What Insiders Are Saying
The Lighterman is a British restaurant in Kings Cross that’s good for sitting on the canal with a drink and a snack.
We this venue for a pre-concert meal as we had tickets for a gig at Kings Place, which is nearby. The location is good with views of the redeveloped canal area from the top floor where we ate. The lower 2 floors were much busier, a bit frantic for my taste but maybe not if you were just having a drink. I had the venison pie which was terrific, really tasty and "home-made". I had brussels sprouts which were a little too "al dente" and no sign of the chestnuts which were supposed to be served with them. My wife had fish and chips, really nice fish, the batter was crisp on the outside, a tad soggy inside. Prices not bad for the area. Really good beer but I've forgotten its name. Service friendly although had to wait quite a while to be invited to order a drink, lost patience and went to the bar myself. On the whole a nice experience and I'd probably go again.
It was excellent. Our only issue was that on St Patricks Day the Guiness was not very good.
Good quality food, cooked well. However, a simple grilled chicken dish with only a roasted head of garlic for accompingment ended up being poor value after adding fries and a sauce - the sauce being a tiny mean pot of hollandaise for £2! the total dish costing £20.50 for simple chicken & chips. However the food was good quality, tasty and the service was excellent - the waitress was lovely.
Lovely atmosphere and views, staff were very attentive and organised
Amazing food and service! Would 100% recommend. Thanks so much!
Fantastic atmosphere, really buzzy. Great food and really attentive service. Got a quiet table as requested. Reall love the Lighterman. Great views too
The food is nice and the location is good. But it was too noisy to have a conversation and we were rushed.
Everything was very nice.
We had a Spanish waitress who was particularly nice, attentive but not overly and very smiley.
The bass was cooked great and potatoes were lovely, bread very nice, cheese great.
It was all good.
Great sea bass and very friendly staff, with lovely views over the canal from the first floor.
A great place to eat in Granary Square - always good food and a lively atmosphere. It gets very busy so always best to book! Been here several times and not been let down by food or service.
Nice setting and good interior. Menu was ok but limited as it was a Sunday. Good service and nice atmosphere butt not cheap
It was nice. There's great decor and it's in a great location in Kings Cross.
The is good if you pick the right thing on the menu.
It is VERY noisy- we went on a Sunday and it was busy and the acoustics meant it was very loud- hard to hear the others on your table talking.
The meal began well with some good choices of starters. The waitering staff were very attentive. Unfortunately the mains were not that great. The squash pie was under seasoned and the broccoli over salty. My battered fish was a bit doughy and not hot enough. We comp[lained to the manager and the suggestion was to have another dish although we did not want to do this. The meal was charged at full price which we found disappointing. A great location although very difficult to hear each other speak as the noise levels were quite high. We would not go again.
Came for an early dinner tonight with my mum and ordered a veg board to share, with skin on rosemary fries as a side, followed by spiced bread and butter pudding. Really disappointed. The aubergine tastes of nothing and what is the bowl of leaves and a carrot about? and why would you serve 5 goats cheese balls on a board for two? They should definitely try putting rosemary on the rosemary fries, they'd taste a lot nicer. Lose some of the brandy out of the custard and perhaps add some spice to the pudding as per the description on the menu. I would have given all this feedback to my server, had I been asked about my food at any point during or after the meal, but I wasn't. It's such a shame, it has a lovely location and venue but the food execution is poor and it was extremely noisy. Needs some soft furnishings to dampen the sound I feel.
Service was very good and the food was good too. Just a bit too noisy to talk but then it was a Friday night.
Yes only if to go early or get a table on the top floor. Had a lovely meal up there before. Had a second meal & was seated on the ground floor. Far too noisy for our group. Could do with some sound absorbsion there.
Delightful gastropub situated close to Kings Cross/ St. Pancras. Great food and attentive, friendly staff. would definitely recommend.
Excellent food, service frequently ensuring all is well. Very happy couple who will certainly re-visit in the future.
Excellent location with great friendly staff
Breakfast is not that good I'm afraid - pancakes are less than good - poached eggs with avocado is bad! They can't do it right either boiled or runny!
Baked eggs is nice though but you can have it better anywhere else
Lunch : flat bread is nice just like pizza and I enjoyed it with a table overlooking the granary square fountains
The place is really nice but they might need to do extra effort in changing the food menu
I'm going back for sure with my friends - just because of the location - food is not bad
good service - friendly polite and quick. we interacted with a number of people who worked there and they were all consistently high standard
Great location for a small get-together, friendly service, interesting food and really good wine!
Wonderful food, great service and a lovely view. The roast was especially good on Sunday.
The Lighterman was an amazing place to meet with friends. The ambiance was fabulous and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. There were two slight disappointments one was when we were asked if we were ready to order lunch which we were, however we expected the food would arrive possibly 20 minutes later and it arrived less than 2 minutes later. However that was a lack of communication we should have asked the waiter how long the food would take to arrive. The other issue was the vegetables were so hard they were difficult to cut into and eat. The Manager did ask me and I told him - he was going to mention it to the chef. Having said that I will definitely return to the restaurant and would definitely recommend it to friends.
Good for informal Sunday lunch. Excellent service. Lovely location.
The restaurant is in a great area. It has a nice, young atmosphere and lovely decor. The food is excellent, as is the service.
Great location in Granary Square. All meals at the table were well prepared and delicious. Good atmosphere for a Saturday night.
Food and service was great. It was very busy at the time I booked but still the staff were very attentive. Will definitely be back.
Great location and service however it was packed and cramped! The table next to us had their chair touching against our table and it was extremely noisy. My main course was very dry, no sauce was recommended The cocktails were served in smaller than usual cocktail glasses but at the same if not above average price. Overall abit disappointing to be honest although we were there at peak time.
We visited The Lighterman for the first time yesterday morning (Saturday) and we were not disappointed. The service was outstanding, notably Magda and Felix. To be honest, everybody who served us was attentive, personable and welcoming. I would highly recommend and will definitely revisit.
first time here with friends, wow what a place to go and have a lovely meal, food great, wine great, service great, only downside and it's not a biggy was the noice, but when you have every single table occupied it'll always be thus, definitely will go back and spread the word .... thank you lighterman team
Busy waterside pub in the increasingly hectic area north of Kings X. The beers and spirits are good, not cheap but fine. We had a bottle of their house red which was ok, might pay a bit more next time. We all had pub food burgers and fish and chips which was nice if pricey for what it is. Who knew Kins X would become so busy.
Great buzzing place with great vibes! Quite noisy but happy sounds! The food was great, ordered the veggie platter which I recommend but had a double portion with no croquettes, strange but didn’t ask as was so engrossed with company and our conversations. Definitely will return for sure!
Excellent venue. It was great sitting upstairs w a view of the yard in the evening. We did however have to call on the staff’s attention for basic things like ordering and the bill - in the sense that they didn’t come and check in on us as would have been expected.
We were so well looked after in this lovely setting with great food and ambiance. It is a great location and well priced food and choice of food and wine. Loved the staff who although very busy at the weekend worked really hard to serve well.
A beautifully designed airy and light gastro put on two levels with a big outdoor terrace in the very hip Granary Square complex of the newly designed Kings Cross. My kind of place. Good pub food well prepared with polite helpful service. Prices are reasonable and the menu is varied.
Great location, fantastic food, outstanding service, loved it!
The food was fantastic and the views great. However service was very slow, to the point i had to get up and find a memeber of staff 3 times during the meal. It's also very noisey upstairs when full, reminded me of my old school lunch hall.
If the service could be sorted out the food and venue would make it 4 or 5 stars.
Great location, really attentive staff, OK food.
Veggies options are just OK (2x undressed salads that lacked a lot of love).
Service was quite poor but they gave us a discount on the bill because they forgot a few items. Food tasted lovely though
