The Laughing Gravy
Relaxed and inviting, we offer an incredible menu of fresh, seasonal dishes with a well-chosen wine list that reflects our attention to detail.
Occupying the ground floor of an original foundry building, the restaurant, which is in walking distance from both the Old and Young Vic, seats up to 50 diners and has a buzzy bar.
Over all it was a great dinner and the waiter who's first day it was was absolutely fantastic. I hope he passes the probation period...
The gravy really was on another level. My only grip and this I'm sure was because of the time of day we were there was the lack of trimmings. I enjoy cabbage probably more than most but was disappointed that it was the bulk of the trimmings and not enough root veg.
You MUST have the puddings...
A lovely place, a great first experience. Nice decor, friendly service and excellent food
Excellent meal. Very comfortable and quiet restaurant. Attentive service.
Everything about this place as great. Make sure you get CJ as your server!
We had a really enjoyable Sunday lunch. The food was very good and the perfect size, not too big and not too small. We left feeling satisfied. I have to say, the gravy/jus was lovely if you like a rich thin gravy/jus. I would recommend the laughing Gravy to anyone.
If I had one criticism, it would be that my plate of food could have been a bit warmer when I received it but I am just being picky.
Outstanding gastropub. Service was excellent - incredibly freindly, chatty staff and the food exceeded my expectations. Probably the best Sunday roast I've had in London. Would highly recommend the beef roast.
Lovely restaurant with good selection of dishes. Polite and friendly service. Reasonable value for money and high quality of food. Good location near Waterloo and Southwark tubes.
Superb place, I honestly have no idea how this isn't constantly booked up. Food is fantastic, service is just as good. Have been here a couple of times and both times have left feeling very full and very happy.
It's a bit pricey so isn't a cheap night out but for what it is, I would 100% pay again.
We arrived and the table was ready, the service was excellent as was the food. The 4 of us had a really lovely time and could not find fault with anything. I would highly recommended this restaurant. Every table was taken, food and drinks arrived quickly and efficiently we will defiantly go back if we are back in London. We loved it.
We had Avery good welcome and although the place was empty as we ate very early we still had a table by the toilet entrance. The staff were attentive and the meal enjoyable though the cheeses board was unexciting with only tiny pieces of chess biscuits.
The Laughing Gravy definitely surpassed our expectations from the moment we arrived!
The menu was varied, full of unusual twists and there was an interesting wine list plus a good selection of cocktails.
Everything was delicious and the staff were friendly and efficient.
We would highly recommend it as a alternative to the standard central London restaurants.
We thought the food was unique and tasty and beautifully presented. Somehow the service did not match the refinement of the food so it affected our experience a little.
Sadly food was a let down. Service slow but ambience nice. I was excited to try out this restaurant with such good reviews but very disappointing. Good over complicated and not nice at all
Service staff were lovely in not hassling us to finish early. Delicious food. Desserts a little pricey but otherwise zero complaints. A delightful evening.
Absolutely fantastic, totally recommend!
Cute, bright restaurant. Great place for a family meal or special occasion. I’d definitely take my parents/grandparents here as the ambient noise wasn’t too loud and the service was great. Sunday roast was delicious.
Great service, food, drink and atmosphere at The Laughing Gravy, highly recommend
Excellent Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, tasty food but modest portions. Service was friendly and attentive. The glass roof with fairy lights was pretty but the glass looked a little clouded.
Fab food & service, elegant decor
I only chose this place to meet a friend after work because of the name and the fact it had good reviews and was close to Waterloo was a bonus. It didn't disappoint. We had an absolutely delightful meal in a charming restaurant. Hidden gem I believe I saw written somewhere, I'll say. Tucked away in busy Blackfriars I felt like I was in a local restaurant I've been going to for years. The food was excellent, the service friendly and efficient, the room was cosy yet airy and I could hear myself think, we had a lovely time. The loos were nice too, always a plus point for that. As for the all important question would I return, you bet I would.
I used this for a business meal. Interesting menu, with a good range of dishes. My party were generally impressed, thought some thought the portion sizes were a little small.
Overall, good experience, but poor value for money.
Service was fine, a little slow at times and there was an error on our bill, but overall our waiter was nice. I wasn’t sure why we were waited on by multiple different people but the main guy was fine.
Food - quite good but not spectacular. Had to add quite a bit of salt for flavour and pepper to my rabbit ragout. There was also a bit too much pasta and not enough meat. The chips with truffle were also disappointing - they weren’t actually chips with shaved truffle; instead they were soaked in ‘truffle oil’ which was quite dense and heavy.
Ambience was nice, my chair was rickety and didn’t stay straight, but the environment, music and lighting was very good. The lights dimmed as the night went on which was nice.
I was a little bit let down that I wrote on my Opentable request that it was my girlfriends birthday and the restaurant seemed to know nothing about it until I requested. I recently went to Hawksmoor for my birthday and without even asking, the staff said happy birthday and even knocked off the dessert. Unfortunately it felt like we were just another couple of customers which was fine, it just wasn’t special. They did put a candle on the dessert which was very nice after I asked, though.
Value for money was just not there though. I can’t justify paying £5 for a measly portion of chips doused in cheap truffle oil, or £23 for pasta with a little bit of rabbit meat.
Thank you very much for the experience, I enjoyed the food, but at this point in time I can’t recommend the restaurant.
Excellent food; interesting wine list; friendly and efficient service
Generally it was lovely. The roast was perfect in composition and portion. The wine list offered a good range. My only disappointment was the cheese. Mature cheddar and a bit of brie doth not a cheese plate make. It was markedly underwhelming in comparison with the main course.
Otherwise it was simply lovely
Fantastic food, fantastic staff. fantastic ambiance.
Excellent restaurant where we always receive a great welcome. The cooking is excellent and the menu interesting. The wine list has some interesting bottles at a reasonable for London price. Service is friendly and impeccable.
Excellent food. Great service. Happy, cheerful staff.
Great food and service. Interesting mix of food and everything was delicious. Also great wine with a good selection
The best roast and strongly recommend for future.
A very good location too.
Excellent small restaurant. Very friendly staff and very good food and wine. Highly recommended
We enjoyed our first visit to laughing gravy and will return. The main room is unexpectedly light and spacious thanks to a large roof light. It was quiet when we were there (Thursday lunchtime) so not much atmosphere but on a busier sitting we can imagine a pleasant vibe. The food and wine were good - I enjoyed a delicious malt-glazed pork belly which was beautifully cooked with shards of crisp crackling speared into the neat mound of crushed celeriac. Plenty of choice of wines by the glass or 500 cl carafe.
Friendly but not pushy service.
Lovely restaurant and staff! Did a great job accommodating for my allergies.
Fantastic service. Amazing food! Will definitely be travelling from Southampton to visit again. Would highly recommend!
Absolutely wonderful evening! From the appetizers to the wine and main entrees, a true delight.
An excellent venue for a celebratory family lunch. Wonderful food and wines. Made for a very enjoyable Saturday!
Beautiful little restaurant in a great location!
We went for the Sunday roast, my partner had lamb which was tough and dry. I had beef which was only okay.
Service was good and friendly, but will not return.
Great food, really. We enjoyed very much our Sunday roasts (lamb, mine, and beef for my partner - both superb). Good choice of wine, outstanding desserts. Would definitely recommend. Great service, friendly and never overwhelming.
The description of the food was fab and so was the presentation. However all the dishes were tasteless.
Excellent roast enjoyed by all and dessert was delicious, friendly staff will definitely be back.
