The Rose & Crown
Sunday: 12:00 - 21:00
It was a father-day meal for my husband and his dad. We have been to the pub before and remember the amazing food so booked the table a week before.
I received a voicemail directly from the pub asking me to contact them back about the booking, I did so the next day and was told I needed to pay £10 per person to secure this booking, I remember thinking this is crazy but as it was Wednesday there was no way we would have been able to bring ok another decent pub. So we paid it.
On arriving and after being seated we asked for the menus as there was only a set menu provided of £32 per head. The waitress just said we only do the set menu today. I was really upset as this was never explained to me on the phone when paying the deposit.
We had an awful waitress who proceeded to forget everything we ordered, we had to asked her twice if not 3 times for things we ordered.
After spending £177 for this experience we are very disappointed in the experience and professionalism the staff lack.
I must say the food was lovely as always!
We will not be returning this this pub again.
To begin with, I ordered 2 meals, my meal came after 45 mins and when it came I was told that I couldn't have a certain item with it as had run out, with this item missing i couldn't eat it without. After another 15 mins was still waiting for the other meal until manager came out, he was a lovely guy. Explained the situation and the manager went out of his way to get me something which wasn't on the menu which was fantastic. I would have been liked to have been told that if anything wasn't available straight away so i could have had something else. waited half an hour just for the drinks.
Was not happy with our table as one leg was longer than the other and it kept rocking. The potatoes were not very nice on this occasion. Was very noisy due to the fact of children running around the restaurant area. Last time I used this restaurant it was much nicer. Please fix the tables. Service was good though.
Busy Sunday and the green was packed, food was excellent and the service just right.
Whilst the food was good the service was very poor. 15 minutes after being seated, no one had taken our drinks order. I had to go to the bar and ask someone to come and serve us. No one asked us if we wanted more drinks during the meal and we had to chase the waitress again. The waitress couldn’t tell us what the beer options were. She had to check with someone else who was passing by our table. I ordered my beef rare but when the food arrived the waitress could not tell us which beef was rare. One of the party ordered cottage pie but was served chicken pie.
Very disappointing Sunday evening meal. One meal failed to arrive with the rest. Most of the nest was tasteless and the roast potatoes were more like boiled. Yorkshire puddings overcooked.
Good quality pub food. Really recommend the pulled pork belly from the specials menu!
Lovely meal and friendly and attentive staff made our evening really relaxed. Nice to be asked if we wanted our son's meal with our starters which made a real difference to be able to all start eating at the same time. Will definitely be back to eat here again!
Nice looking venue and good location, child friendly, but just so slow food service.
We have only been there 3 times, one evening and two Sunday lunch times.
Every time it is a two hour plus wait just for first course.
The serving staff try hard but it seems that it is the kitchen that just cant cope.
The food is ok - certainly nothing special, and not a lot of it.
It is busy because it is one of the very few child friendly pubs in the area, but dont go there if you are hungry or in a rush!
Eat somewhere else first then go and relax with a beer in the nice garden area.
Was not impressed.
We booked a table, but waited 2 hours to be served food.
This was with regular enquiries about its progress. If I hadn’t asked I think we may have waited even longer.
Lovely Sunday lunch. The waiting staff were polite and available for requests.
Food was lovely, good service throughout.
Very disappointed as came the other week with another friend and it was a good experience! However, this time the service was poor and the food very disappointing in fact we had to complain about one of the belly of porks as it was very fatty. After two conversations with staff they removed the cost of the meal!
Not sure I will be returning here again in the near future!
The food was great and we were pleasantly surprised when it finally arrived. Sadly service was very slow, painfully so at times. They were nice enough but more training is needed.
The waitresses serving us were very helpful and friendly and the food and ambience were both excellent as always. Thanks for another great dining experience. We'll definitely be back!
Nice food and good service, and very accommodating for our group with young children.
Such a shame, really gone down hill, used to love it here. Not rushing to go back at all
we went to the Rose and Crown for Mother Day, the menu was nice and food good, but service was slow, but this can be expected on days like this.
As ever a good meal at the Rose and Crown. The staff there are extremely friendly, polite etc and they put on a great Mother's Day menu
Only criticism would be them putting a table for four so close to the kitchen door that the door hit a chair every time it was opened (which was frequent). Didn't affect us as we were the next table but saw 2 families ask to be moved because of it
We booked three days in advance for a table
of five advising through this app (Open Table) that my Mum was the special guest - Mother’s Day was the following day. When we arrived it took two staff (a member of bar staff and someone standing in kitchen whites) approx 5 mins to confirm we’d booked. When they finally did locate our booking although there were several empty tables large enough for five in the restaurant the waiting staff tried to seat us at a table for four expecting two adults to squeeze in on one side. The waiting staff serving us was clearly under pressure and afforded us little or no apology for not being prepared and when we asked that we would like a table for five he told us we’d ‘have to wait’ and stormed off in a huff. Whilst we waited we saw several staff rushing around frowning and looking stressed. Perhaps they’d been busy just before we’d arrived and hadn’t time to prep for new custom - and whilst we understand that sometimes this happens in the catering industry - I’m sorry but the reason we booked in advance was so that YOU can prepare. The waiter did say we could grab a drink at the bar, but really should have taken our drinks order whilst he set the new table up. The new table was closer to the bar which was noisy and not appropriate - again there were several other tables that were free and again - sorry if either Open Table or YOU overbooked but that’s YOUR problem not ours. We also saw one member of staff come out from the kitchen after kicking the door open and mimic a scream of frustration. At this point we felt unwelcome, extremely dissatisfied with YOUR service and worried about what the rest of the experience would be like. After around 15 mins we were seated and unfortunately found that the menu was then a choice of what did we think would be less hassle for YOUR STAFF and for us to eat and get out as quickly as possible rather than what would we actually like to eat - we left. Serious Management issues. Will never visit again
Really nice roast and the staff were pleasant, :)
Really busy, got a table in the bar area, nice food and a lovely pint of Doombar.
Very nice Sunday roast
Only complaint was a steak charged for 8oz
Was 6 at push no-one seemed to know what to do when questioned
We had a table for 10 to celebrate a birthday and I have to say all in all we had a lovely time. Tge food was lovely and service was excellent! Only down side is our table was beside the coffee & cutlery station - which meant every 5 mins or so, it got very noisy with banging and clattering! But aside from that we would def return.
Really enjoyable Sunday family lunch.
Only downside is that two wine glasses on the spin were not clean.
Will go back for sure as great family ambience but please --- clean glasses.
Staff were excellent and very friendly which is another reason I'll be back
We had a great time. Service was excellent, our waitress was attentive without being overbearing and the pub had a lovely atmosphere.
The Sunday Roasts were all really good, as were the desserts. We have already booked in for next Sunday.
It was a quiet Saturday evening when we visited, with the restaurant only half full, nevertheless we all enjoyed our meal. There's a good selection of wines and beers available (including some decent ales). The food menu, while not vast, offers a good selection and I can thoroughly recommend the salmon and crab scotch egg as a starter. Service was good, though the box-ticking routine of asking whether everything was OK with our meal was carried out three times which was a bit excessive.
There was no rush to free up the table and we were left to enjoy more drinks on the same table once we'd finished our meal. I guess if the place had been busier then it may have been a different story. All in all an enjoyable evening.
the Food and Service was very good we have been there 2 times and would go again
The rose and crown was recommended to me and my wife by a friend as we wanted to go somewhere we hadn't been before. (We later found out they hadn't been there for a while and when they had there was a larger menu)
On arrival our first impression was very good as it is a great looking building with plenty of parking and easily accessible,
The staff were friendly but you definitely want certain ones dealing with you as it was obvious that 1 or 2 didn't have the best people skills (they were polite).
We was seated at a table and given the menu, well given an A4 piece of paper that constitutes a menu. We read through and that didn't take long as the options are limited and the price was a bit on the high side to want to try dishes outside of your comfort zone.
The wife just wanted to go as nothing on the menu was anything she wanted but as I said before we wanted to go somewhere new and try something different so we just chose a couple of dishes you can't go wrong with, the sirloin steak and steak burger,
It was cooked to perfection and tasted fantastic, any negative thoughts I started with soon left as the evening was going great and the drinks tasted good to.
It was a great meal and worth paying that bit extra for perfectly cooked meals, it's a shame the selection was not great but there should be enough for most people to enjoy something from the menu,
It's an experience I'm glad I had and I will check again to see if they change the menu at any point as I would definitely go back again but probably not until the selection is better suited for my wife
This was our second visit.
The front of house and waiting staff are always attentive and helpful, but unfortunately, because it was busy - Saturday late lunchtime - it was very slow service.
The food was great, although very basic - the kids had a burger and chips - and that was exactly all they got. No salad, no veg etc...
Same with my steak - cooked as requested - but literally just a steak, flat mushroom and chips. One sauce. No vegetables or accompaniments which was unusual and quite disappointing.
The food was tasty but I don't think great value.
The staff did keep reassuring us that the food was coming, but ti did take two hours for a two course meal for four.
At least the food was fresh and not overcooked or dried out because of the time delay.
A nice place, great staff, and child friendly, but maybe best to avoid at meal times if you are in any sort of rush.
Service & staff was very good. Food was very nice & ambiance was very good. Lovely time there & will definitely be going back.
Lovely lunch with the family, children and great grandmother everybody was catered for and we were all well looked after by the lovely Lucy, the food was excellent as was the service u,d highly recommend for families
Really nice Sunday lunch with some friends, the staff were friendly.
Had a nice lunch thank you to our lovely American waitress
The Rose and Crown is a lovely looking pub inside with plenty of space and very nicely decorated. However we were disappointed when we visited last week to celebrate my wife's birthday. The waiter who served us was rather surly which wasn't what we expected. My meal was very tasty but rather expensive (almost £16) for a very small bowl of food. My wife had curry which was of good quality but had very little flavour or taste. Admittedly it was midweek (evening) but the pub was almost completely deserted so there was little ambience.
In future we will try the pub next door!
lovely food with friendly staff. nice wine and spacious seating
Screaming kids, fire alarms going off throughout the meal, poor service upon arrival despite booking, vastly over priced food for the mediocre quality.
Would not recommend.
Catching up with Kent based friends for Sunday lunch had been planned since pre-Christmas and we were hoping it would be a stress-free affair, despite the fact that our group of friends now includes multiple babies and kids. There was a slight hiccup with the booking (I must've made a mistake with how many adults I was booking for, how many high chairs we needed and how much space for buggies!) they sorted it out and we got a really great table. The staff may not agree as there were some kids dancing/playing near the kitchen door but they took it all in their stride.
The place filled up and it's not hard to see why. I'd planned to have a roast but got distracted by the fish special on the menu - salmon with crayfish tails and a scallop - it was delicious. Those who did have roasts or other hearty pub fare - for example sausage & mash, gammon, egg & chips or chicken pie all seemed satisfied. Drinks were standard and those who had dessert appeared to enjoy. Service was a bit hit and miss with drinks being forgotten but the staff always had smiles on their faces, were willing to help and didn't get stressed with how busy the pub became.
Overall, it was worth the walk in the snow from Chelsfield station!
table to small - not good table service - food order wrong, amended correctly them luke warm
Excellent Sunday Lunch. Particularly liked the mixed lunch with three different meats, very tasty. Very crowded but service still very attentive. Lovely meal.
The occasion was my sons birthday and this is our 2nd visit. It was a Monday and so not many people within . Nevertheless the service was good and staff very pleasant. The food was great and excellent value. I would recommend a visit to the Rose and Crown for any occasion.
