The Mermaid Inn
Head Chef Ben Fisher is focused on using quality, seasonal, local ingredients and cooking them perfectly. He has a broad range of experience having worked in Michelin Star restaurants such as Fischer’s Restaurant in Baslow, The French Laundry in California, Tom Aikens Restaurant in London and worked with Thomas Keller at Harrods. and is able to adapt to the requirements of the guest and the occasion.
We ordered Romney Marsh Roast Lamb which was pre cooked and reheated under the grill for too long. We expected it to be sliced off the bone as normal.
My main disappointment was that I made a 2.30 booking for Sunday lunch and when I explained that my family would be arriving 5-10 minutes later I was told I had to order the food because the kitchen closes at 2.30. Why on earth would you have the availability of a 2.30 booking if the kitchen closes then!
Other than that everything was fine.
We had the most delicious 3 course meal at the Mermaid. The staff we friendly and attentive and the building full of charm and character. I would highly recommend a visit.
Great service and delicious food. The best roast dinner I’ve had in a long time. Very accommodating with 3 year old too.
Myself and my sister are frequent visitors to the Mermaid for lunch. Service is outstanding, friendly staff and excellent food. The desserts are to die for.
This time Sam was our waiter absolutely charming. It certainly completed our dining experience.
Thank you for your review. We will share your praise with Sam, and with the Head Chef.
We had the most fabulous lunch in this wonderful historic inn.
The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and made us feel very comfortable. Overall an great afternoon in a great place.
Everything was beautiful. the environment, the food and the staff. We really enjoyed the experience and we hope to be able to book again soon. Thank you!
I had a three course meal and the overall experience was excellent. A really enjoyable experience. The food and presentation were very good. Just one negative comment; I thought the main course (cod) could have been a bit warmer. For this reason I have only given four stars. That said, I would certainly return to The Mermaid.
Fantastic surroundings, decor etc. Good, attentive service throughout. I've seen many reviews criticising portion sizes but i thought they got it just right and I'm a pig. So either the people criticising portion sizes were American or the restaurant has responded well to feedback. The food itself was good, i thought, but my wife said the chef uses too much cream which did seem to find its way into everything we had. I didn't mind though.
Staff very attentive and very pleasant..Rooms were outstanding..Such character..Food was very good, but varied from night to night..One evening excellent, the other evening good..Overall we were very satisfied and would eat thete again...
Really enjoyed our food but we had a late booking when the restaurant was closing down so maybe not the best experience. Staff were veyr friendly and helpful though.
We dined in the Mermaid Inn for a special birthday and were not disappointed. Everything about the experience was excellent, the surroundings, the food and the staff.
Food service and atmosphere excellent...cannot fault anything.
Small overpriced portions, trying to be posh nosh and failing ... badly. The menu was odd trying to use different flavours on the plate that just didn't work. The waiting staff were ok, they tried , the restaurant was a bit to quiet, could use a bit of background music, it would have been better . We won't be going back.
Thank you for your review. Food as ever is a matter of taste.....The Restaurant at The Mermaid has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for each of the last 5 years. Maybe a Fine Dining experience was not what you were looking for, and certainly canned music, is not part of that experience, especially when you are in a 600 year old setting, with murals painted by The Slade School of Art. We strive everyday for high standards, that is reflected by many previous reviewers.
Excellent meal and very good service. Would definitely recommend it.
We went for Mother’s Day dinner. The food was amazing! And the staff were so friendly and polite. Can’t wait to go back!
The staff were top notch , very attentive . This is a sign the hotel does not take anyone on . Very good overall.
Don't go if you're expecting big portions of the usual stuff. This is a restaurant that serves good locally sourced produce cooked to perfection. Very good attentive service. Can't fault it.
We had dinner with friends for my husband's 60th, lovely food, great service and the staff were friendly and very efficient. Looking forward to our next visit
Really attentive, friendly service. The desserts were amazing!!
Great food. Friendly and professional service. Amazing building.
Only stayed for lunch. But loved the hotel. The position and staff.
There is some good work being produced from the kitchens at The Mermaid, but the poor chap is not helped by the service circus out front. The Restaurant Manager has been over-promoted, and the head waitress thinks she has to keep talking at all costs. Further training in the finer points of quiet but attentive service is desperately needed before the one competent member of staff decides he has had enough and turns for the exit. To the detail: don't just plonk a jug of water down: go the extra mile and pour it. When more bread is requested, it is not an outrageous act worth of a Bateman drawing, and does not need the Hotel Manager's authorisation: just bring it, preferably rather before 10 minutes has elapsed. Diners come to The Mermaid in the hope of a sense of occasion: last night it was a place with no pride and no soul. The Head Chef should stamp his foot: he produces some well-conceived dishes and deserves better from his customer-facing team. PerM
Thank you for your review. We will share your review with the responsible managers and owners. Please accept our sincere apologies for failing to meet your reasonable expectations.
I booked our group of six in for an evening meal and the only negative comments from my group was that the portions could have been a bit larger, it was the scallop festival week and we all had a scallop starter and the scallops were few and tiny.
But everything else was very good and the prices were quite reasonable, we wouldn’t have minded to pay more for decent size scallops.
The service was fine.
I would certainly use it again.
A very pleasant environment in which to dine and the initial waiter, Patrick, was extremely professional. However, the service deteriorated when others took over and we were left waiting over half an hour for the starter and when finished the main, the dirty plates remained. Food was disappointing, my beef was too rare for my liking and not much veg. My wife chose the veggie option, Thai curry which was a plateful of Romanesque and rice. We skipped dessert because of this. A birthday lunch, and I was disappointed.

Unbeatable atmosphere, very good menu choice, superb food and excellent service.
I have stayed at the Mermaid Inn on many occasions and have always been absolutely delighted at every aspect of this historic and atmospheric venue.
Booked for Sunday lunch in the restaurant as a special occasion/delayed birthday gift for my daughter. Friendly staff, lovely historic building, prompt but not rushed service, very good food. Would definitely recommend and visit again.
A great place and fantastic food to boot! The service was impeccable but the mains took a long time to arrive - we waited more than 20 minutes between the courses.
Great ambiance, beautiful setting and great food. The staff were attentive and friendly. We'd come again.
Thank you for helping us to celebrate our Pearl Wedding Anniversary in such a special way
Lovely staff and very good food in a cosy and welcoming environment
Really disappointed this visit. We were sat a a table next to a window which for me was freezing. We ask to be moved away so they put us one table up which was still cold. They closed one side of the curtains and left the middle section open which was directly opposite me so still cold. I was not at all comfortable. All food came up luke warm, not much of it and my starter of hard lasagna tasted of fish so my husband eat mine and I ate his starter, venison main was almost raw my husband's lamb was mostly in rendered fatwe couldn't eat it . By now we were thoroughly dissolutioned. We told them our complaints and asked for example bill. They only charged us for one of the main courses and drinks and starters which really was of no consolation. Won't be going again, I'm sorry to say.
My sister and I are becoming regular lunchtime guests. The food is amazing. I am a vegetarian and there is always a good choice of dishes. This time it was tofu green curry. Absolutely delicious.
The staff as usual were amazing.
Wish we had booked to stay at this Inn but will certainly stay there if we go back. The staff were very friendly but professional and the food was excellent although we thought the sweet menu was uninspiring and expensive. We had a pre dinner drink in the bar which we enjoyed. The atmosphere generally in the Inn was very welcoming.
Warm, friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Excellent service, reasonably priced, delicious food. The historical setting is very special and the staff are welcoming.
Had a really good waiter called Patrick, but he finished before we had finished our meal. Then the service went down. Took ages to bring our deserts, and gave up waiting for our coffee and asked for the bill. Where we had been charged for the coffee. The coffee then appeared. Food was lovely but felt the service let it down. Other waiter not very smiley and service was slow. Five stars for Patrick though, they should clone him.
Beautiful old building with lots of history. Many of the staff still working there from my previous visit 3 years ago. They are all so friendly and welcoming. It's warm, cosy, traditional and full of character. Rooms are lovely too.
Charming period hotel. Very relaxed and unpretentious . Well looked after by staff
Surprised that they didn't have a pepper grinder and that the wine glasses were thick, pub-style goblets rather than fine glass. The food was a tad over-fussy and not very filling, and the staff were a bit overkeen and hence we felt we kept being interrupted to comment on the food.
