Located in the Old Engine House on the edge of York's Museum Gardens in a riverside setting close to the historic Lendal Bridge, The Star Inn The City has an enviable position, which we aim to match with the best produce God's Own Country has to offer and genuine Yorkshire hospitality for the 'whole package'.

We offer an all day menu which can be enjoyed for both lunch and dinner, as well as serving up breakfast Friday to Sunday, and on Sunday's we serve up our famous Sunday roasts between 12-4pm.

We pride ourselves on being a a food-led celebration destination, with guests being able to enjoy view of the River Ouse from our Garden Room or outside on our riverside terrace. For more intimate occasions we also offer two exclusive Private Dining rooms for celebrations such as graduations, weddings and birthdays.

    Lovely food in cosy surroundings and attentive service. We really enjoyed the food, my fish main was a little oversalted but apart from that very good. Interesting dishes and nice dessert too.

    Fantastic food service was impeccable for the first time in a long time felt valued as a customer food was spot on worth every penny drinks seemed a little expensive but thats a choice highly recommend definitely return

    Went here for our anniversary. It's a lovely location beside the river. Particularly in Winter with Christmas lights up and a festive menu. The staff were attentive but also left us to enjoy our orders. The food and drinks were perfect. Recommend the parsnip soup starter and ox cheek main. Cocktails were tasty. There was also wine suggestions to accompany the food. It felt like a real treat dining here. Hope to go again for an occasion soon.

    Fabulous venue, good and service. Exceptionally cold day which provided a draft of cold air every time the door opened- unfortunately I was sat in the draft flow. Nothing could have prevented this but thought worth a mention.

    Amazing food in a beautiful setting, I was there with 3 friends having a catch up, we weren’t rushed and everyone enjoyed the experience. Our server Lumi was lovely.

    Food was ok, but nothing special - we had high hopes and maybe we've been spoiled elsewhere. Service whilst friendly was distinctly average, we sat for ages after our mains with empty glasses and no puddings. If we wanted any service, we had to flag our waiter down. (He was very good when he was at the table though) All in all just a bit disappointing.

    We had Sunday lunch while in York for the weekend. We found the place via a quick Google search. The food was lovely, but it was let down by the very blunt steak knives we were given. We had 1 course and 1 drink each and the total was around £70 which I think is quite over priced for what it was. When we'd paid we noticed a 12% 'optional' gratuity, which to me wasn't optional at all as it wasn't mentioned to us before paying. The service was fine but didn't justify a tip in my opinion. Wouldn't recommend and we're unlikely to return.

    The food whilst okay could not be classed as outstanding. My burger was just warm and my the Sole which my colleague chose was overcooked and dry. The staff did remedy by replacing the sole dish which whilst extremely small was good. If I attended again would definitely not choose either item again

    We did not consider the cooking made the best of the ingredients used. The result was not very exciting. In particular the egg custard dish for my dessert was not the traditional recipe and too stodgy (cornflour?) and the cube of celeriac rosti was too much celeriac and not enough crispy bits. apart from the lack of inspiration in the food everything else was fine.

    We had a lovely brunch experience. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I asked for a window table overlooking the river and the table we were given was perfect! Our food was lovely and reasonably priced.
