Ambiance, Service, Food all excellent, just love it!!
It was absolutely amazing!
My other half does not like a roast but he is converted will DEFO be going back!
My wife and I spent this weekend in London as a Valentines gift from me to her. We travelled from Gloucester and stayed at the Montcalm hotel. We went to a show at the Barbican in the afternoon and were eagerly looking forward to eating at the Jugged Hare in the evening. The restaurant looked fantastic and we were really excited by the menu, especially the highly recommended game dishes. We had a table booked for 8:00 and were impressed that someone rang us the night before to check our booking. I was very unhappy to find that when we arrived all but one of the game dishes were ‘sold out’ as were the majority of the specials. If I had wanted steak or burger I would have booked elsewhere. We left without eating and spent the next hour trying to find somewhere else to eat on a busy Valentines weekend in a storm! The waiter was highly embarrassed and offered us a free drink but that goes no way to making up for this. I have emailed the restaurant direct but had no response.
Furious does not come close.
Well the Jugged Hare is known for game so we went in season, expecting to eat some. We attempted to order each of the game offerings on the menu to be told it was sold out (Saturday lunchtime @ noon!). The only game they had left was pheasant, which I was warned would take 30 minutes, so I opted for the pork belly (given I had a 3 year old with me who can't wait that long). 35 minutes later the most dried up pork belly I have ever experienced turned up (I thought it was impossible to overcook pork belly but they achieved it), my wife had a similar experience with the burger. The only blessing was they didn't charge for the pork.
Took my wife on Valentines Night and had a fantastic meal. The Hare Eclair was amazing along with the flat iron. Will definitely be returning.
Great restaurant with excellent service & a good menu especially seasonal game.
Efficient, polite service and good choice with a decent choice.
Wonderful night for our friends birthday a great place & the food was amazing
I visited the Jugged Hare for my wedding anniversary as my wife is a massive game fan. My starter of game salami was great and my wife had a delicious game terrine with a pastry case. My wife had a great venison casserole with swede and lentil and I ordered woodcock. The woodcock was very under cooked and could have done with an extra 2 mins in the oven or should have been basted in a frying pan in lots of butter.
For desert I enjoyed a delicious chocolate mouse with blood orange & peppermint.
Good atmosphere & capable service was spoiled by the undercooked woodcock.
We had a table from 3.30pm, on a Saturday. We had main courses, but when we wanted to order dessert, we were told the kitchen had closed. As it was a Birthday lunch, this was dissapointing. They could have at least asked in advance if we'd like to order dessert. Staff very polite though.
Very friendly and professional service, outstanding food and overall great evening as always
Nice ambience and just the right busy on a sunday night. Food's good too.
This is the third or fourth time I have been to the Jugged Hare - depending on when you go, the atmosphere is very different. For a Sunday lunch there's a pleasant buzz, and proximity to The Barbican on the Beethoven Weekender means there are lots of tables of women, in contrast to the fairly raucus City boy masculine ambience on weekday evenings. The food was excellent - pheasant roasted whole but carved for ease of eating, superb roast chicken, really excellent vegetable accompaniments. Only quibble is the bread sauce - under seasoned and for the first time I understand why the haters compare it to wallpaper paste. Fortunately the gravy is delicious enough for that not to be a major setback. And the Hare Eclair is so good that I am planning to go back just for a glass of wine and a couple of those as a snack.
We always wanted to go looking at the display inside and the fact that this place is busy. Currently, they have some new year offer until 9/2/20 so we decided to visit. The food quality and ambiance is good with wide selection of "wild" varieties. Love the indoor display of stuffed birds. My only disappointment was very small starter portions, e.g. the mixed game and pistachio terrine with toast came with 2 finger sized fried bread. The other special salami starter we had was also very small in portion. The available wines are also on the expensive side, which they don't need to be in my opinion. All in all, if you want to try some traditional game food, I recommend this if you are prepared to spend some money.
Service esp at the bar was lacking in professionalism. Not to the extent to mar the experience but expecting something more slick and mature.
Service and food amazing, from the booking till the end. Friendly staff, nice environment. Thanks to Chef Oliver, he took care about us. We had some nice vernison paired with a good Malbec Melipal. For sure we gonna come back for a dinnner very soon 👍🏼
One reason to come here: best game in town. Near the end of the season but the partridge was excellent.
generally very good but on this sunday (26th Jan 2020) it seemed that they had the "b" chef and team running things, it showed up in starters and main courses
It is a great place to come on any occasion, tho the location makes it convenient for visitors to the Barbican. The staff is warm and welcoming, and the space has a nice ambience to it. The quality of food is great and consistent, we've visited a few times and would definitely come back again.
Great place for roast dinner, super nice
Excellent food and service. They even provided one dish not officially on that day’s menu. Good wine list too.
Great little pub restaurant with nice selection of game. I would say I wasn't very fond of the bright lights from the kitchen but otherwise it was nice.
If you are looking for a gastro pub that serves game, then this is your spot. The atmosphere is also great, the menu is one that leaves you struggling to choose what to eat, the wine is great and a good selection of beer for a quick pint before your meal. Oh and the service staff are very friendly.
There are a few ways in which it could be improved:
1) Wine - please don't serve the red wine cold, we had to wait 15 mins before it tasted ok.
2) You could do with employing 1 or 2 more serving staff. We had to wait to order drinks and sometimes found it difficult to grad someones attention.
3) It feels a bit like you've stopped trying. I have been here a few times so know what your plates look like. The trout was nice, but Michelin 10 course meal size. I had the whole pheasant and the chef had carved off the bone for me, but had done a particularly bad job, which meant I had to use my fingers to get the rest off.
Theses are easily fixable and would change it from being maybe I'll come to can't wait to see you again.
Great I recommend !
A bit noisy, more for group of people
What a fab place and their signature hare dish was simply outstanding
Everything was brilliant. Only one thing I’d recommend as an improvement is that staff don’t ask so often if you want to order - it make you feel being rushed.
Everything else was great.
Great food and excellent service
An interesting menu and food was excellent with prompt and friendly service which adds up to good value with convenience to the Barbican Centre.
Good setting for a business lunch, a little pricey.
We have visited The Jugged Hare several times and loved it. However, this time was completely different. The service was weird (veering between trying to 'hard sell' us particular dishes and then completely ignoring us for an uncomfortably long time between main and dessert) and the food was nowhere near as good as we've had there in the past (the dessert was particularly unpleasant - a grainy chocolate mousse topped with what I can only describe as marmalade). It's a real shame as we loved this place but this experience has sadly put us off booking again.
First time in a gastropub and really love it. Strongly recommend this place.
We understand that preparations for new years evening were progressing and therefore service was very busy. Overall a lovely place. Food could have been better seasoned
Get the pork belly. The jugged hare is good as well.
Would I recommend , I would but take account of time of booking. Ours was 3pm and we were told on arrival if we wanted to order food it needed to be now as kitchens were closing! Then asked whilst still eating main if we wanted dessert then needed to order now. Obviously being ever so slightly annoyed we said no thank you. It’s not like we walked in off street we had table booked weeks ago. Food excellent but don’t think you should be rushing your customers. If you are open, you are open.
The service was earnest, but unprofessional.
The chef took good food and ruined it. My lovely grouse was overcooked, while my husband's nice mallard was served practically raw.
Good wine list.
Very noisy room.
Enjoyed a pre-Christmas dinner with some colleagues. Overall good fun and we enjoyed ourselves. Service was very intermittent and serving time between courses was very slow. The meal became a 3 hour ordeal which was a lot longer than we had planned for. Food was good but service on the whole let the experience down. If I return, I may consider pre-ordering.
The food was delicious but there wasnt much of it for the price (pre theatre menu, 2 courses for £25). My vegetarian main course was the size of a starter. Waited quite a long time for food, due to a full restaurant. Our waiter, Francisco, was very friendly and helpful and the manager was very lovely and compensated me when I relayed my disappointment re. my main course. I would definitely return as I would love to try their signature dish.
Had a wondeful evening. Thank you to the lovelly staff who were so attentive. what a fantastic wine and Ale collection. very british and very special meny. hare eclair starter was full of so many flavours xx
