The Library at The Public
An excellent pre- or post- theater choice. The staff was warm and welcoming. The food was delicious but the portions were too large.
Impeccable service, varied and always wonderful menu, and ideal for pre- theatre dining at the Public. A total pleasure.
Excellent service, delicious meal...what more can you ask for? The food is relatively unfussy which we love and the portions were substantial, although maybe a bit too many french fries! We love coming here.
Very good service- kind staff; tasty food and drinks. Trout wasn’t great but loved the charcuterie, cavatelli, and beet salad, and apple crumble!
Best reason to go here is convenience if you're going to a show at Joe's Pub. Nice atmosphere, good food. On the expensive side with appetizers $12-$18 and main courses in the $30+ range. Drinks are expensive too. $18 for a cocktail and glasses of wine $14-$22.
Beet salad is particularly good.
The menu is very limited, the service not very good and the prices much more expensive than they are on their menu online. I had a $23 hamburger which is listed at $18 on line. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Nice versatile menu. Staff very professional and attentive. Food was as excellent. Slow night over summer weekend but quiet and enjoyable.
It's a no-brainer to eat here before seeing a show at the Public or even at Joe's Pub -- you can take your time and the service is friendly and fast. Fish tacos were a tiny bit dry, but the burger and the grilled broccolini were both excellent.
Great choices for restaurant week, thoughtful menu!
Went to dinner before a show and thoroughly enjoyed the Library.
Attended during Summer Restaurant Week 2019.
From start to finish our experience was superb!
Will absolutely recommend to everyone!
We really enjoyed our time at the library – a lot of food options for our different tastes and the service was fine. I would’ve appreciated a little more attention as we were trying to make a show that night and it took a bit to get our check etc.
And while I enjoyed my dinner, there was no indication that the pasta dish I ordered would be quite spicy. I enjoy spicy food but I would’ve liked to of known it before hand.
I am spechless witt the service, food and overall staff Amanda you went beyond of excellent, apologies I forgot our host name but every single person were above and beyond!! Thank you thank you!!!
Great food, amazing cocktails, fantastic service.
I love this restaurant when I'm going to The Public. It is cozy and friendly. I really enjoyed the trout. I do wish that they would change the menu once in a while.
There is a lot to recommend here, but the menu is oddly limited. If you come more than once a month, there’s not much new to order, and what there is there is peculiarly seasoned and rather heavy. I want to like it more, but it feels like an out of town place striving to be hip.
This is one of my favorite “hidden gems” in NYC. Many know about The Public Theatre and all its wonderful plays — but few know about The Library hidden upstairs from the main lobby. I go there when I want to have a conversation — the music is low and everyone seems to speak quieter in the Astor Library setting. The service is A+++. There is a lovely bar with plush stools & backs. Also a sofa setting with large coffee table for drinks & appetizers. There is banquet and table dining. The food is delicious — lots of choices for sharing. Casual & comfortable.
The ambiance of the space is lovely. The seating is very comfortable and the lack of noise allows for great conversation. The service is impeccable. The cocktails are quite tasty and unique. We are two vegetarians and found the entree selection to be limited. We tried both veg friendly options and were more pleased with one over the other. The cauliflower cassoulet lacks both a depth of flavor and enough white beans and is over priced. I would come here again and perhaps stick to the small plate options and dessert.
The dorade was perfection. Ambiance is best anywhere.
First time I have dined here. It turned out to be a very slow night as most of the play season had ended so unusually not busy and nicely quiet. The trout dish was quite good and a nice not too big proportion. Thought it was odd that my companion who ordered a salad didn't get a bread plate and had to ask for one. The flan we shared for dessert was disappointing-too heavy and not very tasty. Worth an occasional trip to an historic restaurant location and the food and service were good but not spectacular.
Throwback to the old days when restaurants served generous portions of delicious food in a beautiful setting!
I like their place. Very cool feeling
My pre-theater dinner at The Library was extremely disappointing. My wild mushroom pasta was so salty as to be inedible. I sent it back in favor of a simple hamburger, now having only 30 minutes to curtain time. Service was adequate, although far from exceptional. Overall not a good experience.
Disappointed, my appetizer was good; however the fettuccine with favs beans that I ordered as my entree was so salty it was inedible. The second attempt was still too salty, I was starving and off to a show so I stomached it. I wasn’t asked how it was. My dining companion suggested the problem was that the pasta was half cooked earlier in too salty water so that when the dish was finished for the table it was already too salty. That makes sense because the chef should have gone low salt the second tine around
Great atmosphere and great food with excellent service at a premium price! Worth it!
Lovely wood-paneled room, efficient and friendly service, delicious food.
Lovely as always
The fried Calamari was very heavily breaded and not tasty and the signature burger was one of the least good that I’ve ever experienced. The prices are high and food quality poor.
But it is convenient when attending a show at the Public. The setting is excellent but go for a cocktail or dessert and coffee online
Still a good place to go if you're attending a show at the Public, but food was not as good as past experiences. MOUNDS of French fries served with the cheeseburger, but pretty tasteless. Tagliatele was good, but portion size seems to have shrunk. Calamari was tasty, but what happened to the sauce? Barely a sprinkle. When I complained to the waiter, he said I should have told him when we were served and he would have brought me more. Oh, well. Main thing is we got to our 7:00 curtain on time.
The convenience is great but the food is inedible time and time again. This time I tried fish and chips. I literally could not eat my fish. Ah well.
Loved everything, setting, service, food, location! Perfect!
I stumbled upon The Library at Joe's Public when I was looking for a last minute dinner reservation at a "nice place with good cocktails". I really enjoyed my time. The food was good and service was exceptional. It was pricey, which is the only reason I'd give it a 4/5.
I usually go here when seeing a show. The service is always top notch, and the food and drinks, very delicious, if a little pricey.
The Library is convenient for a meal before an evening performance at the Public. They get you out in time to make your curtain.
Prices are a bit high but the member discount helps. Our table’s order must have been mixed up with that of another party of two. I wrongly got a pasta dish with ham in it and I do not eat pork.
Dinner at the Library completed a wonderful Spring Saturday in NY.
Usually an all round and very good experience. Perfect for making show time at the Public. Service is quite good and food as well. All just a bit overpriced.
Staff at The Library were very accommodating from which table we wanted to sit at to being mindful of our show start time at Joe's. A special thanks to Will, our waiter...you made the experience a fun one!
Went with daughter for pre-concert dinner. Enjoyed tremendously.
