The Raj offers a superb menu with a range of Indian cuisine to suit all tastes and pockets, all cooked to order on the premises from fresh ingredients, by a team of specialist chefs.
Diners can choose from standard curries through to a selection of Chefs Specials and Balti dishes.
Raj is particularly proud of his range of Balti dishes. Balti dishes originate from South Eastern part of India. restaurant of the year 2017
talk of York
We booked a table for 10.30 on line, had this confirmed to us on line. When we arrived for our meal we were told the restaurant was closing!! showed them the online booking and all we got was sorry that should not have happened. We had a good night and this ruined it. Happy birthday to me! Poor online booking management and very poor response when we turned up. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Excellent food. One of the best Indian meals I have had for a long time. Excellent value
Absolutey beautiful food, so nice nearly went back the next night
Excellent service and friendly staff.
Excellent food with fast service.
Not the best Indian I've been to. Average therefore I dont think I would go out of my way to recommend.
Kelly Holmes pic is bring milked s is up everywhere and a little deceiving because staff told us she visited the restaurant when it was under its previous management- tandoori nights.
Great food and service, will be eating there again next Christmas when we visit York.
The service was good, the food was excellent the whole evening was very special i had chicken bhuna which was the best curry I've ever eaten at a restaurant.. many thanks The Raj we will definitely be going back when we are in York again.
Great Indian food. Good value for $$ spent. Really enjoyed eating there!! Refreshingly affordable.
Disappointed that we were told that the card machine was not working at the end of the meal. Walking out to the cash machine spoilt the evening a bit.
Booked this restaurant because it was fairly close to our hotel in York and seemed to have good reviews. We did not rate it very highly. It was a busy evening and whilst the service was very quick it appeared as though the waiters were under instruction to get customers in and out as quickly as possible. I had samosa to start which were inedible. They were floating in oil and very tough. I tried just to eat the filling which was ok(Ish) but not very much of it. My main course was ok. My husband didn’t really enjoy his butter chicken. We have had so many much better Indian meals than this.
We first visited the Raj some 4 years ago on a weekend break. The food and choice of menu was outstanding then and we promised ourselves we would visit the Raj again. We were not disappointed. If you love Indian food you will love the Raj
This place is a lovely little find food was amazing and staff so friendly and professional, definitely visit again, curry is amazing and very flavourful!
Really lovely food, speedy service and friendly staff
The table was booked for 12.30... we turned up to find the door locked. However, eventually a member of staff eventually appeared and informed us they had stopped serving lunch a month or so before. Two unhappy customers walked away.....
Very helpful and friendly service. Excellent choice of dishes, all well presented. My chicken and lamb Korai was excellent.
I have eaten at 3 Indian restaurants in York this year. Sadly the Raj is in third place.
Food is not great, undercooked Naan bread and bland chicken tikka masala, how do you achieve so little taste in an Indian?!
Prices acceptable for city centre.
Ambience non existent, generally felt the place was unloved and the staff were going through the motions. Friday night, but not particularly busy - once the meal was served we were ignored until I prompted them to bring the bill. As we left several staff were happily chatting with, I am assuming, a couple of mates at the bar in the front of the restaurant over a beer.
There are so many other excellent options in York, I would not go back again. There are plenty of locals as well as the tourist trade, you let the former down at your peril.
Staff were very odd, loitering and not particularly friendly. The music was more suited to a club than a restaurant. I had booked but the table didn’t appear to be made ready beforehand. The toilets were very far away. The decor was distracting- changing colour liquid panels and odd ceiling roses on the walls behind the lights.
The food was acceptable given the price, although the description on 4 different vegetarian dishes was exactly the same even though they are quite different in reality!
Tables crammed on top of each other
Pretty much the worst restaurant I’ve eaten in
The food was tasteless , service was good though. I won't be returning
Was ok to be fair but really nothing special all was edible but a little bland
Best Indian food I've ever tasted, great service, good choice of beers, good atmosphere, very relaxing.
sizzling platters very good.
it did seem a little short staffed last saturday, they were very busy but staff coped.
would have liked 'more medium spicy dishes on the menu.'
many mild dishes one chilli and a few very spicy, but more two chilli ones please
Great evening...food and service outstanding..would definitely return if ever in York again. Give it a try.
As ever the food was delicious with excellent service throughout the meal and a very fair priced menu.
Great Food, freshly cooked, friendly service.
If you like it spicy, that‘s the Place to go.
Well-intentioned people serving o.k.ish standard Indian food, but the service was chaotic - we had to wait 35 minutes for our 8.00 pm booking, they had run out of chardonnay, and we didn't get any wine until we had finished our starters, generally everything was a bit haphazard. They did however give us a free bottle of wine at the end.
Great food and accommodated our group of 10 really well.
Place is much bigger than it looks from the outside.
Superb will come here again if in York
Staff seemed frantic and stressed even though there were only 5 tables to see to. We were seated abruptly after a 20 minute wait where we were unable to even get a drink. The Naga curry was mild which is not right. The couple next to us angrily left without staff trying to resolve their problems.
We had a really good quality meal ,very tasty & great service. would recommend to and visitor to York
Lovely food, good atmosphere, friendly staff, will definitely be going back
Had the Lamb thali which was excellent, the madras was a little too hot for me but everything else was lovely. The 2 young men serving were great, nice manner.Surroundings a bit odd, lovely glass feature but the rest a bit tired, needs jazzing up.
I was dining alone and arrived early but the staff made me welcome. They were very helpful with choosing my meal, which was very enjoyable.
Another great night for the York Clarets. These guys at the Raj know how to look after pre-booked groups and parties. Food is great. Service top notch. Looking forward to next time.
A super restaurant with good service, tasty food and a lovely ambience.

3 of us had a meal on 9th march 2018.would highly recommend .brilliant tasty food. Exceptional service. We have been to this restaurant 4 times & it has never let us down.
Always a great night for pre booked groups at The Raj. Our regular curry nights for York Clarets (fans of Burnley Football Club based in and around York ) are always a big success at the Raj. The guys look after us and the service and food is always top of the league!
Lovely attentive staff and yummy great value food. Would recommend.
