Not very impressed with the menu as it was very limited for an a la carte menu we were expecting a bit more than pub grub for the price
Had gentleman's afternoon tea, filling and tasty, but unfotunately didn't have a menu on the table and part of it was substituted and we weren't made aware until after when we found out what was missing. Waiter just shrugged it off. Pleasant venue, tasty food, nice presentation, staff could have been more attentive. Have been previously for tea at the weekend, am likely to visit again but not mid-week.
We had a dreadful Saturday night meal.the vegetarian food was very bad and exceptionally overpriced. I won't recommend it to anyone. It used just to be very good but has dreadfully gone downhill.
Very delicious food, setting is beautiful. Very well priced and a set menu also available with even better value
Lovely food and fantastic view of the pier at night
Cocktails were delicious and made in a timely manner. Staff friendly and attentive. Upstairs dining was quaint and well organised. Space between the courses was perfect. Food served hot and very fresh. It was lovely!
A very nice dinning room. Sadly the initial buzz of the place seems to have died and there were few tables occupied. The wine list is good and realistic. The food was in the main excellent. Steak slightly under. Lamb slightly over. Nicely presented. Overall very good. The waiters were excellent. Less so the waitress. She was more transport cafe than fine dining. Shame really.
The food was good, apart for the fish and chips meal, fish batter soft and bit crispy.
The two gentleman waiters were great and really good at there nob roles.
Overall we will return in the future.
Service was excellent food was incredible the staff very friendly and helpful very comfortable atmosphere
Lovely food and friendly service, will visit again.
Have eaten here on a number of Sundays and a mid week group evening meal. Like the style and tradition of the building and the layout inside. Food has always been good along with the service and the ambience of the ground floor bar. Would recommend a visit.
The Royal Hotel never disappoints. Beautiful interiors with a cocktail menu that is both delicious and fun! The atmosphere is mellow and friendly and the menu always fresh and exciting. I always find it difficult to choose between the gastronomic treats available, last visit I opted for the delicious vegan offerings whilst my husband enjoyed a streak-there is always something for everyone. The Royal is my favourite haunt in Southend.
Afternoon tea at the Royal Hotel was so lovely, staff were attentive, the food was delicious and the cocktails are so yummy!
My only small criticism was that our table did not get cleared and eventually I had to ask for the plates to be taken away but this was on a shift change so I don’t think this is usual. The staff were otherwise really great and very friendly and we had an amazing time. I would highly recommend it.
Very expensive for what it was. Half of my dinner didn't turn up and an extra £18 'bar charge' was added to he billwhich wasn't ours. Utterly disappointed.
Disappointing. Lovely looking restaurant but food was only ‘ok’.
Was expecting a more exciting and extensive menu. The scallops were tasteless and over powered by the crispy smokey bacon. The pheasant main course was unbalanced. Too much meat compared to the accompanying sauces and sides. The fillet steak to be honest was melt in the mouth and this was the best dish. The apple tart tatin has a 20 minute wait and pastry was thick and there’s not enough apple. Although the date ice cream was good. Probably wouldn’t return.
Highly recommended. Loved the cocktail bar, with beautiful dinning room and wonderful food. Staff were very attentive and helpful. That good....went back for amazing breakfast next morning. I will head straight here on my next visit to Southend!
Amazing evening at The Royal! Went to celebrate and it didn’t disappoint. Beautiful cocktails and incredible food. Service was outstanding!
Can’t wait to go back!
Excellent family Sunday lunch. Beautiful venue - spacious room with high ceilings, large windows allowing the sun to flood in, and views of Southend pier and seafront. Delicious roast meats with plenty of vegetables. Attentive and polite staff, nothing is too much trouble. Would highly recommend.
Loved it all. The wine, the food and the surroundings.
Delicious, interesting menu. Dishes looked and tasted fabulous! Great service - just attentive enough without being over the top. Excellent cocktails. Only disappointment - no draught beer!
Service for drinks slow, table outside kitchen so waiters walking past constantly, no ambience, lighting too harsh, loud cackling women, pasta bland, sadly no dress code. Cheese board good value.
A beautiful old building lovingly restored with interesting features. We had table overlooking pier on the raised section, which was rather pleasant. As the evening filled up it became quite noisy on the lower level with large groups of women particularly loud. The food was delicious, even though the SOUP was barely Luke warm, the service was just right, not too hurried and we had a very nice evening.
Cold starters not good as waited ages ( not busy either ) seemed more interested in afternoon teas than serving lunch ! service very poor no interaction had to pour own wine .
Mains were fine didn’t bother with desserts as poor choice .
We went to the Royal Hotel on a Friday evening. It was very busy in the bar downstairs but we ate in the ballroom upstairs which was very elegant and much quieter .
We all opted for the set menu (3 courses for under £20) and each of us said how good the menu was.
The food was excellent and service polite, prompt and attentive (they even got a vase for a bunch of flowers for us).
We will definitely be going to this restaurant again
We have been to the Royal Hotel a few times now and have always had an excellent meal in lovely surroundings. My only criticism this time and it may only be a one off, was that I didn't enjoy the beef and onion pie. It's difficult to describe but the inside of the pie, although very tasty, was all molded together with no loose gravy and I therefore found it quite dry. Everything else was delicious, especially the potatoes and vegetables. I would certainly recommend this restaurant.
Booked table for 8.15, arrived on time to be told table not ready and go to the bar, this would have been fine but the man who just waved us away was so rude and didn’t greet us, he told the lady to tell us to go to the bar. Table was wobbly and we asked to move (no idea how they even considered this acceptable when they set it). After taking our orders, waitress arrived back to inform two of us that our order wasn’t available, reordered another. Asked for bread for the table while we waited for starters, never arrived. Waited an hour between starters and our main meal, now 10.15pm. Had to ask for drinks and empty glasses not taken away. Ordered vegetables for main meal, didn’t arrive either. Only good dish was the deserts.
Was told by the manager there were problems due to be busy.
Will not return at the weekend when it is too busy. Have eaten twice before on a weekday and it was good. Overall, shocking service, felt totally ignored all night. Food average.
Dinner with family - 3 of whom seen each for 40 years! Great place to catch up as service excellent and not intrusive. Great choice of food, wonderfully presented and cooked to perfection. Fantastic value. Been before and going again! Thank you
The food was delicious and the service was amazing , the lunch set menu with wine was fantastic value for money.
I always come here it is my favourite restaurant. Unfortunately on this Saturday night our 6pm table booking was the worse occasion I have eaten here.
The staff were under pressure because the lunch time crowd were still there and the tables had to be re laid for evening service, this means that all the staff are far too busy to give early diners a proper bit of joined up service as you get at other times. I had to go looking for staff and ask several times for simple things like black pepper and more drinks, this was awful customer service. The staff were pleasant as always but far too pre occupied with setting the place up that they forget about giving early diners a cohesive service.
Food was good, the Cod dish was very small and should have been served with some side vegetables to pack out the amount of food on the plate, I was hungry after eating it and it was an expensive plate of food to be hungry after eating.
The service was very slow, we skipped desert. MUST DO BETTER.
Really great lunch, food was delicious and our server Lauren was excellent. Would definitely go back and recommend to friends.
Staff good. Food was only just warm.small menue. For a top price venue very lacking. Wants some good management
The food was great. Really tasty. But the experience was let down by service which was fair at best. We waited 10 minutes at reception waiting to be seated. Staff walked past us several times before we were seen to. There were not enough staff waiting on diners in the ballroom for the amount of people there. It took over 2 hours to get through 2 courses. Had the service been more prompt, we probably would have had dessert and more drinks.
Love the location and the building. Imaginative food presented beautifully.
A gem in Southend with excellent food in a lovely location.
This was booked online the day before our visit and was very easy to do. My friend and I ordered a roast dinner - one chicken and one roast beef meal. The food arrived freshly cooked with a good selection of vegetables and each dish had a large Yorkshire pudding. I had a lovely desert - apple and apricot crumble with custard which was delicious. Portion sizes were large - I couldn't eat all my desert. It was very good value for money. I have eaten here a few times now and have never been disappointed.
A great evening kicking off with delicious if rather strong cocktails then heading up to the dinning room for a fantastic dinner.. 5 very satisfied diners.
Fabulous food very friendly staff one of my favourite places in Southend!!
We had an excellent view, sitting on the balcony area overlooking the Pier! The food was amazing, I can definitely recommend the soft shell crab, smoked haddock and sticky lamb. The atmosphere was great and the staff were friendly, although it was a bit hard to flag one down in between courses for another drink. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Lunched here several times - always an interesting and tasty menu plus great views and friendly service. Ballroom on 1st floor proved ideal for the evening - beautiful setting, original menu beautifully presented with professional service. And set menu is a bargain.
Amazing atmosphere and food. Friendly staff. Prices are high but it is worth it.
