Nice setting, great service and fantastic food. We had a lovely Sunday roast and couldn't fault it at all. Among the best we've ever had!
We hope to go back to try the Taster Menu at some point and would certainly recommend The Poet for a great meal out.

Went with friends on Sat night. Had been a few weeks ago when the food was outstanding. It was still great on Saturday but not quite as good as previously. Three of the party had the lamb. Unfortunately they had run out of the cutlets so they were offered extra shoulder which was fine however they all felt that it was only nice but not amazing. Love this place though and already looking forward to going back.

The food here is exceptional. It must be one of the best restaurants in Kent. Local produce, imaginatively prepared. Good wine selection. There is something on the menu for all. They altered the ingredients in one dish for one of our guests without fuss.
The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and nice folk.

Fabulous food with stunning presentation. I have eaten here three times and have been incredibly impressed each time. It's a bit of a drive for us, but my favourite place to eat and well worth the journey.

We went for the steak night - £39 for two with 500ml of Malbec. This was excellent value for beautifully cooked and presented food. I also had the cherry souffle which was possibly the best i have ever eaten - and i've had a few souffles in my time. Service was really friendly and super-efficient. I am baffled as to why Michelin have not yet awarded a star to this restaurant. Sadly we don't live close enough to be regulars but we will definitely be back soon.

Made booking last minute. Was welcomed into a very pleasant busy dining room for Sunday lunch.
Had the rump of beef with all the trimmings. It was well presented and was delicious.
Had a fine bottle of claret, which was carefully aired and served.
The restaurant was busy but not too noisy and the ambiance was excellent.
Have added it to my list of regulars and would recommend it highly.

We tried The Poet after seeing it had good reviews in a Kent magazine. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome and friendly service. The menu had some beautiful choices of dishes. We went for the duck and seabass. We were blown away by the quality of food and cooking skills. The dishes were impeccable!

The service was also great.

I would highly recommend The Poet!

My wife and I have visited The Poet in Matfield 3 times now and will definitely be back! On this occasion we went on a Sunday to enjoy their Sunday roast and oh boy... it was worth it. The roast beef was perfectly cooked and the side dishes were amazing. In particular, the cauliflower cheese.

We visited as part of a weekend away for my partner's birthday. The atmosphere was wonderful, really cosy and inviting but also very well kept and well furnished. We were treated to bubbles and a birthday dessert which were really lovely touches. The staff were fantastic, all very passionate, friendly and knowledgeable - attentive without being overbearing. The only letdown was that we were almost 'forgotten about' between clearing our main course and being offered a dessert menu - we'd lost track of time and it wasn't until a member of staff came over to see if there was anything else we wanted (almost as if to say 'why are you still here?') that we mentioned we hadn't been offered dessert yet - this was quickly remedied (I think we might've been missed during a shift change). The food itself was absolutely brilliant, really well presented and full of flavour! My partner's steak was amazing (of course I tried some!) and my lamb was delicious. Perfect for a special occasion or treat, and I'm sure we'd return if we're ever back in the area.

I never write reviews. I wrote one once about 5 years ago, but on this occasion I feel I must. I was so impressed that I thought it was worthy of an 'excellent' review. The food and service were outstanding. I can count on one hand the number of meals in my life that were as tasty as the food was at The Poet. I eat out frequently and go out of my way to try and find great restaurants. This one did not disappoint.
Well done to whoever owns/manages.... you have invested in terrific, friendly and talented staff.

Visited 'The Poet' last Friday night for the first time. It was unusually quiet but this didn't bother us. In fact, the ambiance was lovely for a date. The food and service were amazing. My husband had the steak and I had the bass. Both were beautifully cooked (the sauce for the bass was divine). I had the souffle for desert. Fluffy and delicious (however I think I would have preferred ice cream instead of cream but it was still lovely). Hubby had a liquid pudding, an espresso martini which went down extremely well. The service was amazing. Such friendly and helpful bar and waiting staff. We can't wait to go back.

I booked a table for my fathers birthday and I made an error with the booking.
The staff were so wonderfully accommodating about it and we had the tasting menu.
Everything from the ambiance to the exquisite food was just perfect.
Staff were friendly, funny and offered just the right amount of interaction.
Food was outstanding and the restaurant is so quaint. Not to mention the 40+ gin’s there are to try!
Such good value for money.
I love this place and cannot recommend it highly enough.
Thank you guys so much for making a memorable evening for my family.

This was my second visit to The Poet in Matfield and whilst it wasn't as good as my first visit it was still fantastic. We seemed to get a lot more attention the first time we were there with the waiters and waitresses far more interested in us than this visit. Perhaps it was because it was a Saturday night and they were very busy? Nonetheless, my food was brilliant. My wife didn't enjoy her halloumi main course and ultimately didn't eat it but the front of house staff took care of that with no quibble which was great to see. All in all a really nice place to eat.
