The Mermaid Inn
Head Chef Ben Fisher is focused on using quality, seasonal, local ingredients and cooking them perfectly. He has a broad range of experience having worked in Michelin Star restaurants such as Fischer’s Restaurant in Baslow, The French Laundry in California, Tom Aikens Restaurant in London and worked with Thomas Keller at Harrods. and is able to adapt to the requirements of the guest and the occasion.
This was our first visit but we're aware of The Mermaid' s reputation. We were celebrating our daughter's birthday. We arrived slightly early but were directed to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. Staff were friendly and courteous on arrival. We sat down exactly on time and were not rushed while choosing from the menu. There was an excellent choice. The waiter engaged with us from the start.
The meals were superb. I enjoyed the starter of Crab and Elderflower very much followed by the duck. Indeed all our party commented on the excellence of the food. We particularly enjoyed taking coffee in a small cosy lounge afterwards.
It was a great evening all round and we will definitely return for another celebration.
The Mermaid has become a Shrine, a place of pilgrimage. The ideal place to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, in fact, any special occasion. That explains why so many people travel miles to enjoy that ambiance provided by 600 years of history with that special person, knowing that the excellent food, and great staff who are always immaculately dressed, will only enhance the occasion.
Good food in interesting combinations. Lovely setting and attentive staff.
Amazing building, friendly staff, complimentary soup! We came back the next night too......
We had a great meal at The Mermaid, Rye. Good value for money and food was really good as was the service. Everyone was friendly and make you feel very welcome. Will go back if the area.
Good food and very nice dinning room.
This is my favourite restaurant for a special occasion. It's a wondeful place in a pretty cobbled street full of character and history. The service and food are always excellent and I can highly recommend it.
A very pleasant dinner experience. Mermaid Inn is a very pretty example of a 1400’s building. The food was good, they were able to accommodate the gluten free requirement for one of the guests and my wife enjoyed her G&T.
Food was bland and service poor. It is difficult to do a roast wrongly yet they managed to... Yet the venue is lovely and historical so may be a nice place just for a drink
My wife and I booked the night at The Mermaid Inn through TravelZoo at £99 per couple including breakfast. The normal price apparently was £140. I had booked a table for dinner at 1930. We came down, went in the bar I ordered a pint of ale and asked to see the wine list. I told the bartender that we would like to sit in the bar with our drinks, order our food then go to the table when our starter was ready. As this was now past our table time I was told that we should go straight in to the restaurant. So I took my pint and bottle of wine to our table where we waited and waited for our order to be taken. We both ordered from the set menu I had two courses my wife had three. Very small portions but quite tasty. We had a soup appetizer in-between which was very good.
The breakfast next morning was again was fair but my wife who ordered smoked salmon and scrambled egg needed a magnifying glass to see her egg. Very mean. They ran out of marmalade but one of the girls manage to rustle up a small glass eventually. No not our finest dining occasions.
What a wonderful place from the 1400's. All atmospheric with creaky corridors and slanting floors and quirky rooms. Facilities were very good and the staff were excellent.
Location was splendid, just behind the High Street and close to the castle, church and Lamb House. And there is parking but don't take a stretched Limo.
The food was expensive and some of it was not special - they tried to be to Michelin but the quality was not there. The full English was OK but I would recomend trying the smoked haddock and poached egg which was magnificent and sill left you room for pastries etc.
Excellent staff at the Mermaid Inn, highly recommended, excellent customer service and very friendly. A credit to your company.
Excellent service but quality of the main course was disappointing. Atmosphere was poor with little ambiance when we say to have our coffee. The bar was soulless at that time
First time visiting this venue.
Food and the service was excellent.
However there were some loud people in the bar swearing, which spoit the ambiance some what. Maybe that's why the music was turned up.
But apart from that well worth the visit and would go back.
The Mermaid Inn is a historic building in Rye dating back to the 15th Centuary with some parts even older. Lots of different rooms so we started we a glass of wine in the lounge next to the paneled restaurant. The restaurant is nicely set out and worth dressing up a little for. The menu had a good range of dishes and I had the pig's cheek moussaka and then turbot for the main course. The food was well presented and the service was excellent. Well worth a trip to Rye
Great food. Menu had many good options. Our server was Patrick & he was exceptional.
Lovely traditional pub with relaxed formal dining. The Sunday menu is really reasonable, under £30 for 3 courses! Great food and excellent service. For anyone wanting a more traditional Sunday fair and beautiful setting in one of the oldest pubs, this is the place 😊
Staff were so friendly, welcoming and attentive. We had the lamb roast and it was delicious.
Really enjoyed the whole experience, food was fabulous as was service. Not usually a fan of white table cloths and beams but it worked. Husband enjoyed the wine and me my g&t.
Thoroughly recommended, 5 stars for food if better selection of ice-cream.
Because the building is so old, it is nice ambience. Food was good.
Dont except an outstanding service, waiters doesnt come after you give the order.
I can say nice experience but dont wait perfection
We ordered Romney Marsh Roast Lamb which was pre cooked and reheated under the grill for too long. We expected it to be sliced off the bone as normal.
My main disappointment was that I made a 2.30 booking for Sunday lunch and when I explained that my family would be arriving 5-10 minutes later I was told I had to order the food because the kitchen closes at 2.30. Why on earth would you have the availability of a 2.30 booking if the kitchen closes then!
Other than that everything was fine.
We had the most delicious 3 course meal at the Mermaid. The staff we friendly and attentive and the building full of charm and character. I would highly recommend a visit.
Great service and delicious food. The best roast dinner I’ve had in a long time. Very accommodating with 3 year old too.
Myself and my sister are frequent visitors to the Mermaid for lunch. Service is outstanding, friendly staff and excellent food. The desserts are to die for.
This time Sam was our waiter absolutely charming. It certainly completed our dining experience.
Thank you for your review. We will share your praise with Sam, and with the Head Chef.
We had the most fabulous lunch in this wonderful historic inn.
The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and made us feel very comfortable. Overall an great afternoon in a great place.
Everything was beautiful. the environment, the food and the staff. We really enjoyed the experience and we hope to be able to book again soon. Thank you!
I had a three course meal and the overall experience was excellent. A really enjoyable experience. The food and presentation were very good. Just one negative comment; I thought the main course (cod) could have been a bit warmer. For this reason I have only given four stars. That said, I would certainly return to The Mermaid.
Fantastic surroundings, decor etc. Good, attentive service throughout. I've seen many reviews criticising portion sizes but i thought they got it just right and I'm a pig. So either the people criticising portion sizes were American or the restaurant has responded well to feedback. The food itself was good, i thought, but my wife said the chef uses too much cream which did seem to find its way into everything we had. I didn't mind though.
Staff very attentive and very pleasant..Rooms were outstanding..Such character..Food was very good, but varied from night to night..One evening excellent, the other evening good..Overall we were very satisfied and would eat thete again...
Really enjoyed our food but we had a late booking when the restaurant was closing down so maybe not the best experience. Staff were veyr friendly and helpful though.
We dined in the Mermaid Inn for a special birthday and were not disappointed. Everything about the experience was excellent, the surroundings, the food and the staff.
Food service and atmosphere excellent...cannot fault anything.
Small overpriced portions, trying to be posh nosh and failing ... badly. The menu was odd trying to use different flavours on the plate that just didn't work. The waiting staff were ok, they tried , the restaurant was a bit to quiet, could use a bit of background music, it would have been better . We won't be going back.
Thank you for your review. Food as ever is a matter of taste.....The Restaurant at The Mermaid has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for each of the last 5 years. Maybe a Fine Dining experience was not what you were looking for, and certainly canned music, is not part of that experience, especially when you are in a 600 year old setting, with murals painted by The Slade School of Art. We strive everyday for high standards, that is reflected by many previous reviewers.
Excellent meal and very good service. Would definitely recommend it.
We went for Mother’s Day dinner. The food was amazing! And the staff were so friendly and polite. Can’t wait to go back!
The staff were top notch , very attentive . This is a sign the hotel does not take anyone on . Very good overall.
Don't go if you're expecting big portions of the usual stuff. This is a restaurant that serves good locally sourced produce cooked to perfection. Very good attentive service. Can't fault it.
We had dinner with friends for my husband's 60th, lovely food, great service and the staff were friendly and very efficient. Looking forward to our next visit
