Great food, service & ambiance
The place is extremely cosy, with a fireplace and a picturesque interior and exterior! The ambience is so welcoming and the food is nice.
Fantastic liver and bacon yum! Will be coming back for more tasty farr
A typical old rustic pub. Good for drinks but roast dinner was cold and they ran out of all puddings apart from one.
Bit noisy, but friendly staff and good food. Close to all tourist points of interest.
Family reunion with in laws not seen here from US since 2009 so was hoping for a good reliable meal which was what we got! Excellent service and great food... happy to recommend and will definitely return.
Came here for a casual evening meal with drinks. Sadly, Timothy Taylors Landlord was not available on draught so had Bass instead which was just OK.
It was busy on this Friday evening so service was understandably a bit slow.
Big selection of starters & mains from both the blackboard & printed menu so we all had a mix, everything was good & the portions were generous.
Staff were extremely polite & attentive - couldn't have asked for any more from them on such a busy evening.
A super evening at the six bells. Challenges with service were very visible- and especially given the good weather and the football. If they get this
latter topic right I would have scored a full 5 stars!
Overcharged or overpriced?
Visited Sunday 17 June at 4.45pm (but not for Father's Day)
£113 for four roast beef dinners (£14.50 each = £58) , one child's ice cream and two rounds of drinks (3 pints morretti, two halves moretti and four ales).
My husband paid the bill, but I should have checked it.
In terms of the food, just two roast potatoes each that tasted like frozen rather than fresh. I don't think the mixed vegetables were fresh, but frozen.
I guess it's too late now to query the bill but maybe it could be looked at by Six Bells?
Enjoyable atmosphere despite being a quiet night. Good choice of mains and puddings although the crumble was more of a solid topping. The chilli was spicy unusual in pubs I find. The fish and chips universally liked. I am sure we will return in the future.
Six Bells is my favourite St Albans pub. Great service and food and a lovely pub too. Staff are always fab!
Not as good as normal ... !
Lovely to be near an open fire makes you feel comfortable
Cannot fault the service and food , very friendly staff and the Sunday roast was perfect lovely and fresh food !! We look forward to go back again soon
Lovely little country pub. Nice menu for a Sunday roast. Roast was generous but lacked taste. My wife had the fish pie which was also not great. The service was really good and the pub delightful.
We love this pub, a beautiful 16th century building, open fire, great beers and great food, served by very friendly people
Simply good food, service and atmosphere...a great venue / pub for a low key / relaxed evening.
We had a table in the bar sadly dominated by middle aged men drinking at the bar, watching sport, talking in very loud voices with a lot of swearing! I complained on behalf of a number of diners and the culprits were asked to quiten down and they thankfully did. Fishcakes weren't very fishy! Shant be returning.
Good pub grub and great choice of spirits with recommendations from bar staff .
They put up with our group of 10 which wasn't always easy !
By the time we ate some dishes weren't available which was a shame .However
Portions were huge and service was excellent .
Delicious food and very friendly staff made for a delightful evening
Great place for lunch but booking essential for weekend lunchtimes. People who came after us had 40 min wait for food.
Our food was delicious, ample portions & the service was very prompt & cheery! The menu and specials give you a fantastic range of dishes to choose from. We had Wild Boar Sausage & Mash and Chicken Curry for our main courses. We both had Eton Mess cheesecake to finish which was the top dish of the day for me!
The pub had a lot of punters with dogs whilst we were there. Having previously been bitten I am still a little nervous around dogs but they were a fairly docile bunch fortunately!
Attended the six bells with the in laws for Sunday lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday.
The Pub was very busy to begin with but filtered out and by the time we ate at 14.30 it was fine.
The food and the service was excellent and I would certainly return.
I have visited this pub before and never been disappointed. The food is always very good, and the bar staff are very friendly and welcoming. The service is similarly very good - the staff are attentive without being overbearing, so you never feel forgotten and at the same time don't feel you being rushed either. There is a big car park at the Verulamium Museum, so you won't struggle to find parking either.
All-in-all, another very pleasant evening. I would happily recommend this pub to any first-timers.
We found the pub friendly and atmospheric and the food yummy.
This was our 2nd visit this year and the food was even better than we remembered. A bottle of wine was reasonable and the service was good. Particularly nice for a cold winter's day as there is a large log fire in the main bar.
Went for my daughters birthday amazing food attentive staff just all round amazing my daughter said it was the best cod she had ever eaten
As always, varied menu, good good and friendly service.
Lovely Sunday lunch - good value and plenty of choice. Service was very slow - don't go if you are in a hurry. Very popular pub and it gets crowded.
Good traditional pub grub with good choice of beers and a busy and bustling atmosphere.
Yet another lovely meal here - great pub with terrific atmosphere. Staff lovely, nothing too much trouble
We have dined here on many occasions before and usually had a good experience. This time around it was Fathers day and a very warm day as well. Typically this brought out extra customers and this is where the Six Bells falls short of a 5 * review.
They had a number of tables that were reserved, therefore they had an idea of how much food they would need to get in. The garden was packed obviously with extra customers just coming in off the street. In the past the food has been excellent, cut from the bone, thick sliced. This time it looked more like pre-packed food, the sort you can buy from a local supermarket, presumably because they were running short. We were told there would be a forty minute delay for the food because they were so busy. Again I have to ask why? Our table was booked for 1400 for 6 people, ergo the Six Bells knew there would be 6 diners coming in at 1400.
Too often this has happened in the past, not necessarily this particular venue, but where I have booked a table and they are very busy with extra customers, customers that haven't booked seem to get a priority service. In my opinion this is wrong. The customers that book in advance are more likely to book again. Those coming in off the street could well be just passing through.
The Six Bells is a great historic pub in a beautiful area. It's great for just popping info for a drink or having a meal. Whichever you decide to do the staff are always friendly and attentive. Great pub!
Great pub, great food and great service! Definitely return again. Warm and friendly.
Good food but very busy. Staff very friendly and efficient.
As ever great Sunday lunch/early dinner, good value, great portions, good choice of beer, very friendly pub
We love this pub. Great food, great service & most importantly, dog friendly
We found that The Six Bells was a lovely, very atmospheric, friendly pub. It's great for lunch when visiting the nearby Roman museum, theatre and park area, as we were. Lunch was served very promptly, looked good and was scrumptious! We highly recommend it!
Great food, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff in this 16th century in
Great food, great ales, great atmosphere, great fun.
The Six Bells is a lovely pub serving nice food with very good service. They have a small dining area separate to the main lounge. Have to say it seemed quite expensive.
