The Shepherd and Dog
We want you to enjoy our warm welcome whether you join us for a lovely dinner in the evening, a great value weekday lunch or the perfect Sunday roast.
Having eaten at the Shepherd and Dog on several occasions I was very disappointed last Wednesday lunch time.
We waited at least 20 minutes for someone to take our order and it was nearly an hour from when we sat down until we got any food. We chose from the a la carte menu,
in the past food has been excellent but on Wednesday the starters and main course were very mediocre. Nothing like the taste, presentation and quality on previous visits. The only saving grace was the sharing desert. We stayed at the table chatting for at least another hour and the desert plates and coffee cups were just left and not cleared away.
My friends and I have often visited for special occasions but at £40 a head for a mid week lunch without wine we expect better service and food.
Booked for Sunday lunch and it did not disappoint. The waitresses we very attentive and there was no waiting around for our table. Plenty of roast potatoes! One thing I will say is the size of the coke bottle which are tiny and around £3. I think this could be looked at if you both had a couple it would push the bill up.
Although the staff were very pleasant, they made no effort to clear a lot of rubbish left behind by previous diners under the tables. Also, the ladies toilet was littered all evening with empty toilet rolls and therefore I don’t think it was checked regularly. Food was disappointing and it’s usually good.
food was a bit slow to come out but was a lovely evening!
Order was wrong and when it did finally come out it wasn’t very nice! Such a shame as previously when I have been it’s been nice!
Always a pleasure dining at this restaurant food and staff outstanding
Good food and service nice drinks and great atmospherrv
A good gastro pub for meeting up with friends and family. Not too noisy so you can chat comfortably.
Food well presented and tasty.
Good vegetarian options, even one vegan!
Had to wait quite a while and asked three times for a coffee. Was given excuse that they were under staffed - hadn't noticed that before as the service was ok.
Great restaurant. Food is very good, especially as it is always busy. Service is equally on point. Well done S&D !
Lovely lunch as always - this time from the festive menu
Always have a great meal here. Food is great, staff are friendly. Would definitely recommend.
Early evening dinner from the festive menu some nice dishes starters of breaded Brie and a avocado and prawn cocktail delicious roast beef with lots of trimming and a superb desert of a festive bread and butter pudding the cocktails were lovely service very good bit noisy but to be expected Christmas parties I will be back for the roast turkey I think the festive menu is great value and very tasty
This is our second visit to the Shepherd and Dog and we enjoyed the food there and will differently be going back again.
Very loud due to the live singer in the bar. Over an hour for the starters to come out and then mains out as soon as starters were finished. Asked if we could have some bread while waiting for the starters and were told the kitchen was too busy. They did take the starters off of the bill. However this was a treat for a friends birthday so was ruined. Not keen at all and won’t be returning.
Good quality food and great service
The staff were very welcoming and friends and exceedingly helpful have to say they made us feel like special guests
The food was very good my only complaint would be that they put nuts in the chocolate brownie although it doesn’t mention nuts on the menu - bit of an oversize there I think and it did spoil my daughters dessert
Early dinner sitting 17-00 as always the cocktails were great the berry fizz like sherbet we shared a sticky chilli beef had a nice kick good size portion my partner had the house special fish and thick cut chips which was enormous and very tasty large flakes of haddock I had the Shepard burger with a extra beef patty 😆 we finished it off with a nice brownie a tad over cooked last one we had was very soft and stick but again it was delicious a Irish coffee rounded the evening up to perfection great value nice staff it was quite as it was early just right it a local favourite for us and I highly recommend it
What an extremely disappointing experience we had tonight visiting this restaurant. I had made this booking earlier in the week for us and friends visiting from Australia only to get there and be advised that the table we were to sit at was outside the restaurant next to the extremely loud bar. We immediately complained and were told this was due to us booking on line with Open table and the restaurant being full and this table was the only place available. We were then told they would try and accommodate us so we purchased drinks from the bar. After 10 minutes we were told it’s that table or nothing. We decided we had no choice but to leave no way could we talk the bar was full to overflowing with 2 birthday parties and a live singer not conducive to the calm and much quieter restaurant. We would love to know why we were offered a restaurant table on this site. We can only state we will never return to the Shepherd and Dog again
Food not as good as it has been for the price it was a bit on the expensive side
Starters was not bad but to much sauce
Main was not that good as was tough and over cooked
Dessert was excellent
Had dinner here quite early (6.30pm) on a Saturday night at the beginning of October. Several groups of hen parties and noise level was very loud when we entered the restaurant. However, we were sat at a window table overlooking the beer garden, so in a quieter spot than a table in the middle. Attentive service and food was good and plentiful. Unsure if this is the case if you dined there later in the evening as imagine would be extremely busy. The beer garden is quite big with lots of garden furniture and looks like a nice place to go for a drink in the summer months. Unfortunately, we could see lots of smokers outside from our table and trust the restaurant has a separate non-smoking area for the summer.
Excellent food. Attentive service. Really lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon!
Superb food, great atmosphere and service was friendly and of a high standard.
I visited again this weekend for a evening meal it was a little noisy or me but I was given a different table which helped the first cocktail we had came in wrong glass and was only half full this was changed but not to the usual standards the prawn starter was very nice and the main of Chateau Bre And was delicious as was the chocolate Brownie staff were not great this evening spilled cocktails but new members need to give time to train I always like the Shepard and will return but this evening experience was let down by service but I will return
Good all round. Cocktails came tasting quiet different to the last batch. None bad but prefer consistency for £10 a go.
Food and service amazing.
Went here for date night with my husband and ordered the 'large sea bass fillet with bacon croquette'. When it arrived the sea bass was barely big enough for a chilled and so dry! The bacon croquette was dark brown and tasted like oil! Such a shame as the food here used to be lovely. Very disappointed.
Always have a fabulous time here food and service amazing
Great atmosphere and even better food and cocktails, would recommend this place to everyone!
The food was well presented, but nothing special; service was adequate but not brilliant; highly priced for modest quality; the noise level was such that it was difficult to hear oneself speak. Gave the impression of a TOWIE venue.
Nice new cocktail the Berry Pie was excellent the main was nice but item missing which came late
Also long wait for our Irish’s coffee service was not up to usual standards but good experience
Friendly staff, good overall service will definitely return and recommend to friends and family.
Went with the family for Father’s Day, was busy but staff good and nice atmosphere. Food was great
Lovely evening meal for me and my boyfriend, defo be coming back soon
I’m really torn - I’ve been several times but never on a Sunday before and I’ve always enjoyed it
On Sunday I really didn’t enjoy the experience - I’ve never been anywhere so noisy and that was before the singer started his set - we literally had to shout across the table at each other if we wanted to speak - my fault entirely for not checking but I don’t wish to sit eating my food with somebody singing close by - I actually felt like I was at a butlins - In saying that the roast dinners were excellent - really tasty and I enjoyed mine immensely - I like the shepherd & dog but just not for me on a Sunday
Food was ok - quite nice, my husbands starter was forgotten we had to ask for it and when it came it was cleary rushed and a smaller portion - (my friends husband had the same)
Service was fine, bar area was nice and the atmosphere was good.
New starter a special on menu was the sliders which were excellent along with the lamb chops 3 on plate good size nice and pink fish and chips as always was excellent and a white chocolate cream brûlée’s couple of beery fizz cocktails again superb and a large Irish coffee all on point service is friendly a regular for me always on point nice traditional English fair recommended
While the food was very good, it was very noisy, also the service wasn’t very good and had to ask for our main meal. They seemed more interested in the big table.
Great place to eat staff amazing
We've been to the S&D a lot in the past four years but it has really gone downhill. We had a table for seven of us on Saturday night for a friend's birthday. We were crammed into a tiny space only really big enough for a table for four. Because of the amount of people crammed into the space the noise level is unbelievably high making it hard to even talk to the person next to me.
I had called ahead to say it was my friend's birthday and they said they would bring something out for us to sing to him, I reminded them when we arrived as well but nothing materialised so it just got left which was disappointing.
The food we ordered was nice but £32 for a steak really is taking the p**s! The menu is very limited and pretty basic as well. It's a shame as we don't have that many choices of nice pubs in the area.
Think they need to extend the menu and take out a few tables to allow for space to sit comfortably.
Food is always very good thought menu needed more to choose from on the main course staff excellent drinks very good always a good time at the Shepherd and dog
Visited on Sunday evening and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the ambience it is quite a lively place but I thought that added to the atmosphere guess if your after a quiet meal then perhaps this isn’t for you but if your looking for a good vibe and scrumptious food then The Shepherd and Dog is just the ticket ;)
Always has a great atmosphere here - and food never disappoints.
