What Insiders Are Saying
The Lighterman is a British restaurant in Kings Cross that’s good for sitting on the canal with a drink and a snack.
Had a delightful lunch for my birthday. Staff were very friendly, service was excellent and the food was delicious. Nice to find they had Nikka Whiskey on the menu for afters!
Lovely interiors. Charming place with fantastic view. Sunday lunch was delicious!
Service was a bit slow.
The tuna steak was overdone (we ordered pink) and was sat atop at least 2 day old chopped cucumber and tomato (devoid of texture (unless you count mushy - which I don’t) and colour and taste). The terrace in the sunshine is lovely to enjoy a glass of wine or a cold beer - but I definitely would not eat there again. Really disappointing as it is in a great location. Staff were friendly but service was generally slow.
Lovely venue, great food & service. Would definitely return & recommend.
Great view. Nice atmosphere. Food really poor and expensive. A shame.
Nice location and reasonably priced wine menu. The second floor terrace is 🙌🏻🙌🏻.
Service was great, and listened to my additional requests. Execution was perfect.
Food was incredible, service SHOCKING. Great selection and Eton Mess was superb. The only big let down was the service. So many people just floating about with absolute no idea what day of the week it even is. To have to ask to order a drink, order our starters then ask to order our mains. Felt like we where such an inconvenience.
Really nice for a casual night out in a great location. The food was fine but, I’ll probably return just for a drink as the food didn’t compare to other restaurants nearby. Felt the food (or choice) let it down. However, we all had a nice evening and none went hungry. Starters were better than the mains.
VERY NOISY. We were sat upstairs, great views, good food and good service, But even trying to hear what the person opposite you was saying was difficult. This was on a Weds evening. With all the glass, hard flooring, hard tables and chairs, theirs nothing that's softening the sound. They really should put soft furbishing in to deaden the sound, as it is just way too noisy when busy.
The venue is gorgeous and setting is lovely overlooking Granary Square. Loads of tables outside and on the balcony upstairs.
The food was ok - for the price I would say not quite up to what it should be though.
The service sadly was terrible (not by the staff) but the time taken for us to get food. Bread and butter took 30 minutes to come out, then about 45 minutes - 1 hour for the mains. Really not good enough for a Tuesday night & fairly punchy prices.
God service, food and setting spoiled by appalling acoustic. We had to yell to hear each other.
We shared the steak with two sides, and a bottle of red wine-both of which were recommended by our waiter and both were fab.
Usually love The Lighterman, but food arrived cold for the second time in as many months. On our previous visit we informed the staff, who were quick to reorder our roasts. However our replacements were also cold, and with two young kids in tow sending our mains back for a third time was out of the question so we sucked it up.
This visit to have the roast come out cold again was beyond disappointing, we expect more for the price. We didn’t have time to send it back, and as they were replaced with cold dishes last time we didn’t see the point.
Hope we’ve just been really unlucky, but won’t be ordering the roast again that’s for sure!
The lamb lollipops were absolutely amazing. Our waiter was attentive and fun, and not at all overbearing. A wonderful dining experience for our last meal in Europe before returning home to America.
I've been to The Lighterman a couple of times now and whilst the venue and ambience are good, the service and food are vastly overrated.
Waiting staff aren't helpful and have a real attitude problem; it gets super noisy to the point that you can't really hear your fellow diners across the table; and the food is mediocre at best.
Definitely one where they are playing on their location to deliver an average service all round.
Great atmosphere in a really vibrant location. Food was superb as were the staff, really friendly.
Have eaten at TLM maybe 5-6 times. It has always been excellent. Good food and staff and a nice ambience. Good beers. Am not sure what happened this time around however it was a bit of a disastrous meal. No waiter for first 15 mins. Slow drinks, missing the vintages of wine for all the wine we ordered. Then a glass was accidentally smashed on our food. It genuinely felt like a comedy of errors. Food good as normal when they had remade our meals. So I think they were having an all round shocker of an evening (it was rammed). When the bill came they were superb. Without us even having to ask, they acknowledged what had gone wrong and generously adjusted the bill. We were all pleasantly surprised at the proactive recovery and it would make us all go back. As at the top, it is a very good place that I enjoy every time, this was a one off but so well recovered I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend and will continue to visit.
Very very load and noisy
Food and service was good, but incredibly hard to communicate with all the noise
It’s a very nice place by the canal. We had a great time and the food was good. I had the veggie burger and others at the table had the fish and chips, and the steak (which was a little bit over cooked). My burger was really nice! The bill was quite pricy, we ended up paying a bill of nearly £200 for 5 people - we had 1 drink each (only two of us orderer the second drink), a starter to share between all of us, and a main each. But the price includes the location as well, so we were expecting to pay more than a regular pub.
Expensive - wine served warm had to ask for ice..... hustled out. Service v average - lovely setting but that’s all.
Food is delicious, great menu. Front desk staff are unfriendly, and waiting staff are very confrontational but the food makes up for this. Restaurant is very noisy when it gets busy.
We liked that they were aware of the reservation and made no fuss in changing our table to one on the top floor. The chicken roast was lovely but the starters and drinks are pricey for what they are. Nice views of the square from the top floor and comfortable chairs and nice decor. We would like to see more choice on the menu though and a childrens menu.
Great atmosphere. Very busy. Lovely being along the canals. Food good. Will definitely recommend it to friends.
Went for the Sunday roast with a friend before she caught her train at Kings X.
Roasts had masses of food, really good value for money! Staff were attentive and friendly even though it was busy. Great touch was that there was room to store suitcases behind front desk.
Hi - I booked here for brunch on Sunday only to be told there was only a lunch menu (I'm sure I'd been for brunch before...?). Anyway I ordered the Caesar Salad with sweet potato fries. when it arrives the sweet potato fries were cold and had to be replaced. The salad was mostly brown (some leaves totally - no way the chef didn't notice!), and the croutons were totally over fried, black and hard - inedible. To be fair, when I complained the manager was very sorry and didn't charge for the salad. I have been for brunch before and it was brilliant, but this was a real let down, more so because the chef obviously knew it was unacceptable before it went out. Also my friend asked for a poached egg with her flat bread and was told there was no way she could get this (she offered to pay for it!!!) - but I had a poached egg on my salad, so no idea why she couldn't have one as well?
The food was poor and overpriced and it’s too loud. Setting by the canal lovely.
That mozzarella burger is to die for, I would request it on death row!
The first floor restaurant has glass sides, and on a warm evening is like sitting in a greenhouse. I know it has been a hot week, but it is often warm in the Summer, and as you have no air conditioning it should not have been beyond the realms of someone's imagination to buy a few fans. The staff were polite and helpful - bringing us lots of water and ice - and the food was good, but unfortunately the heat made it a totally unpleasant experience.
I have been here a few times while I am in London. It is wonderful restaurant near Kong’s cross in Granary Square. However this time was an exceptional experience. We were moved to an outside table on terrace. The weather was warm but the breeze was amazing. The view of the water features, people and sunset was wonderful. The service was terrific and the food is delicious. I highly recommend - my friend and I had a wonderful evening.
For the most part we really enjoyed our meal here. Good selection of choices on the menu and all felt good value for money. The only downside was no where on the menu did it say the salmon is normally cooked medium rare, and when a pregnant member of our party ordered it they didn't point this out to her, and then made her feel bad when it came and she asked for it be cooked through more.
It would have been 5 stars for everything but my fathers pork dish was very dry. We did mention it to the waiter but after we had finished so didn’t expect him to be able to do anything but it’s a shame when all the other food was very high quality.
The service is always excellent and my 7 month baby was well accommodated for.
Lovely place to be on a hot summer's day. Staff were helpful and friendly and the food was good. I'd go back
The service was a little slow but this was made up for by the friendly staff and the setting.
Didn’t make it very special for our occasion. Food was outstanding... open air, no AC, so on a hot night you bake in sun...impacted our experience
Good, great service, nice vibe and very light and spacious upstairs terrace. I will be back.
Lovely atmosphere, with a great outside dining space. Try the Sunday Roast.. I dare you! It was gorgeous.
Beautiful terrace on a nice day. Inside can be abit too noisy so if the weather is nice the terrace is the place to be. Beautiful views from the terrace. Food is great!... drinks could do with a refresh but cannot be too harsh.
It’s a lovely building but the menu was really quite uninspired & given the fact that our main meal arrived undercooked & has to be returned,I wouldn’t go back .
The staff seemed sarcastic towards us which really made us feel uncomfortable too .
A great summer venue in buzzing Granary Square with good food and friendly staff.
