The outside area of The Sterling is always buzzing and the restaurant always popular.
Very pleasant , nice food and a great place to have lunch overall. Only issue was getting the waiter to bring the bill at the end which took ages. Also slow to ask about deserts and coffee.
After being seated for over 20 minutes we had to go inside to ask someone to come and take our drink and food order (something that isn't new for the Sterling - you know it's going to be busy on a sunny Thursday/ Friday so why do you always seem understaffed??). I would go as far to say that the staff actively dodged people. Drinks took ages - would have been quicker to go inside to the packed bar! I had the salmon nicoise salad which was nice but for £15.50 i would expect slightly more than a piece of salmon, 3 baby new potatoes, half a boiled egg, a few green beans and cherry tomatoes. The main selling point of the Sterling was that you could eat outside in the sun so previously you could forgive the below par service and average food but with the Scalpel now fully erected, virtually all sun is gone by 1:15. Obviously this is not their fault but makes what was previously tolerable not seem worth it.
If you make a large group booking call and confirm as there seems to be a problem with the restaurant receiving opentable reservations!
Having said that they managed to accommodate my party of 15 very swiftly.
The foods is very good value for money and I was very happy with the service.
We were upstairs so the noise level was better than had we have been downstairs.
Great quick business lunch with overseas colleague. Nice restaurant, enough choice on the menu, speedy service. Perfect.
Another good business lunch at the sterling. Friendly service and good food.
I go to the sterling quite often for business meals as well as to meet friends, at lunch or evening. The sterling has friendly staff and good options for food and drink. It would be good to offer daily specials as well as the usual menu, as some of the items do not change.
Nice restaurant located inside The Gherkin. Good place to go to for lunch with colleagues.
Lovely terrace and nice business lunch menu.
Booked lunch for 16 and when arrived the team did not have our booking. Very disappointing and then had to traipse 16 people around the city to find an alternative venue.
Very enjoyable as always - fabulous service - just a shame about the Doombar draft bitter !! Every single time I have been there - the Doombar draft is not working !!! Why advertise it if it never can be served !!!
Great service. Really nice food. Desert menu was limited with just three options but lots of choice for the main course.
We had an enjoyable lunch here. Staff were friendly and the food was good. Our friend (who had come over from NYC) said it was the best Caesar Salad he had ever had. So I think we will be trying that next time too! A great place to meet for lunch.
I didn't know this place existed whilst looking for somewhere to go at very short notice for 10 people. So pleased they were able to accommodate our group. Lovely food, wine list & service. We will be back!
The Burgers we lovely, thank you.
Went for lunch in the sunshine, we sat outside, buzzing atmosphere, service was a bit slow but it was pretty much full so that was to be expected, had a lovely bottle of Pinot and the food was outstanding.
Didn't adequately explain that the evening was just a very limited tapas menu. Great place, but not to eat on an evening.
Food is OK here, but essentially it's a bar that serves food. If it wasn't for the fact that it's one of the best places in the City to dine al fresco, I probably wouldn't eat here. It's OK, but so are lots of other places in the City. Still - when the sun is shining it makes up for a lot!
The staff were attentive and the food was good. We were sat in a nice booth and were well looked after. The food was good - the menu isn't huge but there was something for everyone and overall it was a good dining experience. The food came quickly too which is handy if you are on your lunch break.
Location is supberb. Food was ok for the price but menu isn't hugely enticing. Not too pricey
We had a get together on a Monday night and luckily the bar/restaurant was very quiet and they could accommodate us. We have had a few changes in this booking, and I liaised with the office and then directly with the bar, but my requests did not seem to have come through to the staff. It was a nice evening though, even though the food order did not work out exactly as planned.
Fantastic location in the City.
Service was quick and efficient and the food exactly what you'd expect from a good pub
Considering the location I doubt you'll find better at this price point
Group of 5 who all work in the Gherkin went for lunch last Friday.
This was our first time there since the recent refurbishment.
The thing we noticed more than anything else (including refurbishment) was the limited menu.
There was a lack of choice in comparison to similar type restaurants in the immediate area.
Surprised by the menu and thoroughly enjoyed my food. I don't like the range of beer on tap however.
Great venue, food ok but service was a bit lack lustre
Once again, an enjoyable meal at The Sterling - good service, decent choice and delicious food, all at reasonable prices. And it is nice to be in daylight rather than being buried in a basement like so many other City restaurants.
Perfect for our event, quite a big booking, food good and enjoyed downstairs bar.
This is my second recent trip to The Sterling having stopped going there because the good was over priced and the service very slow but they have made hugh improvements - the food is much better value for money (crayfish flat bread) and good service.
food was ok, the setting here is fabulous. not over excited by the food menu here
Varied menu at a reasonable price with good service. Ideal for quick basic business lunch. Great location.
Only issue was that the table we were allocated was very 'sticky' , which was unpleasant! We were offered an alternative table and assured the table was very clean and the stickiness was caused by the table being old,. Suggest they buy a new table!
Food is always good here, nice atmosphere, service sometimes slow but overall a good place for a business lunch or lunch with friends.
portion sizes could be bigger. I had Smoked Haddock, which was very nice, but it was a very small piece of Haddock.
Service was very good, attentative and friendly waiting staff.
I've eaten twice here, each time for outdoor dining in the city. Location wise it's great, the service is friendly enough if a little inefficient, but the food could be way better. I'm surprised that for one of the top landmarks in the city (and London), there isn't a decent eatery. There's a real opportunity here to do something special and/or different. Lovely lunch in the sunshine, but the chicken in the chicken caeser salad was obviously straight from a supermarket pack, very stingy on the dressing so very dry, very overpriced. It came quickly though, which figures, because it could have been prepared in seconds. This in contrast to the last visit, where there was so much oil on my salad that the lettuce was swimming!
went on a very sunny day, the service etc was great considering how busy it was but the food was only ok, mine was fine but my guests wasn't and we had ordered the same dish....
With a large outdoor area it's a good place to go on a sunny day. Considering the number of diners, the service was very good, and the food was of a decent standard. Nothing to get too excited, but it didn't diappoint. A good wine list as well.
OK - nothing amazing. Not quite a gastro pub yet.
Once seated outside we had to wait 25minutes before anyone approached to take our drinks & food order, it was relatively empty as the lunch time rush had not yet started and there was 7 waiter's/waitress's standing around chatting. We were then told we had the wrong menu, when we were ready to order after looking at the correct menu the waitress informed us of a number of meals they had 'run out of' so back to the menu we went for the third time!
Food was fine, but despite not being very busy, the service was fairly hopeless. And (my own fault for not checking the bill) but it's very irritating when restaurants automatically add a service charge then still hand the card payment machine to you with the "leave a gratuity" option open - I tipped twice for poor service!
Well, little to say other than I booked breakfast for 7:30am and when I arrived the restaurant was closed. So I went elsewhere...
Two colleagues and I had a business lunch recently and we were all very impressed with this new venue at th base of the
Guerkin. The service was prompt and efficient, the food was sunstancial and good and overall a very enjoyable Lunch.
It was extremely good value for London and I am happy to recommend the Sterling Restaurant. R.K.
great place for business lunch -. service great and food good value, nice atmosphere as well. I would recommend it.
