The Marlborough Tavern
Food is essentially, though not slavishly, English in character and takes advantage of locally sourced produce wherever possible. Its food reputation is matched by their service - always friendly and attentive without being intrusive, and there's an extensive wine list and selection of local ales to choose from. The Marlborough's pub garden is arguably Bath’s finest; a walled courtyard space, that’s perfect for summertime lunching and drinking.
Travelled over 80 miles to stay in Bath for a reunion with former associates. We had dinner there for the first time, having previously enjoyed lunch several times. The place (always) has a great buzz to it and the manager Callum and server Caitlin looked after us very well indeed. We all enjoyed our food, in particular the sirloin that was perfectly cooked. A very good choice of wine also led to a super evening. Thanks to the team there and we hope to see you again soon.
My wife and I have been to the Marlborough Tavern many times in previous years when we have visited Bath. In fact it had been recommended to us by friends who live in the area, and up until now we have thoroughly enjoyed the food and ambience. This time was completely different. I wanted to book a table for 8pm on Sunday evening we were coming with my cousin and his wife to visiting from Canada. But I could only get a reservation for 7.45, which was ok. We were running a few minutes late so I tried to call the pub to let them know. It took five attempts before anyone answered - only to be told I needed to hurry as the kitchen closed at 8pm. We arrived just after 8. The place was practically empty - I had never seen it so quiet. A few of the starters snd mains were off the Sunday menu leaving us with a limited choice. The roast beef was actually a lump of steak. We asked for more gravy and were eventually brought a soup bowl of gravy but no spoon. All in all a throughly disappointing experience with average food and service. I felt embarrassed as I had been telling my relatives how great the Marlborough Tavern was - and quite frankly it was a letdown and I’m not surprised it was empty. We didn’t hang around, and I certainly won’t be going back again.
Very happy to recommend the Marlborough Tavern. It is good food at a reasonable price. However, the noise level is too high.
Excellent food and service as they were very busy, would definitely go back.
Great food, great venue, would certainly recommend and will return again soon I’m sure.
The atmosphere is absolutely lovely in the Marlborough Tavern. I would thoroughly recommend this pub. Just a note though, the menu online was different to the one in the pub which was a little disappointing as the online menu had a dish I really liked the sound of. Having said that the food was good but the sauce on the fish dish was too spicy/hot for me. Atmosphere great!
Unexpected pleasure! Burger was amazing!
Bloody hell, this was good! Probably the best roast I’ve ever had (recommend the lamb). We had a bottle of wine, dessert wine and pudding so it was a bit on the pricey side in the end but such a treat and can’t fault any of it. Can’t wait to go back - thank you!!
Food never disappoints
Service was under par and not aligned to the quality or price point despite being lots of staff around.
One of the best pub dinners I've had!
A favourite for many years, we will be back, but not based on our last meal. Whilst delicious, the service was unusually poor. After waiting over an hour for our starters we were told they were about to be prepared and would be deducted from the final bill. A nice gesture, but our guests from New Zealand not impressed. The mains took ages too. Perhaps our table number was between service areas and fell into a gap? Also, a bit frustrated that the wine we ordered was a final bottle so when we asked for a second we had to change wines. Oh well... I'm sure just an aberration and all previous experiences have been much better.
Consistently good! Friendly team and good food. We will visit again ...
We had dinner at the tavern on Tuesday evening this week. We found your young dynamic team a joy to watch carrying out their work with politeness and professionalism ...they were a breath of fresh air.
We very much enjoyed the menu..I had the goats cheese starter and it was the best I have ever tasted.
Well done to all your team and keeping this standard up for all of us to enjoy. JohnPickett Bath.
Great for a relaxed time with friends eating delicious food
Absolutely lovely sunday lunch.
Staff were very accommodating and helpful
I have visited this and associated restaurants many times, and always left happy, however on this occasion the lack of availability of first options on the menu was poor (and not advised before ordering), as was the quality of the second option chossen.
I get that it was a busy bank holiday weekend, but that really isnt an excuse in that market sector, surely thats what you want and you staff up accordingly.....
I wont say never, but it will be a while before my next visit. Best to be honest I think
Not quite the fine dining experience I expected. Poor greeting on arrival and 15 minutes wait at table before being asked if we wanted a drink.
Really good service and great easy going ambience. Delicious well- presented food!
Maybe more interesting desserts ?
Very much a local pub with a pretty basic layout and decor. Small menu with some dishes better than others. Good selection of beers and a reasonable wine list. Convenient location if visiting the Royal Crescent.
Bitterly disappointed across the board. Early Sunday evening dinner with friends but the staff were miserable, terrible food & no atmosphere at all. Complete waste of money.
Table was booked for 3:15 for Sunday lunch. They had run out of the lamb so had the beef which was a bit too raw for my liking. Then they ran out of the Eton mess pudding. Will go again but will try to book a table earlier to avoid disappointment
We are regular customers at the Marlborough Tavern and enjoy the high quality menu.
Despite making an online reservation we arrived to be allocated the only remaining table which was poor- a cramped space and a really uncomfortable railing at the height of one’s back which meant neither of us could sit back against the seat. We asked to be moved to another table but were told none was available
Our server asked us for our order but we said we wanted to wait while we decided whether to stay. She then told us she was awaiting our drink order so we had to repeat ourselves. We asked again if we could be moved to another table but were told this was not possible.
We therefore decided to leave - something we have never done in a restaurant we had booked a table at.
I’m very surprised that, as a longstanding customer at the Marlborough Tavern and the Hare & Hounds we were allocated the worst seating in the pub.
It was amazing. The waiters were kind and the food was great. It is a place for nice families.
Such a friendly waiter and wonderful food! We loved the curry and risotto. Would definitely recommend to anyone! Chocolate brownie was above average but not the best - but still very very happy overall!
Surprisingly quiet (a Monday lunch time), but really good food and great service, as usual!
It was early Friday evening so as to be expected there were families enjoying a nice time, a little noisy, but they did settle. Our starter, scallops was absolutely superb. Our steak was perhaps a little dry for medium, chips great. Service excellent! Thank you
Friday lunch, outside in the patio garden. Some road noise but not too much. Cider was lovely, food very good and friendly staff. Good city pub, will definitely come back.
The food was really good and we enjoyed the friendly and efficient service. The ambience is actually OK but the noise level is very echoey - they can't do much about that though. I would also recommend the Sunday Lunches here - excellent.
Perfect service and amazing food as always. Definitely recommend.
Excellent food and very good, friendly service. Has been one of our favourite Bath restaurants for a number of years. Is successfully maintaining a high standard over the years. Well done.
Delicious food as ever, had the fish and chips as always yummy and partner had the burger as I recommend it to him.
Good service even when pub was v busy.
Enjoyable time 😊
Superior gastro pub dining in a pleasant environment with attentive staff. Have enjoyed pub staples, Sunday roasts and their tasting menu. All very good. Great to have a neighbourhood local with such a high standard of fare.
Average restaurant, good food, but nothing special. One hour waiting because a group pre ordered their food. We were three and no way to find a solution. Desserts were not available as we required.
Very good food and great service. Good beer garden to have a drink in beforehand.
We had a lovely Sunday Roast, we tried one with chicken and one with beef, and both were delicious.
The Yorkshire pudding is also very good and the vegetables.
Fish and chips and Salt and pepper squid - delicious! Orders taken and food delivered with a smile Thankyou
A tad overpriced for some dishes. This is a pub after all, albeit a lovely pub with above average food. But a pub...
The staff were really attentive and friendly. I was impressed that there were two vegetarian options on the Sunday lunch menu. I had the wellington which was tasty. However, the roast potatoes and vegetables were a little undercooked and under seasoned.
Friendly attentive staff, Sunday roast was really delicious. One of my firm favourites.
Food was exceptional thankfully chef saved the day. Service was non existent- we had to ask to order , wrong wine came out - followed by the waitress forgot to open the correct wine and we had to keep chasing every time we wanted to add to our food for the evening. Understandable that there was the Pub in the Park festival running but guys don’t lose sight of your core customers!
