    1 Jan - 30 Nov 2024
Served in The Garden Room Indulge your inner child & adventure into the mouth-watering world of chocolate with our enchanting afternoon tea inspired by York’s well-renowned history with chocolate. York once known as ‘the chocolate city’ dating back almost 300 years, at its peak, over 14,000 people were employed in the city’s famous chocolate factories - including Rowntree’s site at Haxby Road, which opened in 1890, and was so big it had its own fire brigade, & Terry’s Chocolate Works factory near York Racecourse, which opened in 1926. Inspired by history, Executive Chef Aaron Craig has created & developed a truly magical indulgence of mouth-watering flavours using some well-known classic inspiration from the nation’s favourite chocolates.

I had booked the Principal Hotel for afternoon tea for a special occasion. I had expected a nice experience due to the high standard of hotel. The service was very poor, the member of staff was not attentive, and forgot a number of things when ordering, such asking for a bottle of water twice and in the end we gave up and didn’t have any. I would have been more understanding if they were really busy but that did not seem the case, the waitress just didn’t seem to be bothered. The sandwiches as part of the afternoon tea were ok. The sweets were the best bit. It’s a real shame as it’s a beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting.

The food and hotel are lovely. We had a glass of Prosecco with our afternoon tea which should’ve been a set price but we were charged £16 extra for this and no one came to see if we needed more hot drinks during our time, which was a bit disappointing. I’d go again but wouldn’t risk getting any extras like Prosecco again.

The servi e was good but the information about our afternoon tea was confusing. Also the heating was far too hot. Trying to gsin staff attention for extra tea was difficult.

The food was nice and good value. The service was a little bit slow though. When we wanted to pay we couldn't find any staff. The we were also missing a macaroon and one of the cakes on the menu was replaced with something else but it was never explained what it was which was a bit disappointing. The vegetarian option for sandwiches was also just two egg and cress and two cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches.

No staff available on arrival & when we found someone they said the restaurant had closed & wasn’t serving. Had we booked afternoon tea in the Garden Room? No we had booked Sunday lunch. Tried the Garden room but no staff there despite waiting for a few minutes. Went into the bar to try there but they didn’t have a booking. Party if 7 booked to make sure we had somewhere nice to eat. No room at a table in the bar so left to find alternative before it got too busy in town for a party of our size. Very disappointing as had confirmed to say we were coming through the app. Seems like they haven’t updated Open Table as we were told they didn’t serve food in the Refectory anymore as it was used for conferences

This was booked for afternoon tea, as a surprise treat for myself. The staff seemed unaware that it was an afternoon tea booking, and didn’t explain any available options. Whilst the ambience and food were excellent, there were three in our party, two were served together however, the third person waited approximately 8-10 minutes before their sandwiches were brought out.

Our booking was for afternoon tea in the Garden Room. For £29 each it really wasn’t brilliant. The chairs are too low for the tables so it felt uncomfortable. Everything seemed quite shabby and stained. We had to wait ages to be served even though we had booked but I have to say once we were underway the service did improve. Definitely not worth 12.5% service charge though. The sandwiches were tasteless and the jam for the scones was a runny liquid. We had lemon with our Earl Grey tea and the lemon was served in thick chunks. We also discovered that it’s £4 an hour to use the car park. Doubt we’ll ever go back.

Ignored 2 messages I had sent re being vegetarian & diabetic, so I couldn't eat the majority of afternoon tea. Plates full of sweet things with no regard to being diabetic. I had a voucher for 2 for afternoon eat, but wanted lunch for the other 2 again this was ignored. Also service was very slow. Not a good experience. Had to go home for a snack afterwards to fill myself up. Waste of money.

I booked for 3 adults for 12.15 on Tuesday 13 February 2024. On arrival there was no meet and greet at the entrance to the Garden Room,we were ignored by the staff on duty. After several minutes of trying to catching a staff members eye I went to what I assume was a bar counter where people were waiting to order food,no table service. After waiting my turn I spoke to a young chap who was distinctly un interested, rude and abrupt.Although I had booked for 3 we were 4 and I asked if we could have an extra seat.I was pointed (but not shown)to a table that was set for 3 but had seating for 6.On seating I had to ask several times for an extra setting explaining that we wanted cutlery and a napkin.I ordered our food at the counter. The food service was disjointed and I had to asked for some items several times. One young young lady serving was pleasant but she seemed to be carrying the rest of the team who seemed work shy.Supervision was absent although several suits wafted through the area seemingly oblivious to the situation. When I went to pay I was proffered the card machine by the same male who seemed fixed to the counter and told to tap,as the bill was in excess of £100 I explained I would need to insert it and enter my code.Get your bank to increase your credit limit was the rather rude reply.I would choose to visit this hotel nor recommend it which is a pity as the food was fair to good. When the food and beverage offer is so crucial to ahotels commercial success it’s a pity they are getting it so wrong in service terms.

We booked an evening meal in the restaurant as a thank you treat for family, but it was a disappointing experience. On arrival we were kept waiting to be seated at the reception desk which was unattended & had to draw the attention of the servers who were not paying attention as they were engaged in a general chit-chat. When taken to a table, we felt the movable chairs were very low so cushions were requested to raise the height of the seat for dining. We ordered bread & olives to share whilst waiting for our starters, but had to ask for side plates since none were brought with the food. When our starters arrived we then had to ask for some cutlery (to replaced what had been used & taken away after our nibbles were finished) meaning our starters cooled down whilst we waited for fresh cutlery. We again had to request cutlery to eat our main course with, including steak knives for the couple who ordered steak so the meals had cooled down again before we could start eating! Surely in a hotel of this standing the staff should be trained to ensure that all crockery & the right cutlery is in place before a meal is taken to a dinner. Although the meal was tasty, we all agreed it was overpriced at £90pp. It also didn’t help that we also had to pay over £9.00 parking charges in the hotel's own car park. Surely with the prices charged in the restaurant, patrons should receive parking for free. As our overall experience was disappointingly average, despite being locals, nobody in my booking would choose to eat there again.
