Overall 2food service ambience

It’s always a less than pleasant chore to provide less than glowing feedback, so let’s see if I can make this constructive.

We’re old hands, lived in the area for over 30 years, and happy to travel for a decent venue and inspiring menu. We knew the Old Butchers when first converted. We thought we’d give you a try after a pause of considerable time.
The menu looked very appealing.

I suppose the measure is whether I can do better myself.
The positive: my Calf’s liver was good, cooked just right, the kale interesting and it was good to see olive oil in the mash. Not difficult to do though, when at a premium. My wife’s fish was fresh.

The not so good:
My scallops were completely tasteless; perhaps they’d have faired better with some searing, seasoning and sealing.
The cheeses ( 3 tired bits of a not inspiring choice ) served on a well used wooden platter. Grief, throw the wooden platters away, I nearly declined. Completely unacceptable.
I can do far far better myself.

The table’s are small and cramped. There wasn’t room for the two of our settings and was precarious.
Proximity to others far to uncomfortable, especially when boxed in on one side by a pair of drunks insistent on engaging, and another pair of loud drunks on the other.

Although the waitress was fine, the welcome was less than cool, more a bother than a welcome. No idea which table was ours.
I tipped reasonably generously. Perhaps in error.

Shall we rush back?
Probably not. Far better quality with a little distance.
In any event, I wish you well.

We were a disappointed. The restaurant is cramped and a bit uncomfortable. Very small tables. The food was inconsistent. Whilst my dishes were amazing, my husband's dishes were sub standard. We booked the restaurant as it came highly recommended but it was a bit of a let down unfortunately. Staff were friendly. It would be good if they could offer to take diners' coats to the cloakroom as there is really no space at the tables.

The Butchers came highly recommended to us by a good friend, and we were not disappointed one bit, the staff are very attentive without being over the top, they had a great selection of food that will tempt most palettes, wine list not bad either.
We arrived around 10 minutes late due to heavy traffic, we were greeted with a smile and shown to our table, we were given ample time to peruse the menu to decided our starters and our main courses, all were prepared to perfection too.
So if you are in the area it is must definitely worth a visit.

Our Annual get together at the Cheltenham Festival would not be the same without a meal at The Butchers, and we had a superb meal on Thursday night, particularly the Calves liver, which was cooked to perfection !

We had a gorgeous lunch at The Butchers on our last day in Stow on the Wold. The menu was fantastic as it catered for both fish lovers and meat people. I had the chilli and crab spaghetti which was full of flavour and not sparse on the ingredients. My fiancé had the roast which featured a Yorkshire pudding the size of his head and roast beef which was ridiculously soft. We had amazing desserts and cocktails to go with it and the staff were very friendly. It was probably the nicest meal on our trip and we would definitely go back.

4 of us went here on 25th February
Great atmosphere as soon as we entered
It was bustling in there but service was great. We were shown to our table straight away and were served our drinks whilst we looked at menu
Menu was good. Different to the usual restaurant menus.
We had starters, mains and desserts and loved it all
Service was great. Attentive but not too much
Would recommend this restaurant and would go again if in the area

We had a fantastic meal at The Old Butchers. The menu is not miles long which I always take as the sign of a good restaurant-they clearly use fresh ingredients prepared well and professionally. My fish soup was perfect and just right portion-wise. My husband's fritto misto was perfectly cooked-light and crispy and fresh. My Dover sole was delicious as was my husbands steak-both perfectly cooked. The service was friendly and professional and ambience was great. I would highly recommend The Old Butchers and wish it was closer to home so we could visit more often!

Having had a wonderful meal there in June we took friends for birthday celebration expecting it to be just as good but was so disappointed. The waitress had no idea about beer on offer and just said she had no idea. I asked her to check if my chosen starter was wheat free and she checked and said it was. The mushroom risotto was tasty but the egg on top was hard boiled and cold. I asked again if my main choice of cod was wheat free and was assured it was but it came battered! The young waiter had no knowledge if it was wheat free but went to check. Meanwhile our guests were politely waiting. They all started their meals and after a few minutes my plate was taken away. I asked if I could choose a other dish so chose a safe lemon sole which arrived after every one had finished and it was just that. Fish on a plate with nothing else. Some chips arrived but did nothing to enhance the fish. My table guests enjoyed their food but commented on the lack of any vegetables apart from chips. Puddings were enjoyed by 2 people and to finish off the other 2 were served luke warm coffee. Very disappointing especially as it was a birthday treat. We were offered a small amount off my fish dish which was very expensive in the first place £28! For just fish on a plate. Would think twice about going again. Serving staff should have knowledge of allergies and dishes on the menu. We were the first to order on a quiet lunch time so no excuse especially when I had asked waitress to check the fish would be wheat free. ( there was no mention of the fish being battered on the menu) Ignorance of allergies could result in someone becoming very ill. We may try the restaurant again in the future when hopefully they will have fully trained staff.
Just so disappointed.

For a place trading on the name of the old butcher and priding itself on its website on its knowledge of meat and fish, this was a pretty disappointing experience. I was expecting something pretty decent for Sunday lunch when opting for roast beef. Instead they served a pretty measly, dry and chewy plate that had obviously sat too long under a heat lamp. An attempt at distraction with a huge - though nicely made - Yorkshire pudding didn't make up for it. Despite taking it off the bill, no member of staff acknowledged the poor quality of the food, which was just strange. Other half's risotto was good and the service was quick and pleasant, hence 3 stars. Just don't be fooled by the name.

I don't normally write reviews but I visited this place with a 5 month teething baby (not ideal but nothing we could do!). From the moment I asked if the stroller was ok, to the moment we left, the service was amazing, probably the most attentive team I have seen for a long time. The food was also very good and well presented. I would be back there in a heartbeat if I didn't live 3500 miles away!

Customers at next table on Skype throughout our meal. Very loud and proud. Waiter sloshed expensive wine over the table said 'whoops' and had to be asked to clean it up. Steak was very good. Lobster underwhelming and small.

A delightful meal for a birthday celebration. Wine list very large and interesting. Menu unusual featuring a lot of fish including lobster although I had expected more meat from the name. Staff were friendly, prompt and knowledgable. This is a bistro style restaurant with tables quite close together and a little noisy when busy but has a very pleasant ambience.

Wonderful food reasonably priced and a good drinks/wine menu. Our Chilli Crab spaghetti and Ox done two ways were both delicious. Service was excellent right up until the end when it took around 25 mins for desert to arrive (worth it though - pistachio crème brulee was yummy) . This wouldn't stop us going back though! Lovely waiting staff too.

We shared a fritto misto for a starter and then both had a half lobster. The lobster was very well cooked and remained moist. It would have been nice to have a little salad with the lobster; it was served completely plain with chips and a sauce on the side. I would highly rate the food and would most certainly return. The staff were very young but helpful and competent.
The only negative was that the tables are too close together. The restaurant was full on a cold and damp November night and the owners are obviously keen to serve as many as possible. However I would encourage them to take out [2] tables which I believe would have a noticeable impact on the ambiance.

I love this place!! Of course I enjoyed the food, its {insert your favourite invective here) marvellous !! I From the sharing platter for two ( we hadn't wanted a starter but my main course was going to take a little while so we were offered a sharing platter - half size option) to the calves liver for my DH and the posh game pie for me, the food is stunning..oh and the olives!!! Please try the olives. All round excellent noms in a cosy comfortable environment. We were both driving so I can't tell you about the wines, but I can tell you we are planning our next visit.
