The Poet at Matfield Ratings and Reviews
We returned to the Poet to impress our friends and all chose the 6 course taster menu with wine pairing. Started with a lovely amuse bouche and then stepped through some very well prepared and tasty dishes, thoroughly enjoyable and relaxed evening, great food, great staff and nice old pub, we will be back and so will our friends,
Birthday celebration lunch today, with great menu choice in set 2 or 3 course selection, a la Carte and Specials board. Service was excellent being attentive and personalised throughout. Highly recommended and we will be back :-)
From the moment we walked in until the moment we walked out we experienced excellent service. The food was absolutely delicious and we all felt we could have chosen anything on the menu. For starters we had the crab, the mackerel and the ravioli...all were delicious. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the hake was delicious. We are so pleased to have found somewhere that serves exceptional food. Can't wait to return!
A warm welcome, with excellent service throughout, all of our food was totally delicious. The tables are not too close together, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly, we can not recommend this place too highly. A very special place to eat all round, we will all be going back there soon.
I have dined at the Poet in Matfield on several occasions, the food is always excellent and the variety acceptable but not extensive. My only criticism is the price and size of the sweets which a small in quantity and at £7 or £8 each, rather expensive. The cheese board in particularly parsimonious.
This was our first visit to the Poet and we were not disappointed. The meal was a 'thank you' to friends for some work done on our house and it was suitably 'special', just right for the occasion. We shared two starters - risotto and quail and between us sampled three mains - lamb, pork belly and chicken. None of these disappointed. Each had a variety of different and interesting ingredients and flavours and the portions were not ungenerous. While prices are not exceedingly cheap, they represent excellent value for money. We shall be back.
Had a wonderful meal at The Poet on Friday night. Beef Carpaccio was outstanding followed by the Hake which was very flavorsome and Tart Tartan for sweet which was cooked perfectly. Highlight of the evening was being made special Gin and Tonics by a very nice waiter who was very passionate about the drink and made a very big effort to ensure our drinks were perfect and explained to us the combinations of Gin and ingredients he put into them. Very impressive.
Warm, friendly welcome. Quickly seated & drinks order taken. We hadn't known it was steak night beforehand but decided on this from an interesting range of meals available. Our choice of starters were quickly delivered after being provided with Aimee bouche to tickle our palates. The steaks and accompanying vegetables were spot on. All delicious. Panna Cota was chosen for dessert. It wasn't like you see on Masterchef, all wobbly but it was a bit like a fruit cocktail. It was very tasty. Overall, this an upmarket pub/restaurant with prices to match and very worthy of a visit for somewhere special.
We were there for Sunday lunch. Including grandparents - 6 of us.
As always the staff were as always really charming, welcoming, attentive and professional. Great pre-lunch drinks - the cocktails and artisan gin selection are particularly notable. Fabulous food to suit all possible tastes of people who genuinely like proper food! I had a lovely beetroot and feta starter - very pretty, tasty and light, followed by a lovely piece of hake - perfectly cooked in a lightly curried sauce with chorizo. Great tarte tatin dessert with nutmeg spiced ice cream - to die for. Great espresso martinis and a nice Pecorino white wine and an even better red for Ribera del Duero.
Particularly good value on sunday with a choice of 2 or three courses at a fixed price and includes very good roasts (beef, pork and chicken on our day) and plety of other options inc vegetarian.
Very good value and overall excellent, as always
I have been wanting to bring my friends here for a while after a fantastic Christmas Day meal a few years ago. My memory of fabulous food and service wasn't tarnished. Cannot fault the presentation, the food tastes as great as it looks. Lovely atmosphere and great service. We all had roast beef that was cooked to perfection, my only fault would be that there was an unequal amount of roast potatoes meaning one of us only had two whilst the others had 3. Very small fault that definitely won't stop any of us returning. My friend is already planning on bringing her partner to test out the normal menu.
We couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate my daughter's birthday! We had been there a few times before and, as expected, the menu choices were amazing and the food was absolutely delicious. This was a Sunday lunch and we all had beautifully presented tasty, colourful and interesting starters followed by stunning main courses (tender beef, succulent chicken and a vegetarian grilled halloumi choice - tasty to boot!). The four side dishes were equally wonderful and so nicely served in attractive covered casserole-style dishes. The vegetarian options for the starter and main were impressive and so nice to see (as so often in restaurants this can be a big let down). The desserts were just as wonderful and picture perfect with a light and tangy lemon posset, pistachio panna cotta and more. What a treat for all of us.
The service was outstanding from start to finish. We were welcomed into the dining area all five of us with a 4 month old baby (who slept right through to the dessert!) and the staff were so professional, cordial and well informed about the menu and drink choices. Everything was presented so effortlessly and without delay. Lastly, the 'gin of the week' and the hosts informed choice led to the best G&T we've had in a very long time! Thank you to the staff, chef and kitchen support who made this a terrific experience and great occasion.
Excellent country pub with high end food. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. Creative and well put together. The wine we had was also absolutely superb, so at a guess the rest is decent too.
The interior is also very charming, if a tad dark but not much they can do given the age of the building (low ceilings).
