Our first time at The Star in The City after making a few visits to The Star in The Harbour in Whitby. Friends of ours recommended this place and it was excellent. I had the Venison and my husband had the Fillet steak. Superb food, wine and great service.
Lovely setting, lovely food, great service. The only negative would be there was not a lot of space between tables, and sat on the outside I was continuously nudged by other customers squeezing between my seat and that of my neighbour. Overall though, strongly recommend a visit
Lovely location. Food very good but not exceptional. Service excellent. Noise level Saturday night almost unbearable. Not the place for a cosy dinner. Good for parties perhaps.
Celebrating my wife's birthday we originally went to the star inn at Harome quite a few years ago so when i was told they had one in York thought it would be perfect and it did not disappoint great food with a twist on the traditional great service frim the very fiendly and attentive staff a fabulous evening.
The restaurant was fun and lively. Lots of atmosphere and good service
A really nice meal for our birthday weekend. We saw this restaurant pop up many times so felt we had to go. We were both very impressed with both our meals, food, drinks and service. Would definitely this restaurant to anyone.
Service poor. The menus were dirty - ugh. The prawn cocktail was piled high in a cocktail glass, and presented with no underplate and a fork, impossible to eat without all over the table mess, and tasteless, not enough spice. A diner with us ordered icecream, also presented in the same way, another mess, nowhere to put down the spoon. The fish (seabass) was a very small portion of fish sliced, dry and overcooked, no sauce. One guest said,’fish fingers’! Tables too close together, one guest constantly jogged by the waiter, and I was hit on the head by an elbow of one, who didnt even seem to notice!
OK for lunch.".......................".............................................................."
Would definitely recommend. Lovely ambience, great food and very good service. Daughter’s birthday and she received a complimentary tasteful dessert... no singing, thank goodness!
Exceptional food and service, very pleaaaant interiors with views of the park
We spent a long weekend in York and prebooked a table . On arrival at 17:45 we were taken to our table and placed next to another 2 occupied tables, even though the rest of the restaurant was empty. It was a glorious evening so we asked if we could sit outside. After checking the waiter returned saying chef had decided not to serve food outside that evening! We asked to move to another seat as table are very close to one another. The experience was not going to improve as we viewed the menu. There was no more than 2 non meat choices. OK perhaps we should have checked beforehand, however these days there is a basic expectation that restaurants cater for vegeterian/vegan diets. We decided to leave and wont be returning
A lovely meal in great surroundings, good menu choice and great presentation. Waiter gave good recommendations and service was excellent
Friendly welcome and excellent, accommodating service throughout.
Food quality was outstanding, fresh local ingredients.
A lovely ambience, all in all a thoroughly enjoyable meal.
Third visit and still not been disappointed; excellent choice of beers and wines, good food and service. Some of the dishes are over-priced for what you get (crab starter in particular @ £15) so careful choices need to be made. We will be back as the menu does change with the seasons and availability.
Disappointed with my meal. I had same dish on June and this one bore no resemblance to it. Didn’t enjoy special starter either. To be fair waiter picked up on my disappointment and didn’t charge us for my main and a glass of wine. I would have preferred to have a meal I had enjoyed. If menu is not going to change the standard needs to be consistent.
Great venue, food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. Thank you!
I eat here whenever I visit York, and have never been disappointed - good food, friendly and helpful staff, pleasant location; to me it reflects the Best of Yorkshire
Excellent menu, service , location and value. Ane exceptionally pleased dining experience
We had a really memorable meal with excellent service. Thank you to the waiter and kitchen staff for our experience
Having already experienced, and very much enjoyed, the Star Inn at Harome and the Star Inn the Harbour in Whitby, and as I was in York, I felt I had to try the Star Inn the City. I was not disappointed. Great choice using local produce and very good value for money. The location is fabulous being located in Museum Gardens in an old engine house.
Fourth visit, outstanding food as always. Quick, polite and professional service. Outstanding British food with an original twist. More than happy to cater to allergies. We were sat in the garden room, with views over the River Ouse.
Superb restaurant; excellent service and food. Gluten free options were brilliant and staff extremely accommodating. Would definitely recommend.
Fantastic setting with great ambiance. High class feel but not stiff and starchy. I visited with friends but it would be a great place for a romantic meal for 2. The quality of the food was fantastic. Not the most extensive of menus but there are at least some vegetarian and vegan choices as well as options for those who prefer meat or fish. It is a bit pricey so certainly for me, a place for special occasions rather than a regular place to eat out.
We are frequent diners at The Star Inn the City and also at The Star at Harome. We enjoy the atmosphere and the variety of the menu which features local produce and specialises in food which is in season. The dishes carefully bring out the best in the ingredients and they are cleverly matched to ensure a tasty meal results!
Amazing food & great service ! Had an amazing time.
A marvelous meal in a lovely setting with excellent service: it all makes for a splendid evening and for lovely memories.
Lovely food very good service relaxed atmosphere, I would certainly recommend it.
Our wedding anniversary was made special. Thank you.
I had only head good things about this restaurant and i can only confirm that the hype is well deserved. Food was excellent and reasonably priced. Service impeccable and discreet.
Very welcoming. Our server Ryan was excellent: informative, obliging and good-humoured. Good selection of food, well cooked and presented. Good wine list too.
The Star in the City is a great venue for special occasion dining as the setting is impressive and the service excellent . The food was great quality with an inventive menu but perhaps tries a bit too hard with some of the flavours being rather overpowering for me. Sometimes good food simply cooked can give the best results. As I said the service was excellent, all the servers we experienced were polite and friendly, our main waitress was very knowledgable about the menu and her advice helped us make our choices. My recent visit was a celebration lunch, at £25 a head for 1 shared starter between the 4 of us, 4 mains & only 1 of us drinking alcohol (the others on soft drinks or water) it is a bit pricey for more frequent visits. I would happily eat there more often as I am a York resident but I’m put off by the high price & I’m not sure I consider it to really be value for money.
Disappointing and over rated. Location is nice and service is good but for what you pay you ca get better food elsewhere.
Lunch was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, both of us avoiding the undoubted temptation of having a 'posh' carvery lunch - I had grouse which was delicious and my dining companion had one your chicken dishes which again was most agreeable.
Really enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. Food and wine were first class and service was attentive but not overpowering. Will certainly go again when next in York.
Not what we expected. We assumed that it would be adults only at that time of evening but what with crying children and hen nights it was more like an upmarket Beefeater. The food was good, although over priced for the amount served and they really need to work out how to cater for someone who is gluten intolerant. With a bit of effort things could have been a lot different. Won't be going back.
The Star in The City is a trendy, atmospheric venue for both drinks by the river or wanting some delicious food. I took my partner for her birthday and the overall experience was great with some differing food options that you normally find.
One slight criticism for a venue that prides itself on style and service, is the fact that my medium/well steak came medium/rare and on informing them, they just simply said sorry, the man over there got yours and you got his, let me change it. By the time it had come back, my partner had finished her meal so it didn't get cold whilst waiting, so our birthday meal together didn't quite go to plan as we due this error we actually had to eat separately which was a shame and didn't exactly fit with the venues pride on service, as it is quite pricey.
As I said, overall, its a lovely place and location, food was great once arrived correctly and would recommend.
Great quality in a gorgeous venue, but a little overpriced for the portion size.
This was our first visit on the occasion of my partner's birthday. Each of the three courses we had was delicious, particularly the duck. Slightly disappointed with the raspberry and ginger trifle as it was not as gingery as I'd hoped and spoiled by the inclusion of jelly, which I don't like much.
Our table was at the end nearest the windows, so we had a lovely view of Museum Gardens. Sevice was impeccable. Although it is more expensive than other local restaurants, the quality of the food is definitely superior to most and the ambience is perfect for a special occasion.
Absolute perfect night with my wife. The food, service and class touch to everything at StarInTheCity makes coming back time and time again a very easy choice.
Keep up the great work TeamStar
we were seated at 2 tables of slightly different heights - just enough to tip a glass of water over the table - staff were quick to mop up the mess and replace the tablecloth. main course had new potatoes one of which still had the deep cut, with brown edges, from being dug up. Unable to eat it, I pointed it out to the staff - who apologised and said that he would tell chef. NO apology from the kitchen was forthcoming. The dessert of sticky toffee pudding, whilst looking good was lacking in flavour very disappointing. This was a very average meal.
