What Insiders Are Saying
The Lighterman is a British restaurant in Kings Cross that’s good for sitting on the canal with a drink and a snack.
A really great meal, the service was really friendly and they kept bringing more tap water whenever we ran out. The quality of the food was excellent and for a group of 7 of us the food was also served in good time. There is a great selection of drinks, especially wine and the food was all well cooked. I would definitely recommend for a meal out with friends.
It was very friendly and the food was good. There was a slight mistake with the order but it was corrected very speedily. Really attentive but not overbearing services.
Thanks for providing a lovely lunch.
Our mains got forgotten about and we waited over a hour for our food and then the food was not piping hot. We did get money off our bill but was disappointing none the less
Sadly this time the food let us down. Pork belly for main was more a starter portion. We mentioned to waitress as we had eaten this in the summer when portion was a decent size and were told people had complained it was too much!! Really,?
Was rammed as Christmas so couldn't fault the friendly service but overall food not amazing
Arrived 15 minutes early, asked if our table was ready. I was reminded that the booking was at 6 not 5:45. When being taken to our table upstairs at 6, we found the restaurant almost empty!
Ordering was good, however food was mediocre. As a regular London restaurant goer, I found the food underwhelming and extremely expensive given the quality.
The atmosphere was interesting, the music choice was repetitive electronic music in an already chatter field environment. It became extremely annoying.
I would suggest going to the German Gymnasium! Same prices and far better quality and quantity.
Food, location and views were great. Only disappointing part of the meal was that the waitress forgot a few parts of our order and we were rushed to leave after 1hr 30mins even though we were supposed to have the table for 2hrs - it wasn’t even like they were extremely busy, there were a lot of tables empty. Overall 7/10 and despite average service food was great.
Really fantastic food - the venison pie was literally one of the best pies I’ve ever tasted! Recommended for high quality, British dining and an excellent drink selection.
Great atmosphere, Lovely food, great service. But like all london venues, pricey.
Second time here, food is great, service (on this second occasion was outstanding. Its a lively (read noisy) place so don't go for a quiet, cosy time. And its dog-friendly - which isn't a tick box on open table. Why not?
Great food, great location, too expensive and too noisy
Menu is so promising but every course was dull and mediocre. Even the home made coffee ice cream was poor. The menu suggested so many lovely things at significant prices. So absolutely disappointing and NOT WORTH IT - especially having been to Native in London Bridge thus evening. Similar price, WAY better and truly interesting food and lovely staff. Go to Native instead! You'll still have change for the taxi back and have enjoyed a delightful meal.
Lovely food, great service, one of my favourite places to eat.
Wonderful setting but staff struggling with the numbers and the food - beef burger - had obviously been cooked a while ago and kept under a heat lamp or reheated. it was dry, tasteless and overcooked as was the piece of bacon. how hard is it to serve up a fresh hamburger?
Great location and live the decor. Quite chilly with people in and out of the smoking areas. Very busy so service a little slow but friendly and great food.
Service was rude and demanding, won’t be rushing back
Thank you to the Lighterman for a great night with a friend visiting from Scotland. Accommodated my request I made via my online booking for a seat overlooking the canal.
Service, ambience, location all very good.
Starters were fine. Trifle excellent and cheese good.
Main course, fish and Asian slaw, was very disappointing. The fish was dry. The slaw was just horrible - no Asian flavours but a sort of gritty, whitish, porridge that was apparently made of red cabbage and tasted very peculiar. I could not begin to guess what was in it.
Great Sunday evening roasts. Friendly and helpful staff and nice canal views. Slight expensive on the expensive side.
Enjoyed my visit for brunch at the Lighterman with two friends on Sunday morning. The food was excellent and good value for money with decent portion sizes. The staff were neither friendly nor unfriendly so for this reason I felt the service could have been better considering the 12.5% automatically added as service. I would recommend this restaurant however.
Beautiful food in a lovely place
Been to the Lighterman a few times and was never overly impressed, usually just convenient for the time. This time however, the food was fantastic for just everyday dining. The ambiance always feels a bit flat and commercial especially upstairs, but the food and service made up for it. Surprisingly impressed.
A great experience, just a bit noisy! But looking forward to a return visit.
Had a great evening. Burges were out this world. I do not like burges. Paulo was great.
Such an amaizing place.
Only negative it took me ages to get a drink at the bar.
Decent gastropub menu, not cheap but good waiting staff and prompt service made it feel a bit more upmarket than a Drake &Morgan-style establishment. We had steaks and pork belly which were both pretty good. Relaxed and friendly place, good for catching up with friends.
Have visited this restaurant a few times, but the standard of food is definitely dropping. Mat not visit again!
The view from upstairs as the sun goes down and the trees and fountains light up is magical. Food, wine and service were excellent. We settled in for the afternoon and a delicious, leisurely Sunday lunch.
A lovely visit to meet family. The waiter was from Madrid and very knowledgeable.
He was very helpful in choosing a bottle of red and we selected a delicious new white.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere, light and spacious, not too noisy despite being busy, pleasant staff, delicious Sunday lunch (especially the roast beef). Booked in advance for a group of 6 and got a nice table by the window looking onto Granary Square. All in all very civilised and enjoyable, would recommend!
The portion size was excellent for the price, and the food/drinks came very quickly. Fantastic, friendly and speedy service from the staff, they even offered to store my friend’s suitcase which was very thoughtful.
I attended the Lighterman on Saturday with three friends. My friends meal arrived slightly tepid and the way it was handled was extremely professional, no fuss was made they cooked her a new meal and gave her a dessert on the house. The other three meals were perfect. We each had a spiced bean cocktail which was out of this world!! Highly recommendable... Looking forward to returning.
Great service. We were only supposed to have the table for a couple of hours but the staff managed to arrange for us stay on as we were having such a good time.
Service was fantastic and they didn’t rush us which was lovely. We had a light lunch of their topped flatbreads which were delicious.
The tables are very close together though and although some have a view we were in the middle of the restaurant with people very close to us.
Great food not fazed by my extreme coeliac issues excellent service
A great find. Close to Central St Martins. Welcoming. Great service. Good food. Well priced.
The food at the lighterman was lovely, but the staff were not friendly, we were joined by an extra person which was made into a very big deal and we ended up going elsewhere
Nice venue but poor customer service by waiters. Kept trying to take our plates away even though we hadnt finished our food.
Cool restaurant space upstairs. Good salad choices.
I have regular lunch meetings with my ex Chairman at The Lightetman. I travel down from Doncaster at it is very convenient. The ambience is perfect.
I have been to this place a few times and it is always really good. Food is amazing and you have such a variety of options. But the most important is that staff does care about the restaurants guests. Great job! and I will definitely be back!
