The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

First Class. Amazing food, friendly staff. Everyone should go.
Wonderful lunch , good service, Loved the venison carpaccio ( amazing!).
Can’t wait to have a repeat visit.
Beautiful pub where the food is exquisitely presented. The service was impecable and the waiters friendly. The only negatives were that our table was in an awkward corner and it was tricky to access, and we were served a side of "elastic" cabbage that was impossible to cut and quite chewy. However, the complementary bread, amuse-bouches and sweet treats were absolutely gorgeous. Will certainly go back.
First visit and will definitely be back. Food and service just outstanding. Highly recommend.
Outstanding food. Very expensive but worth every penny
Most amazing food, lovely atmosphere and fantastic service . I can't rate this high enough.
Drove there on a very cold foggy evening, was worth the drive ! Exceeded expectations
Best place we have ever been to, well worth the journey
Amazing food and such considerate service from the team. Definitely one of the best roasts we have ever had!
Outstanding service and lovely food. Very impressive.
We visit The Poet for special occasions with special friends.
The cuisine is worth its Michelin star. Andy & his team are superb too.
Tip....choose the paired wine with the meal course you have chosen. They haven't disappointed yet.
See you again.
The customer service was excellent. And the food — exquisite! I’d highly recommend for a special occasion
Outstanding meal, as usual. We enjoyed the touches of the bread and the amuse bouche and the quality of the fish - both mackerel and bream was outstanding. Always lovely to be at the Poet .
We eat fairly regularly in this pub/restaurant, which we are lucky enough to have in our village.
We have never been disappointed in the food or the service and thoroughly recommend it .
The post was fantastic! The food felt so special, very much a fine dining experience. The service and environment were also fantastic! We will definitely be back!!
The food was delicious and the service just right, I was very impressed
Excellent food and great service.
Thoroughly enjoyable .
Sunday lunch was outstanding.
Outstanding food and service. Can't wait to go back again
The Sunday roast was to die for!
Lovely traditional pub, imaginative menu, great food. This is a treat, Sunday roasts were excellent. It is pricey when you add on all the extras but it is definitely worth it. Excellent drink and wine options, lovely chilled ambiance
Once again the Poet at Matfield delivers on every level.
The Sunday Roast is sublime and worth very modest cost.
Whilst the "roast" is always excellently cooked I am a great advocate of the way the accompanying vegetables are prepared and taste. Every aspect of the dish is perfect and it is clear to see that the chef only uses the best quality ingredients.
Whilst neither of us was in the mood for a bottle of wine on this occasion the wine list is quite extensive and contains some very excellent wines for all tastes.
The Poet is ideal for relaxed dining. There is nothing pretentious about the restaurant or service experience. The staff warmly greet all diners and the resultant service is attentive and efficient.
Its all about the quality of the food.
My husband & I both love eating in highly regarded restaurants.
However we unfortunately were disappointed with the food atThe Poet
We found all the courses far too fussy.
In fact I felt quite sick when I left the
My husband was disappointed in the
small amount of Sirloinn that was on his plate !
I absolutely love fish but for me the Hake was ruined by all the numerous other flavours additionally on the plate !!Sorry, we won’t be back anytime soon.
My wife & I had a brilliant time at the poet. The food was amazing, staff were fantastic and we’ll definitely be going back.
Celebrated a very special wedding anniversary at The Poet! Yet again, another amazing meal - the food is absolutely subliminal, an experience of carefully balanced flavours to be savoured… And service is always top notch. A real gem of a restaurant in a small Kent village!
We really enjoyed the poet. Great and easy going service. The “chef compliments” nibbles were very well received and tasty too. I’d highly recommend to others.
Sublime food, lovely ambience, and fantastic service. A memorable meal.
Always a lovely place to visit for Sunday lunch , , food is excellent , including staff and owners
Outstanding as always!
This is our go to restaurant when we fancy a treat….as it’s not on our doorstep , we travel about an hour to get here, but it’s soooo worth it. Sundays especially! The whole experience is amazing but I’d just order a wheelbarrow of cauliflower cheese if I could…never tasted one like it..it’s incredible! Everything is executed with precision from the welcome at the door, to the attentive waiting staff and of course the food! Superb!
One of a very few excellent quality restaurants in West Kent
Food was fantastic.
Felt very respected as customers.
We had the New Years Eve 6 course Tasting Menu and were very impressed. The star of the show was the first course, a tomato, cashew nut and chimchurri dish that had layer upon layer of flavours. The other courses did not disappoint. The Poet has an excellent choice of wines at all prices. A visit is highly recommended
Disappointing meal laden with salt .Not one course out of eight was tasty.
Way overpriced at £105 per head plus wine. Wine priced at average restaurant prices. Not sure how The Poet has achieved all it’s accolades. Would certainly not be on my recommendations list.
I am not a ‘moaning minnie’ and do not mind paying over the top for good food.
Always outstanding!!! Best restaurant in the entire south east!
Excellent on all counts. We couldn't find fault and will be back soon!
Reunion for the family. Great food and fantastic service
Second visit, just sensational. Truly delicious food. Flavours and presentation spot on. Excellent service
Attentive service, friendly staff and great food. What’s not to like? Keep meaning to go more often and will make it one of my 2022 musts!
With the reduction in reservations due to covid cancellations, there was a shortage of diners at the later time. However everything else was as excellent as we have become to expect from the staff the service and of course the food
Brilliant, as ever; thanks to Andy et al for accommodating for our late booking change.
We had a very special time, delicious food, very comfortable surroundings and lovely friendly staff. Super!
