The Merrie Lion
Head Chef Neil Wilkes learnt his trade at Leicester Catering College. After working for a time in London restaurants, Neil returned to the Leicester area and worked in several gastropubs. His aim is to produce top quality pub food; delicious meals prepared from scratch using the best possible produce available. Menus are seasonal, with weekend specials to showcase Neil's talents.
A delightful find. I went there with French Canadian visitors - they said the food was really good! I'll be back
The staff - both bar and waitering staff were friendly and accommodating.
Good selection of mains and desserts. Three of our party went for the traditional roast beef Sunday dinner and I had the beetroot and goats cheese salad-excellent choices. Generous sized portions, huge Yorkshire puddings and the plates went back empty! The sticky toffee pudding was to die for!
Many thanks to all for making our visit to Fenny Compton-( our ancestral roots) with our Australian cousin a memorable one.
Greeted by very cheery young lady who looked after us brilliantly all night.
Nice menu if a little limited. Unfortunately there were3-4 dishes unavailable which cut down the choice even more.
But what we did order was beautifully cooked and presented.
Had a very pleasant evening and will certainly be returning.
We had a very good Sunday lunch, both the food and the service were excellent.
Excellent service and the food was of a very high standard, fresh cooked and very tasty.
The Merrie Lion is a friendly welcoming place with great food, always enjoying a great meal.
Excellent as always. Neil the chef always exceeds expectations!
Great food with very happy waitresses. Lively atmosphere with Daphne the landlady keeping an eye on things. Excellent evening with our French friends.
Too much food on plate moist of it taken by an over large YORKSHIRE pudding which should have been a quarter of the size` The sight put me off wanting to eat anything.
First meal there as it’s now our local !! Very nice food, good service and we could both have a drink 😂 will be going again
My wife and I visited the Merrie Lion for a mid-week lunch and to look for a pub to meet friends on a future occasion. We had an excellent 2 course meal, followed by coffee with plenty of choice on the menu and a good selection of ales. The service was efficient and very friendly. We at in the bar, which was pleasantly busy, but not too noisy and there was a wood-burning stove keeping the room warm and cheerful. Had we wished we could have eaten in the restaurant area, slightly separate from the bar. There is plenty of car parking. I would definitely recommend the Merrie Lion for a pub lunch or for a more substantial restaurant meal.
Last minute booking and it was an excellent choice the food is outstanding. The service was excellent.
A really pleasant pub with excellent food and service. Real pies too, not a bowl of stew with a puff pastry lid. Will definitely go again.
Excellent village pub with outstanding food and service.
Good food at the right price The idea of having small or regular meals is good
Nice seating areas, good selection of food.
Staff were lovely as was the food....great evening out.
The food was hot and very nice. The staff were very friendly & helpful. Well worth another visit.
Nice table, friendly service and good food. Portions could have been I little bigger especially starters
Lunch with my parents after a visit to the British Motor Museum. Very pleasant.
Second visit here & on both occasions was very well impressed. And most definitely will be back. Keep up the good work.
Visited the Merrie Lion whilst on a canal holiday, bit of a walk from the mooring but worth it. The staff are very welcoming and we were served by a great young lady, Ella, whi made us feel at home. Food was delicious and we went away feeling very happy.
Took my family here for Father's Day and everyone loved it. Great food and good service, what more can you ask for.
We had a most enjoyable Sunday lunch. A warm welcome and we were not rushed
Extensive Sunday lunch menu. Good quality and large portions. Excellent service. Good beer. We'll be back.
Beautifully cooked Sunday lunch.
Car park small & the room that our table was in lacked warmth & atmosphere. Shame there was a modern electric fire in the old fireplace.
Friendly service, nicely cooked roast beef, generous portions
Had a lovely meal here on a Sunday. All cooked fresh and excellent service. The price was very good at about £25 per head for a main course a desert and a drink. Will definitely be going back.
Lovely meal with good choice for Sunday lunch - not just Sunday roasts. Friendly staff. Would definitely go back.
Good atmosphere, warm friendly greeting, helpful happy staff. Well cooked, imaginative and fresh food. Also familiar dishes. Not a huge choice (I prefer that) but something to suit all tastes. Always happy to accommodate particular needs or desires. Not overcrowded but generally busy. Good choice of beers, wines and gins.
Excellent reception / welcome and customer service. Food plentiful, full of flavour and hot. Waitress service very good and well timed and polite. Overall pub clean and welcoming including locals. A must if you are out and about in South Warwickshire.
Well done to all the team at the Merrie Lion.
We were a group of six friends. We were very well looked after with attentive service of both food and drink at the table (barman noticed when our glasses were getting empty). Pies on main menu were excellent and good choice of fresh vegetables. Only slight disappointment was the pudding (STP) which was rather solid and did not taste freshly made. The house real ale was also excellent.
We enjoyed our lunch very much but beware there are huge portions!! Lovely atmosphere, jovial barman and friendly landlady.
Very pleasant evening with lovely friends, nice food and drinks
Enjoyed our meal, excellent value. Will be visiting again
Hosts very hospitable and helpful. A very interesting building, in a very lovely
village location. A couple of critisms, we had to wait for some 35-40 minutes
for our food but it was cooked fresh and enjoyable. The second problem was
there were numerous flies in the window which were irritating and troublesome.
When I complained I was told "Well this is in the country and health and safety
would not let us spray the offenders and sticky fly catchers were out of the
question." I would not accept a window table again. We shall visit again
and hopefully have a slightly better experience.
Another great Sunday lunch at the Merrie Lion. Always very tasty and great service.
nice evening out, food excelent, staff frendly and attentive, would recommend to family and friends.
Great village pub. We went for sunday lunch and everything was great.
The sunday lunch was wonderful - we both had beef and it was cooked to perfection. The roasties were delicious and the yorkshire pudding was large and very tasty.
We'll definitely be back for sunday lunch again!
Went here after a walk on nearby Avon Dassett hills with friends : friendly welcome , very good waiting staff , beer good . The risotto was excellent , the roast meal excellent , the frittata was over-priced though and unimaginative . The outside area looked good .
I think this was the best place I have ever been to for great food, friendly staff and loverly surrounding, I cannot fault the place and I am already planning on returning with my family
