The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.

World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!

A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

Fabulous dinner as always.
They remembered it was our anniversary and offered champagne on the house ( we had forgotten) was a very lovely touch.

Of the high end restaurants in our area, this one for me is the best, offering high quality beautifully balanced and finished dishes.
We also felt it was the best value of the high end restaurants we have in and around Tunbridge Wells.

Absolutely outstanding. My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary there last night. Some wonderful touches from the team at the Poet made it very special for us from the moment we arrived. The food was exceptional - the best we have tasted in a very very long time. The service was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable. The wine list was extensive, and again their recommendations were spot on. Great selection of wines by the glass too. My husband is gluten intolerant and they were happy to switch things out if needed and accommodate this easily. We honestly couldn’t fault anything. We can’t wait to go back.

We were really impressed on our first visit and will definitely be returning. The complimentary glass of bubbles and dessert for our anniversary was a really nice touch. The other complimentary dishes which I believe had nothing to do with our anniversary, and therefore par for the course, were also much appreciated. A bit pricier than some restaurants but justified in my opinion

We had a delicious 3 course meal, the staff were super and it was a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday lunch. Its difficult to choose a favourite dish as they were all great but the salmon starter and cauliflower cheese as part of the main were fantastic.

we go a few times a year and it has never disappointed. the speed and politeness of service is especially good. We wanted to get back for the Raducanu match and didn't even have to mention it as the service happens so seamlessly and efficiently. Food great too.

The only minor down point was that we were on a table by the men’s toilet. But some one has to, right? Next time, and there will be a next time I am sure we will be luckier and have a different table.
The service was impeccable and cheerful. The staff were knowledgeable about the food and the wine. The food was amazing to look at and provide an exciting exploration of taste and texture. Absolutely cracking experience. We’ll done the Poet

The best restaurant around this area .the service is spot on as is the ambiance. Just right. Not too formal and special enough to feel you’ve had a treat.. looking forward to our next visit. The varied menu is exceptional. So if you feel like really trying something new or want to fall back on old favourites you are well catered for.

The Poet is my default restaurant in Kent to go to when I want to be guaranteed an excellent dining experience. I was not let down last night. It was as good as ever. In fact my raw tuna starter (the name of which I forget), was one of my best starters ever. All four in my party had excellent meals. If I had a minor quibble, it was that the menu is quite short. Fussy eaters who don't like seafood might struggle. I guess this is a sign of these Covid times.
