Unfortunately the restaurant was on fire when we arrived so we didn't get to eat there. This caused a pretty big inconvenience but at least we didn't burn alive!
The food was excellent but disappointing that it didn't all come out once. Pizza flatbreads came out 10 mins before rest of order so almost eaten by the time the rest arrived. Also, when I arrived it was a little before when the table was booked but instead of being taken to the table which clearly wasn't in use was just left to hang around.
We chose the Lighterman for an office lunch having been there before and had a lovely meal. This time we were very disappointed. There were 7 of us and we all ordered starters and main course. 5 of the starters arrived almost together, the other two arrived as everyone else was finishing theirs, and only after we asked where they were. No sooner had they finished their starters than their main courses arrived and the rest of the mains arrived before they had cleared away the starter plates for everyone else. One of our team is Gluten Free so they asked for a burger with out a Bun, when it arrived it was without BACON AND IN A BUN. After a wait it was replaced but with out the bacon, then that arrived separately. A member of staff did come and apologise and say we would not be charged for the burger. No-one asked if we wanted more drinks, neither was our Gluten Free colleague offered a Gluten Free menu. Eventually we ordered desserts which arrived together but the Sticky Toffee pudding even though in a metal griddle pan was virtually cold - even the icecream didn't melt. By which time we gave up, paid the bill and left. The consensus was that the service was awful, the food not as good as previously and we would not recommend going there again.
A decent place for everyday dining. It was a Sunday and very busy so the noise levels were high. Staff were very helpful and moved us when we asked to go outside as it would quieter. The food was good but not stunning
Food was OK, service was a little slow but pleasant when it came, great location
I had eaten here a couple of years ago and the food was great, however more recently, it didn't match up to the same standard. The pea & courgette burger lacked any flavour of courgette, it was just quite stodgy and the beetroot and goats cheese parcel was very dry and tasted overcooked. The prices don't reflect the quality of the food but aside from that, the staff were lovely and the atmosphere nice, I would skip the food and just come here for drinks instead.
It was fine. But the staff were inattentive and slow, my dad didn't manage to get ketchup and mustard for about 10 minutes after receiving our food. The upstairs room is trendy with lovely views but very loud, wouldn't recommend for a family gathering or special occasion and wouldn't eat their again.
I feel a little unfair about this review - the issue was that we went at the end of a very busy BH weekend and the restaurant and the staff were clearly overwhelmed! Therefore service was patchy and a number of things were missing from the menu. The staff were all friendly and apologetic but it was not quite what I am sure they would normally expect to offer. We enjoyed the location and would give them a second chance in less challenging circumstances.
Enjoyed a lovely lunch with a couple of friends and our kids today. Kids enjoyed the flatbread with tomato & Mozarella. Fish & Chips was good, as was the avocado and poached eggs on toast. Accompanied by a bottle of the French house White which got a thumbs up from the adults. Lovely atmosphere upstairs, all windows open to allow enjoyment of the fine bank holiday weather. Service very good. Will definitely return!
Excellent all round experience, will recommend highly to others!
I booked a table at lighterman after a recommendation for great location for a surprise dinner with close friends to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. We had a great night in our own company but overall I was very disappointed by the service and the food. I understand that it was a very busy Saturday night but a couple of staff members that I dealt with were incredibly rude. I booked weeks ago to avoid any problems and when i explained the situation of surprising my girlfriend I was scoffed at and told to make my way upstairs to find a seat. Service was slow (again understandably) but again staff were short. The balance was way off. We waited quite a bit for drinks but when it came to them waiting on us to decide what to eat it was as if we were a nuisance. Keep in mind we were not in the place long before we decided on our order. Luckily it was a beautiful night with great location to really soak up the amazing weather so food was not as important that night. What I will say though is that the food is overpriced for what you get both in portion and flavour. I ordered the veggie tart which was about the size of a strawberry tart and very bland. £14 isn’t much money but for something that tasted like it was made at school by my niece I really wasn’t too chuffed. Cocktails were fab so I would recommend this place for drinks in the sun with a great location overlooking the canal and granary square
First floor dining is great but it is NOT guaranteed when you book otherwise you are downstairs without views. Decent choice of food and beers, wines were expensive.
Relaxed, pleasant staff and good service. Menue too limited...but sun, balcony and great company makes this a great summer lunching venue. Thank you.
Terrible quality food!!!! Overpriced and poor quality.
Go for drinks and the setting by the canal only!!! Much better options for food in the area.
Was a lovely evening, would recommend.
Absolutely super as usual. Staff were fantastic with my long list of food allergies and I enjoyed some fabulous sea trout :)
My parents were visiting for the day and I booked a meal here before we went to see a theatre show. The food and service was great! Great atmosphere too. Thanks a lot!
Food was very good but restaurant deafening loud and had to shout at friends sitting opposite us. It was exhausting. It was a friday eve and have had much more pleasant quieter lunch there before.
Lovely fish and chips lunch! Great service, good food, wine and beer.
Great location overlooking the canal. We asked for and got a window table.
A good buzz about the place.
Excellent food and wine again but it is the staff that make each visit fun and enjoyable.
I love this restaurant and it never fails to disappoint! Our waitress was wonderful and the food fantastic. My guests said it was the best coffee they'd had in King's Cross - will defintiely be back!
Everything was superb expect the purple broccoli to much garlic and the waitress at the end was giving some rush to leave as we were the last table
One of my favorite restaurant. Great cozy atmosphere, good service, great food. Stone bass and market salad with fish topping was absolutely delicious. And a toffee pudding was divine. If you are not sweet tooth, then I recommend to share between 2 people.
Excellent time! Group of 10 including 2 toddlers and a baby. Fantastic service and so accommodating. Great with the kids.
Plenty of outside space so good for lunch on sunny days. Reasonably priced though not terribly exciting menu. Service good especially since very busy. Not rushed so nice for friends' lunch
We arrived a bit early, however we were able to be seated upstairs, which was lovely.
The waitress took a while to get to us, but drinks then arrived reasonably quickly.
I ordered the steak and ale pie, which was a bit dry. I also wanted peas as the side dish, which arrived with leaks (which were nice, but were not shown as coming with the peas on the menu).
One of my friends has ordered the sweet potato fries, which arrived (after we asked for them on 2 occasions) when we had virtually finished our meal. We told the waiter this and he said he would take them off the bill (which they did), but them took them away.
3 of us had finished, however the waitress cleared our plates before the last person was finished - which I was not impressed with.
HOWEVER - the sticky toffee pudding was stunning.
We pointed out the problem with the fries and the waitress clearing the table prior to us all finishing and the manager took off the cost of the deserts.
Lovely location, great people watching, but I will not rush back.
I booked this place on a whim not knowing anything about it... and I was so blown away. The location was great, the restaurant was beautiful. The food was fantastic and set a fantastic price!! I will definitely be taking all my friends here!
The food was good and the service was great, but the restaurant was very noisy which made it very hard to have a conversation.
Some of the hottest days since the start of the season so understandably packed like sardines which is why I rated the ambience as low. I really wish they would impose better limits on numbers in these places on days like this. It was so full and so loud we could barely hear eachother, sit or even bend over. Forty we had a table booked later in the evening and we finally were able to sit down and eat something in relative comfort and things had calmed somewhat. Added bonus was the host helped us amend our booking to be seated earlier which was fantastic. The waiter was lovely, the food exquisite, I’d definitely like to return for a lunch when less crowded because apart from the throng of after-hours sunshine drinkers, the food was amazing.
This is a great spot for a sunny lunch. Food & drink are pretty good. Service could have done with improvement - we were there on a weekday lunch and had to wait a long time for any attention. Granted, it was busy but that should not be a surprise!
Having been to the Lighterman on numerous occasions previously, I was quite disappointed on this occasion.
Perhaps the fact that it was the first hot, sunny day of the year had something to do with it. However, we were sat downstairs next to the kitchen which meant we didn’t have much of a view. Being a stone’s throw from the bar meant it was extremely noisy and whilst it was nice that the waiting staff didn’t badger us every five minutes, getting service (and the bill) when we did want something, took far longer than it should have.
The food is usually amazing but unfortunately this time round it was just ‘ok’. The chilli squid was far too hot (too much chilli) and the sea bass was over cooked.
The mains were really bad although the starters were alright. The place is also very noisy.
Service was excruciatingly slow. Took 30 mins from sitting down to get a drink on the table. Generally very slow throughout the evening. Glass enclosed dining area made for very noisy experience indeed.
Met with a couple of old work colleagues. Kings X is really handy for all of us now so having eaten at lots of the other restaurants in the area we decided to try The Lighterman. Its always been busy before so i booked well in advance, and you should!
Service was amazing throughout the meal. Food was really lovely. And wine was great, a lovely Picpoul. Wine isn't cheap though so choose carefully.
We were on the first floor and the views are lovely. it was starting to get warmer so this will be a lovely spot in the sunshine.
Thoroughly recommend it.
It was very enjoyable.
The main course was good although the choice was rather limited. The meringue which two of us chose was rather hard but the contents of the pavlova were very good. The service was excellent and the waitress was to be commended.
Very poor service, would not go again. Having reserved a table in advance we were asked to leave within 1.5 hours of arriving (essentially as soon as we had eaten) as they had another reservation for our table in half an hour’s time. There several empty tables around us, as well as outside and downstairs. Not only did they refuse to move the reservation to another table, they refused to move us to an empty table saying these were ‘reserved for walk ins’. The staff were unaccommodating, unhelpful and seemed to be focused on keeping turnover high by kicking people out as soon as they had eaten.
Our first visit to this modern pub was very good. The staff were friendly and efficient. There was a nice range of dishes on the dinner menu, including interesting vegetarian options. The food is good quality with adequate portions. The presentation of cocktails is stylish. The venue is lively and noisy on a Friday night. The river-side location is lovely. You can look out through the glass walls. You can also sit outside for drinks. Overall, a vibrant pub with high standards.
Always great service and great location by the canal with outdoor seating that comes into its own in summer
