Poor acoustics in conservatory so can be very noisy. Request a table elsewhere.
After being seated we realised that the noise levels from the party on next table was unacceptable. However, the lovely staff moved us to a quieter part of the restaurant. This was much better even though another large party with several children arrived a bit later. Might have been due to great behaved children and/or better acoustics in that area. Loved the decor there as well. Great chairs. Food overall was good but we were disappointed that potatoes and vegetables were extra. My sea bream was nice but would have been better with the addition of some citrus or other acidic dressing which would have cut through the oily dressing/cooking oil. Great service that couldn’t be faulted from attentive waiting staff/front of house.
Very disappointing Menu offered not same as on website, vegetarian options very limited, poor quality food and expensive.
Lovely meal, good service. All out of the trio of choc moose which was devastating
My second visit in a week and enjoyed it as always with great food , wonderful service and good drink selection and very good place to have a quiet business discussion
Had read some recent bad reviews, but needn’t have worried. Food, service and setting all good. Would go again when in the area.
Have visited this restaurant on many occasions both as a couple as well as business lunches and dinner and always enjoyed the quality of the food and most importantly the level of service which has always been helpful and efficient
The Rupert Brooke has a good reputation so my comments are intended to help rather than complain.
We were a party of 5 adults who were seated in the conservatory on a Sunday afternoon for lunch to celebrate a 40th wedding anniversary. The 2 main issues we noticed were:
(i) we had asked for a quiet table but the conservatory was very noisy especially because of 1 table comprising 2 women and 2 noisy children aged about 5- 7 years. The children were screaming and banging the table. The house staff did not talk to the two women or offer another place/table outside.
(ii) the meal portions were very large except for the salmon. The 2 selected items of (a) chicken breast came with a huge Yorkshire pudding and a large portion of other things and (b) the tomato and vegetable tart was again of a very large size.
Finally we thought the prices of the food and wine was good value
Distracted and rather forgetful waiter, and rather bland food that on one case had to be sent back as it didn't have all its ingredients as specified on the menu. Not sure we got value for money this time.
The biggest disappointment was not having the pasta menu available as it doesn't specify on your website that this is only available for dinner. This was the reason we booked in the first place. The person who sat us and gave us our menus told us that the pasta menu was no longer offered. Our waitress the said it was only offered for dinner...
Very disappointing, either way your website should be updated.
Perfect location for a lovely lunch. Portion sizes are amazing - even a little daunting. Good selection on the menu of lighter bites as well as full meals.
A bit disappointed with no beef burger choice (just wild boar or veggie burger); but the steak, the baby chicken was all good. Desserts were much better with respect to presentation and size though a bit pricy (£8).
The ambience is really nice and our table were well attended. We will definitely go again and try their Sunday roast.
Upmarket good decoration great ambience in a great location easy to park. Friendly service, good menu choices. Without saying, a treat more than a regular eating place from a price point of view.
Good menu choice, excellent service and lovely peaceful surroundings.
Food was excellently cooked and presented.
My only criticism was the dessert- the pastry case was very hard and required spoon and chisel!
Enjoyed our meal very much, ambience ideal . Bit pricy but then the food was very good. Will definitely be dining again.
We sat in a rather dark corner of the restaurant and the food was not as good as we had hoped. To serve risotto and a fish dish without any vegetables or salad was a little underwhelming!
I liked how the tables were well spaced out. The waitresses were very good, friendly and efficient. Good range of food and wine. Great place to meet friends
Poor, slow service. No one in charge of very young and inexperienced staff.
Comfortable venue. Have been here for two birthday lunches now. Food was consistently good and nicely presented. One vegetarian option for Sunday lunch. Young, possibly new, staff - polite and helpful, seemed a bit uncertain about details of food on the menu. Overall consistently ok.
Very friendly service . Nice venue and location. Food was okay but not more than that . The fish and chips was a decent size but was tepid when it arrive.
Lovely dining experience, we turned up early & the staff made sure we were able to have food earlier than planned.
We had starter & main courses, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
Would definitely recommend.
Great food and service, staff very attentive and didn’t have to wait long between courses. Only let down was that we were sat in the conservatory area where there were 2 dogs, one was barking throughout and the other was quite odorous and when your having a nice meal with your family for your birthday that’s not great. Also it would have been nice to be asked as to whether we minded being with dogs as my daughter is not great with them. I would go back but only if they could sit me in the main restaurant area.
We booked the Rupert Brooke on Sunday July 21st for a birthday celebration having previously had a great experience here. However on this occasion we were very disappointed. The service was very poor and the waiting staff had little sense of how the tables were doing. We waited 45 minutes for our food having had 1 drink we took from the bar before sitting and despite the wait for our food we were never offered another drink and was difficult to attract attention of the waitresses
Whilst waiting we had the unfortunate and actually unpleasant opportunity to witness poor hygiene and serving technique of the cooks in the open service kitchen ie picking up food items including slices of meat and fully handling Yorkshire puddings and squashing them down in the plate then constantly wiping forehead and surface and then hands with the same tea towel that completely put us off eating anyway and when it finally came none of us felt we could eat it and left the table with 4 plates untouched
My sister complained to the manager who at first did not seem interested or in fact in control at all with what was happening around him and in fact felt it was normal and expected for the cooks to use their fingers- without gloves and not wearing hair protection- what is wrong with using tongues/forks/spoons? He finally came over to us to apologise and offered to waiver 1 round of drinks. Also conscious of the long wait and that we had not had food he offered us bar snacks which although actually insulting I for one did not wish to eat anything alternatively that had likely been manhandled also. Sadly I do not think any of us will be returning and it completely spoiled the birthday
Very disappointing and rather expensive. There are better places around at this level. Wouldn’t return.
Great food, great service. Would highly recommend. We will be coming back soon.
You used to use fresh vegetables and good pork. You do not now. And you seriously ask for a review?
My friend has had a pretty rough year so far having lost both her parents within 4 months of each other. I took her out for dinner to give her some respite. She managed to laugh a little and welcomed the change of scenery. The food was good although they had run out of our first choices but there was still enough on the menu to tempt us. We thought the service was excellent and were not rushed to make up our minds, the staff were attentive but not intrusive.
Really nice restaurant inside with great service and lovely food at a reasonable price
Service slower than last time we went but overall not at all bad
Excellent service and good meal out with the family !
We have been to the Rupert Brooke on several occasions during the last 12 months and were looking forward to our visit on Saturday. The menu had recently changed and was not what I had seen online prior to booking. The vegetarian choice seemed quite limited and, in the case of the dish on the main menu, seemed a little pricy at £15 for a tomato flan. I had the vegetarian burger which was a little bland, it needed more seasoning and/or some sort of dressing to go with the burger. The other meals were absolutely fine and we all enjoyed our desserts.
We went to the Rupert Brooke for our anniversary meal. Iv been a few times & wanted my husband to try it. He absolutely loved it & we will definitely be going back.
It has such a lovely atmosphere & the staff are all so polite.
The food was delicious.
Can’t wait to return.
Had great expectations as these guys are in the Michelin Guide with a plate: not sure how they got that? Had the Fish and chips, fish wet and soggy, chips greasy. Not good.
Avoid this place. It took 15 minutes to get a drink at the table even though we were quite happy to get them at the bar upon arrival. Our food request took another 15 minutes and starters took even longer to arrive.
One of our fish meals was rancid. Upon complaining we were told it was fresh that morning and we just got a bad one! Later we were told it was a different type of fish!
Whilst a replacement meal was offered our group felt ill and decided to leave. Only the price of the fish dish and a round of drinks were deducted from the meal. Free arrival drinks at our next visit were offered- a total insult.
A real shame and it will be a long time before we return.
A very smart and comfortable restaurant and pub making it an excellent place to relax for food or drink.
The food was very tasty but portions a bit small and having to pay extra for the vegetables makes a noticable difference to the value of the meal.
A really nice place to visit with good quality food so will certainly visit again.
Ambience was good, eating on terrace was very pleasant. Starters were very disappointing.
Have visited the Rupert Brooke on several occasions and always found it a very enjoyable experience with the food always a very high standard and the service is excellent . The choices on all three courses was imaginative and good value. We shall be returning .
Nice place, nice staff, very nice food not a lot more you could ask for.
Excellent meal at The Rupert Brooke - quality food, efficient and friendly service and big portion sizes. We will be back.
Beautiful setting. plenty of parking. Entrance to bar airy and welcoming. Great decor and furnishing. Tables not over close .attentive service .
A great food choice beautifully cooked and presented food.
