Located in the Old Engine House on the edge of York's Museum Gardens in a riverside setting close to the historic Lendal Bridge, The Star Inn The City has an enviable position, which we aim to match with the best produce God's Own Country has to offer and genuine Yorkshire hospitality for the 'whole package'.

We offer an all day menu which can be enjoyed for both lunch and dinner, as well as serving up breakfast Friday to Sunday, and on Sunday's we serve up our famous Sunday roasts between 12-4pm.

We pride ourselves on being a a food-led celebration destination, with guests being able to enjoy view of the River Ouse from our Garden Room or outside on our riverside terrace. For more intimate occasions we also offer two exclusive Private Dining rooms for celebrations such as graduations, weddings and birthdays.

Somewhat average food with some very average service including delivering food that was not ordered. I would regard it as providing a service for a busy tourist city and nothing more. Slightly disappointed.

Fantastic food, fantastic service at the table and lovely wine list. Only minus was the front of house ,the lady who showed us to our table didn’t smile or engage in any conversation making a poor first impression.This was however quickly rectified by our lovely waitress who couldn’t have been nicer and the amazing food.

Great food - bit of a delay in between courses , people sat for 25 mins waiting to get served Waiter didn’t know what wines they served - shame really- won’t be back for a while 😞

Monkfish tail was small and overcooked, served with two tiny stems of broccoli and two large onion rings. Poor quality and poor value for money. Service very slow. Two of us received drinks, but we had to chase the other two after a long wait. We also waited 90 minutes from ordering to arrival of food. Grace, who was not actually our server was the saving Grace and very helpful. We were offered compensated by not being charged for the monkfish and reduced service charge. We won’t be back; all view and no substance.

Extensive and interesting menu with plenty of gluten free options, helpful advice from server regarding options. Good wine list and not over expensive . No delays in being served, food very well presented with sensible portion sizes. All well cooked and flavoursome. The Eton Mess with strawberries and pistachio pieces was the best I've ever eaten. Only one suggestion for improvement, the gluten free bread was the plain white sliced loaf. There are many options for better bread, Scharr brown ciabatta roles, long shelf life, or genius wholemeal buns which can be reheated from frozen in seconds. Overall an excellent experience, we will certainly return on any future visit to York.
