The decor is lovely, the food great and the service unobtrusive and classy.
Whenever I have the opportunity to go to York, I will definitely book a table.
Very enjoyable experience
The food was wonderful
I couldn't believe the taste 10/10
Excellent food and service. Great value for money. Highly recommended
Good food in pleasant surroundings. Good service. Ladies toilet lacking in basics such as toilet paper.
Amazing food, high quality service, really nice location. Will definitely go again when we are back in York
Excellent daytime menu, very good service and nice, riverside location
The service was amazing, we were made to feel like the only customers in that day. The food was outstanding and the waittress couldn't do enough to accommodate my husband's dairy allergy.
Very good food and pleasant ambiance. There was a bit of a mistake with our starter order but the staff were very friendly and helpful
Lovely evening celebrating a birthday. Every aspect of the experience was really good, from the warm, relaxed welcome to the after-dinner drink on the patio overlooking the river. We'll certainly be back soon.
Eat here quite a lot and have never been disappointed. Excellent service and food and nice quiet atmosphere. Would highly recommend.
Enjoyed the set menu and ambience.Dined at 5.30 and experienced the setting in the daylight and the dark.Food well presented and staff attentive
Chose The Star in the City to celebrate my birthday as I’ve eaten there before and enjoyed the cuisine. I have dined at The Star in Harome and really enjoyed the food . We had an extremely pleasant waiter and placed are dinner order. We were surprised to have it placed in front of us withinn 5 minutes. One meal was edible the other was cooked but cold. Obviously the meal had been sitting on the passé for some time. The meal was replaced but sadly the memory of eating cold cooked fish spoiled the new plate of food. We were told that the deserts would be free. They were delicious. The manager did apologise but I felt more could have been done.
I was extremely disappointed by our culinary experience as I had been looking forward to dining at a
restaurant I had been to on our occasions with my late partner .
My first visit but will not be the last. Really good choice comfortable and very very helpful staff.
Location just 4 minutes walk from Railway Station.
Second visit this year and food was exceptional, service was second to none!
The food and setting were beautiful - it's a shame the service let the evening down. The meal felt rushed , and like turnover was ok that mattered. For example we'd had a couple of sips of gin and tonic before the starter arrived, were not offered or given opportunity to order wine before the main course arrived etc when we raised this with the waiting staff she was sniffy and almost blamed us saying we could have asked for the food to slow down and they'd have 'kept it waiting' , that wouldn't have been the answer as you want food as soon as it is reSy not kept on a hot plate. When the bill arrived it had extra drinks on we hadn't ordered.
Lovely food, lovely setting let down by the service
Lovely Restaurant in great central location by the river. Very nice ambience and décor. The food wasn't a wow but equally nothing to complain about. Very limited vegi options if you have any in your party the this is probably not the venue for you.
Lovely food and friendly service as always. My only slight disappointment was that the menu was considerably reduced in size since our last visit so there wasn't enough choice. The menu on your online link was much more comprehensive. Had a lovely night though and will return.
Everything was very good, although I thought the price for a single glass of wine was rather excessive compared to the bottle price. But this is to be expected I suppose. I find the same in most establishments.
My main beef was with the size of the table for two. By the time it has bread, water, bottle of wine, bits and bobs of decoration, condiments, plus cutlery and napkin, there is very little table top space left. maybe I am being over critical, but I don't like to have to watch where I'm putting my arms for fear of knocking something over. I appreciate the need to get bums on seats, but not at the cost of patrons' comfort. Having said all that, the meal was excellent and I would not hesitate to revisit.
I had afternoon tea at the star in the city, it was very nice, served by very friendly and helpful staff, in a lovely clean restaurant.
After initially been very concerned that the menu we were handed was nothing like the one we found online, we were actually delighted with the overall meal, and probably couldn't have chosen better
I had a fillet steak and to be honest for the priced I expected better, I recently visited Miller & Carter in Glasgow and the steak was far superior and cheaper, overall I enjoyed my visit this was the third time I have been
Lovely meal and the chef modified a dish to remove an ingredient we didn’t like.
The setting is lovely but that is the only lovely thing about this place. Sunday eve, we were two guests put on a table for four, no cosy dinner for two atmosphere. the starter summer veg pasta was so hot it burnt my mouth and had obviously been blasted in the microwave to heat it up and so pasta was then like rock ! My husbands fillet steak was as he said a bit like the cheap ones you get abroad, not good ! This place could be so good but at the minute it really isn’t worth a visit at all, we wished we’d just stayed in the Hotel for dinner
We had an excellent breakfast - the food was amazing served be a very friendly waitress - great value for money & a real treat..
The two of us first went to this place soon after it opened about two years ago I think, and we thought we would give it another try. Previously, the service was poor and the food average. This time the service was excellent and the food average to good for the money. We both had a first course and main and shared a dessert.
The French white we chose was excellent and we had two bottles of it. The seafood cocktail was a great starter and was too big for my wife so I had to help her with it. I had two Yorkshire puddings with gravy and coriander, which were fine.
My wife had the stuffed summer vegetable ravioli/pasta with pea sauce which was not the delicate plate she had expected and looked like a dog's dinner. There was simply too much thick pea sauce and too much pasta and she barely touched it. The waiter took it away and it was taken off the bill.
I had the Hartlepool sea bass special for the novelty and it was pretty tiny to say the least, and it was probably slightly overcooked too. It came with a pea grainy thing and some fatty pieces of bacon. I ordered the posh chip to go with it, which were good.
After sharing a lemon sponge pudding the bill came to £102 after that main was taken off. For a place that has enjoyed a high level of marketing that represented quite good value and our waiter really was attentive and understanding. But unfortunately, I don't think we'll be back.
Amazing ambience and even better food! Loved it here and will definitely be returning
we go here quite a lot and every time we get exceptional service and the food is always first rate. Would always recommend The Star to my clients and friends.
Visited for an early evening meal on a recent visit to York. We were shown to our table quickly and efficiently. Our waiter served drinks whilst we chose from the menu. The menu had a good choice of quality food and the prices were in line with the style of the venue. However both myself and my partner felt that more options in terms of side dishes would have improved the overall enjoyment of the meal. We expected some vegetables to be served with the mains just to make the meals more finished off. The starters and desserts were really good so we would return on that basis
We booked a table for 1pm, arrived on time and had to wait 20 minutes to go to our table. We had to wait a further hour to be served food. I had a crispy chicken open sandwich, which was underwhelming. My friends both had steak dishes which they declared excellent. I won’t be in a hurry to return.
The dining experience at the Star inn the city was simply exquisite, the quality of food on offer was lovely. The staff were very polite and attentive at all times and were on hand to make recommendations if you required.
never fails to deliver , exceptional food , wine & beer in classy surroundings
Would not recommend. Very disappointing experience and not worth the money. The crab appetizer was pedestrian at best. Main course of pork tough, sauce acidic and overall tasteless. Server was gracious and efficient but another server mixed up orders brought to table repeatedly.
A lovely place to celebrate our special anniversary. The food was excellent and not overpriced plus a special celebratory desert. Nice atmosphere and great location. Very friendly and attentive waitress. We will definitely be going back.
Very good food; we both had vegetable bhajis, which were delicious to start. The catch of the day and the ravioli were both good. We had an excellent waitress. Our table was by the window and, unfortunately, because it was so sunny we had to have the curtains drawn across. We, therefore, didn’t get our view of the river. Not the fault of the restaurant but annoying, nevertheless. Good value for money. Fairly busy, with a really good atmosphere.
Nice location and staff. Focaccia bread dry and stake . Steak tough. Crab salad has no salad just sprig of herb for £15! Chips ok but reheated . Wouldn’t go again
Very pleasant venue and the Sunday lunch was well cooked. The only difficulty was trying to manage the food on the narrow oblong plate.
Our first time at The Star in The City after making a few visits to The Star in The Harbour in Whitby. Friends of ours recommended this place and it was excellent. I had the Venison and my husband had the Fillet steak. Superb food, wine and great service.
Lovely setting, lovely food, great service. The only negative would be there was not a lot of space between tables, and sat on the outside I was continuously nudged by other customers squeezing between my seat and that of my neighbour. Overall though, strongly recommend a visit
Lovely location. Food very good but not exceptional. Service excellent. Noise level Saturday night almost unbearable. Not the place for a cosy dinner. Good for parties perhaps.
Celebrating my wife's birthday we originally went to the star inn at Harome quite a few years ago so when i was told they had one in York thought it would be perfect and it did not disappoint great food with a twist on the traditional great service frim the very fiendly and attentive staff a fabulous evening.
