We had a lovely evening to celebrate my father's birthday, great food and excellent service.
Maitre de made the experience exceptional. Food was ok. For some reason the menu description didn't match the actual plate of food. Rump of lamb was chewy. Reconsider butcher!
It was a lovely place tucked away off a small lane. Unfortunately for us, it was a Wednesday and the four of us were the only diners that evening so the ambience was disappointing. However the food was wonderful and of course the attention from then staff was impeccable. We'll definitely go back, but hopefully on a busy night.
Enjoyable Sunday lunch, great food. Very quiet, only 3 tables with guests when we were there but only about 11 tables in total anyway. Sunday has a set menu which I felt was very reasonably priced. 3 courses was about £28 a head but the food was excellant have put pictures up and it is fine dining. Really enjoyed
Food excellent, likewise the service, A hidden jem in Epsom
Formal enough to be special, comfortable enough to not be intimidating. Food was beautifully cooked. Service was attentive and friendly.
Excellent cuisine and friendly service. A hidden gem.
I chose this restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary but both my wife and I were left disappointed. The service was good although the waitress had a habit of referring to my wife as young lady which as she is about to celebrate her 60th was a bit annoying after the first time. The menu was adventurous and the starter was good but we both felt the main courses did not live up to expectation. Some of the ingredients looked interesting but for us did not work together. The portions were good but neither my wife nor I finished the plates due to a mix of quantity and quality. The wine at £36/bottle was also nothing special. It was our first visit and would have been a good option for larger family events in the future but I'm sorry to say we won't be going back.
This was a new find for us. Tucked away in Epsom the restaurant is in the hotel. The ambiance is warm , welcoming and quiet! The food is very tasty, selection is basically English. The service is discreet but attentive. The only drawback was that it was very quiet, more people would have added to the ambiance (althought it did suit us very well that evening). Perhaps it is a well kept secret?
I work in the hotel and restaurant business and I love this restaurant! It is my second time going and they never disappoint. The food is of first class quality and my venison was cooked perfectly. The service is friendly, kind and laid back. We were very well looked after from beginning to end. I'm sure this place isn't for everyone, the restaurant only has 7 or 8 tables and the decor of the lobby reminds me of my grandmothers house but that just adds to the charm and "homeliness" of Chalk Lane. No doubt the best place in Surrey for a quiet romantic dinner!
An 18th Birthday Sunday Lunch started well with the Hotel having a prepared area in which we could relax, have a drink, choose our menu options and general chatter. Sunday lunch had the eight of us in our own dining area. Even though this was out of the way the staff were attentive. All of the traditional choices were very tasty with the chef catering for a couple of our requests. Worth having in your list if you live in and around the area.
Great restaurant for many reasons. Food is excellent with a very unusual menu; service very efficient and lovely to be able to talk as it is a quiet ambience
The food and service were very good. It was very quiet then we had a quick service
Affordable good wine
We went on a Saturday night. I'd included a message in my booking to say that it was my Mother's birthday and asking for staff to be aware of that.
The restaurant was quiet - only four tables at its peak.
The room is a bit of a corridor, but pleasant enough. Most importantly: you don't have to shout to carry on a conversation.
The food is good quality and well-presented.
Service was friendly, though not speedy, and the message about the birthday clearly had not made it through (but my Mother was very happy with the evening).
It's rather over-priced for what it is: £8.50 for soup with mussels, £24 for a venison main, £20 for lamb.
I took my mother for a special birthday meal and the waiter was very accommodating. I had requested online for a message on the desert plate to wish mum happy birthday and this was all organised with any further requests when we arrived.
The restaurant and hotel were lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. The interiors were elegant and inviting and we will definitely be back again.
The only thing would be is that I cannot remember there being any vegetarian options should anyone fancy.
Such a shame that this little restaurant within the hotel couldn't deliver a better result. My wife and I decided to give it a go on the spur of the moment (we're pretty local) and to be honest the food was ever so disappointing (additionally annoying is that it comes at quite a high price tag).
I'm not sure if they use boil in the bag food (the way the food came out quickly and seemingly not freshly cooked implies they might) but it was below par and not even up to Marks & Spencer ready-meal standard - and to be honest we wished we'd taken that option and saved the £100 we spent here.
I feel bad slating a restaurant but this really was poor.
The Restaurant at Chalk Lane Hotel is a beautiful place for dinner. It was very quiet when we went, and at one point we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. The food was good and the service was friendly and attentive, perhaps one too many "is everything alright?"s, but very helpful. It was nice to see more unusual choices such as game on the menu. The best part was the lovely setting, all light, white and airy with nice touches of decor.
We visited on a Sunday evening and there was only one other table so service was timely.
For starters we had the pan seared tuna which was excellent. For main I had the ribeye which was served exactly medium-rare as requested but there was too much grizzle for my liking and left a third of the meat. My wife had the roast beef dish which was a mistake because there had been a Sunday lunch service earlier that day and the vegetables were clearly left over from then and mostly inedible, even the yorkshire pudding was dry. Lesson learnt there.
Desert was a creme caramel for my wife who enjoyed it, my sorbet selection was just a sugar hit without clearly defined flavours. We had a bottle of 2006 Finca Nueva Rioja which was excellent.
Very quiet the day we went, but made for an intimate atmposphere with good level of music and attentive service which wasn't overbearing. Excellent food and wine, left very happy. Not sure about value as I didn't pay but I didn't hear any gasps!
Went for a valentines dinner with my fiancé, food, wine
Had a lovely time on a quiet Sunday afternoon in the Restaurant at Chalk Lane Hotel. The venue is traditional, with a modern feel to the restaurant. The food was great, the portions excellent and the staff very attentive (probably as there was only 3 tables in for lunch), although it was quiet, it was still a nice atmosphere. My angus rib beef was cooked just right, and the wife said her chicken was excellent also. We are new to Epsom dining, but would return if in the town again.
RESTAURANT AT CHALK LANE EPSOM
We enjoyed very much this venue with a very high quality service and a good quality menu based on French recipes. The bouillabaisse would have however benefited to be served with rouille instead of mayonnaise. Except this, everything was outstanding and we will come back.
The Restaurant in Chalk Lane is out of the town centre but an easy walk. It is in a pretty, quiet location and the restaurant itself is nicely decorated and comfortably set out. Food was very good. The highlight was probably the cheese souffle starter but the apple crumble was also excellent, a contemporary take on a traditional pud that worked really well. Vegetable side dishes, charged separately, were worth the price.
Food was vey good with generous portions. Friendly service although felt a bit rushed. Good for a quiet dinner for two - nota place for a lively evening.
Chalk Lane Hotel, Epsom
Excellent food and service in an interesting out of the way location.
Chalk Lane Hotel in Epsom.
Good quality restaurant serving decent food. Service good but not intrusive. Have dined here several times over the years, at lunch and for dinner with friends, never been let down even with the slightly overpriced menu. Ambience is quiet as we had meal at 7pm, so only few diners. Will go back as you can rely on the good food and service and it is local for us.
Last minute decision to go out for dinner - restaurant very quiet but not surprising for a Sunday pm. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Will be going back but note the menu only changes every 6 months. Would recommend!!
The Restaurant @ Chalk Lane Hotel - what a little gem! Set in a beautiful country house hotel, the restaurant is small and intimate. Every one of the staff were so friendly and helpful. We were given great service and the food was wonderful. The smoked salmon starter was the most delicious I've ever had, and the chocolate dessert special was to die for! I would not hesitate to go again.
Chalk Lane in Epsom is a top quality restaurant, with prices to match. Unfortunately only 3 tables occupied on a Friday evening which resulted in a lack of atmosphere. Service was excellent - very attentive. Starter of Fruits de Mer was below par, especially at £11.50. Mains of venison and lamb were excellent. Wine was good value. A good one-off experience, but, overall it was overpriced.
We went the the Restaurant@Chalk Lane in Epsom at the weekend with some friends and had a lovely evening. The restaurant with adjoining bar area was very cosy and intimate and the staff were very attentive. The food was good as well and we will definitely make a return trip there. Bev of Kingswood
The service was excellent and the food was very good. The appetisers were a nice touch as well. The setting of the restaurant is smart and relaxing. We booked a table at 7pm and were the only customers until about 7:45-8pm, so there wasn't much atmosphere this was the only negative point though. We would go again and do recommend it.
very pleased to find an upmarket restaurant in Epsom, nice ambience, good quality and attractive table settings, good service, food good, particulalrly starters, though too much meat in proportion to veg in main course for my taste.
Pretty restaurant very tastefully appointed ,tucked away in Epsom .French style short enticing menu very well executed .Great find
It's a shame this restuarant is so quiet because it has a lovely feel and would be even nicer if there was a little more of a buzz going on - but that is not the restaurant's fault. Food was excellent, lovely presentation and taste, lovely choice of dishes too. Service very good, and a nice wine list. Would definitely return!
We booked the Chalk Lane about 1 month before Valentines Day and despite re-assurances that the a la carte menu would be available alongside a set menu, this wasn't the case. The setting and ambience of the restaurant did lend itself towards the occasion and although the food was pricey, it wasn't overpriced. The appetisers were a nice touch and in hindsight would forego the starter and have main and dessert.
We chose Chalk Lane as it was close by and had a great diner rating and we were not disappointed. The food was lovely - much less conventional than we were expecting - although the menu was perhaps a little limited. The complimentary appetisers were a nice touch. At first glance the menu seems pricey, but the portions were generous and there was no need to order additional side dishes, so we left well fed and with a bill which was surprisingly in budget.
The Restaurant at Chalk Lane: Our main topic of discussion was "Why don't the fine diners of Epsom support and experience this wonderful restaurant?" Ambience is marked 7 because only our table of 6 and another table of 2 were occupied. This is a great injustice to a superb restaurant.
All our starters were delicious and the main courses were top class especially the ox cheek and lamb in a vacuum . Wine prices were reasonable and service excellent and unobtrusive.
We were there for my daughter's 18th Birthday (they had been warned in advance) and we could not have had a better evening. Everything was done to make our dinner perfect for us.
The usual high standard
Food was very good.
