The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.

World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!

A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!

Another delicious meal at the Poet at Matfield. Cannot fault the food, the service and the incredible welcoming feel of the place.

Although a 20 minute wait, the Raspberry Soufflé with Orange Ice Cream is worth it. I won’t be sharing next time 😉

The Poet @ Matfield is an excellent restaurant, run extremely well by Andy and his staff. It is a lovely spot, the food is outstanding with a great wine list and the service is wonderful. They adhere to the COVID-19 restrictions extremely well. They are also renown for their extensive range of gins. It is one of our favourite places to eat.

Celebrated our son’s Graduation here last year and it was excellent. I chose to “celebrate “ a big birthday here this week and once again it was superb.
Staff are welcoming and friendly and at the same time very professional. The food is outstanding and there is a great choice. The 2 or 3 course lunch menus are excellent value for money.
Looking forward to returning before too long with or without something to celebrate!!

Yet another excellent dinner - Petrus' dishes are just subliminal! Service is warm and friendly as always, and Covid-safe precautions are taken seriously unlike the lip service in many other restaurants. Top marks to The Poet!

Fantastic welcome and service- one of a few restaurants/pubs that seemed to be taking Covid seriously and following government requirements.
The service and food ( Late Sunday dinner) was perfect.
Highly recommend and would definitely re visit for dinner if we were in the area again.

The Poet is a must go and eat here cosy gastro pub, with a fantastic quality Sunday roast menu, with the best service and is incredibly good value for money, it’s fine dining without the price tag. I would highly recommend the Poet to anyone within an hours drive and beyond, yes the food is a little more expensive than what you might pay elsewhere at about £40 per person for 3 courses and a drink but it doesn’t disappoint and in my mind it’s an absolute bargain, you could put the Poet in the middle of London, charge £60 a per person for 3 courses with a drink and people would still rave about it, it’s that good, the best gastro pub I’ve eaten in across the South East.
Thank you to both the front of house and kitchen staff at the Poet for a superb meal on Sunday.

Menu choice is good and covers most dietary requirements. It is little things that make The Poet excellent, such as waiters delivering the food knowing what you ordered without having to ask, they are also there when you want them, but not when you don’t.

We will definitely go again.

This restaurant is the best in the area. The food is exceptional. Well presented and delicious. The portions are fairly modest but that is not a problem as the quality is superb, means that 3 courses are very manageable. The cheese course( on the al a carte menu, was shared by two of us , and was ivery good 5 English cheeses, shared as a fourth course rounded up an excellent meal. The coronavirus restrictions were very well managed and no problem with the ambiance. Will definitely return.
