The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.

World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!

A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

Great lunch.sat on table for two in window which was lovely on such a bright sunny day.
The service was second to none with all staff being very knowledgable on the menu.
My only criticism was Yorkshire’s too salty for our taste and too much mustard in cauliflower cheese. Other than that food superb

Food was excellent as per usual, although the main course could have been hotter. Service was outstanding, the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable.
This was our first time in the annex dining room, we found the overall lighting too bright.

Outstanding service and amazing food! It was only our second time visiting The Poet and yet again it was absolutely amazing experience. The food was stunning from starter to main and dessert and the service is incredible - very attentive and yet not intrusive at all. Highly recommend for any occasion or just a lovely evening out.

Our waitress was outstanding. Attentive but not overdoing it. She knew all about the food and named all the cheeses 🧀 and there were lots of them ! Her name is Jess.

Lovely food, service and decor.
Food possibly a little over seasoned (could just be my palette).
Wasn’t told table was need back by 3:00pm (we booked for 1:00pm).
Still a lovely lunch and will def use again.

Fantastic Sunday lunch; whenever we have a special occasion, The Poet is the go-to place! We were particularly impressed with the fruit and berry crumble which we hadn’t had for pudding before.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The quality and good nature of the staff was an added bonus .

The one and only complaint is the comfort of the seating.

You have a collection of well worn chairs. Perhaps we were unlucky but they were past their best and uncomfortable.

Sorry but there you are!!

I have been here twice now with my girlfriend for date night. Both times, the food has been exquisite with incredible service. Not cheap, but I’ve paid far more for far worse. An incredible experience both times. Thank you all for two incredible evenings.

Great food, service etc. We both had sea bass which was delicious but the portion was very small. It was beautifully cooked and presented but 4 mouthfuls and it was gone

Another excellent meal at this firm favourite - this time for New Years Eve. The food was stunning, a masterclass in taste and balance from chef Petrus! The service from Andrew, Simon, George and the rest of the crew was warm and hospitable as always. Looking forward to our next visit...!

Seamless service with just the right balance of attentiveness combined with the chef’s obvious passion for creating superb dishes meant that this was, once again, an exceedingly enjoyable evening. TVM to all.

It felt like trying to hard to sell us more food and drinks...
The chef did not allow my 5 year old son to take away his left over food, which is annoying and such a waste of food and money.
Not great experience overall.

Wonderful experience , as per usual. The welcome we received from Andy and the team was great - we had our usual aperitifs and then a wonderful three course meal .

There is a personal touch that very rarely occurs in other restaurants - we had a magnificent Christmas Eve.

Came for lunch on Monday 23rd December. My partner was concerned as the sign outside suggested it was closed on Mondays! However all was well when the open sign was flipped over and we were warmly welcomed (seated near the fireplace near the bar with a few drinks) despite being a little early. Service was not pretentious, but nor was it too informal - it was what I would describe as “professional, with a smile”. If you are not a regular and expect more then you may need to be more forward/extroverted.
The Poet is a narrow, small gastropub with a bar at the front and the dining area just behind the bar which is long and narrow - 2 tables either side of a walkway. Rustic feel with exposed beams - nice setting for a wintry meal.
Starters were tasty , couldn’t fault them at all. The beetroot dish was excellent and the fishcake with fried egg was very well cooked and delicately spiced.
Mains were very good too. I remember the sides more however - the dauphinoise potatoes were excellent and the triple cooked chips were chunky and fluffy as you’d expect.
The venison dish was good but didn’t blow me away, though the vegetables were well cooked. The fillet steak was very good but couldn’t say it was something which I was wowed by.
Desserts were excellent- both of us had the raspberry soufflé, which was executed perfectly . Couldn’t be faulted at all , except that the lemon sorbet made it a bit too sweet - would have preferred something as simple as a vanilla ice cream scoop to balance the sweetness of the soufflé and raspberry coulis which accompanied it.
The bill was settled promptly with some “arms length pleasantries” with the (assumed) owner. Not cheap but didn’t feel short changed - it was a high quality affair.

Have been before and was equally pleased with this visit. The food is interesting, creative and really tasty. One appetiser came with some spicy dressing that was not expected but this was changed very quickly with a non spicy dressing. Hot raspberry souffle for dessert was the highlight. Lovely!!

We love The Poet. Wonderful food, service and ambiance as always.

The evening was made all the better because the local choir was singing carols in the bar.

Thank you Andy, Simon, George and all in the kitchen (who we’ve never met!)

Happy Christmas to all

If I could give more stars for Food and Service I would. It definitely was one of the best Sunday roast we ever had. The ambience was perfect and relaxed and the service next to none. This definitely will become our regular place for a lazy Sunday roast.
