About

This restaurant is permanently closed. The Lion at Leavenheath is a family run business that was purchased in 2013. Since our takeover we have been working hard to put The Lion back to its former glory.
With the team in the kitchen producing superb fresh food using local produce and supplier such as J Coleman's butchers in Boxted supplying all of our quality meats.
As for the bar we stock a good range of wines to accompany your meal as well as draft lagers and rotational real ales from the good local breweries we have in the area.

The Lion at Leavenheath does it again, lovely birthday celebration and everyone's meal was fabulous - all tastes catered for (incl great vegan options). Nice atmosphere and quiet in the dining area for the oldies. Friendly and welcoming service. We feel like family.

We had a lovely meal, just 4 of us. The choices were good, service was good, our food was hot. Lovely surroundings and a nice place to have a drink and chat.

This was one of several opportunities I had to dine at the Lion at Leavenheath while over from Australia visiting family. I highly recommend it for excellent food, attentive service and friendly and cosy atmosphere. I am vegan and the choice was extensive and delicious. Took several lots of friends and family over the time I was staying and they all had a great meal and loved the beautiful dining room. This is the kind of place you could have a romantic dinner, a fun lunch with friends or a formal celebratory evening. I look forward to my next visit.

Always made feel welcomed and looked after very well. Food very good. Just needs some updating to the restaurant flooring as carpet in a poor state.

This was our first visit to the Lion - we have tried other venues locally. The staff were very welcoming and willing to please. The experience was worth the trip from south of Colchester, we will be back.

Thank you!

So pleased with our meal and both being vegan was so impressed with vegan menu and quality of food! We felt we were not a second thought as with many places we have visited and that care had been taken over the vegan menu,
We will be booking again for sure
Also we were welcomed warmly and service was spot on
Thank you

The vegan taster menu on the evening that I went was absolutely first class. The management is friendly and obliging. It was excellent value for money. The chef has obviously put a lot of thought and creatively into his vegan food options. I have eaten here several times and have always been more than pleased with the food and ambiance. I hope that the Lion continues to do well and look forward to coming to the next vegan taster evening .

The choice and quality of gluten free food was excellent, as was the customer service. If we lived closer we would definitely be regulars.

Not a good experience- food took 45 mins to arrive- onion rings were cold / bread buns burned black / and sweet potato fries forgotten !

Inside this building there's a surprise- it's a hidden gem! Doesn't look much from the outside decor and you could easily drive past, but don't! Give it a try- Fabulous food, excellent service, we go back time and again. Never disappointed.

I took my parents & 3 year old for lunch as a thank you. My mother is a coeliac so the gluten free menu was perfect & my son's cheeseburger from the child menu was "yummy"! It was quiet in the restaurant but we had a very enjoyable lunch. We all then returned 2 days later with a vegan who was well catered for & we ate outside in the sunshine. Gary, who served us both times, was extremely friendly & was great with my son. Apparently we have to take Daddy next time, so it looks like we'll be back!

Disappointed with the standard of food for the money. Caesar salad was chicken on lettuce but had no taste, the beef was tough and Yorkshire pudding flat, limited fish and vegetarian options. The service and surroundings were very good however.

We had Sunday lunch here last week. It was the 3rd time we have been in 2017 and the food and service have been consistently good. We skipped starters (as two of the party are pudding lovers), but the menu was varied and the mains and desserts were very good. The main dining area is far more attractive than you would give the building credit for (when viewed from the outside) and the ambience was good. Recommended.

We went to the Lion with a 50 percent off smart voucher and for that price it was good value. The food was ok but nothing to write home about. I had Thai fish cakes which were more English than Thai but not unpleasant then a stir fry veg dish which was a little soggy. My husband enjoyed his fish and chips . It was chilly and I didn't take my coat off. So ok but nothing special. The location and building is nice and our waiter was charming. So nothing bad just nothing exceptional. I would return at 50 percent off but not at full price.

On our first visit we had a lovely experence, food was perfect and service, price was average. On our second visit I cannot say the same , very disappointed food was not up to scratch meat was very fatty, on telling the waitress who said 'I will tell the manage' nothing more was done.
We had praised the restaurant beforehand to our family so we had made a special journey with relatives only to be let down.

Although it was a quiet mid week meal the atmosphere was still good at The Lion. There was an extensive gluten free menu for myself which was great as so many other places are limited. The service was very good, we were not rushed but neither left for ages. I would definitely recommend and will return myself.

We primarily booked for the gluten free and were not disappointed. A varied range of gluten free foods available including a choice of delectable deserts instead of the usual fruit salads and meringue. Also gluten free bread served whilst waiting for starter so you don't feel left out when other people are tucking into bread with oil and balsamic dip. It was nice to be made to feel 'normal' and not a difficult customer. The standard and quality of all the food, not just gluten free was exceptional and the service was friendly and helpful. We would have no hesitation in recommending The Lion to our friends and will definitely be back ourselves. Thank you.

We loved the cosy restaurant and our waiter Gary was very attentive and very charming.
The choice of food was great and we shared a reasonable priced bottle of Merlot.
We both enjoyed our date night at the Lion.
Will definitely be back.
