Been quite a lot previously but this was by far the best tasting and quality food we've had to date
Lovely meal, nice place, good service. What's not to like1
Excellent meal in lovely surroundings. Service was superb.
Amazing..outstanding. probably the best steak I have ever had.. and I ve eaten a lot in my life.
I would highly recommend this lovely restaurant. This is the second time that me and my partner have been. I booked this time for my special birthday, the staff are friendly and very attentive to all of your needs. The view is stunning across the river.
The food was lovely, well cooked and presented beautifully. We will definitely be back for another visit 😀
We had a really lovely anniversary meal at The star in the city. We arrived earlier than our booking to get out of the snow, we were able to be seated straight away which was perfect. The staff were so friendly, knowledgable and professional. Food was beautiful and so filling, couldn't manage a dessert! Lovely atmosphere and view, we will definitely be visiting again. Thank you!
Server was attentive, food was good however when I mentioned there were many bones in my fish pie there was no apology or acknowledgement- just cleared the table as if I’d never said anything! Apart from that we had a lovely time!
Everything was very good
the food the service the atmosphere
Slightly pricey but a great meal
Fabulous afternoon with a colleague who never had afternoon tea before, it was fabulous and the staff were superb, even on a wet and rainly day!
Staff were cheery but the big disappointment were the Mothers Day Roasts. The vegetables and Yorkshire pudding gave the impression they had been sat waiting to be reheated for us when we arrived at 730. Andrew Pern is a great chef but delivery on this day disappointed
a Michelin star restaurant where we had to send the meat back because it was cold, the food was nothing special or unique or even especially tasty, and could have been served in any pub. A very disappointing, expensive outing.
Another fabulous meal at the Star, the staff are so friendly yet professional, the food was superb!
Visited for Mothers Day brunch & left disappointed, we have visited regularly & found the quality of food very poor in comparison to previous visits. We were served shop bought crumpets & pancakes!! and the pancakes & bacon were served cold. The setting is lovely, but sadly we won't be brunching here again as there are much better quality eating establishments elsewhere in the City.
Nice place for a drink, but won't go again for a meal. We all thought the food was disappointing, for the price. I had the duck starter which was ok, my husband enjoyed a lovely prawn cocktail and our friends ordered the crab starter, my friend thought the crab meat was tinned! We didn't think it was very clear what veg came with each meal and the waitress just said it was as on the menu. Our friends enjoyed the halibut, but the new potatoes were overcooked. I ordered the lamb which was lovely but didn't come with any veg so I ordered chilli broccoli which was lovely, although it was rather a large portion for one, i would have preferred a veg selection. My husband ordered a steak which was average and came with fries (not homemade) and salad which was the smallest portion of leaves I have ever seen. He also ordered a portion of onion rings which was a very large portion of excellent onion rings. The lack of a selection of veg to me spoilt the meal, and I would expect the fries too be homemade from a restaurant which promotes local produce, and given the prices. We enjoyed the cocktails and the good selection of beers.
Everything was perfect. ...The staff, the food, the environment and atmosphere. There is a lovely vibe where children are welcome and grown ups can enjoy a sophisticated meal.
We had a lovely time. It waa a gift from our daughters for Christmas. Couldnt have been better. Service and staff were excellent.
We were very much looking forward to an evening at The Sat Inn the City as we were celebrating our 13th anniversary, having wed at The Star at Harome. The venue is lovely and in a super location, good ambience and great service. The menu sounded great but unfortunately did not live up to expectations and is no where near the standard of The original Star. Starters were fine, not amazing though, we had prawn cocktail and scallops (very pricey for three small scallops £15). The biggest let down was the mains- braised of cheek was tough, gristly, tasteless and almost inedible. The cod was cooked well but only luke warm, the accompanying new potatoes can only be described as watery slush encased in their skins, they had been cooked past all enjoyable form. The problem is that we didn't want to make a fuss on our anniversary and start complaining, the food was not up to standard at all, ingredients poor quality and cooking skills considerably lacking. What a shame, this should have been so good.
Good but not great food for the price. Dry mash and pork overcooked which was 'ok', but not for 25 quid a pop. Service is second to none though. Lovely staff.
I have tried the special rhubarb menu - it was very well presented and tasty - although a few ingredients on the menu were missing or in invisibly small quantity ("little Leg Pasty"). Especially the main dish, including the excellent sauce, would have been even more enjoyable with a decent portion of side dish - I had to order bread with it.
Service was really good - although I have been served by about 4 different people throughout the time so it was difficult to liaise.
excellent food and great service always a great experience
The food could not be faulted but unfortunately the service was not up to the same standard. When we arrived just before 7.30pm for our booking we were left seated for 25minutes and had to ask if we could have someone take our order. We had to help ourselves to menu's whilst left seated. When we got to our table our waiter our waiter appeared totally disinterested. Whilst pouring our wine he splashed wine all over the table. We were seated next to one of the coat stands, my partner had taken her Rhubarb Gin to our table and as the waited was trying to find a coat on the coat stand and knocked the glass of gin over! No apology or offer to replace the drink!
Scrummy food with Yorkshire provenance and style
Great food and service. Definitely recommend! Never been before but will most definitely be going again if we return to York. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Lovely evening and great food for my Husbands birthday.
As soon as we walked in through the door we immediately knew we had made the right choice for lunch. The atmosphere was great - vibrant and bustling :) We were welcomed by friendly staff (smiling and courteous) and asked if we had a reservation. Although slightly early our table was available and we were given the choice of a drink at the bar first (which we decided to do - rude not too LOL) but did not feel pressured either way - very relaxed.
When we went thru to the dining area to eat - the views were magnificent! Looking out over the river and the adjacent Museum Gardens - I challenge anyone to find a better view from a York Restaurant.
The food itself was amazing - great choice of seasonal & local food !! And it didn't disappoint when it arrived on your plate either!
Would I highly recommend - Certainly would! Will I return? - Most definitely and VERY SOON!
Thoroughly enjoyed :) A+++++++
Delicious food, little pricey but great service!
Lovely location. Fabulous service and gorgeous food. Very good value and excellent Yorkshire portion sizes! thank you :)
A very enjoyable and tasty meal, White Crab Cocktail followed by the Cod.
An excellent restaurant for a special occasion, the staff really made our anniversary special. The food and wine was wonderful.
I booked a lunchtime table for four to celebrate my husbands 70th birthday. We were greeted and seated with the minimum of fuss and studied the menu. The service was very attentive but unobtrusive. We ordered wine and then food. Our starters were excellent, imaginative and delicious. Our friends enjoyed their mains (lamb rump for one and ox cheek the other). My husband and I ordered the catch of the day - cod steak with lobster. The lobster was delicious, as were the new potatoes and samphire which accompanied the dish, however, the cod was, in our opinion, over cooked. Having said this, all in all our lunch at the Star Inn the City was a lovely experience, and we would certainly visit again.
A very picturesque environment to drink and dine with quality food and drink available. Our waiters were really attentive and helpful without being over bearing, this is the third or fourth time we've eaten at this venue and we will be going back again.
It was a great experience and especially the ‘Posh Prawn Cocktail’ which was a prawn salad in a cocktail glass was impressive. Mom says it was the salad with most real prawns she has ever had. The steak was also well cooked, forgot to order the peppercorns sauce but found them taste great with just salt.
Tips: don’t eat too much bread otherwise u might find it difficult to eat all the other fascinating food.
We were a party of six including a one year old celebrating an 84th Birthday. We received a warm welcome & were shown to our table where as requested high chair had been provided. We all had Sunday lunch..., four of us having pork & one beef plus a Yorkshire pudding from the children’s menu for the youngest of our party, followed by desserts. All thoroughly enjoyed the food & our dining experience at the star in the city. Will certainly return.
Would absolutely eat here again, great food and service
Beautiful restaurant, nice ambiance with great views across the river. Food was excellent quality & service very efficient without being too intrusive. Great cocktails also! Perfect for a special occasion.
Went for a birthday celebration and it was perfect
Beautiful restaurant and outstandingly delicious food. This was a romantic occasion and it appeared a little bit that we were crammed in. There was a table nearby with children who, although quite well-behaved, were a distraction and my own opinion is that families should be welcome however, should be allocated a family dining area so as not to disturb those seeking a quiet, romantic lunch. Would definitely go again but probably late at night to avoid any child issues * 😀
Excellent food and excellent service. Highly recommended.
The service was good we had 2 small children with us and they where well liked after . The food was good but a bit cooler than I like .The menus are written in very small print and is hard the read in the lighting suggest you increase the size of the font or keep a few copies for request
