    £29.00 per person

    1 Jan - 30 Nov 2024
Served in The Garden Room Indulge your inner child & adventure into the mouth-watering world of chocolate with our enchanting afternoon tea inspired by York’s well-renowned history with chocolate. York once known as ‘the chocolate city’ dating back almost 300 years, at its peak, over 14,000 people were employed in the city’s famous chocolate factories - including Rowntree’s site at Haxby Road, which opened in 1890, and was so big it had its own fire brigade, & Terry’s Chocolate Works factory near York Racecourse, which opened in 1926. Inspired by history, Executive Chef Aaron Craig has created & developed a truly magical indulgence of mouth-watering flavours using some well-known classic inspiration from the nation’s favourite chocolates.

Ignored 2 messages I had sent re being vegetarian & diabetic, so I couldn't eat the majority of afternoon tea. Plates full of sweet things with no regard to being diabetic. I had a voucher for 2 for afternoon eat, but wanted lunch for the other 2 again this was ignored. Also service was very slow. Not a good experience. Had to go home for a snack afterwards to fill myself up. Waste of money.

I booked for 3 adults for 12.15 on Tuesday 13 February 2024. On arrival there was no meet and greet at the entrance to the Garden Room,we were ignored by the staff on duty. After several minutes of trying to catching a staff members eye I went to what I assume was a bar counter where people were waiting to order food,no table service. After waiting my turn I spoke to a young chap who was distinctly un interested, rude and abrupt.Although I had booked for 3 we were 4 and I asked if we could have an extra seat.I was pointed (but not shown)to a table that was set for 3 but had seating for 6.On seating I had to ask several times for an extra setting explaining that we wanted cutlery and a napkin.I ordered our food at the counter. The food service was disjointed and I had to asked for some items several times. One young young lady serving was pleasant but she seemed to be carrying the rest of the team who seemed work shy.Supervision was absent although several suits wafted through the area seemingly oblivious to the situation. When I went to pay I was proffered the card machine by the same male who seemed fixed to the counter and told to tap,as the bill was in excess of £100 I explained I would need to insert it and enter my code.Get your bank to increase your credit limit was the rather rude reply.I would choose to visit this hotel nor recommend it which is a pity as the food was fair to good. When the food and beverage offer is so crucial to ahotels commercial success it’s a pity they are getting it so wrong in service terms.

We booked an evening meal in the restaurant as a thank you treat for family, but it was a disappointing experience. On arrival we were kept waiting to be seated at the reception desk which was unattended & had to draw the attention of the servers who were not paying attention as they were engaged in a general chit-chat. When taken to a table, we felt the movable chairs were very low so cushions were requested to raise the height of the seat for dining. We ordered bread & olives to share whilst waiting for our starters, but had to ask for side plates since none were brought with the food. When our starters arrived we then had to ask for some cutlery (to replaced what had been used & taken away after our nibbles were finished) meaning our starters cooled down whilst we waited for fresh cutlery. We again had to request cutlery to eat our main course with, including steak knives for the couple who ordered steak so the meals had cooled down again before we could start eating! Surely in a hotel of this standing the staff should be trained to ensure that all crockery & the right cutlery is in place before a meal is taken to a dinner. Although the meal was tasty, we all agreed it was overpriced at £90pp. It also didn’t help that we also had to pay over £9.00 parking charges in the hotel's own car park. Surely with the prices charged in the restaurant, patrons should receive parking for free. As our overall experience was disappointingly average, despite being locals, nobody in my booking would choose to eat there again.

Lovely setting. Very quiet when we went, waited a while to order. Starters excellent, duck main poor. Despite multiple empty tables, staff sat another group on an adjacent table, who proceeded to remove coats etc in a small space almost knocking our wine & water over. Having dined at the Star this experience wasnt of the standard expected at this price point.

Service was extremely slow. After an hour we were asked again what starters we had ordered. The restaurant was less than a quarter full so wouldn’t t expect to have to wait as long as we did. It took 3 hours for 2 courses to be served.

We booked the Christmas Afternoon Tea at The Principal having looked around at other festive menus and following a recommendation from a friend. When we arrived, there were only 2 staff serving the whole garden room & nearly every table was taken. It took us the best part of 30 minutes to be seated & have our drinks order taken. Following this, everything was unfortunately just too steady. We’d been sat for nearly an hour when the sandwiches came out, followed by a further wait for the cake stand. I cannot fault the atmosphere or friendliness of the staff, they were great but clearly very run off their feet. There was a large table next to us and unfortunately we just felt a little forgotten about. For £39pp, we were disappointed.

Great food. Better service. Price average for Hotel Dining. Ambience- quiet although only a few diners. Table, chairs and decor is fine for cafe but for a luxury hotel with those prices- poor. Square plastic tables with loose rickety chairs that all belong in a cafe serving ping food. Decor is brown and dismal. Fine for a morning breakfast but substandard for the class of hotel and prices charged.

The starter, which was described as "Queenie Scallops" turned out to be rather small chopped cubes of what may or may not have been scallop, served in a clam shell. Not worth anything near £16. The side order of "sourdough" looked and tasted like thick-sliced French bread and the "seaweed butter" had no particular taste: neither salty, nor any taste of the sea (the green herb pieces in it looked like parsley). Not worth £4? The fish & chips I had for the main course was OK, but seemed expensive at £19?

Staff were for the most lovely, but felt that there were not enough of them for the few diners that there were. However, some were poorly turned out and not a credit to any hotel. We had to ask for our wine to be brought out and had sat an hour before our food arrived. Diners who came in after us were served before us, some were served the same dishes we ordered. The Refectory was cool and quite unpleasant to sit in and a few other diners put on their jumpers/jackets. The menu was pretty limited; the food was OK, but not the quality I was expecting from this hotel restaurant.

Afternoon Tea is served in the Garden Room not the Refectory Kitchen (as described on the website and this survey). The setting is lovely and the food nice but a bit lacking in presentation perhaps. For example the jam and cream came without spoons and instead of cake forks we were given main course knives and forks. At these prices everything should be perfect - more staff training needed?

We arrived for an anniversary tea at 3pm only to be told that there was one serving left but two couples had shown up - us, who had booked on this system earlier after a late plan change, and another who had phoned in. We were effectively sacrificed so the other couple could be seated, and we got told that the glitch was because their Reception should have closed the OpenTable but didn’t, meaning they got a double booking for their last slot. Next the server said the manager would either offer us a smaller portion or gladly serve us later in the day. We were very disappointed by this because it was through no fault of our own and little compensation was offered at the time, to say nothing of the manager not even coming to apologise. We did return later - long after the tea service had clearly ended - and were given a nice table with complimentary Prosecco and an anniversary message. This was a nice touch and most appreciated - I just feel, for service befitting the hotel, the manager should be coming out and offering this in the actual moment earlier when we were effectively being told to leave because another couple beat us to it. The food was exquisite and cleverly-themed to York’s confectionery history. Only minor snag was they gave us both pescatarian savouries when I’d made a point earlier of it only being one of us. Ambience was quieter (because it was nearly 6pm) but this suited us fine.

Had a lovely afternoon tea with two friends earlier this week. The garden room is beautiful and the service was good (if a little slow at times). The presentation of the food was excellent and the food was good. A bit too much margarine on the bread spoilt being able to taste the sandwich fillings but it was a nice mix of fillings. The scones were quite dry and we actually received all plain scones where there should have been two different types. The desserts were lovely but extremely sweet. The hot drinks were luke warm despite asking for them to be extra hot. Having said that, we had a really lovely afternoon and you just make the best of an afternoon off and a glass of really good Presecco in your hand :o)

The ambience was excellent and it was useful that the room is straight across from the station. All the food we had was tasty and well cooked and the service was very good. Only criticisms were that it was a very warm day when we went and the dining room was very hot despite open windows. We do not like a service charge being added automatically to the bill-this should be at the customers discretion.

Quite literally the worst dining experience I’ve ever had in my life. It was a special occasion (our anniversary) but a Monday night. We booked for 8.30pm and the staff didn’t want us there. The place was almost empty (fair enough on a Monday) but none of the tables had been cleared so we were sat among other diners’ detritus. We were sat for a full 20 minutes before I had to get up and ask for our order to be taken as no one had bothered. No drinks order was taken. Again, I had to prompt the waitresses (of which there were 4 to 6 diners). Ordered there Tempranillo. She didn’t know what that was. In the end, I had to settle for what she could find. For the prices in that place, I’d expect staff who know what wine is on the menu. Ordered champagne, too. It came luke warm. Plates were removed as I was literally still eating from them and we weren’t asked for dessert order. Simply had the bill plopped down in front of us within seconds of plates being removed. Went to The Ivy the next day - cheaper but made this place look like a joke. The most cardinal sin a hotel can commit is to make guests feel unwelcome. I’ve been to a lot of restaurants and I’m not exaggerating when I say this was the poorest ever. Food was good though to be fair. Complained in writing and was offered a bit of money off our next stay. We won’t be back.

Very disappointed. Poor customer service and the food was greatly overpriced. Very basic food disguised as something more. Tiny portions too.

This was booked for my mums birthday and relatives had travelled to York from different parts of Yorkshire. After 45 minutes we hadn’t received any part of our afternoon tea, not even the tea! We raised concerns twice and were told that someone would ‘try to find’ the supervising colleague but she never came. We paid for the Prosecco that we had drank and left. We were so disappointed with the service.

The afternoon tea was nice, the service was terrible. Overall it was okay, but there are much better options in and around York for £30 - it didn’t wow or leave you thinking you’d rush back which is a shame.

Three friends had afternoon tea. The food was very good, the mini quiche was tasty. There was the traditional selection of finger sandwiches and a good selection of cakes. The downside was the service. The two staff were very attentive on our arrival and brought drinks straight away. Unfortunately, there was an extremely long wait between finishing our sandwiches and eventually having to ask for the cakes to be served. The two members of staff were in the room chatting to each other, whilst this is not a problem in itself but we felt they should be alert to the needs of the guests. There was only one other table having afternoon tea at the time. It was disappointing to be automatically charged 12.5% service charge for what we considered below standard service.
