We had a lovely evening at The Star. Sat outside for a drink first then had lovely food and wine.
The only thing I would do differently would be to ask for my sauce to be on the side instead of a beer the fish as it was a bit sweet for me so could not eat it all
food was good, but we were not advised that the dish came without sides or vegetables. this made the meal rather rich and not enjoyable. if we had been advised by the staff that we would probably want to order some side dishes then we would have done. both courses also took a long time to arrive so had we realised and then ordered sides after, we would have been waiting even longer and our food would have needed reheating. The restaurant was really cold also.
its a shame, because what we had was good but for the price it was not a great dining experience.
Lovely food and fantastic location.
Loved it.... Great location, ambience and especially the food and service... The South African Chenin blanc was great too!
I love The Star in the City and the food is typically excellent. We visited on Sunday for Father's Day. I was left a little underwhelmed in all honesty by the whole experience.
The service was very lack lustre. It was quieter than I had anticipated and I asked if we could have a window seat. I could see approx. 5 free on the right hand side. We were advised we could not as one of the tables was made up for 5 people (it was actually made up for 4 people as they had to set another dining space when a family of 5 arrived!!) There were still 4 free. A family of 4 who came in 45 mins after us were seated at one of the "free" tables.
The waiter service which I would say from experience has been previously excellent was very mediocre. No smiles, no offer of drinks (we had to ask if we could order drinks) and generally I can only sum up by saying I was very "underwhelmed" and left with the thought that I will try other places instead of always opting for The Star as my "go to" place.
Absolutely no acknowledgement to Father's day which again I was not impressed by.
Food was very good though very sparse on the rectangular plates. A table next to us had round plates which contained significantly more Sunday lunch!! I ordered dessert which is not something I ever do as typically I am full on one course.
I also never left a tip as a reflection of the experience.
Shame about the experience and likely to just be a blip, but sadly not what I had hoped for for my husband and son on Father's day.
Excellent dinner for four. Wide choice on each menu course and glass walls provide attractive setting. Friendly staff and lively atmosphere.
Perfect experience definitely will be back, fantastic food and great service
First visit for a while. Saturday lunchtime - with Races on in the City - so busy. Pre booked table immediately available. Service attentive. Food praised by others in the party. Still in the top 3 in York.
We went for a late breakfast to celebrate our daughter finishing her exams. Good atmosphere. Fast service. Staff polite and helpful but a little artificial. Lovely table with a good view. Food nice but not exceptional. No toast with the full English breakfast. Would recommend for an occasional outing but too expensive for what it was. Good vegetarian options though.
Had breakfast...limited choice, only smoked bacon, Why, ...found it very overpriced £65 plus tip for three for breakfast....mmmm. Maybe ok for foreign tourists.
We enjoyed a lovely evening of fabulous food and wine along with great service from your staff. thank you.
Read Jay Rayner’s review, but booked anyway! To be fair the gimmicks were kept to a minimum and the place is good and honest.
If you enjoy straight forward good food cooked and served very well then this is an excellent place to add to your list of places to go.
Would have liked to dine alfresco by the river but weather did not allow. Will definitely try again in better weather.
Overall very enjoyable at twice the price.
Outstanding on every element. From walking in, to being seated with a view, to excellent service, excellent food, and fair prices. One of the best restaurants I've visited and I've been lucky enough to visit restaurants around the world that are famous/run by famous chefs/good. Excellent. Nothing could have been improved upon. My friend who was dining with me is the wife of an ex chef, and she also thought it was excellent.
Came here for a week day lunch. Food very good, although on the more expensive side. Service friendly and efficient. My only criticism is that there are few lighter options as we were eating our main meal in the evening and had called in for lunch. However we still managed to share a starter, have a main of sea bass and then share the excellent chocolate pot dessert so far better than a boring sandwich. There was plenty of atmosphere even though it wasn't busy, but thought that if there had been more light lunch options they might get more of the tourists in to eat there.
The staff are very welcoming, friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant itself was in ovely setting and surrounds whilst the menu and food was excellent.
Beautiful setting alongside the river. Interior was very stylish, kept clean between rush hour and our booking which was late Sunday afternoon. The food was flawless and excellent quality. The service was great. We didn't have to ask twice, everything came in a timely fashion and the waiters attention to our experience was clearly a matter of priority. Very good wine selection.
The perfect environment for a special lunch or dinner, as well as a casual smart occasion.
Sometimes you just want to find somewhere a little lovelier. The Star Inn The City was just what we had hoped for.
The food was really tasty and couldn't fault the staff, extremely helpful and friendly.
The second time I’ve visited the star inn the city within a month. The food is outstanding and the service is great too.
The pork belly and scallops were amazing.
Pleasant staff serving good food enormous amount of people equally enjoying themselves on the terrace .
Lovely pleasant ambience, service impeccable and staff really polite.
Food excellent and spotlessly clean. Will book again.
Had a lovely lunch here and was the perfect place for a family reunion. Food and service were very good.
Absolutely worth a visit! Definitely make a point of booking as it’s very popular.
Excellent service and environment .
Very irritating menu design !
Wine good but overpriced
2006 musar (excellent Lebanese wine) £77 should be around £40
Good gastro pub food with fine dining vibe and price tag .
Still a good experience .
Great service, fantastic food - as always!
I visited with my family and we were celebrating my Husbands birthday. I had asked for a table with a view on my online booking form and we had a lovely table looking out across the drinks terrace towards the river. The ambience in the star is very relaxed and friendly and our waiter was lovely. It's all about the food at the Star and it was incredible. We didn't order dessert as we were so full BUT our waiter brought out a beautiful chocolate mouse on a slate with Happy Birthday piped on in white chocolate for my Husband which was a really lovely touch as they has only picked up that knowledge from my online booking. It's those little touches that make a place special. Well done Star. We will be back.
Went for lunch for a friends birthday. The setting was beautiful, the restaurant has lovely views across the water and the surrounding park. There's a great outdoor space overlooking the river for sunny days. The service was friendly, professional and well informed - one of our party was gluten free, the waitress was knowledgeable about the suitability of the menu and very helpful. She was a real credit to the place! The food was delicious, we had a main course and pudding each - nothing could be faulted, seasonal, fresh and well worth the price. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend it to anyone and im looking forward to my next visit. If there is a negative i didn't see any parking for disabled customer's which means I can't take my dad there, that's a shame because he'd love it.
The food was quite outstanding, the wine on a par but cocktails average. The service was reasonable but not memorable. The location and outlook was sublime. An evening to be recommended.
A fantastic experience! Wonderful food with a good menu selection and funky cocktails, and brilliant staff that were very attentive but not pushy. Nothing was too much and the little birthday plaque was a beautiful extra touch that made it all perfect.
You have to remember this is a pub really. it is easy to forget because the environment is really very good so you feel like you are in a Mitch restaurant. So the food is pub food but top notch for that. However.... the nose to tail terrine was good but no more. The roast (it was Sunday) beef was OK, but the accompanying roast potatoes were not good - hard inside and not crispy on outside. Veg were really just a load of carrots (and few spears of asparagus). Pud was alright (dark choc pot - but very milky for dark choc). And it is not pub prices. But the setting is really lovely. And the beer is excellent (wines not so good - avoid the Pinot Noir).
Food and service superb. Vodka martini good but very very small. Bar man’s knowledge of gin selection could have been better. Minor points though. Overall a lovely place to dine or have a drink or coffee.
Second meal I've had here. Previously went with family (four people total) . They all enjoyed the food, though I didn't, but the service and atmosphere were great, so thought I would give it another try.
Meal for two with girlfriend on a Friday night. Self-important and uninterested bar staff. Too cool for school waiter. Neither seemed to understand their job was to provide the customer with an enjoyable dining experience, not just deliver goods to the table. The front-of-house seemed to lack any senior staff that might demonstrate to the predominantly young crew how to achieve good service.
The food was substandard. Over salted pork terrine with bitter coleslaw and shop bought crumpets to start. Well cooked pork for main, but ruined with overpowering piccalilli slathered all over it.
Wine was good, we enjoyed a bottle of Pernshire pinot noir, which I would recommend.
Overall, disappointed with the experience and unlikely to go again.
A wonderful setting for a special occasion along the river bank. You are made to feel welcome and then allowed to relax and without being rushed. The food is well presented, generous portions, tastes outstanding with a service to match.
Exceptional food, set in a lovely building looking on to the river. While the food was exceptional, the service you would expect wasn’t quite up to the standard you would hope for. We waited a long time from sitting to ordering, eating to clearing, drinks orders etc. The staff were very polite & well presented - but not as attentive as we would’ve hoped for, in such a lovely gem of a place, with the Star name.
Disappointed that a small fork could not be supplied in order to eat the prawn cocktail which was served in a beautiful glass but totally impractical to eat from - the teaspoon that our waiter presented was not helpful. Our waiter was not able to answer some of our basic questions such as what seasonal green vegetables were on the menu and managed to spill our wine when pouring it. He was very nice but seemed inexperienced. The restaurant is lovely and the food too but when you are paying the prices you charge you expect perfect service. I don't feel compelled to return unfortunately.
My family and I went to a birthday meal out. In short, some tables in this restaurant have stunning views of Museum Gardens, most do not; the food is locally sourced and high quality with a good range of options available; the meals we had ranged from 'nice enough' to lovely but given the high prices, I expected better. Some of the purees were bland and the duck was insufficiently succulent in my opinion. We had a pleasant time, but none of us feel as though we would rush to return as we feel there are simply better restaurants in York at a more reasonable price.
As usual the food and ambiance were superb. We always enjoy everything about our visits to The Star!
Perfect; attentive staff, gorgeous food and a great atmosphere. Will definitely be coming again.
Excellent food and service nice atmosphere and the staff were very accommadting. Its not cheap but I think the price is reflective of the food, we had a lovely meal.
Better service than previous visits, drinks order very slow. Acceptable meal, nothing special, lacking atmosphere.
Nice food on the whole , however , a little on the tepid side. Staff were friendly , lovely setting , good wine and beer.
