Went for full English breakfast, was nice , though only JUST enough to fill a female appetite. More mushroom and tomatoes would have been welcome. My daughter found a LARGE piece of shell in the poached egg. It was pointed out, the piece of shell was taken away by the waiter but there was no suggestion of a reduction in the bill or a free coffee. The place is beautiful and I will visit again but thought there should have been something done by way of apology for the eggshell.

The food was of a high standard and the service attentive and rapid. My only concern was that the £11 starter of deep fried goats cheese consisted of only one, very small lump of cheese. At that price I would have expected at least two- after all TIY ! [this is Yorkshire]

Lovely location overlooking the river. Great place to sit outside and have a drink. In the restaurant, food was okay, service was average. It just lacked the wow factor you hope for. Drinks a touch pricey.

Have visited the Star at Harome & love it, but extremely disappointed with Star Inn the City. Initial drinks order & starters were fine but glasses weren’t cleared away & there was a 45- 60 minute wait for main courses to arrive. 3 out of the 6 main courses (Sunday roast) were only luke warm & very difficult to eat on the narrow plate. These plates of food had clearly been sitting for some time. The table behind us had the same problem & sent their food back, but we’d waited so long....2 of the main courses (risotto) were hot in parts & 1 of the main courses was hot & delicious.

A lovely evening that had great food, service and ambience. Celebrating our anniversary we were well looked after but the restaurant was equally popular with couples, families and small groups.

Our food was excellent. The waiter confused my order so I ended up with the lamb rather than the duck, but the meal was still extremely tasty.
They have a good selection of gins behind the bar and recommendations for the best tonic to pair them with.
My boyfriend had the beef special and it was outstanding, the mushroom risotto was incredible.
The desserts were gorgeous.
I would definitely recommend for a celebratory lunch or dinner!

Very good ambience. Delicious food. Better arrive on time for the booking though, not too early. I think the two-hour turn-around time starts when the first guest arrives.

I cannot understand how they manage to get poached eggs so over cooked and the portion of mushrooms was abysmal. My colleague’s scrambled eggs were watery and the black pudding over cooked . No wonder there was only 4 other tables in there .

A wonderful Michelin 1 star restaurant. Absolutely beautiful inside with views of the garden and river. The food was spectacular. Staff were excellent and attentive as expected. There is also an outside casual venue on the river. Overall lovely experience.

The Sunday Lunch was poor. The meat was tough, potatoes had been cooked for some time as very hard and the honey baked roasted veg was dry with cabbage way over cooked. We were very close to returning this meal but have never done so before in a restaurant.
We have previously eaten here and have experienced good ambience and food both being something worth returning for. It is the first time we have been back since they re-opened and we were very disappointed and will not recommend.

For the second time since it has re-opened we have had a really poor experience here both with service and food.
Took a long time to order then receive drinks. Ordered onion soup received pea soup as apparently wrong menus on table but only got told once it was brought out as pea soup.
Goats cheese starter very small and poor value for money and fish fingers looked like birds eye ones and were burnt !
No apology from anyone for service poor food.
Such a shame as we are local and dined here a lot pre fire but will now only visit for drinks.

Starter arrived 10 minutes after ordering and was good. A good start you'd have thought. The main course took 50 further minutes to arrive and turned up just as I was about to complain about the service. I and another had ordered the carvery, this arrived warm on a coldish plate.
The meat was pink but dry like it had been left out for ages before being served up. Yes the gravy was good and so were the carrots. The potatoes were warm and tough, like something undercooked then reheated two or three times.
The purple pickled cabbage was about as appropriate ( in my opinion) as fish ice cream with this meal, pathetic really.
I havnt mentioned the glum bored fed up male waiter who served us a couple of times but he just added to the entire experience. ( To be fair the female waitress was sweet and why I left a tip).
Pudding? Well would you be daft enough to wait another what 30 minutes (?) for something from the same kitchen as the main course?
Overall score as follows.
Ambiance (good) 9 out of 10
Starter good 6
Main course 0
Pudding 0
Service 1
Total 16 out of 50

Wouldn't return . Wouldn't recommend.

1. On arrival 3 staff passed us without any eye contact. Finally one person said they were sorry they were too busy to deal with us but someone would come soon and wandered off. 5 minutes later someone wandered by and seated us...
2. The food was fine, but over sold on the menu and basically just the same as you would get in a normal pub but inflated prices.
3. There was a man using the ladies toilets because the signs were pretty confusing unless you spoke viking.
4. Also you had to drop the toilet seat to flush, which meant that when you came to use each toilet the seat was closed. I am sorry but I don't like touching toilet seats in public - UNCLEAN.
5. Nice hand soap and moisturiser which when you pressed it nearly came off the wall attachment it was on.
6. We heard the people on the next table complaining their Yorkshire pud starter didn't contain any of the veg it was supposed to. The waiter said, it depended on which bit of the mix you got. Bad luck. Walked off.
7. My gin was published as having raspberries, why I chose it. I got 1 raspberry in the first drink and none in the following one.
8. We ordered cheese and biscuits to share for pudding. The cheese came. We waited 10 minutes or so for the biscuits. No biscuits. Then we asked our waiter if the biscuits were on their way. He went to the kitchen and came back saying that the biscuits had flagged up possible traces of nuts so they had decided not to serve them to us due to our nut allergy. On one hand very helpful in not killing us, but perhaps we would not have chosen the dessert if someone had let us know in advance... mmmm cheese and cheese with no biscuits and no alternative offered. I mean couldn't they have done some toasted fingers or something????
Most expensive meal in York we had all weekend and the staff looked so unhappy, the customers were unhappy....
View and location fantastic but it lacked in attention to detail. Our experience was very disappointing.

The setting is lovely and the interior very stylish
The choice of food was good and offered a wide variety for a relaxed meal
Service generally good - particularly so from more senior staff
Drinks are quite expensive and my one criticism was that the house white was not chilled enough and when I commented on this a somewhat snooty response was given & a significantly more expensive option was suggested, which was better but still not really cold enough for me, which took the edge off the meal and the whole experience
