The Poet at Matfield
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!
A warm welcome awaits diners from front of house manager and co-owner Andy Urbanek and his team. We look forward to seeing you!
You have it right..we enjoyed the experience, very tasty food. I would surly come back and pass the experience on to all.
Delicious food beautifully presented. Very friendly service.
Excellent service & great food, we went on the Tuesday steak nights & couldn’t fault anything, we even parked right outside which isn’t always the case!
Brilliant as usual. Food was great as was the service. We will be going back soon.
Outstanding food and service!!! Highly recommended
Dominics birthday family meal
Good food as usual, but the service was just not as good as in previous visits. My wife's chair was repeatedly knocked by one of the waitresses, without any apology. We had to ask a second time for some drinks and then twice for the bill. We also had some rather loud diners sitting near us!
This was our first time at The Poet, having received numerous recommendations. We were aware that we had a two hour slot at the table but the speed at which food appeared then plates disappeared made it feel like we were a bit rushed. The food itself was outstanding but a little pricey. We hadn’t finished our wine at the end of the two hours and had to leave the table but were lucky enough to take it with us to a couple of sofas by the bar. Had we not been able to be seated I would have been very disappointed. Overall a pleasant experience but not one that we could justify too often because of the cost.
Every time we come to The Poet we have always had a highly enjoyable evening. Food is so delicious coupled with a warm, professional welcome and good service the whole time we are there. Simply outstanding!
Exceptional food- the best meal available anywhere!
Always absolutely outstanding. Most delicious food, perfect service and wonderful ambience. So lucky to have such a gem on our doorstep.
Great service great food great ambiance
Fabulous food! A busy evening but still faultless service. Great ambiance! Truly a special treat!
Just exactly what you’d expect/want from an upmarket country pub with fantastic attention to detail and good all round vibe. Will be back!
Ambience was nice.
Service was good and staff were very pleasant.
Food was good. Had the Sunday Roast... the wild boar was a little dry and the carrots have a strange flavour to them (so did not eat them). The greens and the cauliflower cheese were lovely.
The Halibut was delicious.
Dessert was delicious.
This lovely restaurant serves the best Sunday Lunch EVER. Delicious and great choices. Always a treat to get a table there. The staff are also amazing. My favourite!!
Have eaten at the Poet several times and every dish has been exceptional.
Choice of starters a bit limited especially if you do not like fish or want a warm starter. Mains were tasty but additional vegetables would have been nice. Of course you can order these as sides but should have been part of dish. Dessert good choice. Nice place, good service.
Excellent food and attentive but not intrusive service. Lovely blend of flavours in the heritage tomato and smoked burrata starter and the cote de boeuf was amazing. Really good top end gastro pub - well worth a visit.
Very impressed - was truly special meal!
Yet another fabulous meal from Petrus and team! Food was absolutely stunning, from presentation through to the subliminal balance of flavours - worthy of Michelin Star status if ever they wanted to... All of this coupled with good, friendly service, make it a real gem in the Kent dining scene!
One of us had the fixed menu and one ‘a la carte’, we both had matched wines.
Food was very good.
Fabulous Sunday lunch. Having read great reviews as keen to give it a go and wasn't disappointed. Will be back soon. Lovely atmosphere, arrived early and sat in the leather sofas having a relaxing drink. Service professional and attentive.
The food was fabulous. Starters were well presented and tasty - smoked haddock fish cake and jumbo quail. Has the shoulder of lamb and shoulder of pork and both were well presented and really tasty. Ample veg - I could always eat more roast potatoes but that’s more greed than need. The cauliflower cheese was a triumph one of the best I’ve had. There is a charge of £6 for a rather small extra ‘jug’ of jus which didn’t bother me but I know would have set my mother off had she been with me! To be fair it probably wasn’t needed as ample jus on the plate but being Northern I love ‘gravy’.
I’m not a desert person and I was very full. But gave it a go as good value and wanted to try them and glad I did. Had the passion fruit desert which was beautifully presented and light and refreshing. A creme anglaise and meringue type desert but very dainty and upmarket. My friend had the fruit crumble which was a generous portion and assured me was very tasty - it certainly looked good.
All in all a great experience. It was cosy but tables were well spaced and good ambience with a mix of some young families. Incidentally noticed the kids burger and chips one of the children was having and it looked amazing I could almost fancy it myself.
Looking forward to returning soon.
Our third visit to The Poet, it's our favourite place at the moment.... the whole experience is wonderful..... 👍😍
Superb service, excellent food, very good wines (at very reasonable prices), a quiet and spacious set of rooms - an outstanding restaurant and one of the best in the area. Will definitely go back. £120 for dinner for two with two courses and two glasses of wine each.
Haven’t been here for a while but it has seriously upped its game from good to very good. Pretty fine dining at a non fine dining price. Slightly reminded me of Tom Kerridge’s Hand & Flowers but nowhere near the price. Service excellent. We’ll be there again.
Beautiful food. The hake fillet was so full of flavour.
This restaurant is one of our favourites - I can’t fault it. We have been a number of times, the food is always excellent, the service very professional and attentive and the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere.
Both the food and the service were top notch and we all really enjoyed our visit - such friendly and helpful staff
Great lunch.sat on table for two in window which was lovely on such a bright sunny day.
The service was second to none with all staff being very knowledgable on the menu.
My only criticism was Yorkshire’s too salty for our taste and too much mustard in cauliflower cheese. Other than that food superb
This place is amazing! I look forward to many more meals there.
Food was excellent as per usual, although the main course could have been hotter. Service was outstanding, the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable.
This was our first time in the annex dining room, we found the overall lighting too bright.
We return over and over again introducing friends because we are always confident that the service and food will always be first class.
This is a really friendly yet totally professional restaurant. Well done team ‘Poet’
Everything a great Gastropub should aim to be! Warm, friendly, informal but professional. Superb standard of food from a great menu.
A welcoming feeling from every member of the team you come across makes for a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Outstanding service and amazing food! It was only our second time visiting The Poet and yet again it was absolutely amazing experience. The food was stunning from starter to main and dessert and the service is incredible - very attentive and yet not intrusive at all. Highly recommend for any occasion or just a lovely evening out.
Fabulous food!! Outstanding.
Very exciting food. Well matched flavours and beautifully presented.
One of best restaurants in the area - if not the best!
Once again, had a fantastic meal at the poet. Fabulous food, attentive and accomodating staff. Lovely table. We have already booked to go back on 22nd feb.
Lovely surroundings, attentive and friendly staff and fantastic food. We had the tasting menu which was very reasonably priced and of a high standard.
Would recommend highly.
Our waitress was outstanding. Attentive but not overdoing it. She knew all about the food and named all the cheeses 🧀 and there were lots of them ! Her name is Jess.
What an absolute pleasure it was to dine at The Poet, it ticks all the boxes if you are looking for a top class dining experience. Faultless, friendly service, outstanding food wonderfully presented, excellent wine list and a cosy relaxed atmosphere. Well done, we will be back.
