About

Since opening in 2002 a decade ago, Head Chef Yogesh Datta has received considerable critical acclaim for his interpretation of 'Modern Indian' cuisine at The Painted Heron in Chelsea.

In 2013 The Painted Heron won "Best Indian Restaurant in the UK" and "Best Chef" Pat Chapman Good Curry Guide

Yogesh Datta joyously embraces seasonal produce and his side dishes of strawberry curry, English asparagus and broad bean curry are must-haves when in season.

Fish such as wild sea trout and cod come from Hastings boats; rabbit, squab pigeon, guinea fowl, duck and venison – meats often ignored by Indian restaurants – frequently appear too.

To the rear of the restaurant is an intimate cigar lounge-terrace, where guests can enjoy a pre or post-dinner drink with a selection of Cuban cigars from the restaurant’s purpose-built humidor

The staff were very friendly and the food was lovely
Just check before you go whether they have a large group coming in whilst you will be there as they have visiting holiday groups
If you go away from those groups it is very good

Having lived in India, I was staggered to find a restaurant so authentic in Cheyne Walk! Amazing food and lovely staff.

What an absolute find! We happened on this restaurant while visiting Chelsea. TPH is an elegant restaurant featuring a wonderful balance of mainstream dishes with a sophisticated twist. A perfect example is the samosa appetizer. Light and fluffy on the inside and delicately crisp on the outside. This would have been great on it’s on own but was served with a chickpea stew combining a wonderful blend of herbs and spices that made it one of the best things I’ve eaten in quite some time. The menu features rich, textured curries, perfectly tender meats, fresh seafood and veggie dishes served by a gracious husband and wife team who truly care about your dining experience. All this and not while not putting a big dent in your pocketbook. We will definitely be back.

It was a very slow service, not very friendly possible due to it being a set menu for valentine days. Have used this Resturant over the years I thought the food was good, but paper napkins laminate tables and poor service will probably this Resturant will be removed from our favourites list Sad!!!

The food was fabulous, the restaurant was quite quiet, but as we were 10 we brought our own ambiance. Service was courteous but not overly slick. They were very helpful accommodating my friend's special dietary requirement. I'll be back.

My husband and I have been to The Painted Heron which is now called TPH -- not sure why the name was changed as the original is very nice -- many times. This time the menu was changed and it took us a while to decide what to order. The food is always delicious and we will go back. Our friends really enjoyed it.

I have been coming to this restaurant since 2005. At one dining, there was a film crew from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation doing a program on the restaurant and filming interviews of diners. They picked me and I gave it a glowing review. If they had been there last night, it would have been 100% the opposite of the prior rating.
My last dining here was about two years ago.
We arrived at 1900H on a Saturday night. There were no other diners, When we left at 2045H, there were only two other tables with customers. Our waiter disappeared after bringing the mains and left the premises. The other waiter , who only had two tables to service, ignored us.
Low end Indian restaurants are heavy on the sauces and scant the main course ordered. The new regime at this restaurant is following this formula. The menu has been reduced to at least 50% of what was previously. The food, in the past was outstanding. Now, it is not any better then the average take away.
It had been a warm day. The red wine we purchased for over £70 was at room temperature, at least 24 C. In other words, there is no proper storage of red wine. This is expected at low end restaurants.
I failed to read the latest reviews of this restaurant that on the whole are negative. I will not return and am sad that was once my a great restaurant is no better now then what Marks and Spencer have to offer. The lack of customers on a Saturday night is a clue that people have decided to avoid a restaurant. Only because of my past visits did I ignore this sign. I was wrong to do so.

i've been coming to this restaurant for the past 15 years. Every time I visit London, I eat at Painted Heron. I've never been disappointed yet ! Food is amazing and so is the service.

Excellent value for the money !

The painted heron used to be a favourite local Indian restaurant . We hadn’t been since it changed ownership and we were very disappointed. Poor service , it was v cold in there and so expensive given the tiny portion sizes and lack of flavour . Sadly, we won’t be visiting again .

I went to The Painted Heron on Saturday night with my wife and was very impressed. I very rarely write reviews of restaurants so the fact I'm typing this is an achievement for TPH in itself.

My wife and I have both recently gone vegan and we thoroughly enjoyed both the quantity and quality of the offering. The menu also had an excellent selection of fish and meat so it would be the ideal place for vegans and non vegans to dine together in harmony.

The food itself was excellent and the Peshwari Naan was the best I have ever had. I have eaten in most of the top restaurants of this type in London and The Painted Heron is not out of place in this company.

The only piece of constructive criticism I would make is that not selling vegan wine by the glass seems an oversight when the restaurant is otherwise so well set up for vegetarians and vegans.

In summary, I recommend TPH very highly and we will definitely be returning.

We dined here on Christmas. The ala carte menu was not available. We only had the choice of a vegetarian or non vegetarian set menu. The food was fine, not outstanding. The service was inattentive, yet we were one of the few tables there.

Good food and great service. I would suggest that maybe this restaurant has lost a bit of authenticity by trying to attempt a contemporary menu, for instance the daal had too much going on - there were more vegetables in it than lentils. However overall it was a nice evening and I would definitely return.

Excellent food, and some unusual dishes (e.g. curried strawberry). Good service and well priced drinks (e.g Prosecco @ £6.50 per glass ). We ate on a Saturday night for £25 per head ( drinks extra) and sampled across three courses. Highly recommended.
