It's really, really noisy. Forget a comfortably laid back conversation, think more lively pub in terms of noise level. Views are good and the outside drinking area is ok. Best views from the first floor restaurant, especially the terrace. Service was middle to poor - drinks very, very slow to arrive, and then incorrect when it did arrive (one of them). Food service was better, but so annoying when food/drinks get out of synch.
I have been to The Lighterman a few times for both drinks and dinner and its prime spot on Granary Sq means it is always busy. This time was for Saturday lunch, which draws a mixed crowd and lots of families with children (some very young) so dependant on who you are with I would choose your table carefully. The food was average to good and overall we had a pleasant experience and would go again. I am inclined to see this as a lunch place and not sure about dinner - though we have enjoyed drinks only in the evening. With a couple of beers and a main course each our bill including coffee and service came to about £55. Their other restaurant Percy an Founders in Fitzrovia is another step up food wise (and price) and also worth a visit.
Food OK, issue with burger bun so asked for it to be returned. Exchanged without fuss however no offer to take the other meal away (girlfriend finished before it reappeared), no complimentary drink, no geniune apology.
Not great at that price point, it is not cheap.

Nice food and good ambience. The service was OK and to be fair it was very busy.
Appalling! I would love to be able to review the food, however, we never actually got any! Rude staff, terrible service and the fact they were unable to serve us any food – considering our table was booked for 8.00pm – is simply disgraceful! Simply put...don’t bother!!!
Great when the suns shining as lots of outdoor seating. Food is very nice, service a little slow
I went for a catch up with a friend it also happened to be my birthday and they decorated my dessert.
The service was fantastic
Thank you I will definately come back
Lovely evening. As it was so hot they brought a big glass of ice to the table without being asked and considering how busy they were the service was great. Food was lovely and with all the windows open it's a lovely setting overlooking the canal
Superb venue in a wonderfully designed open modern building overlooking the square and canal. Great for sun downers. Food menu is pretty basic but good and the service just basic, staff are pleasant though. Perhaps gets so busy on sunny days they can’t cope. Still the venue and ambience makes up for it. Lovely venue and would go again.
It was disappointing. Having requested an outside table on a very hot evening, it turns out that they can’t be booked in advance and we had to sit in a very hot, noisy restaurant. Until we mentioned the request, they had totally ignored it and even turned down our request to have a window table as they were apparently booked by others. Regardless of the fact that we had actually booked in advance! The food was ok but overpriced, as was the wine and the menu was limited. On the plus side, our waiter was very good - attentive and friendly.
Great setting. We had an upstairs table on a lovely warm evening. The glass and light were lovely. Service was relaxed but efficient. Food was good, not exceptional. They do a great job on a large number of covers. Buzzy place to go with friends.
Great table on upper floor terrace good canal side & Granary Square side location
Very good friendly staff
Great ambience excellent cocktails & drinks menu
Great to talk no LOUD music
Buzzy atmosphere delicious food was really well presented and great menu choices catering for all tastes definitely go again!
The waitress was fairly rude and blunt with a very dismissal tone when taking orders. Food was average.
food and service very good but ambient noise levels are so high it is very difficult to have a conversation within a group; also as there are no blinds sunlight shone directly at eye level for those of us facing west making it difficult to see other members of the group.
both problems could be mitigated by carpets/curtains/insulation on the ceiling
Plenty of space, great food and wine menu and nice staff. They did tend to forget about us on occasion, but for the most part the service was good. I would recommend for large groups because of how big he restaurant is. I would also recommend the Sunday roasts!
Not worth the price. Poor service, waiting over an hour for food, no apology for clearly forgetting our order. Half the ordered items never showed.
The staff were very accommodating in getting us a great table with a view for a special dinner (the meeting of our parents). Service was really friendly and the food was good. Would highly recommend for location, value and atmosphere!
We were asked to give our table back after two hours with no prior warning and still 2/3rds of a bottle of wine to drink (and dessert!). Had to insist that they found us a new one rather than sit outside in the cold. Make sure you ask about this at the beginning of the meal
We got served the wrong bottle of wine which we should have recognised when we tasted I suppose
The food all just comes with a portion of chips. Was expecting something a bit more like a 'proper' meal with my chicken breast. Make sure you know what you're ordering!
The location is what makes this place so good. When we went for a Friday night dinner with friends, everything else was all a bit average - food, service, value - were all unremarkable. Nothing awful, but nothing that impressive either. Super noisy too - lots of hard surfaces that amplify the sounds of the other diners. I've been here for lunch and it was much, much better.
Great atmosphere, fab location. Staff were really attentive and friendly - food was delicious.
Good food, great service, nice views everything was just right
We arrived on a VERY hot day and the staff were very helpful and ensured we relocated to a reasonably cool table - upstairs in the balcony in the shade where there was a breeze. Thank you.
Great location, we had a table upstairs at the edge of the restaurant/balcony which provided a welcome breeze on a very hot evening. Food was good, service good too until we struggled to find our waiter to pay the bill!
Great food. But little air circulating through which made the experience uncomfortable . It was about 32c outside . In spite of open windows, air didn’t circulate and I wiped my face often !!! It gets increasingly noisy. But I love the location . Food was energetic and tasty .
All good, but service rather slow, there didn't seem to be quite enough staff.
Tasty food, as always. Good service. Lovely venue:light and breezy on a very hot day. Relaxed atmosphere - no rush.
Excellent meal and service, the view was exquisite.
Nice place and food but unfortunately spoilt by the slow service.
Have been many times, and the service is friendly but a bit slow. Waiters were just stood around chatting and we were sat with our food menus for longer than we'd have liked. Never normally disappointed with the food in terms of quality, and wasn't on this occasion either however was very let down that you'd run out of roast potatoes! (And failed to let us know until you served us the food, so we couldn't even change our choice. The vegetarian pie was really nice though. Overall a bit disappointing and would make me think twice about coming on a Sunday.
Amazing ambiance, views & sevice & food was exceptional
Lovely spot by the canal which feels quiet from the hustle and bustle of london. Service was a hit on the slow side but we didn’t mind as it gave us a chance to have a leisurely brunch. The stop servicing doors between 11 and 1 so bear that I’m mind. Also the drinks were a bit pricey.
Great place for breakfast, good location in new smart part of town
The place looks the part but service very slow and it’s very overpriced food was ok .
Staff do not seem to work as a team and it’s like they are doing you a favour
If your looking for a large meal this probably isn't the place to go but if you want something to fill you up or a business lunch that allows you to go home and have dinner without feeling to guilty this is the place. The setting is great, the service is great and your not sitting on top of each other.
This turned out to be the perfect place for three old friends to meet up and have a major 'catch up' while enjoying the food, the ambiance and the views. We were well looked after by the staff and would visit again. I live locally and will add it to my list of good places to meet up with friends coming from outside London as it is easily accessible from several mainline stations and, therefore, airports.
The food was very disappointing as were the drinks. Our waitress forgot part of our order and it came after we had ate. Noone thanked us for our custom and when I gave my thanks as leaving, I was ignored. Very unimpressed.
A lovely evening having dinner on the roof terrace. We had great food and great service. It was recommended by a friend and lived up to the expectations. Defo worth a visit!
Everything was very good apart from service that has one main drawback: waitresses dont let you take your time but they speed up the process. If you are lookig for a relaxed lunch/dinner then this should be excluded.
Every time I come, maitre’d at front of house is exceptional. Friendly and efficient
Nice space, interesting menu, moderate prices. No brunch menu, only breakfast or lunch. Good portions. Slightly underwhelmed by service; hostesses and waiting staff had forced smiles; looked irritated at having to explain we couldn’t go upstairs until midday. Made some enquiries about one food option- waitress wasn’t able to offer any suggestion. Cocktails well prepared aesthetically, but fruit was sour. May or may not go back, weather-depending.
