Marylebone restaurant The Seashell of Lisson Grove promises to fulfill the fish and chips dreams of any discerning London diner. This fabulous kitchen, according to food critic Alain Ducasse serves up ‘the best fish and chips in London’, which really is saying quite something in this old chip-happy town. The differences between The Seashell of Lisson Grove and your usual neighbourhood F&C peddler are too many and varied to list here but let’s begin with the décor; a superb combination of comfort and style, the space appropriately relaxed but still quite refined enough for special dinners or business lunching. Then of course there’s the location, in chichi Marylebone, close to the West End and London’s many sights and shops but still with the feel of a local restaurant.

An excellent evening with good food and good service. I enjoyed the king prawns I had as a starter and we both enjoyed the skate (one in batter and one in olive oil) we had for the main course. We would certainly go again.

Amazing fish and chips with a quite extensive menu. Freshly cooked and plenty to eat so turn up hungry. Was busy but service still friendly and attentive.

The Seashell has been one of London's go-to places for the best fish and chips for years and that has not changed. The breading is light and not greasy. The service was very attentive and all of our meals were very good.

Good fish and chips in a nicely presented restaurant near Marylebone. The service was good, but the value for money could have been better.

A good, filling meal but at a higher price than perhaps you might expect.

Seashell is a lovely restaurant with excellent staff. We had a very warm welcome when we arrived - first customers of the evening.

We have a niggle though - the fish, whilst hot and fresh was undercooked and the batter wasn't crisp. First time I've ever been offered non crisp fish batter. I would go again in the hope they would rectify those issues.

This restaurant is tucked around the side of a fish/chip shop: when I walked up had a momentary 'oh crap' moment thinking that it was counter service only.

The fish here is exactly as you would want: fresh, served piping hot. Good choice of classic North Sea and English Channel favorites. I started with the whitebait, which were a little overbattered and fried to my taste - somewhat like panko'd fish bullets vs the more tempura style batter I was expecting. But to each their own. The haddock was fantastic. No special seasoning etc: but that's what vinegar's for, right? Chips were obviously homemade, thick, almost chewy.

As a restaurant, while definitely a step above a diner, it is still pretty basic. Nice tables/chairs, professional service, but hyper bright lighting. Wines by the glass were fine if a little expensive (nine pounds for a large Chablis?). A great place to go to experience traditional fish and chips, with a nicer ambience than a standard cafe - but not a place for a romantic date-night event. Interesting collection of naif-folk art on walls.

Easy walk to/from Paddington area, once you figure out how to cross (under) the flyover.

We wanted an authentic Fish & Chips Restaurant and The Seashell did not disappoint. We loved the potato chips that were provided to "nosh". The draft beer was cold and excellent. One of us had the Cod and the other had the Haddock -- both were very good. We did not have an appetiser and the portions were so large we did not have room for dessert even though we didn't eat all the chips! The only negative was that the tip could not be included on our credit card.

Food ok ! Service ????! Watched the table next to me being asked if they wanted coffee and they hadn’t been served they’re main course , there was a filming going on for an USA series called The Walking Dead , think the staff was more interested in that than the customers !! A bit overpriced for Fish & Chips !!!

Excellent service and great food, as always. I had the Haddock + Chips, my colleague had the Grilled Salmon + chips. Both were cooked perfectly and were delicious, as were the bottomless chips. We also had Onion Rings, which were yummy.

This restaurant is god in many ways, its local to me so I like visiting. Unfortunately they let themselves down on the little things, e.g. invariably the chips are lukewarm as if they've been standing around for a while. The lighting is bright to fierce. On the other hand the service is attentive

I've been here many times before but today the service was absolutely awful. The fish is very good but the chips are an extremely small portion. They bring no sides of pickles/gherkins or mushy peas etc which are pretty standard for fish and chips restaurants! Two guests ordered cheesecake - neither of them are greedy sorts- but these portions were about a half to a third of the normal size of a cake you would expect for the price we paid. It looked like they had taken one slice and cut it into two or three portions as if they had run out! The tea was brought as hot water in cups to add our own tea bags- not how tea is made! We ended up with three cups of lukewarm water with tea bags floating in them completely unable to brew a decent strength cup of tea in the tepid water! The waiter was slow and the sides we did order arrived very late. Over all I was extremely disappointed and doubt we will be returning back anytime soon. A real shame considering we have been many times before and used to consider it one of the best fish and chips places in London.

We have been at this restaurant several times in the past, and it has always been a truly wonderful experience, one we looked forward to.
However, on this night, it left much to be desired. While my wife's plaice fish was very flaky and tender, both sets of chips were underdone, and my Scottish langoustines did not taste fresh at all. The staff was charming and friendly as usual, and service still very good. We left disappointed with the evening.

We were there early as had train to catch, but still a pleasant atmosphere and very much enjoyed the fish. Also enjoyed the Picpoul - nice change from Sauvignon Blanc and went very well with the fish. Very nicely decorated, good service, so most enjoyable end to day out.

Our last visit coincided with an equipment crisis in the kitchen but this time everything was back to normal. The fish we ordered, rock salmon, was grilled to perfection and the accompanying chips/salad equally delicious. The waiters were efficient and friendly and the atmosphere of the restaurant, although quite full, was relaxing.

The Seashell continues to provide great fish and chips, and more. I have had take-out from them for years, but never dined in the dining room. I had the same as I would get to take away, but there is more to choose from if you don't fancy battered fish or skate or whatever.

Their portions are generous, and their chips are real potato (as opposed to frozen chips which are ubiquitous and really not good at all). Their mushy peas are perfect. We had a broccoli side dish and it was huge - enough for at least 3 people. There was no room for dessert.

If you want good fish, and good chips, go to the Seashell.

Fantastic evening and perfect service and the freshest food. So fresh they'd run out of a couple of dishes and I'd been really looking forward to some lobster. But it was a Saturday night and they close Sunday so understandable. I'll pre-order next time.
And the lemon sole was amazing. Also fun to find a proper Maitre D' you could talk to.

A bizarre visit to a normally excellent restaurant. The kitchen was experiencing manifold difficulties in equipment failure. No grills were available and only about 20%/25% of the menu was available but only fried fish was available. This caused a degree of panic and frustration on the part of the waiters having to keep saying no to customers. The restaurant should not have opened under the circumstances. A sad occasion for this once proud restaurant.
