering and selecting one's choice and to be told then that you can't have what has been offered is most disappointing, particularly when one of the party is a vegetarian and there is a fairly limited choice to begin with. I hope to return to the George and it is my sincere wish that next time what is offered is actually available.
Very good food and beer but indifferent service. Worst was the stupid arrangement that you couldn't set up a tab to eat outdoors by leaving a credit card behind the bar. This is how most pubs deal with that situation
Food reasonable. Service almost non -existent and very slow
I booked a table at The George Inn for Father's Day for myself, my mum and dad. We use to go the George Inn frequently in the past and we always enjoyed the wide selection of food and the great service. It seems that the place has been taken over by a larger corporation and things have unfortunately gone down hill as a result. The menu is very small compared to what it use to be like and it was noticeable how empty the place was for seven o'clock in the evening on a Sunday.
When we got there, we were informed that about 5 dishes on the menu were not available, which was disappointing considering the menu is not that large anyway. After we had ordered, we were then told that the meal my mother had ordered was also unavailable and she had to choose again. When the food arrived, the waitress said that she had been told to say by the kitchen that my meal (half a rack of ribs) was not of a standard that the chef was happy with and so money would be taken off our bill. So I was basically being told 'your meal isn't going to be very nice' - which is not very encouraging at all. As it was, the ribs were not good; there was hardly any meat on them and they were very dry. I was surprised that they had been served up to me in that condition.
Then it came to dessert and out of the six desserts on the menu, 3 were not available. By now we were all quite cross; I would not have booked at a restaurant knowing that so many dishes would not be available. We asked to speak to the manager who explained that as it was Father's Day, they had run out of many dishes from lunchtime. I would have expected a good restaurant to have been prepared for a larger trade on a day like that. The staff were very apologetic and took a 1/4 off our bill as well as giving us free drinks but it was a very disappointing evening and we will not be going there again. It is such a shame because we always enjoyed our visits there in the past. Things have obviously changed for the worse.
I picked here because we’d eaten here before and the food was always really nice! So I took my dad for Father’s Day! There was lack of communication between staff, took ages to take our order, food then came out with 2 meals being forgotten as “chef forgot to put the fish on” as told by waiter, chips were really over done and burgers were dry! In all it wasn’t great so won’t be eating here again which is a shame as it’s always been so nice!! Definitely need to look into a better chef!!
Visited here on recommendation. Wonderful experience. Outstanding food. Excellent service.
Took our three year old grandson who loved the food, play area and ducks.
