PowderMills is a 18th C. Listed Country House Hotel in 150 acres of parks, lakes and woodlands adjoining the battlefield of 1066. The hotel is situated one mile from the historic town of Battle. All 48 bedrooms are individually furnished and each has a luxury en-suite bathroom. The Orangery Restaurant has received many accolades. It is open to residents and non residents for luncheon, afternoon tea. coffee and dinner. The hotel is richly furnished with antiques and logs fires burn in the public rooms in the winter. The hotel can cater for weddings, conferences and private parties up to 300 guests.

The food was very good but the service was poor. I had specified beforehand that this was a birthday lunch I had also requested a birthday dessert non of this happened. Because the service was so bad we did not stop for a coffee or anything else. Would suggest that this hotel employs more than one person to deal with clients.

Beautiful setting. The food is a limited menu but better for that as all the food we had was very good. The service was very very good, friendly but discrete and always attentive.

Short & sharp - absolutely stunning. 


Incredible value & refreshing to have such a unique privately owned non-chain venue. The location is like a breath of fresh air amongst the madness that East Sussex has become - simply beautiful. We felt the pricing was extremely competitive considering where you are. 

My wife myself, chicken parfait bonbons followed by hake. I finished with a lovely refreshing creme brulee with shortbread. More than adequate, fresh, beautiful & clearly cooked in-house with care.

We shared a bottle of wine - Pinot Grigio Rose from the very well stocked list. These are obviously carefully selected & impressive to have the Restaurant Manager able to give an opinion having tasted first hand. Amazing that they are again priced similarly to less good bottles of pub wines - they definitely aren't 'supermarket shelf'!!

Our sincere thanks to the helpful, smiling service staff & of course chef & those keeping this wonderful place going to such a wonderful standard.

The afternoon tea was lovely and service very good and friendly. Spoilt with the state of the toilets. closest to where we were sitting no light - pitch black when doors shut and one had a split through lid. for hotel expect toilets to at least be usable. Had to use others which were quite a long walk and with someone whose walking is limited so really inconvenient . Such a shame

Thank you for your review I appreciate that one of the toilets was out of service, we apologise. The toilet seat had been cracked by a guest, we locked the door to the engaged position from the outside. Unfortunately,the staff member got side-tracked & did not go back to put the out of service sign on the door. It was noted that the light was not working in that toilet. It seems that someone had unlocked the door. The other toilet in the same room did have lighting and was available for use.

Beautiful hotel that has unfortunately been left to become rather tatty. I would also say that the place needs a good clean. The main courses were of a decent standard but very over priced. The scallops at £12 for a starter were a disgrace, they were so small they did not even pass to be called a scallop. The head waiter did deduct these from our bill but clearly did not like to be challenged. It I had visited the lavatories before my meal, I would of walked out. They were an utter disgrace. Broken toilet seat and no lighting. It’s a shame but I would not come back or recommend

Thank you for your review. Our scallops are fresh from Rye and unfortunately until they are opened and prepared cannot guarantee the size.Rye Bay scallops are some of the best scallops harvested on the UK coastline and are used by many seafood restaurants all along the south coast. However we,are looking into the quality with our supplier. The price only reflects the cost of the produce to us. We appreciate that one of the toilets was out of service,we apologise. Someone had unlocked the door

It was only whem I got home I realised how expensive my bill was of £172.13 for 4 perons. Brone down this equates to £40.00 per person., excluding the service charge of £19.13, and a further £10.00 to the waitress not realising the service charge was featured in the menu which I was unaware of. I thought the ordinary wine of Grigio Raose at £19.50 was very expensive!
For a meal not very filling in the three courses was expensive and I am afraid the meal was not good value and as i mentioned earlier very expensive.

This is a beautifully appointed restaurant. Fresh and sparkling clean. Waiting staff were knowledgeable, polite and friendly and attentive without overdoing it. All the dishes we had were delicious and exquisitely presented. We were there for lunch and dinner so we experienced a good range of meat, fish and desserts; all of which were outstanding.

My wife and I very much enjoyed our visit to the Orangery for an evening meal. The service and food was excellent. It was a very pleasant surprise to find that our desserts had been unexpectedly customised to reflect that it was our wedding anniversary!

The food is excellent. I found the dining room a little bland with on this occasion lots of other customers walking through to the other private area dining room .
The plants around the room are fake which is a shame . Bar prices were reasonable and the drinks menu is vast but clear .
The crockery and cutlery were good quality and added to an overall very satisfying dining experience.
Gluten free bread also was available on request.

Food tasted a bit ore prepared. 12.5% added to bill for service is over the top. Used to get chocolates with the tea/ coffee after dinner - now nothing. Used to be one if my like to go to’s - won’t be returning for a while.

Absolutely the best restaurant I have in for a long time. The service, food and ambiance is excellent. I was celebrating my marriage and all my guest enjoyed the meal.
The deco is amazing I just can’t say enough about this place. Highly recommend

This was our favourite place to go but new staff made the meals well below par. It has fallen so far down in my books. outdated and lost now. we will find a new favourite i’m sure. my pegion dish had little substance, trying so hard to look pretty and fell short. raw sprout leaf isnt fun. beef short rib was dry, and lacked taste and seasoning. the ju lacked a punch. the mash was just plain and ugly. the fish was not the most visually pleasing dish with a horrible “crust” but tasted a bit better than average. The Soufflé had “run” out ! the other option was a dessert that was too lemony and sweet again had some style but lacked quality. missed the mark. overall a solid disappointment. We need good strong english chefs who can recover this amazing venue.

This is the fourth time this year that I have visited The Orangery. The first occasion was for my husband's 'wake', followed by a dinner for 8 (just a year ago); later in June I enjoyed a dinner with 11 guests; and, most recently, a dinner for 6. We have not been able to fault the quality of the food or the service. I have no doubt we will return again. It is good to be able to talk without having to raise one's voice!

When we saw that there was a Christmas menu our hearts sank as we envisaged loud parties spoiling a quiet family lunch. In the event the restaurant was quiet, the staff charmingly attentive and the Christmas lunch much better than average.
A lovely hotel with fine grounds.

My guest my husband and I had a very pleasant lunch. A very good menu and the food was beautifully cooked and served. I would love to have my 80th birthday celebrations with my family in the Orangery

We were met and taken to our table in a friendly fashion and all questions well answered. Food was lovely and came at reasonable intervals. All in all, a very good experience. I would definitely recommend this to someone who wanted to done out on a special occasion.

It was our first visit to the Powder Mills Orangery and we couldn't be more pleased with the food and service. My only comment would be for the restaurant to consider more vegetarian options other than mushrooms!

The lighting in the hotel was dismal especially in the bar area. We were looking forward to good fish being reasonably near to Hastings. The cod was tasteless and dry , the chips were reconstituted and the fresh peas were out of a tin. All very disappointing.

We ate in the Orangey Restaurant to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary.

Upon arrival we were greeted warmly & shown to our table, which was next to a window as I had requested.
We found the whole dining experience from the food to the wine & to the attentive staff to be excellent, they couldn’t do enough!

We would certainly recommend the restaurant to any of our family/friends without hesitation.

If you’ve read some of the recent reviews, we’d say ignore them, as we were very pleasantly surprised & can’t understand how anyone can fault it!

The bar service was dreadful. Only one person serving. Additionally the noise level was awful. I was not told that a large wedding party Was also booked. It would have helped (slightly) if we had been seated further away. We are regular visitors to the Hotel, going back a decade. It has (in my opinion) lost its was somewhat.

This was the second time we have lunched here. We especially booked this time to meet up with family members as we wanted them to see the Hotel and eat in the Restaurant.

We were not disappointed - the food and the atmosphere were both very good. The staff were very helpful and pleasant and we got to see "George" again - however, sadly not his lovely display this time.

We will definitely return again.

Food brilliant need to install air conditioning in dining room. Need to have kitchen open till midnight for guests arriving late. Need to open the bar children always want soft dinks. ...don't want to have to go from the pool to reception to ask and then wait while receptionist finds someone to go to bar easier to go straight to an open bar. Staff deserve a medal for patience...37degrees everyone wanting. Drinks and the bar was closed ...how much revenue did you lose
