First impressions were not good with reception offering to hang my wife's jacket on a old bent wire hanger. The only one in a empty cupboard! Apparently they are going to get some wooden ones. We took our seat and studied the menu, there were two ways of going in terms of price. The first to order a steak for c£26, then add a sauce for £2.50, then add vegetables again for more money or alternatively order a more modest meal for c£14. We decided to play safe and chose the latter. I had a chicken burger which was fine but not memorable. My wife ordered a caesar salad which I recall cost c£12 but then you had to add £4 for some chicken. The meal came but turning over the chicken it was burnt on the underside. She complained and the waiter took it away only or for it to reappear with an explanation that it was not burnt but charred as in a BBQ. She was still not satisfied and then the manager came. We pointed to the chicken in my burger which was fine and asked for the same with the Caesar Salad. Eventually the manager agreed and the chicken was replaced. Then however, the croutons were not crispy or crunchy but simply dry bread, which of course she decided to leave. I should add, before our main meals arrived we were given some small brown bread rolls with butter. Unfortunately there were dry and certainly not freshly baked, so we decided to leave them (this probably led to our caution about not going for a more expensive meal). The puddings were no improvement. I has a scoop of ice cream with a watery coffee flavoured liquid and two cookies obviously out of a packet, all of which was very disappointing. My wife had a creme brulee with some mixed fruit. The fruit was OK but probably defrosted but the brulee had completely the wrong consistency, more like jelly and was also flavourless. At that point we'd had enough and I asked for the bill. We waited for at least 10 minutes but nothing came and so I had to go up to the reception desk to pay. We were pleased to escape!!
Excellent Sunday lunch in the modern dining area of this historic hotel, helpful friendly staff . So good to see this hotel realising its' potential after slowly going downhill when owned by "chains" in previous years. Really good job done on a sympathetic extension to the old building and comfortable outside seating areas.
Definitely recommend . Slightly outside my normal budget but the quality was good and my guests were delighted ( they didn't pay the bill !)
We were staying as a group of 6 for 2 nights. Fabulous breakfast choice. Lovely grounds and outside seating. Rooms were lovely although when booking height of room should be made clear. Husband is 6'5" and couldn't stand up straight in room or shower. Table for 6 at dinner was on high stools with not much back support and a tree goes through the centre of the table. This made it difficult for conversation and stools a little uncomfortable after 3 courses. Decoration of bar and restaurant lovely. Would recommend and if there was a Spa attached would definitely be back on a regular basis.
The food was very nice food delivered with quick and polite service. We felt welcome from the beginning to the end.
Our first visit to The Oaksmere was a memorable one.
We had booked an early table, and the restaurant was quiet, so we got immediate and undivided attention.
As the restaurant got busier, the staff were still very friendly, helpful and professional in their demeanour, which was good to observe and experience.
The food arrived very quickly and could not be faulted. We enjoyed the cooked to order ribeye and T-bone steaks, as well and the amazingly presented desserts.
Cost was higher than expected, but the overall experience largely justified this, so we will be back!
I received my bill, but I never looked at the items only the bottom total....Paid and walked out.
When I went through my paperwork they had charged me for drinks I never had...I dont live in the UK,so moral of the review is look before you pay.
Had fixed price lunch here and although the portions were small the food was very nice.
Excellent in every way. Especially Rachel our waitress who was delightful!
This was my second visit to the reconstructed Oaksmere - this visit was a vast improvement on the first and my friends, and I were very impressed. We were well looked after by the young waitress and the food was very good as was the wine we chose.
I will certainly again. Diana K
First of all I would say the staff were friendly and helpful in the main but for a venue of this stature the overall service was poor. We had a table of 10 reserved which we were sat down on time. The starters were fine although we had to point out that one of those ordered didnt arrive and finally was brought to the table along with the main course. Two of the main meals were totally inedible and had to be sent back with a refund offered which spoiled 2 guests enjoyment. No condiments were on the tables which we had to ask for and there was confusion over the steaks and how they were cooked so guests had to accept what arrived. When the coffees came we had to ask for sugar as it wasn't served. Small details possibly but surely simple to arrange. Finally when receiving the bill we were charged for items incorrectly and the staff seemed irritated that we queried it . Sadly we will not use the venue again as the experience spoiled a family occasion. Our overall view was the service didn't match the setting and the prices were high for what was served up.
Had a super meal to celebrate my Dad’s birthday. The restaurant is light and modern and the food and service were excellent. It has been a number of years since my previous visit but it definitely won’t be as long until my next visit.
The location and surroundings are beautiful. The decor was very good.
As soon as we saw the menu we thought that the food choiced were bland and boring. I would have expected better than burger and pasta. Fish and chips and mushy peas.
The risotto was sent back. It was not what was ordered and it was too salty. Staff tried to blame it on the parmisan. It was slapped in a massive bowl and looked unappetising. The meatballs were presented in the same manner. The portions were far too large and half the other meals were left.
The head waiter was very apologetic and tried to offer an alternative to the risotto but the moment had passed.
It ended up being a most unsatisfactory celebratory dinner.
Great food but slow service. We had to wait to be seated for nearly five minutes before someone came to collect us for our table. We then waited a while for another waiter who asked if we had ordered and we pointed out that we had not even had menus yet despite being seated for some time. He apologised and said as we had been waiting for a while could he get us some drinks. We ordered them but they were then charged on our final bill whereas we had understood they were on the house as an apology for our wait! It did not seem that busy and the waiter who looked after us was very nice and helpful but was clearly rushed off his feet and needed more staff to help him. We were in no hurry but it was irritating to be kept waiting particularly on arrival as we stood there like lemons waiting to be seated with a couple of waiters and the kitchen seeing us standing there but not coming over. Not a great start or a great welcome. As ever the food was excellent and the atmosphere is great but Oaksmere don’t spoil it by skimping on staff as presumably most guests book in advance so you have a good idea of numbers who will be dining.
Local boutique hotel with extensive grounds, a play area for the children, and the restaurant has excellent food, with a new chef.
Service by front of house staff is very good, as they settle into their jobs. Much improved.
The bar has an all day menu which is similar to the restaurant, and just as good.
Heartily recommend this place for a treat, or for a celebration
We had a wonderful lunch for my fathers 60th birthday, not only was everything absolutely perfect but the staff were beyond marvellous at dealing with my many and varied food related 'complications'. I had the luxury of simply choosing what I wanted from the menu and then they were able to creatively, and deliciously, adapt my choices to suit my restrictions. It's not our first visit, and it won't be our last. Thoroughly recommended.
It was a nice warm sunny evening and we sat out on the terrace for our evening meal, it was quiet being mid week and a early evening meal but the service was good along with the food so nice meal.
Excellent food and service could not fault. Will definitely come again.
On booking table we told them we were celebrating a 90th birthday, they reserved us a high table with high chairs, we were given an alternative. When sitting at the table there were lots of flys around the dining area. The food was average, booked 4 Sunday roasts, 3 of the meat dishes had more fat on it than meat. Service was very slow. Ambiance was above average but not outstanding.
Great food, especially scallops, cooked and presented perfectly.
Yert is was gucci me and my daddy enjoyed the party
Impossible to fault the surroundings and ambience. Staff very welcoming and helpful with our menu questions. It took slightly longer between courses than expected, possibly due to it being Fathers Day. The food was beautifully presented and a there was an excellent variety of wines and beers for us to choose from. A special place to celebrate with friends/family.
Enjoyed our stay the room was realy nice although some things didn't work like the lights in the bath and bedside light it was still top notch . Food was very good although the menu in the room was different to the one in the restaurant one was spring menu and one in restaurant was summer menu . Service was very good and any thing we required was brought to our room straight away . I would recommend the oakmere and I would stay again .
Beautiful old house, renovated with fine contemporary features.
Service is lovely, and the food is excellent.
I’ve visited several times, and stayed at Oaksmere too, and always enjoy it.
Excellent meal in lovely surroundings and great, friendly service.
Superb service, excellent food, fantastic family venue (there's a pirate ship) and exquisite wine list.
Great staff. Particularly attentive. Lovely food. Really good to see the open kitchen.
A very nice setting for a special celebration meal. The staff were relaxed, friendly and the right level of attentive. The food was excellent and we had a very nice evening.
Loverly setting in beautiful grounds with a well laid out restaurant with attentive staff.
My husband and I took my parents here for a joint birthday lunch. We went on a Sunday and we all choose the roast beef, which was succulent and delicious. Overall the flavours were good and the service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive.
However, the cauliflower cheese was sitting in a puddle of water where it had (I assume) been reheated - a shame because the whute sauce was tasty. The roast potatoes were dry and hard to cut - again kept warm perhaps? The carrots were a little under done. Delicious gravy though. And I was delighted to see extra gravy provided in a jug.
With some small tweaks to the food, Oaksmere has the makings of an excellent restaurant.
Difficult to rate The Oaksmere as one of the meals was good but one was poor. The dining room was lovely with a great atmosphere and staff were attentive. Both scallop starters were very tasty and the roast beef was good. Unfortunately, the lemon sole was very poor and Baked Alaska very disappointing. To their credit, they did not charge for these two dishes and were apologetic. I definitely think we would give The Oaksmere another chance although we just came away disappointed.
Love The Oaksmere the food is always oustanding and the service second to none.
We visited this hotel for a Sunday lunch, having been married there in 2007. The hotel has had a facelift since then and we were impressed with the new restaurant.
The service was excellent, all staff were friendly and attentive. The food was very good though I was disappointed that the Sunday roast did not include chicken as an option. In the end I went for pan-fried salmon which was very nice, my wife had lamb. We found the desserts less impressive and they did not live up to their enticing descriptions!
My one criticism was that I was not offered the roast chicken, since a 'regular' customer who came in after us requested it and the waiter duly obliged.
Despite being local we have never eaten in the restaurant before and we were very impressed. The food was delicious and the staff excellent. The atmosphere was buzzing and we'll definitely be back. Thank you!
Absolutely excellent meal with very attentive service. The pastry chef was brilliant and the baked Alaska was the best ever.
Everything was really good but I marked the service down because my sirloin was cooked rare when I asked for medium and it could have been rectified if someone had come over to do a quality check and ask us if our meal was okay.
The meal was lovely and we did appreciate the sentiment from the kitchen/waiter after. We will definitely be returning!!
Very nice food and nice place to have lunch in a relaxed atmosphere
We had lunch on Tuesday
It was a horrible wet day. But the ambience of Oaksmere was welcoming and Friendly
The meal was delicious. Keep it up
The best Sunday dinner I have had in a very long time . Cooked to perfection and attentive staff . Will most definitely be going back there soon
As my husband has a number of dietary issues I rang the hotel and requested a menu for the evening we were visiting. This was sent through immediately and we selected suitable dishes and forwarded via email with requests for certain ingredients to be omitted.
We enjoyed a lovely evening in great surroundings with great food, with everything just as we requested.
