The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!
Amazing food and really caring staff who looked after us briliantly. Definately coming back.
Really nice and helpful staff, top quality food, a little expensive but you get what you pay for.
Excellent Sunday lunch. Great service, 3 perfect courses. Will definitely re- Book.
We had a very nice dinner here and found the food and service to be excellent. We will definitely be going back.
Fantastic meal. Bit pricey but it was my daughters 21st.
Staff were superb
Exceptional food and service. First class. Parking is an issue.
The tasting menu with the wine flight is not the cheapest night out, but it makes a special occasion even more special. The food quality and presentation is exceptional. The service is friendly, attentive and informative without being overbearing or pretentious. The Poet may be a pub, but this is top restaurant food and service.
Absolutely fantastic lunch at The Poet.
All the staff were warm, welcoming and professional.
Food was of an incredibly high standard, and wonderfully delicious.
I could not fault it.
Highly recommend to anyone who wants Michelin-starred standard without the prices.
Love the Poet. Have been many time and it services and quality is always guaranteed.
Absolutely stunning restaurant for special occassions
Food always amazing, never disappoints, great deals and steak night a true winner every time
We were told about the Poet by our Taxi driver and thought we would try out Sunday Lunch. Wow we loved it the pub is very lovely the service could not be better, even down to being served the food with the waiter wearing White gloves ! We will be back very soon
Coming into the Poet you order your drinks opposite where the entrance door is, it is a bit narrow which is a bit inconvenient. We were fairly quickly shown to our table. We were pleasantly surprised by a very rich Sunday lunch. Meat was cooked well and nicely presented. Sides are plenty and very tasty. Service was very good, white gloves are worn when bringing in the plates and dishes. Very stylish. Can certainly recommend the Poet for a nice Sunday Lunch.
Having eaten at the Poet on a few occasions it is always reassuring to know that the quality of food and service is going to be excellent.
Every visit we have made has always fulfilled our expectation for an exceptional meal.
Sunday lunch is particularly of excellent value. The service is always professional, pleasant and attentive.
It is absolutely clear that everyone has a vested interest in providing the very best of customers experiences.
Outstanding food and service. Wicked Negroni. It is expensive but worth it for a treat. Kindly gave us some extras as we were kept 15 or so minutes before being seated
Highly recommended. We ate a la carte on a Friday. The food was excellent, there was a good range of locally sourced drinks and the service was attentive. I would happily eat there again and again. Make sure to visit if you’re in the area.
Brilliant. Food quality , service, personal touch always top notch.
Easy access with parking if not too busy. Basic decor. Pathway could be tricky in poor weather. Food very good. Service v good.
My girlfriends and I had a scrummy lunch yesterday, the only thing I would say is that it's rather dark and we were seated in the corner but would have preferred the window seat with some natural daylight. Perfect for dinner I'd say or a cold wintery day.. Thank you.
Great atmosphere, food and service. Parking is limited
Delicious food, very nice presentation, very nice people with personal attention
Well portioned, fantastic menu and worth the extra few quid over a chain. Polite and knowledgeable staff, attentive but not intrusive.
The quail was superb and a well balanced starter, followed by a fantastic duck, cooked to perfection. Even tempted by desert, tarte tatin which was just sweet enough without being over the top. A good selection of wines to accompany the dishes.
Not my first time and definitely not my last.
Food and setting is superb. Service could have been a little better. Had to chase up on certain condiments and side orders.
Just on the right side of poncy
Great service, really tasty food, lovely setting. ......
Food was great but seriously over-priced for a weekday lunch, seated in the garden. £95 for 2 main course, 2 desserts, 1 Prosecco & 1 soft drink.
The food was exceptional would definitely visit again. Service was very average, friendly but quite slow. It is expensive but as I said the food is exceptional
This is the best roast I've ever had in a restaurant. The food is absolutely unreal! Service is top superb, however, you will get questioned if you ask for more gravy/jus.
We've been to the Poet many times and never been let down. After visiting certain restaurants that have been in the top restaurant lists to visit I have to say they fall well below the food, ambiance, service and value for money we recently received. I'm frightened to post this in case word gets out how good the Poet has become and it becomes to popular. Cant praise it enough
Absolutely outstanding food and service, as always!
top notch food and service
Couldn’t fault the food or service. Was a lovely evening and would highly recommend. Staff were so friendly and accommodating, which made the evening extra special. A perfect date.
Great steak night. Excellent steaks, excellent potatoes, and a very good half carafe of Merlot wine. Will be back again.
A group of six of us met here for Sunday lunch. Lovely welcoming atmosphere and very attentive and amiable staff. The food was amazing, beautifully presented- it looked stunning and tasted even better. Will definitely return!
Excellent food and ambience. Waiting staff were also excellent, very professional and attentive without being over the top (particularly Louisa who was great). Will definitely be going back.
One very small criticism is the use of paper napkins, linen would be more in line with the quality of the restaurant.
I enjoyed my meal here at the weekend. The meal was fantastic and the service was exemplary. I had the hake which was delicious and my husband had the steak which he said was one of the best he has had. All in all a great experience and one I will repeat soon. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant.
We wish we could go more often, Attentive & friendly service, fantastic food & wine. Feels just a like a friendly local. great atmosphere. All the staff treat you well.
The whole overall experience is great. Great food, great service and great ambience and the added bonus of being able to walk there.
First time at The Poet and absolutely no complaints about the quality of the food or the level of service. My only issue is it was incredibly expensive for a gastro pub! In excess of London prices. Such a shame as value for money is always something to consider and in my opinion this was not good value.
Amazing food and service wIth the warmest of welcomes. Lunch or dinner ...always consistently excellent.
