Sitting on the corner of Hilton and Tariff street in Manchester’s lively Northern Quarter, The Pen and Pencil takes its name and inspiration from the infamous mid-20th Century bar on East 45th Street in New York, which was popular with newspaper journalists and ad men – the original ‘Mad Men’.

Open seven days a week from 10am until late, the restaurant and bar not only offers a variety of beverages including cocktails, beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks, but focuses on its strong day time offering with great breakfast, brunch and lunch options as well as quality coffee and freshly blended smoothies.

The Pencil and Pencil has an array of events throughout the month with a resident DJ to get the party started every weekend, a weekly quiz night on a Tuesday, and its sell-out Bottomless Brunches! It also offers of rooms for private hire for networking meetings, private parties and launch events.

Had a fantastic lunch at The pen and pencil. Food was fantastic. Staff all friendly and very welcoming.
Fabulous vibe, not far from the city centre... just a 5 minute walk from The Armadale Centre.

Lovely waiting staff can’t help enough. I had the steak and eggs. Steak was absolute perfection and a reasonable price. My second visit and would go again.

We were probably the oldest people in the bar, but the ambience and energy of the other patrons made us remember what it was like to be twenty-something! The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food (of the posh burger variety) was very good, we recommend the polenta chips! Being a Friday night there was a live DJ and he got the mixing and the volume spot on. We live a long way from Manchester, but when we're back there we'll definitely go back to the Pen and Pencil.

Food was good. Didnt need a side due to large portions. Service was great. Loud - but that's to be expected on a Friday. Would recommend to eat here again espescially with the Jan 50% off offer!

I've been to the One and Pencil several times and always had good food and service, it was but slow on this occasion with a 30 min wait for our food to arrive (panicked slightly as I was on my lunch hour!) there were a couple of bigger tables and I think we had all ordered at the same time. Still a great place to go and will go back and recommend wo others.

We really enjoyed the food and the ambience. Everything was perfect...until the DJ appeared. We had already finished our food and we were having a drink by this stage. We couldn't hear each other over the music and as a result, we quickly finished our drinks and left. We would have stayed for more as its a great venue and the staff are very attentive. Sadly the whole experience was let down by the DJ - not necessary on a casual Saturday afternoon.

Lovely brunch at pen and pencil. Portion of pancakes a little on the small side but full breakfast generous. Nice coffee and leaf teas.

The service was slow despite the fact the restaurant wasn’t busy. The food was mediocre. Overall I didn’t think it was good value.

Great place for Brunch.
Service was very good, pleasant and helpful. The eggs Benedict was probably the best I've ever had, and I've eaten a lot of eggs Benedict!
One minor point, and this may not be the restaurant's fault, when I booked I chose a standard table but we were seated at a high top as that's the only option available for a table for two.
Would not hesitate to recommend this lovely bar/restaurant.

Had my first visit to The Pen and Pencil on Monday and used the 50% discount which was excellent! For a burger and drink it came to £7.
However there were some negative aspects to the experience. When we arrived they 'couldn't find our booking', during this conversation the guy mimicked my voice.. slightly rude.
I ordered the chicken burger, in which it arrived incredibly over cooked. The chicken tasted like it had been deep fried numerous times. There was barely any chicken, just a burnt thick layer of crunching coating.

I'm pleased that I didn't pay the full cost for this. I won't be returning there again!

The overall experience was disappointing. I book a table for two at 7:45 and when we arrived, the bar area was busselling and a DJ well into his set. Expecting to be escorted though to the quieter dining area (which looked like it had been booked out for a private function), we were sat under a loud speaker feet away from the DJ box. Feeling unable to fully relax we ordered 2 drink and 2 small plates off the menu (knowing it would be difficult to get food anywhere else without a reservation) and left. I obviously played it wrong booking a table at that time on that day. I just wished P&P could have some how communicated what to expect before hand.

Lovely breakfast, great selection made it very hard to choose.

We both had the American breakfast. Delicious. Boyfriend could have eaten more so maybe a bit small(?) or a larger size option for the hungry hippos. We could have done with selecting sides so if you're with a big eater, and don't want to lose your two sausage patties and an egg, consider that option.

The portion sizes vs price needs addressing. A couple of us got snacks & I know they say 'small plates' but they really are tiny! The fish goujons were 3 pieces, each of which were much smaller than a fish finger - for £7! Really bad value :(

Food was ok but nothing special.Fairly busy, hard to get in and out of the table without stepping over people. I was expecting something a little better in all honesty. Not bad by any means but wouldn't particularly recommend either. Prices fairly reasonable for the area.

Been here twice now and the breakfast was great both times!
Took along some friends the second time after raving to them about how good it was here and they weren't disappointed either!
Will definitley return when I visit Manchester again!
