The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!
The moment you walk in feel welcome the service and attention to drinks alone was superb with a great choice
The food was excellent all course were faultless good recommendations for wine to accompany and the service was first class
Very high qualtiy food and service for what is a pub - way higher than "gastropub" status - service obliging and professional and reasonable value for Sunday lunch - not cheap but worth it for the quality. You will have the bill increased if you go for the well chosen wine list of course though again the wines are not overpriced (though not cheap either).
Highly recommended if you want something only just short of quality restaurant status but with a more relaxed pub feel.
My wife & I had a very nice evening very good food , service first class very clean tidy establishment would go again well done
First rate, one of the best places around. A special place for me
Interesting venue being more of a restaurant than a pub. Service was first class, friendly and professional. Wine list failed to excite as most were middle of the road “safe” wines.
Love love love this place & it never disappoints. For real foodies only, this is a very special experience. Each plate is not just beautiful & delicious but shows true passion in fine dining. This restaurant really nails it every time. Have eaten here for a romantic meal, a friend’s birthday and a cheeky lunch with the in-laws, I just can’t fault it!!
This was our 2nd visit and we opted for a La Carte. It was our anniversary and we were greeted with complimentary fizz which was a lovely touch. The food was stunning - I had the duck and my wife the hake - it can only be a matter of time before a Michelin star heads their way. The prices are exceptionally good - 2 courses, 2 people, drinks all for about £80. They finished the evening with some chocolates and jellies on a Happy Anniversary chocolate plate. Staff are exceptional too - brilliant place.
We celebrated my Mum's 78th birthday last night at The Poet and it was delightful! We had a 'gin of the week' in the garden when we arrived, and were treated like real ladies by a charming gentleman. The set menu was truly delicious, the mushroom veloute was to die for!
The service at table was 'Michelin star' equality and all the waitresses just delightful! I would highly recommend and will return.
Fantastic restaurant. Food was outstanding and I found it difficult to eat my dessert as it looked like a work of art.
Lovely meal in the garden. Service as good as when we've eaten in the main restaurant.
A fantastic Sunday lunch. Good choice of food which is excellent. The staff are very welcoming and provide an excellent service. We couldn't fault any of the dishes we ordered. A must visit if you enjoy a quality Sunday roast. Highly recommend.
Every visit to The Poet has been very enjoyable. The food is amazing, staff are very attentive and can’t do enough for you. Highly recommend a visit.
This is now our third time for Sunday lunch at The Poet and we are going there again at the end of July. It is my favourite Sunday lunch venue as it is so brilliant. Must try doing the evening menu at some time.
Superb food, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, service was attentive and helpful, wine was very good value, great ambience, highly recommended
The evening started well at the well stocked bar, shown to our table we were supplied with an amuse bouche that heightened our expectations. These were met with a delicious meal served by courteous and well informed staff. I particularly liked the menu with its wine suggestions which we accepted with our starters. The whole experience was a pleasure and we will certainly be going again.
First time we've been on a Saturday night before, usually have Sunday lunch or weekday dinner. As always the food was great. My only complaint is we all thought it was quite expensive. The mains were reasonably priced but the starters and in particular the cheese and biscuits which at £14 were overpriced. Enjoyable evening and would go back.
Dinner for two was a lovely experience! Staff were friendly and attentive, food was delicious, as were thr drinks. We sat outside for drinks before dinner which was very pleasant, and then inside for dinner. Low beams and dark furniture inside, would be cosy in the winter! We took our coffees outside afterwards to enjoy the warm evening, and they brought my fiance a happy birthday plate and candle! Enjoyed!
We went for Boyfriends Birthday. Even though it was a roasting hot day (and v hot inside) the staff where faultless. Professional and friendly. The food was amazing and we really enjoyed our meal. We will be back.
Food is beautifully presented but, as with all restaurants the wine is a bit expensive
Excellent service and amazing food. Great team. A must visit.
Superb all round great food relaxed setting and excellent service
Delicious food, excellent service and attention to detail. Highly recommended
A good meal reasonably priced. The only negative was that they were not happy to accept Open Table dining cheques - even though they are not on the opt-out list on the Open Table website
Great cuisine at a reasonable price, particularly the set menu.
Literally the perfect place for a date night. Couldn’t fault anything.
Fast becoming our favourite special occasion restaurant. Another birthday this time. Food excellent, service excellent.
Starter menu limited and menu overall fish-based and meat options not extensive.
Lamb option described as braised shoulder of lamb and rump but a cutlet was substituted for the rump. Despite that food beautifully presented and staff very attentive but in a laid back way. Raspberry soufflé perfect. Overall excellent and we will certainly return.
Amazing food, wines, service, attention to detail, as usual.
Excellent, best food I tried in this area. Made us feel very welcomed , we enjoyed our experience
could not fault every single mouthful ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS
Highly recommended and worth it despite the lack of parking.
Lovely meal attentive service but not rushed. Nice atmosphere
Lovely food, great service and welcoming atmosphere. We have had an evening meal here and also Sunday lunch, both excellent!
We had The Poet recommended to us and would certainly recommend to friends (and already have). Superb birthday meal for my daughter. The food was outstanding.
We'd never been before, only recently having heard of The Poet. A real treat and good to know there are more and more great places for food in Kent to eat at. Excellent service, delicious food and nice ambience.
Three of us had lunch one Saturday to celebrate my wife's birthday. We all had three courses and everything we had was excellent - served without fuss - and the set menu particularly was very good value. It was all rounded off with proper mint tea - a delight. We have been out for a number of celebratory meals recently but one at The Poet has been the best by far. Highly recommended.
Why go to London when you can have food this good in Matfield?
Excellent food, well presented and served by staff with very good inter-personal skills. Booking will avoid disappointment as it is popular.
Great food, great variety, loved the venue, service was friendly and knowledgeable. Will defiantly be going back
