The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!
Amazing service, and amazing food! Will definitely be back.
Amazing food - just blown away. Super service - what a fantastic pub - we will be back!
This was our second visit and it gets better every time. This place offers fine dining in the heart of Kent. The service was impeccable and the food... wow. My first course was a mushroom veloute with a poached egg in the middle and was the best plate of food I've had in 2019. All our guests were amazed how good it was and it was their first visit and I suspect not their last. Can't recommend it more highly
We had an excellent meal - interesting menu and delicious food. We hope to be back soon
Just perfect! Delicious food and attentive service!
As always a super place to both eat and drink, food is exceptionally good.
Excellent, great food, great service, we always have a good time at the Poet.
Absolutely lovely return visit to the Poet. I brought my grandparents for a Sunday lunch last year and was hoping the standard would still be excellent for my partners birthday. We were not disappointed, cannot fault the experience
Again, a fantastic meal at The Poet - we were looked after from the moment we walked in to when we left. Efficient, friendly, attentive, knowledgeable. Great choice of gin followed by lovely wine that was well priced. The food was delicious and could not be faulted at all, with a great explanation of what we were getting.
I can't praise The Poet enough - thank you.
We came for the Sunday 3 course and could not fault a dish. This is not a gastropub, it is a restaurant on Michelin scale. Very good value for the food standard also, we will be back.
Great service. Polite and attentive staff. Food was delicious.
Very good meal. Service very good . Would recommend and return!
Excellent food partnered with carefully chosen wine, a great craft gin menu and helpful service. What could be better!
Lovely atmosphere, fabulous food that looks like a picture and lots of very friendly staff.
Would definitely visit again.
Everything was as we remembered it from a previous visit. We thought the food was certainly a cut above some of the 6 rated Good Food Guide recommendations.
Our only criticism was that as we were early arrivals the restaurant hadn’t had time to warm up.
Keep up the good work, we will be back in the future.
Heard the food was great and boy was they right, it was excellent!!
The noise was made by a group of diners on the table behind us. Lucky we had only desert to eat.
Great service and wonderful meal. Is a little expensive however worth every penny.
We arrived on time and were pushed through to order our meal rather than enjoying a drink and relaxing
The best meal I’ve had with a service level to match.
From the second my wife and I walked through the door we were greeted with a warm smile and outstanding professionalism from every member of staff. This was backed up by food that was without question the highest quality I’ve ever had. What an amazing restaurant to have only 20 minutes from my front door. Well done to all involved!
Wonderful food served in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. We hope to return soon!
As always The Poet never fails to deliver. Yes, you could eat for less but you get what you pay for. We are so lucky to have it in our village. Great, we can walk there.
We arrived late because of road traffic accidents into village, but were welcomed and shown straight away to our table, with excellent service and a quick round of drinks. Menu is interesting and wine list different but appears well balanced. Orders were taken and dinner followed with unobtrusive service, delicious food, appreciated and liked by all. Highly recommended.
Absolutely brilliant experience. Excellent food, personable, professional service all wrapped up in a cosy atmosphere. Can't recommended it enough.
The set lunch at £23 for two courses was excellent, sophisticated and full of flavour
Service was very good to start off but we had to keep asking for attention after the main courses were finished
I love the relaxed feel of this place - I'd definitely return to try more dishes. The confit duck was excellent and the desserts were so tasty! Service was well-timed and friendly, always with a smile.
We came here on Sunday. Food was amazing. Staff friendly and welcoming. Amazing will be back. Love that there was game on the menu.
Well looked after and excellent service. Food was fabulous and they looked after our two young children very well
We visited for a Family Birthday lunch and all decided on the set menu.
Everything was nicely presented and tasty. We do have big appetites so ordered some side dishes.
This proved a good idea as there was little in the way of "green veg".
The whole menu was really good and a lovely dessert. Will be happy to visit again.
What an outstanding restaurant. The entire menu is outstanding. The staff are both friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The quality of food is quite frankly amazing. But this is not cheap pub food. This is a menu to treat yourself, expect to pay £50 per head for a two course lunch with soft drinks. Don’t be put off though I feel it’s worth every penny.
Fantastic restaurant that is truly good value for money. The food (and service) is exceptional. I would highly recommend.
Just occasionally, the stars align with everything about a restaurant that just bowls you over. Why have we not been here before! The Poet implies something about artistry and imagination, which is exactly what you get here. The menu is intriguing but the reality is dishes which are clever in their combinations of ingredients, and brilliantly executed. Even taking the set menu, there is no compromise in how exquisitely the foaming broth of the tortellini is made for instance.
Combine this wonderful food with courteous but relaxed service in a lovely old pub for ambience, and you have an exceptional experience. There are even wine recommendations for each dish.
So not surprising that it's full on a Tuesday lunchtime. We will be looking for excuses to be back.
This is not the first time I have eaten at the Poet, the food as always was very good and all 3 guests cleared their plates. The service by and large was good. One small gripe was that I was overcharged for a sweet, and the waiter gave the distinct impression that it was my fault. If the Poet uses an arcane pricing structure THEY need to manage it properly.
Outstanding in every way as usual!! Food was exquisite. Thank you.
Wow, just stunning . The whole night was so lovely, from the service our waiters were just on point so helpful and knowledgable and the food was so beautifully presented and tasted amazing . Will definitely be coming back and recommending this place to all my friends and family . Just fantastic .
Amazing food and really caring staff who looked after us briliantly. Definately coming back.
Really nice and helpful staff, top quality food, a little expensive but you get what you pay for.
Excellent Sunday lunch. Great service, 3 perfect courses. Will definitely re- Book.
We had a very nice dinner here and found the food and service to be excellent. We will definitely be going back.
Fantastic meal. Bit pricey but it was my daughters 21st.
Staff were superb
