Sharing dishes play a big part in the make-up of the menu with, for example, whole slow roasted shoulders of lamb available for groups of 4-6.
The restaurant inhabits a 200-year-old former Almshouse and is deceptively large with 5 separate dining areas and a secluded rear garden/patio. It can accommodate parties of up to 50 and a variety of set menus are available which can be tailored to your individual requirements.
A great value set lunch/early bird menu is available 12-3pm and 6-7pm Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). 2 courses for £15 and 3 courses for £19. Outside tables cannot be booked but on arrival if you do wish to sit outside then please ask.
Dinner: Monday - Thursday: 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Dinner: Friday 6:00 pm - 10:30 pm
Saturday : 12.00 pm – 10.30 pm
Sunday : 12.00 pm – 9.00 pm
Booked for my wife 's birthday. Peak time on a Saturday evening but we were taken straight to our table and received excellent service all night. Food was superb. Four of us shared the sharing board then followed with a steak , a pork escalope and 2 stuffed lamb specials. We shared a pudding and had 2 coffees, 2 soft drinks, A pint and a bottle of champagne. Bill came to £41 a head including tip. Fantastic food and service and good value for the quality of the food. Would recommend to anyone. Only negative was limited beers available, but you would go here for the food primarily.
We enjoyed a lovely meal on Saturday. The staff were helpful and friendly. Food tasted amazing : )
Lovely meat, interesting specials and I could probably eat 20 of those haggis fritters. Good value
The St. John Chop house was a delightful little gastro pub. We had the lamb rack to share and it was perfectly cooked! Definitely worth a visit
Our second visit. We liked the food, the wine and the service. Definitely recommended.
Lovely restaurant, good food and service. Really enjoyed it.
Easy location in Cambridge to meet without all the usual hassle. Lovely building and a great ambience. Staff very accommodating and we overstayed our welcome but they didn't seem to mind. Food was delicious - we only had the soup and main meal finished with a nice coffee. Highly recommend.
As always the St. John's chop house never fails to deliver on quality, service and ambiance. The staff are friendly knowledgeable and attentive.
One of them best restaurants in Cambridge: I live the ambience, the food, the wine and the service.
My Food had been left under the heat lamp too long my red cabbage was dry. My partner had a very chewy steak and although the manager compensate he did try the explain the reasons why it was poor in all honesty coming from a family run butchers and eating steaks all over the world, it was just poor quality.
Very welcoming staff, menu with unusual and very interesting courses. Perfect!
I booked a table tor my husbands birthday. When we used to go years ago it was a very lively place. However, we were the only people in the restaurant and it was cold. After a while three ladies came in but there was no atmosphere. The food was ok, but the starter of herring was very poor value for money. The waitress did her best. She was very smiley and attentive.
The food at the chop house is first class really tasty .if I was being picking I would say the chairs are abit uncomfortable
Friendly staff, quick service, delicious food! I'd recommend.
Lovely place. Bit pricey for what it was though- meat, pots, veg.
I have been to St Johns Chop House several times in the past and had a much better experience. This time we felt we were rushed, no sooner had the food order been taken the side starter was on the table a few minutes later the wine arrived followed by seconds later by the main course, soon followed by deserts. If there was a large group booking in that evening then we would of understood the rush of the food but there wasn't.
Even though the evening felt rushed it hasn't put me off going back .
The food was high quality British cuisine, we really enjoyed it. For indecisive people I can recommend the starter plate to share
Good value early dining meal. Nice table in the window. Pleasant and helpful staff.
We have been to the restaurant before and have previously had a good experience. However the Barnsley chop was tough and did not have much meat on it. The lemon sole special was on the bone ( for the price I expected it to be off the bone). The fish itself was pretty tasteless but then I was surprised that Lemon Sole was on the menu. The Sauce Rose did not go with the dish at all.
Really nice sunday roast. Would just have preferred the food to be hotter - a problem with so many restaurants. But overall nice meal
Myself and my childhood friends meet once a month for a good old get together and usually it involves a meal out. We booked St Johns Chophouse via the Open Table website and was greeted by friendly staff when we arrived. We were sat upstairs away from the main dining room and this room did get busier during the evening. The food was nice but very expensive and we will probably go again but for a special occasion rather than our usual get together meal.
I am not sure we got value for our £300 bill but the food was tasty and we left empty plates.
Love, love, love the food and wine. My dad is a hard-to-please steak guy and he did not complain. It gets quite noisey when the place is full (at least in the first room we were sat in), but I don't know what else you can do about that, apart from playing no music, which they already do.
Very pleasant evening, if rather noisy (the acoustics tend to amplify all the conversation and it was full of very lively parties!). When I drew attention to my overcooked beef medallions (steak, meant to be rare to medium rare), there was an immediate apology and the meal was replaced without a murmur with a perfectly cooked replacement (and I got a quick apology). The others enjoyed their food and I'll definitely come back.
Service and food great - especially for meat eaters
Excellent meal, not cheap but worth the expense. We had all courses and each one was as good as the rest
Our 4th time now and as always excellence is their priority... Food, service and price. Welcoming and warm. Cannot praise St. John's chop house enough.
Great Sunday roast, the restaurant was quiet initially but soon picked up.
The food was great.
The wine list was focused on European wines and some new world options would be nice.
Amazing food and ambiance!! Would definitely go again!
All the door was well presented and extremely tasteful. Presentation was also outstanding.
Ambiance, amazing especially for solo diner!
Food was very good, but too many staff! They were tripping over themselves and felt like I was being watched, it was getting a bit annoying! Might try the one in Kings Parade next time.
Great food as always..however, service was almost too quick, pre starter nibbles (cracking and bread) came same time as starter, and mains as soon as we'd finished them. We essentially had 4 courses in just over an hour...with not a lot of breathing space!
Food lovely, but definitely needed to be slightly slower.
A large group arrived similar time, so whether it was to get others done before a massive order, but that shouldn't be at the detriment to other diners.
The food is good. However it is always a little bit cold in the restaurant area. The venison steak is excellent
My second visit to St John's Chop House was as delightful in the company of one other, as my first visit was as part of a party of 14.
The ambience is excellent, the staff are genuinely knowledgable and attentive, and the quality of the food is top knotch.
If you're a planner, the team will help you book ahead and verify everything you need is available.. If you show up they will take excellent care of you and your party, or just you if you're dining alone as I saw :)
Now officially my go-to destination as I know the standard is excellent - keep it up!
Went here on a Saturday evening with our son who had experienced the earlybird menu available on some weekdays. His recommendation certainly lived up to our expectations. Food was fab & service great. Despite being Saturday night (though our reservation for for about 6.15pm) there was sense of being rushed because someone else needed your table 90 mins later. The only reason I haven't rated St John's Chophouse as outstanding was the volume of table lights (oil with a wick) - they created a lovely atmosphere but I found so many of them just a liitle overbearing re fumes. However, I hope I will be back another time, though I see a new partner restaurant so might try there too :)
We've meant to try St John's Chop House, and were very glad we did. The staff were very welcoming and made us feel really at home. The early evening menu was great value at 2 courses for £13, because the food was so delicious - our slow-cooked lamb was beautiful, tender and flavoursome, with perfectly cooked vegetables and delicious sauce. Thank you for a great meal!
Looked after by knowledgable and very helpful waiter. The menu was good the steaks were good and well cooked. In all we had a very pleasing evening and would visit again and recommend to anyone
Quality food and great service 😊
Very disappointing. Great service which was let down by a poor main course, steak was very fatty and chewy!
We dined for Sunday lunch here recently and we must say the food was excellent. Service was first class. There was a nice ambiance about this place. Great for kids too with kids catered for.
