The Maids Head Wicken
Chair’s were totally uncomfortable and back broken.
Prawn cocktail was not prawns but shrimp tasteless too much pepper.
Scampi was ok chips unable to eat as under cooked again too much pepper in salad no cucumber or tomato.
We are local and we brought with us family members who live in the West Country and who were visiting us that day. We all had something different and we all enjoyed what we had. It was nicely presented, tasted good and had a more unusual mix of vegetables/salad/sauces as accompaniment. The ambiance was nice and our visitors commented on it. It was very quiet when we we arrived but got a bit more noisy by the time we had finished but there was a party of about ten near to us. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.
Food was nice but waited for too long to receive it and main meal was cold, arrived 6.30 and left at 9pm and when you have 2 children with you,was too long!
Good variety of food freshly cooked. Friendly service.
A great traditional pub. We had a great lunch there on Easter Sunday. Great food, good service and lovely location close to National Trust.
We visited the Maids Head in Wicken on Good Friday to celebrate my Grandson’s 11th Birthday. He had especially asked to go to this particular venue, because he had previously enjoyed the ‘Fish and Chips’. They did not disappoint, the staff made him feel very special, with a happy birthday banner to welcome us and a prepared dessert complete with birthday candle, all ready for a celebratory rendition of Happy Birthday. Good food and thoughtful staff made this experience a memorable one. Many thanks to the staff at ‘ The Maids Head’ I would defiantly recommend a visit.
Excellent food and service. We will definitely go back there.
All six of our group had a roast dinner at 5.30 on Mothers Day. The meat content was fine and tasty. We had three small roast potatoes each, which had clearly been cooked hours before and either re heated or microwaved, they had a stale taste. The 'fresh veg selection' comprised of a huge pile of carrots and one floret of cauliflower cheese. The Yorkshire pud was soggy and had been around for hours.
It was a shame because we had lunch the day before and it was very nice, as is the pub in general and the staff. We clearly suffered with the dregs of the mass cooking for Mothers Day.
I hope it was a one off poor performance, because it seems a nice pub.
Food and service excellent as usual and a very pleasant atmosphere ... perfect for a catch up chat with a friend - thank you.
Good value food, good service, cosy setting but open fire a bit smokey and bar next door a bit shouty for a Sunday afternoon.
Service was excellent, the food that we chose was delivered hot and was very enjoyable, the only disappointment was that on the website it shows a lite bites menu, however I was told this was not available and the website had not been updated.
Sunday Lunch perfectly cooked, good portions, plenty of vegetables, hot & a lovely meal.
Lacked a little atmosphere but then we were early lunch so one cannot expect it to have a lot this time of year
Waited an hour then food wasn't hot, the waitress offered to take it to heat, but didn't want roast potatoes and Yorkshire put in the microwave.
The third time I and a friend have been to The Maids Head and each time the venue has proved to be just what we were looking for. It has easy access with car parking, It provided just the place for comfortably chatting over a fairly well drawn out lunch. The service was friendly and without hassle, the ambience good. The menu was sufficiently varied to be attractive although a couple of items were unavailable on this occasion. I particularly enjoyed the cheese coated Hunters Chicken Breast with sweet potato fries and salad garnish. I will go again.
Great location, but poor food and very poor service. Waited an hour for any food, and when it arrived it was Yorkshire puddings from a packet and two poorly cooked and very average sausages. Not great I’m afraid.
Unfortunately, the restaurant was busy and I suspect that our order fell out of the system - a couple of tables that arrived after us were served first. As a result, we waited more than an hour for food. Very disappointing as we have previously enjoyed good meals at the restaurant. To management's credit, a discount was applied to the overall bill but I would advise people to go early or late.
Fantastic food , friendly staff , really nice atmosphere and attention to detail which made for a very pleasant valentines meal
The food was good, plenty of variety. Only downside was the cold air coming through the door to the toilets and people did not seem to manage to shut the door.
We sought this venue out as an ideal meeting point with friends to exchange xmas gifts and have a nice lunch and drink. The venue was ideal, easy parking, excellent service, nice cosy fire and not too busy so we could talk, not chased out once the meal was finished and stayed over 3 hours eating, drinking (not all alcohol - had coffees too!).
We could make this an annual meet up point - close to some good walking venues too (wicken fen).
We enjoyed our meals on Boxing Day lunchtime although we were kept waiting sometime for our food to arrive.
i took friends here for a boxing day dinner. we had to wait approx 1hour for our meal, starters came about 2o mins before main meal. Christmas dinner was not what we expected, would not recommend for a seasonal meal
Great Sunday Lunch! You could also have 2 or 3 meats if you couldnt decide which was a great touch. The bread and butter pudding for dessert was amazing. Everything was home cooked and tasted great, we will definitely be going back!
Lovely pub great character good food reasonably priced. Friendly staff good service. Will be back again soon.
The ambience is good , nice log fire , pleasant staff and a typical pub style menu .
It seemed to take ages to take the food order and for it to be delivered and yet the pub was not filled to capacity . We had starters which were excellent , 3 of the main courses were good but lasagne was awfull . From sitting down to the service of the main course was 1 hour 15 minuites , we did have a starter but it still seems excessive .
Very nice open fire in eating area, nice and peaceful and food and service was very good
Called in for Sunday lunch & service & food was great, would highly recommend.
Nice lunch menu but for me the sticky toffee pudding wasn't sticky enough!
On our recent visit, it was so sad to see a once thriving pub restaurant reduced to all the levels that would forecast its doom, for our experience was classic of this type of establishments standards of years ago before the revival started. With respect I would recommend the current management took a course in hospitality and the employment of a competent chef, in hopes that just these two attributes would bring the Maids Head back to its former glory, where a visit was enjoyable and one had to make a reservation to ensure a table. I trust the current management will think deeply about my comments and not bury their heads in the sand.
I’m sorry but the food was awful. One of my party was poorly the next day. Most of the dinner on all plates was left. Nobody asked why; if there was problem. Dessert however was nice. Haven’t been here for years. It was good then hence the booking. The restaurant was almost empty and for a Friday evening that spoke volumes..
Very good food. Younger waiting staff need more training
our experience of the Maids Head was poor compared to how it used to be. of the three meals we ordered
all had faults. the fried fish was soggy, the Yorkshire was burnt. and the turkey was sliced with the skin and gristle mixed in. All of our previous visits had been great standard. considering only a small number of tables were occupied perhaps this should have been an early warning. yours very disappointing A C Hall
We decided on Friday 12 that we wanted to go out for lunch on a rare Saturday off for me and chose The Maids Head at Wicken . It was a great meal, great service, lovely setting and very relaxing and very welcoming.
Would recommend lunch to family and friends
Brilliant food and friendly staff . We were staying locally in a pod overnight ready for our Countryfile ramble the next day in Ely . I found the pub on trip advisor and had goood reviews . It was great.
The website describes this as a gastropub, but I am afraid that on the basis of our visit it really isn't. Fairly standard pub grub, and reasonable quality and value. Service was friendly and speedy. Salad rather watery/tasteless. Also, I could have done without the music emanating from the kitchen.
Local Gastro Pub, welcoming, good choice of food options, well presented, and tasty. Noise from the bar can be a little intrusive, but a excellent visit and would go again.
The only reason that I did not give 5 stars for food was because the roast potatoes were a slight let down to what my wife and I agreed would have been the best Sunday lunch we have had out. The cooking/quality of the beef in particular was absolutely outstanding. The service was polite and very helpful, we enjoyed our time at your venue very much and would recommend to anyone.
A very enjoyable evening - great food, friendly service and comfortable atmosphere - just what we needed to catch up with an old friend. Thank you.
A nice little cottage for the perfect meal in a true British setting
Had a great time. We have the Sunday roast. The beef was cooked to perfection and the rest of the roast was of high standard. The service was brilliant. Overall we enjoyed the meal and setting
