The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!
Food and setting is superb. Service could have been a little better. Had to chase up on certain condiments and side orders.
Just on the right side of poncy
Great service, really tasty food, lovely setting. ......
The food was exceptional would definitely visit again. Service was very average, friendly but quite slow. It is expensive but as I said the food is exceptional
This is the best roast I've ever had in a restaurant. The food is absolutely unreal! Service is top superb, however, you will get questioned if you ask for more gravy/jus.
We've been to the Poet many times and never been let down. After visiting certain restaurants that have been in the top restaurant lists to visit I have to say they fall well below the food, ambiance, service and value for money we recently received. I'm frightened to post this in case word gets out how good the Poet has become and it becomes to popular. Cant praise it enough
Absolutely outstanding food and service, as always!
top notch food and service
Couldn’t fault the food or service. Was a lovely evening and would highly recommend. Staff were so friendly and accommodating, which made the evening extra special. A perfect date.
Great steak night. Excellent steaks, excellent potatoes, and a very good half carafe of Merlot wine. Will be back again.
A group of six of us met here for Sunday lunch. Lovely welcoming atmosphere and very attentive and amiable staff. The food was amazing, beautifully presented- it looked stunning and tasted even better. Will definitely return!
Excellent food and ambience. Waiting staff were also excellent, very professional and attentive without being over the top (particularly Louisa who was great). Will definitely be going back.
One very small criticism is the use of paper napkins, linen would be more in line with the quality of the restaurant.
I enjoyed my meal here at the weekend. The meal was fantastic and the service was exemplary. I had the hake which was delicious and my husband had the steak which he said was one of the best he has had. All in all a great experience and one I will repeat soon. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant.
We wish we could go more often, Attentive & friendly service, fantastic food & wine. Feels just a like a friendly local. great atmosphere. All the staff treat you well.
The whole overall experience is great. Great food, great service and great ambience and the added bonus of being able to walk there.
First time at The Poet and absolutely no complaints about the quality of the food or the level of service. My only issue is it was incredibly expensive for a gastro pub! In excess of London prices. Such a shame as value for money is always something to consider and in my opinion this was not good value.
Amazing food and service wIth the warmest of welcomes. Lunch or dinner ...always consistently excellent.
The food here never disappoints. A good selection of reasonably priced wines compliment as well as the outstanding gin choices. All the staff made us feel welcome
Great food much of which is locally sourced. An interesting wine list with some absolute gems and the usual fabulous service. We will be back again for more, thanks.
Another fantastic meal with the best service highly recommend. Can’t wait to go back
Amazing food as always with wonderful service. They felt we’d be waiting longer than they’d want us to for our dessert, so they kindly provided us with an amuse bouche, which was gorgeous. The lemon tart was beautiful.
We’ve eaten at the poet quite a few times over the last few years, but Saturday was our first in a while. We both noticed straight away that the standards of food and service, already high, have gone up a good deal further.
Absolutely brilliant place! Don’t miss out - loved it
Great food and service
A very enjoyable evening for my wife and I.
The welcome and the staff were excellent, polite and attentive - increasingly rare these days.
The food - all three courses chosen from the a la carte menu - were an absolute delight, expensive - but worth it.
The 500ml carafe of Merlot very acceptable.
The only downside was too few parking spaces - but a fact of life at this location.
The poet was superb and are looking forward to return, the menu was very good and that shows in the price. It's in a nice location , and the atmosphere in the restaurant is friendly and relaxing.
Outstanding food, drink, atmosphere and service; we loved it, as usual.
It was lovely, we were pleasantly greeted as we walked in , ordered our drinks and where sat at our table. The atmosphere was pleasant , not noisey, even tho they were busy . The food was excellent and very well presented and we were very well looked after by the staff. We had a very enjoyable evening.
Absolutely fantastic place - incredible food and such friendly staff. The head chef took the time of show my little boy around the kitchen and the passion he has for what he does really comes through in everything. Can’t rate it high enough
The poet was absolutely Lovely.we sat outside for the first time the weather being so good and had you're special gin of the day. The food then came always fantastic but our friends had never been and said it was probably the best meal they had ever had. Service always the best.cannot wait to return.
As always fantastic food good service but on the pricey side for a pub but somehow always worth it
Great as always
Had the tasting menu with wine flight and along with the service all were delightful
Amazing food, staff, venue. Made our Anniversary so special. Higher end of prices but every mouthful worth every penny. We will be back.
Absolutely outstanding food at a very good price too. Catered for our every need and very attentive service as well as good wine recommendations to compliment our dishes. Would 100% reccomend to anyone, thoroughly enjoyed dining there.
Great experience ..... not cheap though
Great food and service.
Welcoming and very pleasant atmosphere.
We’ll be back very soon.
This was a birthday treat and all of us had an really enjoyable experience. The presentation of the food was excellent and all the courses were 'spot on'. A great place for Sunday Lunch during any season.
We travel 45mins to go to the Poet for Sunday lunch, we have been many time and never been disappointed. The food is excellent and all the staff are friendly and efficient
Going back in a couple of weeks
Warm welcome, quick and efficient service from a well trained staff. Superb food reminding me of dining in some of the top restaurants in Cape Town.
