The Jolly Farmer
The Jolly Farmer is a historic pub located in the beautiful countryside of Cookham Dean. The pub dates back to 1788 and many of its original features are still in place. Since 1987, The Jolly Farmer has been owned by the community.
We serve a selection of traditional pub dishes and wood fired pizzas.
If you're longing for a warm fireplace during the cold months, then come and keep warm next to one of our toasty log fires. We also have a stunning beer garden, offering the best spot in Cookham for a refreshing drink or an alfresco meal when the sun is shining.
And for the children, we have our popular play area, so the whole family are welcome to have a Jolly time, even the dog.
What a lovely country pub...super in every way! An excellent meal made even more enjoyable by the friendly staff who made us feel most welcome and attended to our ever need! Such a lovely ambience with a cosy log fire and we also noticed they have a great pub garden which will be fabulous in the summer! Thank you so much for a most enjoyable afternoon!
Lovely staff, fantastic food, great area out the back to have a drink in the summer
I had booked a table for lunch in advance for 1.45pm. We ordered at 2pm and once we’d ordered were told food might be 20 minutes. We didn’t get our starters until 2.45pm and then our main courses at 3.30pm. Very little apologies and explanation was that the kitchen was busy, but it was peak time on a Saturday so surely that was expected?
Not good at all!
we really enjoyed our lunch at The Jolly Farmer. The staff were extremely attentive, seating us and taking our drinks order whilst we relaxed by the lovely open fire. We ordered Moules Mariniere and the lamb cutlets, which the waitress had told us that they had been butchered in front of her at the local farm that morning. The moules had also been purchased by the landlady that morning at Billingsgate Market. You can't get any fresher than that. Lovely food, lovely wine, lovely atmosphere. A great pub which we will definitely be coming back to very soon.
What a lovely pub! Great settling & loved the food! Such a friendly atmosphere and really nice staff! The home-made gravalax and roast pork were both delicious with great crackling! Will definitely will back soon for more! Was very surprised to see such a nice big garden in the back...will be amazing in the summer!
No Sunday lunch at 2.30 on Sunday
Food poor and expensive
Would not recommend for food
We really enjoyed our meal at The Jolly. All food was perfectly cooked, fish and chips, burger, fresh pasta, grilled turkey with roast vegetables. The atmosphere is welcoming and the service was very attentive.
We booked a roast lunch and felt very disappointed with what we were served up. Overcooked vegetables, poor presentation and greasy potatoes. All in all a very poor meal.
A great pub, with a fantastic vibe. The food however left a lot to be desired. I would give it another go.
At the moment the kitchen of the Jolly Farmer is being refitted. However, the deep fried Brie starter was only warm. My green beans were actually cold. The red cabbage was luke warm and the chips were placed on the top of the vegetables so could have gone soggy. The steak and ale pie had very little gravy in it which made it rather dry, spoiling what could have been a very nice pie. The chicken burger and the Jolly Burger were satisfactory.
Food was good but the service was poor despite there being only two tables.
I had to go to the bar various times because the staff was chatting behind the bar and didn't pay any attention to us. In addition, I ordered vanilla ice cream for my 3 year old and got salted caramel and they still made me pay full price for it.
Hopefully this was a one off, we will certainly give it another go and hope for better service.
I recently revisited The Jolly whilst they were in the middle of a full kitchen renovation and was amazed that they still managed to serve super food under such difficult circumstances! The food was up to it’s usual high standard and I think the team should be very proud and congratulated on the quality of service and food they provided during such a difficult period! I had some extremely fresh and delicious sea bass for my main together with a homemade gravalax starter...I couldn’t fault it...just superb!
Booked Sunday lunch but didn't know you had to pre-order a roast. It must have been the same for other people because when we came to order at 2pm, the only things left were mashed potato pie (very rich dish, swimming in cheese) & half a roast chicken - which had a great flavour, but was dry, and served with a dubious but quite tasty ratatouille. This is such a shame as we love this pub - dog friendly, great garden for kids and good pizzas. But if you're going to have a Sunday lunch menu, it has to be available. It should have had roast, burgers, steak pies etc.
So I would recommend this pub BUT, only if I explained everything above at the same time.
Great local pub. Friendly with great walks from their back garden. Value for money.
We came for a special family lunch. My sister is gluten free and the menu was very limited. Also unfortunately they had run out of roast pork and beef by 13:00. Which meant limited choice for all the others wanting to eat roast.
Extremely courteous and hospitable people. Great garden for the children, in great surroundings
5 star, thank you
I searched for somewhere dog and child friendly and not only did I get that, but the food was great, service spot in and there was just this feeling of being welcomed. Loved every minute of it, perfect place to catch up with my Son and his girlfriend.
We were 4 adults, 3 girls and a dog. The park and outside space was fantastic, lots of parking, great food, just great 👍🏻
Fabulous delicious food and very friendly staff. Lovely garden and play area
A lovely genuine village pub with friendly staff and good service. the food was very good, particularly the pizza oven menu.
Food was disappointing, sign in pub said all food freshly prepared however the speed in which it was served to us it couldn’t have been fresh. Even the quality was only ok. Our order was taken by a youth, obviously well under 18, working behind the bar
We had to clear our own plates after the main course, waited to long
As a impromptu date night whilst staying in the area it was a welcome surprise to have dinner here. The staff was nice and attentive. The food was reasonably priced and amazing taste.
An ok experience but no more than that. Sunday roast not of the best quality and certainly not value for money. Staff very friendly, location fantastic, not many people there resulting in lack of atmosphere generally.
Staff brilliant, comfortable surroundings.
The garden is superb for children.
Friendly bar staff, lovely setting, delicious food. Well worth a visit.
Very accommodating, friendly staff with good food and beer. Great beer garden with big enclosed kids play area. Dog friendly too.
Great pub. Good and friendly people. Great evening.
Ok, so possibly they over egg the ‘doggy pub’ thing, because it’s really no more dog friendly than most others.
My roast was lovely. However tge fish and chips looked a little sad, the stroganoff was one for ‘rate my plate’ and the pizza had way too much cheese on it.
Half the staff were helpful, however the myriad teens didn't seem to have a clue.
Look at better blends of coffee - found it tasted almost burned... over-roasted.
Would i come again, yes. Only for the roast and not for the £5 a portion olives which were nothing special. I can get better ones at Tesco!
The food can be very average but if you are going for pizza and gelato then it’s outstanding! The beer selection is usually very good but today they only had 1 draft lager option left. The atmosphere is relaxed with a wonderful outside area for kids to play and it’s dog friendly. Yaay!!!
Fantastic. Second time there. Amazing and delicious both times.
This a typical English pub with log fires. Not a huge menu but big enough. The pizzas were really good, one pizza can be shared between two. Didn’t have to ask for chilli oil it was put on the table along with black pepper. Wines reasonable and good. This is the first time I’ve been there, and actually didnt know this pub existed, but I’ll definitely go again. At the end of the evening the lady serving drinks and food called us a taxi which was very decently priced.
We selected the pub as we needed somewhere that was both dog and child friendly. The staff were lovely and the food was very good but there was quite a long wait for the food to come.
Food dropped on floor by waiver who left without comment. Promised a refund for one starter portion which was meant to be a main course. No refund given. Several bees crawling on windows by table. Other food was good.
We were there on Sun 30th March. The food was amazing, there were six of us along with a energetic little boy. The young lady serving us was very attentive and charming. I felt awful because when we left I realised that I had not tipped her and she must thought we were really tight so please pass on our apologies and thank her for her very good service, she was a slim pretty girl.
The park was excellent for our rambunctious little boy who stayed out there for a good 2 hours so we had to take it in shifts to watch him:)
The food was absolutely delicious and really good sized portions, hearty would be the word. We had never been to this restaurant before but will definitely come again. It is highly recommended (and next time I'll remember to tip:) Thank you all.
Ambience and warm feeling of a lovely community pub. Welcomes dogs and kids. Stay away from the deep fried brie starter, it was frozen in the middle, even after 2 attempts by the chef and 45 minutes of waiting. S/he needs to invest in a kitchen thermometer or fry at a lower temperature for longer...
Lovely Pub with a huge beautiful garden. Great food, friendly attentive staff. The specials choice was extensive, I went for lamb cutlets, perfectly cooked. Highly recommend
The food couldn’t have been worse. Six of us for dinner, ordering different items off the menu and daily specials. The lasagne was dried out, days old. The steak and ale pie was sticky and pastry dry. Again, days old. Need I continue?
Very comfortable and great food. Lovely garden with really good children's play facilities. We will be returning soon.
The noise was caused by wookmen. I am sure it ois normally quiet.
The best spaghetti Bolognaise I have eaten outside Italy.
Lovely village pub which has kept a real pub feel yet offers great food. I'm sure in Summer the garden is a great feature, but in mid-Winter, it's the fires and cosy bar atmosphere which are great. Nice to find a pub with both young and old enjoying themselves. Almost heaven!
Great village owned pub with super food and many fresh and changing items
