The Royal Hotel Ratings and Reviews
Excellent family Sunday lunch. Beautiful venue - spacious room with high ceilings, large windows allowing the sun to flood in, and views of Southend pier and seafront. Delicious roast meats with plenty of vegetables. Attentive and polite staff, nothing is too much trouble. Would highly recommend.
A beautiful old building lovingly restored with interesting features. We had table overlooking pier on the raised section, which was rather pleasant. As the evening filled up it became quite noisy on the lower level with large groups of women particularly loud. The food was delicious, even though the SOUP was barely Luke warm, the service was just right, not too hurried and we had a very nice evening.
We went to the Royal Hotel on a Friday evening. It was very busy in the bar downstairs but we ate in the ballroom upstairs which was very elegant and much quieter .
We all opted for the set menu (3 courses for under £20) and each of us said how good the menu was.
The food was excellent and service polite, prompt and attentive (they even got a vase for a bunch of flowers for us).
We will definitely be going to this restaurant again
We had an excellent view, sitting on the balcony area overlooking the Pier! The food was amazing, I can definitely recommend the soft shell crab, smoked haddock and sticky lamb. The atmosphere was great and the staff were friendly, although it was a bit hard to flag one down in between courses for another drink. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Lunched here several times - always an interesting and tasty menu plus great views and friendly service. Ballroom on 1st floor proved ideal for the evening - beautiful setting, original menu beautifully presented with professional service. And set menu is a bargain.
Friendly welcome. Wide open dining space, very elaborate decor. I know it's the old ballroom but did have the feel everyone watched as you walked to your table. Good attentive waiting staff. Shame the menu had a mistake on it. Diners were all considerably older than us (we are mid-40s). Enjoyed the cocktails down in the bar. Lovely lively atmosphere.
Really enjoyed the whole experience, the food was extremely good, the burnt cream was to die for.
Our waiter was FANTASTIC, made the lunch with his wit and chat but very professional service, we loved it all.
Finished with cocktails outside on the veranda - that you could actually taste - well mixed.
Can recommend and can't wait to go back -the lunch menu is excellent value.
My husband and I brought two elderly relatives (85 & 90 years of age) for afternoon tea. The food and service and ambience were first class. The upstairs dining area was beautifully decorated very much in keeping to how it must have been in a bygone era. We shall certainly return.
Took my friend for afternoon tea for her 60th birthday. Had requested a table by the window as it was a special occasion and we had the best table in the house by the window overlooking the pier! The waiter we had was attentive and informative as well as being very witty and amusing. He was also most knowledgeable when asked about the Royal Hotel and its history. The afternoon tea itself was lovely with a delicious array of homemade cakes, scones and sandwiches. More clotted cream for the scones was brought on asking as was clean plates and more tea than you could possibly drink. I also had a glass of processo! In addition, to start there was a few savoury bites, which were a lovely addition to all the sweet stuff that followed. I have had afternoon tea in lots of different places and this was by far the nicest. Would highly recommend.
The Royal Hotel has been refurbished to a high standard and everything speaks class as soon as you walk through the door. The team are open and friendly and want to make your whole experience a pleasant one. Afternoon tea was delicious with a variety of different sweet and savoury treats. The scones were large, but a little dry for my liking, and came with lashings of cream and jam. Plenty of tea to drink and free refills. For the children it would be nice if the Palace provided juice in a teapot, as the Fairmont Hotel in Ottowa does, rather than charging extra for a soft drink. We were offered boxes to take anyway any treats we had not eaten. All in all a top notch tea experience and we will be back to try the Gentleman's tea which is a more savoury experience.
This was our first visit and I have to say I was impressed, service was high standard very friendly and helpful, food is outstanding I'm not normally a seafood eater and I tried the scallops for my starter and I loved it. Fillet steak was cooked perfectly and when I mentioned I had a food allergy they took this into consideration. We then went downstairs to the bar to have a few drinks and it has a very cosy yet lively feeling but not overwhelming. I will certainly be recommending to friends and looking forward to going back.
Four of us for Saturday lunch. 3 courses, wine and drinks flowed.
The food was superb, flawless.
Dishes ranged from, the best ever home made Soup, Lamb, Skate, Pigeon, Chocolate Brownie, Bakewell tart, ice creams , and a mega cheese board, and this is just a selection of the dishes we had.
The service by Johnathan the Maitre 'd and his team was as always, impeccable, with a smile and some knowledgeable information about the menu as well as interesting conversation. The staff here are always well turned out and make you and your guests feel special.
The ambiance of the room is amazing and the view over the Thames estuary is amazing.
You do not get restaurants like this on every street corner, so when you find one use it often.
The Bill for all of this was a tad over £220 quid which is amazingly good value for the quality, quantity and variation of culinary delight we ate, and drank.
Each time I come here it is always a consistently top notch experience. From walking in to walking out. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant; it has not delivered one mouthful of poor quality food to my table in all of the visits with friends and family that my waist line does not want to remember.
Very possibly the best restaurant in the Borough of Southend on Sea.
Certainly had a lovely experience at this restaurant. My friend had recently changed her diet to vegan and the waitress and chef were more than happy to suggest meal options and tweek existing menu to suit her needs. My meal was also delicious and not tweeking was necessary! Service was excellent.
