Was a fantastic choice of place to eat. Staff were very passionate and knowledgeable of the food and drink and ingredients used.
Stunning food, beautiful setting would certainly come again!
Perfect food, excellent service, wonderful setting. Good cocktails
Faultless from start to finish, food excellent! Would recommend to anyone.
The quality of the food was good . My friends had the special pie which they enjoyed but said it was highly seasoned. I had the vegetarian mac and cheese. It was tasty but I felt it should have included some veg for the price. It was very poor value for money . The strawberry and lavender sundae was simply strawberry and cream , this was disappointing.
Top notch dining experience: great setting with the table overlooking the river. Interesting and tasty starters of scallops and ham fritters, with equally delicious mains consisting of ample portions of duck breast and catch of the day. Varied wine list and a lovely bottle of Primitivo to accompany the meals. Attentive and personable waiting staff.
Very average menu given the restaurant’s reputation & prices.
Food ok to good quality. Service excellent. Wine excellent. Staying & ambiance excellent.
Overall - disappointing menu.
We were celebrating our 30th Anniversary and decided to book at the Star - we were not disappointed the staff are excellent and we had a very enjoyable lunch.
Excellent meal we paid about £75 per head for 3 courses at lunch including 2 drinks each . Faultless cooking in the modern British style reflected in the price . Well worth a visit .
Really lovely atmosphere., attentive staff and wonderful food
Overall it was a decent meal, the waiting staff were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately the evening was spoiled due to being rushed, we had only just finished our starter with the plates still on the table when our main arrived which we were not yet ready for. We therefore didn’t enjoy our main and was overfaced resulting in not ordering dessert/ coffee etc. This has put us off coming back as it was a special occasion and it was spoiled
We chose The Star Inn The City as we wanted to sit outside - the covered terrace was perfect and with the heater we were very warm, even though it was a damp October evening. Food was excellent and service was great. Will definitely be going again!
Excellent service, food & drink. Well worth the visit.
Excellent food, the only negative was that the staff could have been a little more attentive. Drinks service was slow and the staff could have topped up our glasses periodically rather than just leaving our Champagne in an ice bucket and leaving it to us.
Lovely food, with a relaxed atmosphere and excellent service.
Food was very good, service was impeccable. I'll definitely return.
Excellent food. We dined outside and had great views of the river. Good atmosphere. Only negative point was that we had to chase for our drinks to be brought to us and service was quite slow following a good start. Overall, strongly recommended though.
In a city awash with crass and mediocre pubs and eateries, the Star Inn is thankfully a world away and a very welcome watering hole in a prime position. Step through the hidden gate by the river and guests will find themselves transported into a more refined echelon of York city. The Food is excellent as is the Table service, the staff are knowledgeable, attentive and friendly and additionally they welcome well-behaved canine companions in a few areas outside of the main restaurant. We had a table for Sunday lunch in the ‘riverside room’, with several other parties in there it had a pleasant ambience and by no means did other diners chatter overpower our smaller group. We weren’t rushed and spent a very pleasant and cosy two hours sauntering through two courses. Can’t recommend enough
Would definitely recommend, great food, very attentive waiter, loved the cocktails recommended by the waiter. Overall very good experience. If in area again would be returning thank you 😊
Yet another superb visit. Staff very welcoming and very helpful and sttentive. Quality of food is second to none. Wholly recommend a visit
Great service and great food. Chilled atmosphere but vibrant at the same time. Lovely setting. Will be back.
Food choice is poor if you are a non red meat eater and expensive with a “carrot” main course at £18. Portion sizes also vastly reduced from what they were and basic dishes which don’t inspire which is a shame as this is what we used to expect from SITC. Great setting and ambience - comfortable seating and excellent, attentive staff.
We both had certain turf was really good service was wonderful topped by a lovely bottle of red wine which was recommended by the waiter definitely will return
Great location. Good atmosphere - light and fairly well spaced. Food and service very good quality although on the expensive side.
Lovely lunch on the terrace, warmed by the heaters. Great service, lovley food. All in all - excellent.
Lovely building by the river. Decor modern and welcoming.
Service efficient and friendly. Good superb!!
The Star remains one of the top restaurants in York due to the quality of food and drink and it’s location and ambience.
It was unfortunate that a number of items on the menu were not available on the evening that I visited with my wife and two daughters. In a restaurant that has an extensive menu the aforementioned would not be a problem but as the Star’s menu is not extensive the choice of meal was very limited.
However we fully enjoyed our evening.
We ate on the terrace overlooking the River Ouse
We took 4 hours over our meal and never felt rushed
Fabulous time at this iconic restaurant on the river in York restaurant.
We love it here and brought our American visitors for dinner. As always everything was lovely and even though it’s October it’s still nice sitting on the patio. Well worth a visit and one of our favourite spots in York.
Amazing steak, blue cheese sauce was perfect. Oysters were the best ive ever had. Worth every penny.
We had a lovely meal for 2. Excellent service and a lovely atmosphere. We both had steak which was perfectly cooked and can be recommended. Would definitely go again
Lovely Setting , Good service, the staff is very attentive. I was disappointed as my chosen main a signature dish was not available. The food was well presented and tasted ok. My starter was lovely (scallops cooked to perfection) my husband's tartar was a little under-seasoned and could have been cut a little finer. Our main of duck was again cooked perfectly but the hashbrown was very salty.
The atmosphere was great and the table we had was very nice.
Delicious food, stunning decor and attentive staff. Would highly recommend for a treat.
Fantastic food, atmosphere and staff. Will definitely return
Sadly not the choices available as "nibbles" we wanted - olives one of them! 20 mins seated, had no offer of drinks - got up to a waitress in adjacent sector for an order, whilst adjacent table, arriving after our table, had attentive service. Food was good. Espresso coffee tasty. Wine fine, but we thought pricey. Hey, we're from Yorkshire & were celebrating 23 years of experience! Received a lovely decorated desert plate, fruit etc & a truffle bit - we didn't order a dessert so it was lovely just to receive a little token !! Staff lovely all together
Perfect venue on the terrace by the river for the best Sunday Roast in York.
Staff with great attitude & very helpful.
Highly recommended 👌
It is unrealistic to try and compare this restaurant with the experience of eating at Harome, however, service aside our visit was a little disappointing. The Roast beef was accompanied by potatoes that lacked crispiness and the Caesar salad was just ok. There are many restaurants that have a similar offering for Sunday lunch in York so to justify the price I would have expected some real differentiator
We will return again! Best restaurant in York. Highly recommended.
Stunning surroundings and food … thoroughly enjoyed the evening and to top it off the waitress was very attentive asking about our day at the races and I mentioned it was my birthday and she brought out a plate containing a chocolate truffle and strawberries with a “happy birthday” written in chocolate
