The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.

World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!

A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

On balance this was overall the best meal I have had at the Poet. I have been eating there annually for about five years. My party (of three) all had excellent starters and mains. The ambience was excellent as was the bonhommie of the management and waiting staff. Impressive measures had been taken to make customers feel save as far as Covid is concerned. Our only disappointment was one of the desserts which was described as a pistachio panna cotta. This was far removed from being a panna cotta and had been made from pistachio paste. It had the consistency of blancmange. Despite the let down with one of the desserts which appeared to be an aberration this is an excellent establishment that I thoroughly enjoy visiting. It is my 'go to' place when I want a nice meal out and I thoroughly recommend it.

What a fabulous experience we had on Sunday evening at The Poet at Matfield.!! A warm welcome including our temperatures being taken! My Halibut with a Lobster Bisque was sublime and the Roast Beef and trimmings was by all accounts delicious. My guest was blown away by the carrots and was able to say that in her 88 years she had never tasted anything like them - perfectly al dente, sweet, spiced and the most incredible colour!! Sticky Toffee Pudding with the most beautiful Nutmeg Ice cream to finish. We loved the fact that all wines were recommended for each dish and could be bought by the glass. Superb service giving the restaurant a wonderful relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I will definitely go out of my way to go again!!

Incredible food, service and a great night all round. I notified the Poet that we were eating there for our anniversary when I made the booking and they gave us 2 complimentary glasses of prosecco when we arrived, which was completely unexpected and a really nice touch. They also gave us a small but very special dessert plate to say happy anniversary as well, on the house. I can't recommend this place enough. The service is impeccable, the food is exceptional and the atmosphere was lively and not stuffy or stuck up.

We went to the Poet for our 2nd wedding anniversary and I must say was so impressed with the food. My wife described it as the best roast dinner she had ever had. This was before the staff kindly took her plate back to amend her beef as it was too rare for her liking. The staff were all so professional and friendly. Will certainly be returning and have already recommended to family and friends.

First visit. Excellent food, but decor, ambience and more intrusive Covid restrictions than we have experienced elsewhere a negative. Service fine.
Not cheap, but food worth it.
Would likely come back for the food alone.

10/10 for food and service. Faultless really. We will return when your tasting menu comes back. The atmosphere was a little strange with the Covid scenario going on but the staff dealt with it excellently. The only problem I found was my chair was wobbly and uncomfortable. I had to swap with my partner.

Wonderful! We hadn’t been to the Poet since Christmas Eve and it was so great to see Andy and the team again. They have done their best to make the COVID provisions unintrusive and the restaurant feels its usual self. The food was utterly magnificent as ever; we had the sharing beef and it was exceptional - huge, but so flavourful and the sides were very refined and abundant.

Great service, friendly and attentive staff.
Felt that lemon thyme on carrots was rather strange, and unsatisfying. Potatoes were served cold.
I felt that the braised lamb had been reheated, therefore dried out. Quite disappointed
