Today, his focus remains on his relationship with local suppliers; he is fully committed to seasonality and utilising local produce to not only showcase the best of Bath, but the best of British cuisine.
The Olive Tree was fantastic. It is not cheap, but it was easily worth every penny. The staff were very accommodating of dietary requirements, and just generally attentive, polite and caring. The service was amazing, and it was clearly very important to the staff. They served us a wine less than a minute later than intended and could not have been more apologetic, even giving us a little extra wine, and then refusing a tip (thoroughly deserved) at the end of the evening!The atmosphere was really lovely. It managed to be cool and modern, while still cosy and warm. The food was unreal. The bets bit for us was the sommelier. He clearly loved wine and his passion was infectious. And it was great wine! So good we forgot to ask for the names of the ones we really liked... oops!

7 course tasting menu on a Friday evening. Nice atmosphere, welcoming staff. Ordered a glass of champagne each when we were seated, but these took around 15 mins to arrive, by which time we were almost on the first course. It would have been nice to enjoy the champagne while we browsed the menu. The food was excellent and made us smile. There were fairly long gaps between the courses, which can sometimes be nice, but we were often sat wondering where the food was. This was balanced out by the excellent sommelier, who was himself a highlight of the evening. We were in no rush, and it was an enjoyable night out.
The Olive Tree is always a culinary delight. It is expensive which makes it a special occasion restaurant for us. They offer 3 tasting menus one of which is vegetarian. However, you can choose individual dishes from any of the menus in the style of a la carte. We love it. There has been a recent change in front of house staff and while superb service the atmosphere was not quite as relaxed and jolly as it was but I’m sure that will improve with time.
Beautifully cooked food in a lovely setting
I need to have gluten free food. I was given some lovey gluten free bread with my own butter and olive tapenade. I don't think any of the dishes I ordered needed to be changed as they were all gluten free. It was a lovely meal as always.
Good service, good food. Also, the restaurant does its own freshly baked gluten bread!
Olive Tree was busy on Saturday evening. We enjoyed a fabulous meal. The complementary amuse bouche was roasted cauliflower veloutte- a wonderful start to our meal. My wife enjoyed a duck liver starter. My 'chicken and egg' starter was delightful, with a lovely soft poached yolk to accompany the chicken. For main course we had halibut - a generous portion and very well cooked. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her Guariguette - a strawberry mousse with an excellent homemade pistachio ice cream - my pistachio souffle was beautifully light and served with a raspberry sorbet. The service was first class, even though the restaurant was full. Little details like ensuring our water glasses were always topped up. Best meal we had in Bath.
Good attentive service. Excellent food, really flavoursome but the menu choices are quite restrictive. You need to relish game or fish!
Really like the olive tree in bath. I think the food is very good yet the atmosphere not too stuffy. Had a meal with three of my friends and was thoroughly enjoued by everyone. Including the amuse bouche which is always a nice little addition. Only downside was a long wait between the starters and the mains. Maybe either they could look to speed that up or another amusement could be offered. I dont recall whether this was an issue Ive had on other visits so it could potentially just be a one off delay - either way - id still go back!
If you go on Trip Advisor bad reviews are followed by very positive ones which is most pecular. Our experience on Saturday night was not great, indeed its hard to argue with 2 reviews posted by fellow diners, Sunday night someone posts a glowing tribute, directly contradicting the points made by the earlier reviews- at best it shows high levels of inconsistancy which is not what you expect from a restaurant charging these prices.
All I can say is we wouldnt go again or encourage any one else.
Food is excellent and the setting good. However the service is not as good as it should be for the quality and price of the restaurant, probably due to how busy it is. Main course was slightly cold and long waits for deserts and coffees. Shame, as the restaurant is generally great, but just let down by not being able to cope with too many people at one time.
We enjoy our dinner at Olive Tree in Bath. The food was excellent and service attentive.
I am not fun of basement settings but it was a very nice space and a good choice for a winter outing.
So, a very good experience with great tasting food carefully balanced throughout our meal. The risotto and kedgeree starters brought out the best of the food. The Plaice and Sea Bass with the main courses were exquisite and if I was being picky then the only downside was the parmesan polenta being a let down when it promised loads. The staff were friendly without being obtrusive and added to the experience. Eating early at 7 it was lovely to have a break and to talk before the dessert without any pressure of the table being required for a later cover, rare in London. Well worth visiting and one that I will be adding to my list for fine dining restaurants outside of London.
Location, food, ambience etc. all fine, in fact really great quality cold meat plate. However, staff fluent in english were reluctant to use it to speak to us. A sad lack of the staff looking around and seeing what was happening in the dinning room caused the service to be patchy and disorganised. For example, several offers of toast but hot drinks hard to come by. We noticed we were not the only pair with a problem. The couple "next door" had part of their special cooked breakfast order forgotten. Used plates, cups etc were not removed when staff did attend the tables and again this was not just us.
I am sure the lunch and evening service is much better so a bit of staff training would sort this out and make the experience a real treat.

Having previously eaten here we were somewhat disappointed with the menu with the exception of the steak. Service was excellent and the food looked appetising but lacked somewhat. I missed the tasting menu .
Lovely setting and fab food but slightly let down by the staff who really didn't appear to have worked in a restaurant before. Had to ask for water top ups and for wine list and to order wine, etc. Otherwise a good place for a special meal.
The food was exquisite. All three courses for both my partner and I were presented so well it was almost a shame to eat them as it ruined the picturesque presentation. But the flavours and quality of the food were outstanding. The waiting and bar staff were all lovely and were even so kind as to recommend some nice bars to commit us our evening in. Couldn't have been more pleased!
From entering the building to leaving, we were well catered for. The menu had some unusual dishes and portions were plentiful.

Excellent meal in a smart but not over formal setting. Oriental influences in a stater of quail with stir fried veg. Superbly fresh plaice and gurnard for mains.
After dining at the Dower House the night before, we weren't sure it could be topped, however the service food and general ambience were on a par, if not better!
We booked the Olive Tree for dinner having heard that it was Bath's restaurant of the year in 2011 and one of Bath's finer restaurants. The food is very nice though loses one star for serving the cheese platter straight from the fridge - both soft and hard cheeses hard as a consequence, and chutney and grapes ice cold! The waiting staff were inattentive, seemed disinterested and bored, and brought us our pre dinner drinks mid-way through the starter (after prompting). In fairness these were deducted from the bill as a consequence.
Overall nice food and reasonable atmosphere, but sadly let down by poor service.

Care was taken in our food preparation and it showed. Service efficient despite being in a quiet time in the afternoon on a Saturday. I don't live in the area but I've bookmarked it upon a return to the area to try some more of the enticingly-named dishes on the menu.
First time that I go, it met and exceeded all my expectations!

Dined here with my parents to celebrate my father's birthday, and everything was just what I have grown to expect from top-notch London restaurants; to find this out in Bath was a really great surprise. The service was impeccable - even talking us through ingredients when we took an interest. The food was wonderful - definitely deserving of a visit from the Michelin man, and perfectly reasonably priced (another issue I find in Bath).
Whenever I am back home this will be the first place I call to see if they have a table.
Relaxed atmosphere and helpful with choices of excellent wines. The terrine of cornish hen fantastic and so was the melon and other starters and the main courses of fish - between us we chose all of them were beautifully presented. I will go there again
Took my boyfriend for his birthday, having heard great things about this place. Sadly, it was a real disappointment. After great cocktails, we had pretty good starters (steak tartare and a terrine), but the mains of lemon sole and artichoke tart were terrible. The fish was overcooked, and the pastry was overdone with no real effort to make a tart, just some pastry with ingredients assembled on top. Wine was slow to come, and the waiting staff were pretty fed up-looking and not particularly helpful. I really wanted to love this place, as the upstairs bar is great and reviews were good, but there are better chain restaurants in Bath for half the price, and I really found little to love here.
We chose to eat at The Olive Tree as it is attached to the Queensbury Hotel where we staying and were very happy with our decision. There was plenty of choice, the food very well-presented and delicious. The service was friendly, knowledgeable and timely. All in all a very pleasant experience and I would not hesitate to dine there again.
Restaurant was very pleseant, food was very good, though the smart casual was come as you are. The only attire missing from the diners was shorts and flip flops,
Could not complain and when we visit Bath again, will use this restaurant.

food is still good. but customer service lets it down quite a bit. we were seated in bar area despite booking well in advance,- when we asked to move we were told it was full but later diners were seated there. unfortunately the service staff congregated around the bar and we could hear them complaining about other customers- it was quite offfputting. this time on asking someone else we were moved- (to an almostt empty room which was fine), although even then a member of staff complained loudly that our table was being reset. All in all, a shame that the kitchen is let down by front of staff..
My wife and I went to the Olive Tree, Bath to celebrate our honeymoon. We were greeted by Charlie (our waitress) who was lovely. We had berry Bellinis as an aperitif courtesy of Toptable, then a superb butternut squash soup appetiser. I started with a duck and foie-gras terrine (good), she had tuna in cumin with marinaded squid (outstanding). I had lamb with spiced couscous (salty), she had duck (delicious). The veg side was too garlicky. Dessert was sorbet decorated with 'congratulations'!
We had not been to the Olive Tree for some time and were wondering if the high standard in the past would be maintained. Nothing to worry about however as the food and service was if anything better that we remembered. A nice touch was our favourite bottle of wine waiting on our table. Well remembered James!
The Olive Tree in Bath is a pleasant, intimate restaurant in the basement of the Queensberry Hotel. The staff are lovely and the food good - although my main course was a bit too rich (everything my partner had was excellent though). The wine list is varied and the selection by the glass is very impressive. It's pretty expensive and I'm not sure I'd have paid full price (we had a 40% off voucher). Overall a good experience and we'd go again if we were back in Bath.
