The Muddy Duck - Hethe
We've been here several times and the food and ambiance have always been exceptional .
The staff are warm and welcoming and enthusiastic about the food.
We arrived a few minutes early so had a drink in the bar first, it's a lovely and cosy English country pub at the front, Our waiter came and found us when the table was ready but there was no sense of us being hurried to our seats.
The food is fantastic, a good choice of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes and everything cooked to perfection, in four visits I've not had anything I didn't love. The scallops starter was sweet and melted in the mouth, and the slow braised lamb shank was amazing.
Sunday Lunch. Good as always, was quiet as it was so sunny outside.
Lovely family birthday meal. Food was good as always however I thought there could have been a better selection of vegetables with the Sunday roast. Service was excellent and ambience very relaxed anc welcoming
Perfect for a family lunch with 9 around a perfect round table. Vould not be bettered
We usually love this restaurant for food, but unfortunately we had a poor meal with poor service last time we visited.
I’m not sure if the chef has changed but the entire meal tasted of butter which was not pleasant.
The usual main guy was not there that day so not sure if it is under new management or if he had the night off.
It may be a one off, which I do hope.
I was going to book my birthday meal there for 12 guests but that meal put me off as didn’t want to risk it being for a special occasion. Such a shame.
We are returning customers, super place to eat and usually great food but both plates of our Sunday Lunch beef was very fatty and just unpleasant. The majority went onto a side plate which was “beautifully” foil wrapped for our dogs at home. Disappointing as usually have three superb plates.
Lovely atmosphere & food. Looked after all guests well
Fantastic roast with great service. Big portions and decent side dishes, slightly let down by mediocre roast potatoes and over-done yorkshires. Wouldn't have wanted to spend any more than the £19 charged, but a high-quality, memorable experience all round.
Food was amazing apart from Roast potatoes. They were disgusting - overcooked and hard. Reheated a number of times.
The rest was amazing so to mess up roast potatoes on a roast dinner was very disappointing!
The standard of food is amazing and plentiful. The service is outstanding and the staff are very attentive and nothing is too much trouble. Highly recommended. Keep up the good work.
Had a table for 3 for Sunday lunch, one of our party is only partially sighted and the staff did all they could to ensure we were really well looked after. The food was both ample portions and extremely tasty. Finally I need to mention our waitress (Alice) who was brilliant.
I generally can not fault these guys. I've only ever had great experiences. This occasion though we were disappointed with the service we got after explaining we felt there was too much truffle oil in the Venison and Boar Ragu. The truffle oil completely overwhelmed the dish to the point that was literally the only thing you can taste. Sure one can argue this is a preference thing, but that didn't ring sound, when, after explaining our disappointment to the service staff proceeded to explain to me that "truffle oil is strong", and that this "used white truffles" and it was "infused rather than mixed in". Bah humbug.
As a former restaurateur I'm well aware of how truffle oil tastes and how it can be used and I would argue that it's generally not used to overwhelm a dish to that extent, and if you intend to offer a dish that displays that level of truffle intensity you only need offer a warning to customers that order the dish so we can choose accordingly.
Their remedy was to give us two free deserts despite one ragu dish being returned to the kitchen hardly having been touched and the other from which only the pasta had been consumed. Blah.
Second time at the Muddy Duck, on Boxing Day for lunch. Great food and service and a great way to spend Boxing Day.
Excellent for our staff Christmas party.
Great food. Great service. Amazing value for money. A must visit
Fabulous pre Christmas family lunch, delicious and served
WIth fab hospitality
Unfortunately everyone in our party felt that the food let down a lovely setting and good service. There was a after taste to the ragu and ox cheek sauce that was not pleasant- had the stock been ‘caught’ or over reduced? It was a shame because we really wanted to love it (especially at the price) but we just didn’t. Sorry.
Very tasty food (so good that the price didn't matter), good service and warm (slightly hot and 'ungemutlich'), asked to move; then cosy. Acoustics requires some attention.
The service although very pleasant had been slow. The heating unit fan needed to be positioned outward rather than downward (it was a little uncomfortable). The food generous and delicious.
I can only recommend as I’m hoping this was an off day. A regular here for many years, the staff were great as usual but the food has deteriorated. My gravdlax had a bone and so did two out of the three fish main courses. Simply not good enough but as I said this is the first time a meal has been disappointing so I hope it isn’t a bad sign.
Very recommended für dinner
Service was very slow, the burger was luke warm, we did mention and the shared pudding was taken off our bill as a 'sorry'. It was meant to be an early anniversary lunch for us but we were left feeling disappointed. I did enjoy the ox cheeks they were delicious but the other bits let the Muddy duck down.
Great place but lights are too bright in the dining room and the food thought tasty needs some refinement.
Still love this place but lacked some ambience this time, greeter at the door took a while, food - sea bass curry far too hot! Left without much of a goodbye or thank you. A bit average - service, food has been much better in the past.
Some food undercooked. Two meals were taken off the bill by he staff
The Muddy Duck never disappoints. Very happy to have this restaurant nearby.
Wonderful welcome, really helpful with dietary requirements, very good food & a super serving team
It's been a little while since we were last at the Muddy Duck - just too many other things going on. Very pleased to see several seasonal changes to the menu. Game ragu with pasta was remarkably good and lovely contrast with starter of scallops and pumpkin purée from specials board. We won't leave it so long for our next visit.
Had such a lovely dinner at the Muddy Duck! Delicious food in a comfy but elegant space. Everyone was extremely welcoming and we whiled away hours in the cozy fireplaced bar for hours afterwards. A must visit!
Disappointed that the extensive menu had only one vegetarian dish, no choice.
Welcome by staff was great.
Shown promptly to our table, our waiter, explained all about the food and specials available, and was very pleasant and polite.
Only thing I found was that the game pie was rather dry although a pot of jus was provided and being baked I personally found the pastry hard.
All my guest were very impressed and all in all we thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
We certainly will be going to the Muddy Duck again soon.
Great food and really excellent service. The staff couldn't have been more attentive. I can't wait to go back.
I’ve wanted to come here for ages and finally got treated to a meal by my lovely mum. I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations but it actually exceeded them!
The food was delicious with pretty decent portions but it was the staff that made it amazing. Our waiter was funny, knowledgeable and very friendly- a real asset to the restaurant.
We stopped off after a shopping trip to Bicester. The muddy duck is located in a beautiful village, easy to get to and food is good. We would probably sit in the pub next time as it was a little quiet in the restaurant (to be expected on a Wednesday afternoon). Worth a trip.
Waited a while to find the right night to book as they are often busy (popular). Really enjoyed the excellent food and will return.
Prompt service and a broad choice of dishes on the menu. Pleasant waitress who knew the food and could answer our questions. A nice atmosphere. Have eaten here in summer and winter and both inside and outside seating areas are lovely.
A tasty traditional Sunday roast enjoyed in a comfortable and friendly restaurant, we shall be back!
Amazing food, wonderful service and beautiful surroundings, very romantic.
Been several times before and they didn’t disappoint.
Amazing food and service from the waiter! Everything 5 star apart from our greeting as we were not from the local area we were unsure where to go and the barmaid wasn’t overly friendly or helpful upon arrival! Other than that I would highly recommend.
