The Go Down Restaurant
You can enjoy our fine cuisine via a fixed price special menu and the full A la carte menu which is available at any time.
A lovely independent restaurant with a great location - ideal if you're visiting the Grand Opera House across the road. The set menu offers a two or three course deal and the food is of a high quality. This time we had the chicken liver pate followed by the seafood pancake and the chicken in mushroom sauce. The food was as lovely as ever. This place is worth trying if you've never been before.
One of the best restaurants I have been to and would definitely return next time I’m in york
3rd time in 12 months always excellent food with generous portion sizes
Food average - v ill afterwards.
Runny egg on black pudding hard boiled. Gravy with lamb super salty.
Felt that the staff were more interested in other tables.
This is the first bad review I have given so not a troll.
Excellent food, beautifully presented at an incredible price!
A hidden gem in the heart of York. Once we found it we keep coming back! It is always wonderful!
Excellent dining experience! Our party of 7 all agreed that the food was great and set menu very good value. The waitress was very obliging and friendly and I always appreciate having my coat taken away and hung up safely when I arrive at a restaurant. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Go Down and hope to return soon myself.
Excellent service and delicious food! Well worth a visit!
Really good food and drink. Choice of fixed price or al a cart. Good vegetarian choice on al a carte. Complimentary bread was a nice touch. . We went on a Friday evening, lovely atmosphere and service. Very friendly and helpful staff.
A little disappointing. We last went in January and the food was a lot better. We both had Yorkshire puddings for a starter which were smaller than last time and were burnt. For some reason they had changed the onions that used to come with it to beetroot! Don't think that works. I had the fish pancake which was really good, my partner having the burger which was OK but not sparkling. They brought out fries when she was expecting hand cut chips but did exchange them. On dessert I went for the lemon meringue pie which was really good and filling. My wife went for chocolate pot which she had had before but again was not great, not that chocolatey and they brought cream that was like milk (disgusting). Chocolate mousse needs proper cream. I think that I won't be visiting for a least a year to give them a chance to improve the standard back to what it was.
We found the food to be excellent and there was a good selection on the set menu, which was very reasonable in price. The service was very good, of a high standard and made our group feel relaxed as we enjoyed our meal. We found it to be very good value
We would recommend this restaurant to friends and family
This restaurant is sensational, in all areas. The choice and quality of food are exceptional. I had King Prawn starter which I have never seen anywhere else, followed by rack of Lamb with a Shepherds Pie, all top quality. Despite being full I had Apple and Gooseberry Crumble Pie with Custard - brilliant
The drinks selection is great and the wine reasonably priced. The service is excellent.
I would encourage anyone to try this restaurant.
Just as good as last year, which was our first visit . We will definitely be back.
We celebrated a special birthday and was presented with free glass of bubbly which was amazing. Staff were efficient and friendly. Food was excellent. Dissappointed with the 10% service charge, but thought it value for money.
Charming restaurant and excellent value. Enormous portions /
Despite scaffolding obstructing the restaurant, we were pleased to find The Go Down.
Once in the service was excellent. Food choice was impressive, including choice of three or two courses at a reasonable cost, and a la carte, if you wanted to splash out. staff were very good and attentive.
We will definitely recommend and go again. Thank you
Very nice restaurant with very good food and service. Just the right size, level of noise; very pleasant service; nice 'family run' restaurant. Would recommend. Quieter during the week than on Fridays and Saturdays.
Unfortunately we chose a very quiet Wednesday evening to dine at Go Down. Having said this the staff were lovely and very welcoming. The set menu is excellent value for money. I did wonder whether the portions would be smaller but this certainly wasn't the case.
The three of us each chose different starters and all of them were very good and well presented. However we were each disappointed with our main courses. I think the chef must have dropped the salt pot into the mashed potato on my Shepherds pie although the meat was lovely. My partner chose linguine which was more like a salty noodle soup with sliced chicken on top, and my friend had pork escalope which was served in a mass of very rich red wine sauce. Desserts were a good portion size, well presented and tasty. Such a shame the mains were poor as we would have definitely recommended based on everything else.
Really lovely evening, the hostess made us feel so welcome. Food was delicious. Really recommend.
Was great really enjoyed
Lovley little restaurant, good food, good value, excellent service, complimentary bread and balsamic oil was a nice touch and the sign of a good restaurant
The restaurant is a bit small and congested, but the food and service were fantastic.
The go down is a little hidden gem staff were lovely and very helpful service was excellent and the food was amazing, black pudding starter was first class and the fish pancake main was 5star will definitely be going back
Fantastic food and fantastic people
Had a great meal here to celebrate my daughters graduation. Food was very nice (lots of it) and the service was excellent. Overall price was very good too. Would highly recommend.
2nd time here, really good food, hight recommend. Just need to book, gets busy
We really enjoyed our evening at the Go Down restaurant. The food was excellent with the fillet steak one of the best my husband has had anywhere. The service was attentive - this is clearly a family business. Best of all, although fairly busy, we could actually hear each other talk! An excellent combination.
Lovely restaurant and very tasty food. I would definitely recommend it.
We often go here when in York. Food is reliably excellent. On this occasion a large party of 20 contributed to a busy night for the staff but they handled it all very professionally. Thank you.
Excellent in every respect! I could thoroughly recommend this hidden gem!
Love coming to this restaurant, usually when it’s a special occasion. The food is lovely ambience and always have a lovely welcome from the staff.
You always feel like the customer comes first and service is good.
We had an excellent meal at the Go Down starting with lovely home made bread very good choice off the set menu including some of the best Calamari I have ever had followed by a very tasty duck leg, no room for pudding but they looked delicious.
I would certainly go back
Great food and service in a cosy and comfortable setting.
3rd time at this restaurant, everything was great as previous.
Excellent atmosphere with fantastic food very reasonably priced. Would definitely go again!!
Although the steak as a little under cooked for our liking, it did not detract from the quality. Staff were very good and the ambiance was just about perfect.
We experienced a lovely quiet meal with excellent service from a family who obviously cares. A free carafe of water, free loaf of hot homemade bread and polite service could not have been any better. Apart from beef being slightly tough all other aspects of the food were excellent and we enjoyed our visit. Would highly recommend.
The food was ok but could've been much better. My burger bun was burnt and unfortunately inedible. My partner's roast potatoes were also cold. When our plates were taken we weren't asked how the meal was so I mentioned to the waiter the above, nothing was done about it. We refused to pay the (optional) service charge added to the bill as a result of this and unfortunately won't be returning. I'm hoping this was an off night as we've wanted to try this place for a long time.
My table was ready on my arrival, which was nice. Staff were polite and friendly and service was really good. The quality of the food was first class and I will definitely call again in the future. My only complaint would be of the temperature inside the restaurant, it was really hot as it was busy but the ceiling fans weren't used until shortly before we left.
Overall really really good.
Our first visit the Go Down restaurant and it was a memorable experience with first class service from start to finish , excellent food choice and superb quality in all three courses.
Very friendly staff and nothing was too much for them in making sure we had a great night and we will have no hesitation in booking our next meal when returning to visit York in the future.
