Wow couldn't fault this place. From the moment we walked through the door too leavening. The staff was faultless very friendly and nothing too much of a ask. The food was superb and good portion sizes to, which we ended up taking home a doggie bag, this place left me with the feel good factor which topped my night off. Great parking too. Would definitely go back again soon.

We had tried to book a table at short notice here before only living about 15 minuets away in Matlock but they were full but again leaving it last minuet so we ordered a delivery, well all I can say after that I really wanted to have a sit in meal and was not disappointed in any way. The staff were very polite and not in your face but were attentive to your needs. The food was truly in my opinion exceptional and worth every penny. I can't wait to go back again for our next treat. But if you have time all I can say is book early and give it a go I don't think you will be disappointed .

On holiday in the dales but decided we would look for an indian restaurant so checked on line
We saw the reviews for shalimar and remember driving past on the way to Matlock so decided to give it a go
We parked in their car park and entered into a little bit of asia
It had a lovely feel with furniture and decorations to match
We were met by warm and friendly staff who helped explain different dishes and offered to cook some of our favourites from our local indian restaurants
We declined and chòose from the balanced and varied menu and found the starters and main meals advised to be really well cooked and presented we really enjoyed both but over indulged and did not try the sweet menu
We feel spoilt for choice for restaurants living close to London but this restaurant was up there with the best and capped a lovely week in the peak district

We hadn't been to the Shalimar for a while but have friends that go regularly and so when all the family were discussing where to go out we decided on the Shalimar. We had an excellent meal with plenty of choice for everyone. It wasn't full but you got the impression that there was plenty of space even if it had been, they have enough room that they don't have to squash the tables too close together. We will certainly be going back soon.

Visted with my wife and was met by friendly welcoming staff with nothing being to much trouble. Food was outstanding, when they realised we liked our food hot and spicy they gave us an extra hot chilli dip(wonderful) to try with our fish starter and our mushroom starter. Had two wonderful mains (garlic chilli chicken and Lamb rezzila) served with great nan bread's and pelai rice. Great touch on leaving helped us back on with our coats and because it was raining walked us to our cab under there umbrella. Well done to EVERYONE at Shalimar will call back next time we visit the area

We were a group of 6 on a weekend away in Matlock celebrating my 58th birthday. From entering at 7.45 on Friday evening to leaving the Shalimar we could not find fault with the restaurant, food or the staff. There was a really nice ambiance about the place. We sat in the nicely furnished waiting area over a drink perusing the menu and spot on 8.00 ( our table reservation time ) we were asked to take our seats. The menu was excellent in its options offering something different from our normal Indian Restaurants back home. The staff were all kitted out in uniform and looked very smart. The service even extended to them bringing a small dish with the sauce my king prawns were going to be cooked in to see if it was to my liking. An excellent touch. The manager / owner ( Ali ) was also very welcome and professional. He even called us in the afternoon to check that we were still coming and if we needed any help in arranging a taxi he would organise that for us. We took up his offer and the taxi arrived at our apartment on time and this was followed by him personally taking time at the end of the evening to run us all back in the restaurants own 8 seater taxi. Without wishing to wax lyrical about everything we ate etc etc we would whole heartedly recommend the Shalimar to anyone in this area of the Peak District. The food and service was second to none, both the food and drinks were very reasonably priced and finally the other one thing we appreciated, the tables are set out with plenty of room between you and the next tables allowing easy access and conversation.

A lovely place where staff are instantly welcoming from the moment you walk in. It is a nice balance of formality, where you could eat in smart clothes for say a date, or casual clothes for a birthday party, and neither would be out of place.

The food wad good, and staff asked if we wanted our dish hotter or milder.

The prices were average for eating out, but the food was lovely.

Me and my brother struggled to find somewhere nice at late notice for Mothers day, but I found the Shalimar via Google and thought it was great.

We were greeted with friendly staff, who took and hung up our coats. The service was very fast for the most part, and the restaurant itself is a very quiet and relaxing place. The food was very nice, although looking forward to trying different things as I really stuck to my usual indian order!

The prices I would say are mid priced to what I've had before, but the setting is worth paying that little extra to enjoy your evening. Everything is very tidy and clean.

I was asked where I was from, and the staff member gave us 3x £10 off vouchers, for the 3 couples. Very kind, and will definitely be back.

We returned to Shalimar as my choice for my birthday meal, it was another excellent meal, with lovely festive atmosphere (very close to Christmas) and was very busy. However the attention from the staff was as good as ever and when they discovered it was my birthday an unordered cake arrived with a large indoor firework, happy birthday was sung and on leaving they gave me a birthday card with a voucher for money off our next visit. All completely unexpected, very thoughtful and a nice end to a lovely day. The friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food mean that we will be returning very soon, excellent job Shalimar and thank you

The venue is nice, the food is delicious, the staff are really friendly and funny its just a little expensive in my opinion.

We paid £50 for 2 of us and we shared a rice and a naan and didn't have any alcoholic drinks. I think £11 for a main should really include rice at the least. I've eaten in Indian restaurants in the past of the same standard that include rice with the price of a main. I've also had complimentary poppadums' and chutneys from other places. It was £5 for 4 poppadums' and a tray of dips at the Shalimar.

I enjoyed the evening overall though. But next time I want an Indian I will stay in Notts. It wasn't worth the travel time plus the £20+ more it cost to eat here when I can get just as good for less on my doorstep.

This was my first visit to the Shalimar. The ambience was excellent in the restaurant and staff were very welcoming to my party of four. The menu is extensive and has a large choice for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. I am of Indian origin so look at the food served very critically. My party chose a range of dishes and based on a taste of those, I can fully recommend the food. For the critics of this establishment, let me say that the staff/owner asked us how spicy we would like the dish to be and the dish was adjusted to our specification. This suited our palate and my party was very pleased with the 3 course meal. I will try this restaurant again and check that the outstanding meal we had was repeatable before giving 5 stars.

Overpriced and lacking in character, this restaurant reminds me of a motorway services in its location and blandness. The cost of the food cannot be justified by its quality, it's just run of the mill indian. I have experienced much better in Birmingham at half the price.

Our waiter discussed the menu and asked about our preferences for spices and after selecting our mains he brought some samples of our dishes to ensure we were comfortable with the level of spices.

The meal was superb, with well balanced flavours and one of the best naan breads in ages.

We would certainly recommend this restaurant to all, well worth the visit.

All three of us enjoyed our Wednesday night experience at the Shalimar. My chicken vindaloo had great depth of flavour, and was nice and hot (spicy). My wife had the keema madras, and our daughter the chicken tikka masala, both excellent. Side dishes of pilau rice, cauliflower bhaji, and a plain nan, all at a high standard. Will definitely visit again if we are in the area. Service was attentive and friendly.

Other restaurants could learn a thing or two about service from the Shalimar. We visited on a busy Saturday night (but because of the excellent food and service I suspect they are always busy - so I would recommend booking). They had 8 members of staff working and even the owner was clearly pitching in to make sure their customers were served seamlessly but what made it special was everyone kept an eye on every table which made the service outstanding.

The food equaled this outstanding service with a comprehensive menu and had clearly explained spicy levels. The waiters knew about the food and were happy to explain and offer advice. I wanted lemon rice which wasn't on the menu but they happily provided it and it was wonderful.

I booked here based on the Trip Advisor reviews which made this restaurant the 5th best Indian Restaurant in the UK, and unfortunately (maybe because of heightened expectations) I was not overly impressed.

The service was attentive and very friendly, but the menu and the food were predictably familiar and nothing special.

NB. This restaurant is a £15 taxi ride away from the centre of Matlock
