Having been to this restaurant on 3 or 4 times in the past we were not surprised to see that the excellent standards of food and service that we had experienced in the past were still in operation, even on at 7:00 pm on a Thursday evening.
I'm afraid 2 of our party did not have a good experience food-wise in that they found the food lacked any flavour. More liberal seasoning required. We therefore found the food overpriced. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and the service excellent, but the main attraction must always be the food.
Lovely french restaurant serving immaculately presented dishes. Somewhere to go for a special celebration meal. Not cheap, but not overly expensive either. A memorable evening. Would definitely go back if in the area again.
It is always a delight to eat at the Sundial and it never disappoints. The ambience is lovely, the service friendly and professional. The menu choices are amazing and the food and presentation is stunning. Many thanks for another delightful lunch experience
If you are a serious foodie with a generous budget, the sundial is a place not to be missed. It is a family run restaurant which is passionate about delivering high standards. I was being treated by a friend for a special occasion (they will make an extra fuss of someone for an occasion if you tell them on booking, but I didn't want to have the attention). They are a very serious foodie and were seriously impressed. Everything was delicious. Expect to linger, from having drinks in the bar while you peruse the extensive choices, to taking your time over the meal. But this is not an evening to be rushed. Take a serious appetite as the portions are generous for fine cuisine and much of the food is rich - but that is not a critique. Take a serious appetite anyway as it would be a shame to waste the opportunity of enjoying every mouthful
Been there a few times now and never disappointed. Food exceptional and drinks good value too.
Lovely meal as always for our daughters 40th birthday. Thank you all so much, Julia and Danny
Every time I eat here the food and service is memorable. This was the first time with children and they were equally well catered for with a flexible menu and a trip with head chef to the kitchen. I just wish we lived closer and could eat here more often.
We enjoy every time we go have booked for Easter Sunday.
Once again the Sundial at Herstmonceux produced superb food with first class service for our valentines celebration. I would strongly recommend the Sundial for any special event
I and my friends have visited this restaurant for many years and it is extremely highly viewed by us - however I was disappointed this time as it was major celebration for me and I visited with 3 friends - we were the only people in the restaurant for lunch and whilst my friends all thoroughly enjoyed their lunch I had ordered a rare steak for main course which arrived on the well done side of medium rare. I did not wish to spoil celebrations by complaining and having to wait whilst done again. I believe I ate only 2 mouthfuls if that, which was perfectly obvious when my plate was collected but was entirely ignored. I consider it should have been deducted from the bill without me having to ask or for any fuss to me made but it wasn't. I appreciate in a busy restaurant things can go wrong but there were only us 4 in for lunch. Very disappointed.
Never let us down always thoroughly pleasurable experience
As a party of four we agreed that the restaurant did not live up to the reviews. There was a lovely start to the evening, pleasant seating in a lounge and bar, quiet conversation, good service as we sat with our aperitifs, the wine list suggest "If you are unsure we will be happy to help you with your selection". We were unsure so we asked to be told "You are your own experts", not the anticipated response. While we all agreed that our starters, plate cleansers & deserts were excellent, we were all a little disappointed with our respective main courses. This took away some pleasure of the evening and none of us would be enthusiastic to return at the price we paid.
Simply the best restaurant in East Sussex. Outstanding food wine and service always
Fantastic evening with friends. Service was great, food was outstanding. Great value with amuses bouches and a fabulous pre dessert. Restaurant was fairly quiet but as it’s just before new year that’s understandable. A lovely old restaurant like you don’t often find any more.
A wonderful evening. Ease to park, well lit approach to entrance. Decorated very tastefully, spotlessly clean. Greeted with canapés and the chance to choose our meal in comfortable sitting area. So well presented with surprises appearing between courses by way of cleansing the palate. Such polite and attentive service throughout our meal with discretion on when to top up glasses with very tasteful wines but glasses never empty. Could not fault this restaurant having been several times now with different friends and family and never let down once. Look forward to our next visit.
Our experience began with a very friendly welcome from the owner and continued in the same vain with amazing service, excellent food and a great choice of wines. It was also a lovely surprise to be offered a small appetiser with our pre-lunch drinks and then a plate of delicious petits fours with coffee at the end. The reception lounge was very cosy and the dining room very tastefully decorated with good spaces between tables allowing us to have a good conversation without being bombarded with background noise.
This was french cuisine at its best and a great place for a special family celebration or just a lovely relaxing meal for two. I highly recommend you try it !
The sundial never ceases to impress. A fantastic dining experience as always. This place is definitely somewhere to go for a special occasion. The food and attention to detail is absolutely brilliant.
We've visited a few times now, and the quality has always been excellent - this time being no exception.
In January last year, I took a friend who, as a playwright, has been taken out to some of the top restaurants in the world (he was dined by the Afghan ambassador to the UK later in the summer). He told me at the end of the year that this was probably the best meal he had all year.
Service always good, the welcome always warm - couldn't ask for anything better.
Loved it! The only reason I put noise level up a bit is because the next table was a group Christmas party. I would be happy to eat here again for any occasion. Great pre-drinks, food and wine, and superb service. Thanks, Sundial!
Lovely welcome. Superb food served beautifully. Service is very good and unobtrusive. You have to be prepared to wait between courses, especially on a busy evening. The flavours and presentation are superb.
I came to the Sundial for lunch with my parents to sample the food as we have booked for Christmas day. We were all so impressed with the fantastic food, excellent personal service and all the little extras that came with the meal such as h'ordervres, amuse bouche and petit fours (with coffee) which made a lunch consisting of a main course, dessert and coffee feel like a five course meal!
The service was impeccable, the food delicious authentic french cuisine, at quite frankly, astonishing value. We cannot wait for Christmas dinner now, highly recommend.
The sundial will not disappoint wonderful food beautifully served.
As ever a warm welcome from Mary (owner and front of house). Attentive service without being intrusive, excellent food. The first time our friends had been to The Sundial and they haven't stopped talking about the delicious food and what a wonderful evening they had. We'll all be returning and continue to recommend The Sundial to other people.
We were 4 for dinner on a Saturday evening and our first visit. A very pleasantly styled estaurant with an excellent menu range and wine list. The atmosphere is friendly offering all the services you would expect from a higher rated establishment. All elements of the dining experience , from aperitifs to coffee, were of a very high standard and each course was a delight. The service was attentive without being a nuisance. Our only adverse experience was the interval between each course which we found excessive even taking into account the evident attention paid to each dish. Would recommend.
Very good food. Some difficulty with wheelchair access. Friendly. Outstanding service. Variety of menus. Good wine list. French cuisine pleasant ambience and quiet. We always go when in the area.
Could not wish for better. Excellent in every way
Lovely meal and excellent service.
French cuisine with an occasional twist which makes us keep going back!
Certainly one of if not the the best restaurant in East Sussex.
When we arrived we were corralled into the bar area and offered aperitifs which we declined as we had had a drink at the pub down the road beforehand. We asked about our table twice before I had to stand up to ask, only to be told that “people normally have an aperitif before going to their table”! Aarrrgggh!! This episode took 30 minutes and we had made a late 8.15pm booking. Unfortunately my behaviour appeared to get the waitress offside and she was professional without being polite for the remainder of the evening. The food was passable but the lamb was well over cooked. Duck breast was very nice however the prawn entree had frozen school prawns in it. Ended up expensive with mandatory 10% service charge added.
Vincent is a genius. Mary knows how to make it special.
This restaurant is better than any Michelin star restaurant I've eaten at.
We are so lucky to have it .
The main highlight was the quality of the meat for the 2 main courses, venison & lamb. We were greeted ans seated in comfortable longe area to select the food & drink and supplied with appetisers. Amuse Bouche & 2 between course palate cleansers were supplied.
Outstanding dining, food excellent and the service and ambience are fantastic, always a pleasure to visit this little gem
This is an exceptional restaurant and were it in London, the menus would easily be three times the price. Service is charming and accommodating.
Fantastic food at very good prices, great bar area for pre-dinner drink. Attentive and friendly service. Will definitely go back
Lovely welcome by the owner... Great food.. great service, and a lovely ambiance.. Would definitely recommend and will be returning.
Second time we’ve been to the Sundial. This is a fantastic fine dining experience. There’s some seriously impressive skills going on in the kitchen, and front of house is attentive & professional too. Food was delicious on both occasions, and wine list is awesome with some great French reds on there. Will return every time we are in the area!
The food was top class, being a Michelin star chef myself. The service also was very attentive. Will go back for sure
Just visited Sundial for about the 10th time since moving locally 9 months ago. I cannot reccomend this restaurant enough. It is basically a family run restaurant with Vincent running the kitchen and his wife Mary running the restaurant together with their daughter helping serve. The food is spectacular and if they were in the west end I have no doubt they could charge double. We nearly always have the tasting menu and have never been disappointed. Give it a go you will not be disappointed and will definitely go back
Just lovely for a special occasion, simply unique. I recommend this restaurant for every reason.
